AHS Class Action Lawsuit Settlement
AHS (American Home Shield) is one of the popular and the biggest among all home warranty companies. AHS provides home warranty protection services nationwide. Some of the homeowners warranty plans are criticized for lack for customer service. The problem is complicated and is partly attributed to small print contract terms that customers are not aware of until they file the claim.
AHS recently announced a class action lawsuit settlement for breech of contract. The litigation is about not making repairs and replacement per the contract. AHS is admitting no wrong doing and it denies the claims and says it is agreeing to the settlement to avoid costly legal proceedings.
You can file a claim if you purchased your home warranty between July 24, 2001 and December 31, 2008 provided you were denied service during the above period. The claims settlement website has all details here – www.edlesonclassaction.com
UPDATE: One of our readers posted another similar settlement which can be found at faughtclassaction.com

I am writing because I feel AHS has defaulted the contract. I have yet to receive the cash payment AHS agreed to pay in lieu of a service for a HVAC system that was replaced in NOV 2008. Furthermore, I repeatedly requested they not send the same repair service company they have a contract with because the company servece personnel are not certified or trained to work on most of my appliances. Even after I made this request in writing, AHS continued to send them out. Now it’s trying to get the service fee from me. I have many complaints about this home warranty/insurance company. I do not recommend anyone to use them. As a retired US Army Senior member, I will be writing comments on all Army Bulletins and any other form of ccommunication I find to communicate the levels of breech of contract. Anyting to keep service members from wasting their money on this bogus company.
I had the core plus warranty in which included the cieling fans. I had a fan in the master bedroom go out and contacted AHS. They sent out a couple of young men to evaluate the situation. While they were there i advised them both that the contract states that they will replace it with a comparable system. One of them acknowladged that statement and told me they would have their office contact me the next day. This was on March 26th, my contract expires on March 28th,. when the office contacted me they advised me that they were bringing out a replacement fan. When they arrived they had the cheapist fan you could buy at wall mart. I ask them if this one was compairable to mine and i was told it was the only one avaliable. Because my warranty was to expire the next day i was afarid that if i didnt accept it, i may never get it replaced. When they tried to install the fan, it didnt work. The switch was bad. Instead of taking it back they took the switch out of my old unit and put it in the new one. They did ask if i wanted the old fan and i told them no. BUT, when they left the took everything. The new box with all the paper work still in it. The warranty card, MFG information sheet and everything else. I did not know this until the following morning. I (foolishly) assumed they left the paper work somewhere in the bedroom. They also did not leave me with any type of paper work. Now work order, comment sheet, i have never heard of any company doing work at someones home and not getting some type of paperwork signed by the owner. I called this company (not sure if i can mention their name) to see if they could bring back the paper work and i was told that they had already disposed of it. I told them that without the paper work from the new unit, and the swithc that came out of it. My MFG warranty would be nil and void. They didnt care. She told me that i could go to the place where they dumped it and look for it myself. I contacted AHS and they just said “Sorry” no attempt to make it right, no attempt to satisfiy the customer, There is more to this story but its long enough now.
Starting in June, two months after we bought our house we had trouble with our AC. The drain was clogged and flooded the ajoining room and hallway. Contacted AHS, contracted company came out and fixed the problem, $55. Pre winter mantinence was scheduled in Oct, 2008, $69.99 plus water heater maintenance $29.99. To our gut wrenching surprise our heater would not work and the contractor claimed that it would take $6k to install a new unit, new duct work and intake site, none of which would be covered by homesheild due to neglect. We just bought this house, we had it inspected…how is this due to our negelect? So, we went out and purchased space heaters and piles of logs and toughed it out all winter. Spring rolls around, pre summer maintenance, $127.23. He gives our unit a once over and after asking him for his opinion on the heater he walked over to our thermostat and checks it. Our thermostat was not installed correctly by the previous owners, which wasn’t caught before, so now I have to pay on top of his $55 service call $80 +/- for him to program it. This service is not covered by the warranty even though the house was inspected and everything passed. But, since I was so irrate he discounted me 10%. But before he leaves he trys to convince me to renew with AHS because my AC is 10yr’s old and by his opinion I should expect $1k worth of work on it in the near future or full replacement $6k. But he also told me that full replacement would be a long shot since AHS would repair until parts were no longer avaliable or unless their is nothing left to attach parts too. So, basically over my dead body. But it is tempting to renew when they throw such big numbers at you. I wasn’t aware that they had such a bad reputation. It seemed that most of my problems were with the service men themselves not with AHS although I haven’t yet had to file a claim with them. And at the end of it, I was the one who was left feeling like an idiot but also taken advantage of. I was so nieve to just hand over my check, and some of those times it was really hard to come up with the money to pay those service fees.
When I first purcashed my house, I bought q brand new side refrigerator with the ice maker. The ice maker stop working. I called for a repair and was told they to do cover that part of the appliance. My ice make is still broken today.
I have called on numerous plumbing, leaking facuets. I get charged $55.oo for each service charge. They come out and changed the washer and a month later it is leaking again. I don’t know why they don’t just change the stem and correct the problem.
I wrote the letter below to AHS in MARCH 2008.
I eventually had to get the air condition fix myself. It was the fan motor that need repairing. I had it replaced and have had air every since. But in the mean time, I had my entire breaking box replace with more power and that was not even the problem. That were more money I had to spend.
I have been trying to get my air conditioner repaired located at 3016 Dumbeath Road, Memphis, TN 38128, since October 2007. AHS originally sent out an air conditioning company to service the air conditioner and make the necessary repairs. The Air Conditioning Company reported to AHS that I had an electrical problem. I paid the Air Conditioning Company $55.00 for the service call in October. After finding this out problem, I called AHS to find out what was the progress and what I needed to do.
AHS then sent out an electric company serviceman from Central Electric. The electrician said that my electric breaker for the air conditioner was 30 amps and it needed to be 40 amps and I needed this repaired. Central Electric charged me $55.00 for this service. I felt sure I had left money to cover this charge with my father to pay them. He is old and I did not have a receipt for proof. I later received a bill from Electric Central and AHS for $55.00 in which I have paid.
After learning about the electric problem and not ever having a problem with my electric breakers amps in the past, I called Raleigh Electric Company to come and check out my electricity problem. On October 23, 2007, Jim Whaley, an electrician, at Raleigh Electric Company checked out my breakers in question and stated I already had a 40 amp breaker connected for the air conditioner. He said he didn’t know what the other company was talking about. He then checked the other breakers amps for the other appliances and they were fine also. He then went and check the air conditioner after I told him what the air conditioning serviceman and the electrician that your company had sent out had told me. Mr. Whaley, found that the fan motor on the air conditioner was not working. He said the air conditioner was getting power and the compressor was kicking in like it should. Mr. Whaley said AHS could called him if they had and questions about the breakers amps or air condition problem. Raleigh Electric charged me $73.50 for their services. Now, I am out of $183.50 plus time off work and still have an air conditioner that has not been repaired.
I have tried to contact Tina in Customer Relations at AHS at 1-866-343-5674, extension 2012 on several occasions. I have left messages after messages, called the main line and they stated they would e-mail her my concerns of trying to return her call where she left me two messages on my home phone.
I have called on my washer and dryer which were also purchased new when I bought the house (5 years old. Guess what I could have bought another new washer and dryer for the amount of money I have paid out. The dryer is not working now, AHS will not fix it or purchase me a another one. The are always going to find out and escape path or some reason to deny the claim in order to replace it. The repairman said I had three thing wrong with it and felt AHS was not going to repair it and he was right. I did not renew this year. I havw been with them at least 5 years. That over $3,000 plus $55.00 for each time they have been out. I could have bought me a new washer, dryer and refrigerator.
I had a problem with my microwave oven, the face panel to the controls was falling off, thus posing an electrical hazard! I called AHS, they sent someone to take a look at the problem. I later received a letter from AHA stating that it was a cosmetic deficiency that that it was not covered. WOW, $55 dollars to tell me that a broken microwave with a falling panel is purely cosmetic! I canceled my plan soon after, with the premium paid and service call I could have purchased a new one. AHS IS A RIP OFF!!!
I had a gas range installed that AHS ordered to replace my broken one. After it was installed I was told I would have to pay for the new gas connector. I read the manual on the new range and called the manufacterer which states, anytime installing a new range the connector must be replaced, it is a safety issue and standard, ecpected part of the installation. AHS is claiming that it is a “Modification” and I have to pay for it. I do not see how a required and expected step of a normal installation is a modification. I read the contract and no where does it state that the expected gas connector is a modification. I seem to have to fight for every nickel and dime with this coverage! So I am looking into a “Class Action Suit” as who knows how much has been wrongfully charged to the customers over the years at $40.00 + a pop.
In October 2007, we requested AHS coverage for our built-in bathtub because AHS contract on page 6 outlined under D. Covered Systems and Appliances that it was covered. However, AHS did not cover the repair work of $238.00. We submitted a letter requesting a review of the matter along with the invoice and a copy of the contract, but to no avail AHS did not reimburse the $238 and we also had to pay the service fee of $55 to AHS. The plumbing company who did the repair did not understand why AHS would not comply with the contract and cover the repair!
We are hopeful that the Class Action Suit underway will turn in favor of the customers and settlement will demand that AHS payouts be made to all those who were not reimbursed for repairs under contract.
several years ago our mortgage company talked us into purchasing ahs home warranty. shortly afterwards i called ahs for warranty work four times and never sent anyone.they are crooks.
about april 2009 I decided to try ahs home warranty after a bad experience with first american home buyers protection. june 13 2009 I called in for repair my second floor central air stopped working (same unit that was replace by first american home warranty) well didnt get a call back from anyone untill 2 days later, I understood it was the weekend but when you live in Texas 2 days without air is torture, finally get someone out to look at the unit 7pm Monday night he tells me the unit outside broke because it was not a proper match for the condencer in the attic and most likely the ahs wont cover it but he will submit it. 7pm the next day ahs finally calls to tell me they will not fix it sorry. I said well why dont you put in a unit that is compadable they said no even after the lady on the phone when i bought the warrant said upgrades are covered. just like all other warranty companies ahs is a rip off, they didnt care and just want to take your money
On June 11, 2009 at around 9:00 p.m. we discovered there was a hole in our holding tank for our well. We called AHS to report the leaking tank and were told that it was not covered. I do not even sure that they understand what a well system is. A few day later we discovered that the central air conditioning unit in our home stopped working. We called an air conditioning service to come and look at the air conditioner and discovered that there was a hole in the side of the unit and exposed copper coils, rust on the corner of the unit and it was disconnected because it was not safe. All this at our own expense. When we discovered the problem we called AHS and they sent out a service man and he said it was a piece of junk and needed to be replaced. He call AHS and gave them a report. The next thing we new we had another air conditioning service man calling to say they were called by AHS and wanted to set up an appointment to come look at the air conditioning unit. AHS wanted a second opinion. He came out and gave his assessment. It was not safe to hook up, it was a piece of junk and he would not do it and it needed to be replaced. Called AHS and gave him his report. We got a call from AHS telling us that our problem was not covered under the warranty plan. Mainly, because none of the technicans said that the problem was due to normal wear and tear. The unit is at least 20 years old. I would like to know what they consider to be normal wear and tear. I would not recommend this company to warranty a dog house. They seem to pick and choose who they want to help. We bought this warranty in good faith thinking that things we needed to be covered were covered. I believe they ripped us off and thinking about putting an article in the local paper so no one else has to go through what we have had to go through.
I am so glad that I am not the only one having problems with AHS. I have only been in my home for 71/2 weeks. The A/C started blowing hot air and I called AHS. They sent someone out and it broke again 4 house later. They sent someone else out and he repaired what the first contractor broke. Now it is broken again and I am told that I am to blame because I authorized an improper repair???
I don’t have money to buy an new A/C and I am not sure why I have to keep paying service fees.
How is this my fault? These guys are a rip off! I was cursed out by 2 customer service reps and told that any appliances that were previously repaired prior to my purchasing the home are void due to previous work?
This is not good….
We have been without AC for 10 days now. We live SE of Houston, Texas and it is more than HOT! WE called on a Sat. and was told to call on Mon. (So much for the 24 hour service). We called AHS Mon. and was told the contract company would call us and set up a time to send a serviceman out. Mon. the local service company called and said a repairman would be sent on Tues. Tues the repairman comes out and says the problem is a loose wire. The AC still did not work. The next day we call the local company and they send out a different repairman. He said the motor was working at half capacity. He replaced it and said it would take 2-3 hours to cool the house. The next morning it was 85 degrees at 6 AM and rising. We called the same local company again and the third repairman said the compressor needed to be replaced. He called AHS that Wed. AHS said the part was on back order and would arrive Mon. or Tues (5-6 days). On Mon., today, I called the local company to see if the part had arrived. No, it had not. I then called AHS to inquire about the status of the part. After speaking with 2 people I was told the part was not ordered. But they assured me that the part would be shipped out today and would arrive tomorrow. Whether we can get it installed tomorrow or Wed. it will be 11-12 days without air in 98-104 degree heat. We bought a small portable AC unit that has helped but at a cost of $325. We’ve made several calls to AHS and the home office in hopes of correcting this problem. I am still waiting.
Do not buy AHS warranty. Their advertising is misleading you to think that you will be covered, when in fact when something does break down they often find a way to deny the repairs.
There are thousands and thousands complaints about them on the web. I signed a conract with them 2 months ago and now I regret about it. Do not repeat my mistake.
When my Air Conditioning unit started leaking and flooding my neighbour downstairs I called AHS to request service. An AC contractor came the next day, inspected my AC and identified the problem – leaking collector pan. He charged me my 60$ deductable and told me to wait for AHS authorization. I asked him how much these repairs would cost me if I had to pay myself, he said $500 – $800. At that moment I was so glad I had AHS. How naive I was…
Few days after AHS called me and told me that they did authorize the repairs, but since that collector pan was no longer manufactured, they would have to install a different one, and in order for it to fit they would have to do some “modifications”, for which I would have to pay $725.
I tried to explain them that I did not request any modifications, and even if they are required to repair a leaking AC they should not be my problem and responsibility. I bought a warranty, then my AC which is covered under that warranty started to leak, why do I have to worry about how they should fix the leak? If for some reason they cannot repair my AC then they have to replace it. That’s why it is called “warranty”! Why are they asking me to pay $725, what kind of “peace of mind” is that”?
Now I see that AHS is a rip off. Some people warned me, I should have listened.
I have so many issues, it’s difficult to choose only one. I will simply list here the major ones.
In 2005, in August, the AC went out. We had a 5 ton unit, they replaced it while we were not at home. Only it was replaced with a 3 ton unit. AHS states the repair company told them it was a 3 ton they hauled away. The repair company has conveniently “misplaced” the record of service. Now, because the outside turbine is the wrong size, we have issues with the unit on a constant basis. All one has to do is look at the original foot print where the old unit sat, to see the one we have now is MUCH smaller.
The plumbing in our house started acting up. The repairmen came out to “fix the problem”. After several lame “repairs” the problem still persisits. AHS told us it was a blockage outside of the home and not covered. The problem is UNDER the house and therefore under the contract IS covered. They deny it.
Our undermount microwave started over heating, and the lights and the turntable stopped working. Instead of replacing the unit, they decided to try and repair the existing one. It no longer over heats, but the lights still do not function. Also, after adding up what the cost of repairs were, and doing some looky loo shopping, the replacement would have been almost $160.00 cheaper!!
Also, when our water heater went out, the unit was replaced, but they charged me more then $200.00 to get the area “up to code”. How did that become my problem?? If it is not up to code, then they should be responsible for fixing it.
Lastly, I had to make SEVERAL phone calls to AHS in order to tell them to not send repairmen from a certain company here where I live. This company has a terrible reputation for laziness and shoddy work. Don’t they do ANY research on the companies they contract??
I live in Phoenix, AZ and it is Hell here during July and August, but am happy to say and believe that with the service AHS gives its customer, the CEO and staff of AHS will be going to hell themselves.
I actually had an AC repairman tell me, after his third visit in one month, the following: “You need a new AC. I will put in a request because your contract states if we can’t fix it, they will replace”. Now this happened after I had AHS for about three years. What did AHS say/do….well they contacted the repairman and told him, “fix it”. He came out and said, “I’m sorry, but you and I are going to see alot of each other, because AHS says the unit be “fixed”, and it can…for about a month, and then I will see you again”. AHS is a rip-off. I wonder if if Mr. AHS himself has a problem with his AC. I truly hope they get theirs. Outcome: cancelled my contract, told them to keep their two $35.00 vouchers they wanted to give me to stay with them, and my whole family sweats alot during the summer….
AHS warranty is the biggest scam going in the same category as Madoff!! Totally bogus warranty. My AC stopped working so they sent “excaliber” service (aptly named for a scam) who did not even open the unit but told me the condensor had a hole in it & that they would get a new one within a day to replace it. To my surprise the next day i got a call from AHS denying coverage claiming my filter was dirty. I took photos of the filter to show them that it is replaced every month, i have a carton of them in the basement for this. Oh okay they said, we’ll get a second opinion, up shows another rip off artist who wants to know what the first guy said.. which i of course did not disclose. He huffed and puffed that his testing equipment had not worked for the past few days then being at a loss to diagnose pointed to a pipe at the bottom of the AC saying oh this is damaged no wonder it doesn’t work. Okay fix it, oh no can’t be done as this is improper maintainance. Well the AC unit sits outside, is covered up each winter, is near a wall so no one can even walk near it to damage it. I have had several calls to ask to speak to the CEO whom they say may only be reached via mail and A P.O.BOX address nontheless. Upon insistence i am told to have my lawyer contact them. Yup 90degreees out and i am going to wait till winter to get this resolved. No way, if i don’t hear back by tomorrow i am going to CNN to expose this scam!!!
I have had the same problem as everyone else..AHS are crooks..we won’t get anything, no monies for repairs, no satisfaction, no money from any lawsuit, the only thing from AHS we got, is being screwed by this company..and it appears that no one cares except the people who lost the money. Our goal should be to talk to everyone who is buying a home and tell them to NOT accept the AHS warranty, because they will be ripped of..we need to spread the word. CNN would be a great resource to get the word on on this rip off company. The people they have contracted with for the so called repairs, are stupid and only come out to bleed us dry and to lie to us. The real contractors state it like it is and say to stay away from AHS..I want a real lawsuit. I had the same problem that Maria had and I live in Tucson…and Khursheed..my coil was dirty and ruined my furnace and A/C…and I had only bought the place alittle over a year prior and had a home inspection…my complaint is no different than anyone elses. Does anyone know what is going on with the lawsuit that was filed a few months ago?? my email address is waskets5@yahoo.com if anyone knows anything….
DO NOT USE AHS – complete waste of money. Here is an account of the events leading to denial of our AHS claim for replacement of our heat pump system. Our home warranty policy with AHS became effective 8/13/2007, following settlement on our home 8/10/2007. Prior to settlement, our home inspection was completed by a certified home inspector. In our inspection report we were told that while older, the heat pump system was in working order. When the weather began to get cold at the end of October, we discovered our heat was not working. The temperature in our home did not increase when the system was on. On Monday, October 29 we contacted a service repair technician to inspect our system and diagnose the problem. We were told we needed to replace the entire system. The contractor quoted us $4,875 to replace the system with a 3 (three) ton Trane heat pump (13 SEER) and handler (including new piping/lines and digital thermostat). Next we contacted AHS when we learned that this problem might be covered under the home warranty policy. We requested a service call and were told it would be completed by their contractor; however, they were not able to come to our home until Friday Nov. 2. The technician came out and also told us the system needed to be replaced. The technician said the claim likely would not be covered by AHS. After filing his report with AHS, the technician handed over the phone for us to speak with and AHS representative. AHS said it would not be covered and our only recourse was to contact both our realtor and home inspector for assistance. We were subsequently contacted by phone by the contractor’s office, who quoted it would cost $6,153.65 to replace the system with a 4 (four) ton Rheem heat pump (13 SEER) and handler. The breakdown of charges was $5,656.52 parts & labor, $497.13 for piping/lines. We paid the contractor $55 for the service call as required. After speaking with both our realtor and inspector, we were given 3 additional names of contractors to contact for quotes on replacing the system. We contacted one of those, who came out that same night (Friday Nov. 2) to inspect our system. He also indicated we needed to replace the system, and quoted us $4,800 for a 3 (three) ton American Standard heat pump and variable speed air handler. This was the best system at the best price of the three that we had been quoted, so we decided to go ahead and have him replace the system at our cost (since AHS had indicated it would not be covered). He told us he would come out on Tuesday November 6 to install the new system, and he did just that. In the meantime, on Monday evening we again contacted AHS to discuss the claim, since we now had 3 separate contractors telling us we needed to replace the system. We could not understand why this would not be covered by our warranty. We spoke with 4 representatives at the 800 number. First, we were told the claim would not be covered because the system “had not been properly maintained” and needed a “cleaning” which was not covered by the warranty. We asked to speak with someone to dispute this, and were transferred to another department. The person we spoke with was very unfriendly and argumentative, and we indicated that if AHS was not willing to reconsider the claim, we would have to cancel the contract. He informed us we would be transferred to the Customer Retention Department, however we were transferred back to the main menu. After explaining the entire situation to yet another representative, who then transferred us to Customer Retention, we requested to speak with a supervisor or someone who had the authority to cancel the contract. We spoke with “Belinda” who agreed to cancel the contract and refund our $55 service call fee based on our dissatisfaction and frustration with the entire process.
On Tuesday November 6, 2007 we contacted our realtor to inform her of the situation, and she was very upset and indicated she would call AHS since “they have always had a good standing with their office.” After speaking with the AHS District Supervisor on several occasions and having had her speak directly with the contractor who installed our system, we finally received a message from the Distrct Supervisor’s assistant indicating some money for reimbursement would be taken from their “marketing budget.” When we returned her call she told us a check for $1,200 was being issued to us and should arrive in 2 weeks. It did, but still did not cover the full amount ($4,800) of our replacement. We will NEVER use AHS and don’t recommend anyone else does either!!!
After purchasing my home I incurred certain breakdowns in my appliances. Microwave, I couldn’t get a straight answer from the company, all they wanted was the $90.00 service call fee. My microwave went out and I didn’t want to pay them the service fee and they weren’t going to buy me a new one. so I chose to replace it on my own. My alarm system I called them out, paid the $90.00 fee and to my dismay I was told they couldn’t fix it I had to call the company that installed the system; which resulted in a loss to me. They did put refrigerator door seals in which was another $90.00. I would advise anyone that’s considering AHS Home Warranty Contract to think again; even though I inherited it with my home. I am still waiting for the Edleson class action lawsuit because I wants to be made whole.
The class action lawsuit was thrown out by the judge, He did not agree with the settlement terms and the case seems to be in “Forever limbo” now.
I bought this house and it is about 19 years old. It passed inspection, however I knew the A/c and Water heater were orginals and needed work. First the Water heater went out and I paid $60 co-pay to AHS plumber then another $183 for “Not covered” parts. So with the contract price of $300 for the year I could have just bought a water heater at Home Depot for $200.
Next the a/c stopped working. I am in Florida and it was 90 in the house at night. FOR 11 days. It took them 11 days to fix the a/c. The a/c guy said ” NO way” I would fix this if you called me, the a/c needs replacing but AHS would only authorize a part be replaced. He gives it another 6 months before he is out to fix it again.
Do not get the extra add on for the washer and dryer. For what you pay for the contract and the co-pay and non covered parts, you can buy a new washer or dryer
Please file BBB complaints. People think this does no good but it helps alot. The Federal goverment looks at these and if there is businesses with abnormal activity, the feds take action. I had to file with BBB to get satisfaction from AHS, they then said it was a mis-understanding. HA
We purchased our AHS warranty about 8 months ago. This summer we had problems getting our Sump Pump replaced, and air conditioner repaired. But the real disappointment has been more recently. Last Friday we had our Furnace cleaned (to make sure we were compliant with our Home Warranty)$60. The rep told me that the Heat Exchanger was rusted and leaking carbon monoxide. He said we should report it to our Home Warranty Co. In doing so, they sent a HVAC rep from another Co. out, who said the same thing, shut off gas to the furnace and charged me another $60. A few days later (with no heat) they called and told us that the Furnace was covered, and was on order. However there would be $700 worth of Non-covered expeses that we would have to agree to prior to installation. Non-covered because they are modifications due to size differences in our existing unit and the one they wanted to put in. (New furnaces are smaller than older ones.) Sounded rediculous and expensive, so I started getting quotes and asked about the Cash Out option. 2 days later, with quotes from $2400-$3500 from local HVAC companies ready, I got a call from AHS about the Cash option. They said they were going to write me a check for $541 to cover the replacement of my Gas Furnace. Something just dosen’t add up. When I declined the Cash option and asked if the furnace was on order they said No, it was put on hold when I inquired about the Cash option. Now I see why Service companies don’t like AHS either. They are making no money off of the furnace, and are trying to get the profits from me. Meanwhile here we are (a week later) sleeping in Mummy bags and trying to sort it out.
The AHS advertisement should look like this:
-Avg cost to replace a Furnace $2400 -Avg cost to repair a Furnace $600 -Your cost with AHS $60 …..(But really all we will pay toward your new furnace is $541, you’ll have to cover the rest!!!!)
We’ve been an AMERICAN HOME SHIELD customer for 17 years (seller paid for the first year of contract when we bought our home in DECEMBER, 1992). We have two A/C-heat pump units (both are 25+ years old) and both have required service throughout the years. AHS has previously responded to service calls and through their agents, provided satisfactory service, including replacing a compressor, UNTIL NOW. WE HAVE FAITHFULLY PAID OUR PREMIUMS FOR 16+ YEARS as we knew that eventually our A/C units would crap out/die/cease to operate.
FAST FORWARD to October, 2009. One unit (the one that cools the living areas – bedrooms, kitchen, etc.) presented a minor leak – which popped our hallway floor. The secondary unit began leaking due to a rusted-out drip-pan. And the pool pump died, too. All in one week – Bad karma? Laundry room flooded, yada, yada, yada.
According to the first technician, the units are so old that parts are not available. Can’t replace the drip pan – can’t find one. The units are so rusted out they’re afraid to work on them because the units will fall apart. Coils will collapse. He called for “authorization” to replace the units and was told by AHS to replace a termostat.
ANOTHER FAST FORWARD – TWO WEEKS LATER. Our calls to AHS for “status” – and the subsequent run-around result in a Senior technician from the same contractor coming out. He agrees with and supports the first technician’s diagnosis. BUT, and according to AHS – “We’re waiting on the contractor to call us with an authorization request”. “We’re waiting on the pictures taken by the contractor”. When asked what the scope of work was, all we got was another run-around. We’ve called the contractor, who is evidently as frustrated as we are.
Here we are, having paid our premiums faithfully for the last 16+ years… When we add up what we’ve paid over the last 16+ years – we could have paid cash for two units….. We expected American Home Shield to STEP UP TO THE PLATE – MAN UP – DO THE RIGHT THING. After all, we’ve paid for it, right? So who wouldn’t expect to receive service? We’ve paid for a HOME WARRANTY CONTRACT. They’re dancing around the whole issue and refusing authorization to replace (OR REPAIR) the units – so guess what???? GAME ON, BABY. WE’RE NOT GIVING UP.
First off my son had heart surgery at six weeks old and he required more operations later. We moved into rhis condo to be close to his Dr. When had problems with our hvac and we had few cool air when greenway left(the local repair crew they use) i had less cool air the next day and the day after that I had no cool air at all.and add to that I have no heat now!!!!I have been here two years with no heat or a.c.!!!! My kid won a dream from one of those wish grantind org. but they don,t give people hvac units because the family would benifit because it would add value to our condo. THANKS HOMESHIELD
We’ve used AHS for over 8 years. Now I understand the way they work: 1. On small problems, they pay technicians $60.00 (the deductible). 2. If parts are needed or there is a dispute, they will side with the technicians because they expect them to make up for the low pay. 3. When possible, try to deny responsibility. 4. When a big issue arises, send technicians that will cover their cost by charging for bogus compliance-related work, which -you guessed- are not covered.
AHS understands how to rip off people. It’s closer to a legal scam operation that a true company. STAY AWAY from AHS!
I would recommend that anyone who has bought this contract cancel as soon as possible. This organization is a scam with no central structure and they outsource to small less than desirable repair companies in your local area. The BBB is your best source for resolution but do not continue to do business and get out as soon as you can. It will only get worse over time. You are better off getting warrantoies from the original manufacturer an dpossibly bundling them if you have multiple assets.
We were sold a Home Warranty when we bought our house in January 2009. The escrow company chose American Home Shield. The Home Warranty Contract Number is 19965414. On April 30, 2009 the kitchen sink backed up. I called American Home Shield for service. They sent out Air Pro Master (Plumbing License #64853). The “technician” said there was no clean-out (there was) so he tried to snake the drain from underneath the sink, he broke the pipe then left after collecting $60.00 for a service fee. I called American Home Shield to get the pipe repaired. They sent out Union Plumbing (License #43524-A) who came out and cosmetically repaired the pipe on May 1, 2009.
On May 2, 2009 I noticed water seeping from the exterior wall where the pipe was located. I called American Home Shield. They said they were waiting for an estimate from Union Plumbing. On May 7, 2009 Jeremiah from American Home Shield called me and said they would fix the pipe but I would have to pay $470.00 to have a clean-out installed. I explained that there was a clean-out there and offered to send a picture of the existing clean-out, they said they did not want to see the picture and could only go by what the technician from Union Plumbing said. I said fine, I need my drain fixed so I would pay for it. American Home Shield said someone would be in contact with me to set up an appointment to complete the repair.
Ideal Services (License Numbers 66194, 52151A, 68097) called and said American Home Shield had assigned the job to them and someone would be at my house by 6:00 PM on Friday May 8, 2009. They never showed up. I called American Home Shield on the evening of Friday May 8, 2009, they said someone would be out on Monday May 11, 2009. The plumber from Ideal Services finally showed up on Monday May 11, 2009. He said there was no clean-out, I showed him the clean-out. He said it was not up to code and it would cost $400.00 to install a new one. I said fine, I just need to use my kitchen. The plumber returned on Tuesday May 12, 2009. He proceeded to knock a hole in my exterior wall and completely broke off the pipe and existing clean-out. He said he would return on Thursday May 14,2009 to finish the job. In the meantime I called the City of Las Vegas Development Services Center to inquire about the Plumbing Code. The inspector told me that the only requirement is that the clean-out be accessible without opening a wall, which it was.
On Wednesday May 13, 2009 I received a call from Matthew of American Home Shield who stated that they were going to send me a check for $1,365.00 and that I would have to find my own plumber, and that was all they would do.
I called Ideal Services on Wednesday May 13, 2009 to confirm the appointment for Thursday May 14, 2009, they said I was “good to go” and they would be at my house to complete the repair on Thursday May 14, 2009. By 10:30 AM no one had showed up. I called Ideal Services who said since I had taken the cash out from American Home Shield the job would cost at least $1,200.00 and they did not want to complete the work and suggested I call another plumber.
I contracted with A-Better Plumbing Company LLC (License# 65597) to complete the repair on May 15, 2009, the pipe was replaced 3 hours later.
Just as a matter of information, for just the past 36 months AHS has had the following BBB complaints if this tells you anything
BBB processed a total of 2929 complaints about American Home Shield in the last 36 months, our standard reporting period. Of the total of 2929 complaints closed in 36 months, 998 were closed in the last year.
My delimma with AHS was a furnace problem. Purchased the home, had it inspected, and when problem arose, was told by AHS that I did not maintain the furnace properly. This was the first time I sttempted to use the furnace.
Had to sell the house because I was ill and could no longer work. Had to take a loss on the sale because, among other things, the furnace was broken.
Since then I was dignosed with cancer so I have no idea what is going on with the suit. If there are any changes, or any forms that I should fill out, please let me know.
Like all of you, we had endless problems with AHS. Their company policy is to always find an excuse to not do repairs or replacements. But we stuck to our guns and forced them to live up to their contract. I suggest everyone stop suffering so much and take them to small-claims court. That will make a big change in their operations fast!
I tried the link to the lawsuit but it did not open, Same as all the others we had to pay fees to find out they wouldnt cover an item.
If anyone has info on the lawsuit please contact me through lowel35@yahoo.com. I am very upset with ahs. We had a problem previously that was fixed and now surprisingly not covered. Imagine that. I am cancelling my policy with them.
Any time I heara about AHS, I wonder why the attorney general have no investigated this company for the way they do business. They are a rip-off company that do not want to pay. My experience with them was with my A/C Unit. They refused to pay claiming that the original installer never installed it right. This is a thirteen year old house. I cancelled my policy. I am glad there is a law suit on them finally from God sent helper of the poor who cannot fight the cheating giant.
Edelson website is not working. does any one has right website address. I am also a victim of AHS. I lost almost 1 year subscription.
thank you, Sreedhar
Settlement information is at faughtclassaction.com
Edleson and Faught is two different settlements, Edleson is still not working.
I was ripped off by American Home Shield. I was so angry I wrote a letter saying I would bad mouth them to any and everyone I met who was buying a home. My furnace went out in zero degree weather in the mniddle of the night in January – an emergency situation and the number I called from them I got no response. I called a local heating company to repair the furnace so my interior water pipes wouldn’t freeze. AMERICAN HOME SHIELD WOULDN’T REIMBURSE ME! The company is licensed to steal.
I am so sick and tired of these crooks. If I ran my business like they do, Im sure I would be strung up by my customers. Im taking this one all of the way to the supremee court if need be. If your car got into an accident, your insurance or the other cars insurance company has to pay for damages. That is what insurance is for. This home wrranty is the same deal…to cover unexpected problems. I am spreading the word about AHS. I see an ad right now in the daily news here in Florida and Im going to raise h*ll. See ya in court AHS!
I have been an AHS customer for over 10 years and have not had any problems with them. I refer to the contract before calling them and they have always honored their contract. I recommend them to all of my friends and I have four house all with American Home Shield
http://www.faughtclassaction.com is the site to get included with the class action lawsuit againts AHS. Im fixing to take them to small claims court myself, I have had the heating guy come out 4 times already in less than 2 weeks. He knows that unit is old and needs replacing, but from what I read, AHS wont budge until you slap them with a lawsuit. Cant msnbc or foxnews do a story on this company robbing people! Had I seen this site before when I bought my home I would have never purchased the warranty.
Today I finally had enough of AHS and them trying to get my dishwasher fixed. In July 2009 my dishwasher started leaking and and the motor kept running when not in use. I called Ahs they had their contractor call to schedule a 3 hour time frame to come and look at it. The man comes totally unprepaired to remove the dishwasher. Thank god I had asked my son in law to be there, he had to help lift it out clean up the floor and carry it out to the guys van. After 4 weeks I call ahs to see if they heard anything yeah it’ll be scheduled to be back next week. Hey, it worked for a whole month before it started leaking again. Called ahs they send the same company out again, still not prepared to remove the dishwasher. This time my husband had to miss work and play the clean up crew. It was gone for 8 weeks with no word from anyone until I call ahs. It comes back and works for another 4 weeksguess who I call, yeah ahs. they try to send out the same company for the thrd time, I tell them no way they can send some one else on give me a refund. Again take off work, but this time it’s for another contractor. He knows what he’s doing shows me just where it’s leaking and says he’s not going to take the dishwasher until he gets parts. He tells me that as long as I run it every day there will be no problem. If I don’t want to use it just shut of the water. Great he knows what he’s doing and he even calls once he orders the part just to tell me how long it will take to get it. Part comes in , take off work to meet the contractor. He can’t do a darn thing thanks to the nit wit that had worked on the dishwasher the last 2 times. The last contractor took off the feet and put blocks under my dishwasher. This contractor would be responsible for any damage he does, so I call ahs. They tell me that they have to send the first contractor back so that he can put the feet back on and pull out the dishwasher then they’ll call the 2nd contractor to fix the leak, and then call the first contractor back to put the dishwasher back. I’m done missing work thanks to ahs. The contract has been canceled.
I am in the process of working through a furnace replacement with AHS. I have already been told that I will have to cough up $1150 for all kinds of stuff. They are calculating the buyout. I am not having a good feeling on this. Can anyone let me know what kind of number to expect? Thanks.
On December 02,2008 I reqyuested services from AHS for Plumbing service and garage door. They both can out on the same day, the plumber was from A&D plumbing service he check my water closet on in my bathroom, stated that I needed overflow tub’s that why it was overflowing. He was wrong all , it’s needed was too tighten up the handle on the toilet-water closet.
The garage person didn’t want me in the garage while he was fixing the door because he didn’t fix it, the currention still don’t work rigth. So I written a complaint to AHS because they went along with what the plumbing complany & garage person. Took my money, so I cancell my contract with them in February 2009.
I recently terminated my home warrantee contract with AHS as their Houston area repair firm did not repair my dishwasher after multiple attempts. After 4+ visits by the AHS dishwasher contractor the dishwasher remained un-repaired during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The AHS firm did not properly connect with their contractor and visa versa regarding escalating the matter into “options” where the dishwasher is replaced. They certainly had a scam going together with the intent of not repairing my dishwasher. After the 4th visit by the AHS provided contractor, I called a regular repair firm and had the dishwasher repaired on the first attempt. I terminated the AHS contract same day. My selected firm (not AHS) replaced the drain pump on the first and only visit and all is working well. I had to pay $238 out of my pocket to implement this dishwasher repair of my own. The AHS supplier also damaged my new wood floors and advised me that they were not responsible to pay for secondary damages. Again, what a scam. I am jumping on the Class Action Lawsuit against AHS. See http://www.faughtclassaction.com for info.
Hey Steve in Houston,
What was the name of the company who tried to repair your dishwasher? The one that came out to install my dishwasher didn’t do it right and it leak and ruined the carpet in the next room. Send me an email at dirk33@yahoo.com.
I TO HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH AHS! I CANT BELIEVE THIS COMPANY KEEPS GETTING AWAY WITH THESE THINGS. MYSELF TO JUST HAD TO CALL AHS AGAIN TO GET MY TOILET REPAIRED. THE LAST COMPANY THEY SENT OUT (STEVE HATCHER PLUMBING)ARLINGTON,TX 76012 PHONE-817-461-4900 LICENSE #17611 INSTALLED A NEW TOILET IN 2005. LEWIS CAME OUT INSTALLED A BRAND NEW TOILET. WHILE HE WAS INSTALLING IT HE BROKE OFF A PIECE OF THE CERAMIC PART BY THE BOLT THAT IS INSIDE THE TANK. WHEN HE WAS FINISHED PUTTING THE TOILET IN THE TOLD ME HE BROKE OFF A SMALL PIECE OF THE TOILET. HE STATED THIS WOULDNT (HURT THE TOILET) WORKING. I BEING A SINGLE PARENT DIDNT THINK TO LOOK UNDER THE TANK WHERE HE BROKE THE PIECE OFF I WOULD HAVE (NEVER) LET HIM LEAVE WITHOUT FIXING IT. NOW IT HAS STARTED LEAKING ON THE FLOOR AND AHS WILL NOT COVER IT. I HAD TO BUY THE NEW TOILET TO INSTALL PLUS PAY THE 60.00 DED (PLUS $125.00 LABOR) (PLUS THE $158.00 FOR THE TOILET!!!! THEY ARE ALSO SENDING OUT THE FLY BY NIGHT COMPANIES TO DO WHAT LITTLE WARRANTY WORK THEY DO COVER IF AT ALL. ON TOP OF THIS REPAIR ITEM, LAST WEEK MY GARAGE DOOR BROKE. THE SPOCKET THAT OPENS THE DOOR OPENER IS (SUPPOSE TO LAST 5-10 YEARS) (BUT) WILL ONLY LAST 2-3- WEEKS AFTER THE WARRANTY IS UP. I FINALLY HAD TO BUY A GARAGE OPENER MYSELF BECAUSE AHS KEPT REPLACING THE PLASTIC SPROCKET WHICH IS AROUND $10.00 FOR THE $60.00 DEDUCTABLE. THESE COMPANIES THEY HIRE WONT GET TO WHY THIS PIECE KEEPS WEARING OUT COSTING (ME) $$$$$$. IF ANYONE KNOWS ANOTHER HOME WARRANTY COMPANY THAT IS FAIR PLEASE CONTACT ME AT MSLOVINMOM59@ATT.NET. THANKS, AND PLEASE!!!! STAY AWAY FROM AMERICAN HOME SHIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The tech came out for a charge of $55 and checked the furnace and found the part that was bad and said that if he replaced it that it would just go out again because the stack was getting hot. So he wrote this down and said he would be back. The next thing I know we are denied any service. I have had them out before and they did some snake work in the pipes and ended up charging me $300 plus the $55 service fee. This kind of business is not right. I would like to join in on the law suit. I can’t get logged on to the website thats listed where do I go? lossvet@cox.net
Kepp out of AHS reason: BBB processed a total of 2929 complaints about American Home Shield in the last 36 months, our standard reporting period. Of the total of 2929 complaints closed in 36 months, 998 were closed in the last year. I would recommend that anyone who has bought this contract cancel as soon as possible
I have the warranty program with AHS. Although I have had problem with companies that have been assigned to my repairs, I haven’t had problems with AHS. They gave me money toward another washer, because they tried to repair mine and said it would not cover it any longer. so I took the portion they offered. They have a few unproffessional companies working with them, that may be giving them a bad reputation. I called them and told them to note my account that those companies will not be allowed in my home. I have been talked to by some of the people from these unmentioned companies in PA with disrespect to the point that I almost called the police because I felt so Uncomfortable with them in my home.
I have not had heat in my home since January 12 (over three weeks). AHS sent United Home Services out and it became immediately clear that the technicians did not have a clue as to how to repair the furnace. They did decide that a motor in the furnace needed to be replaced and that it would take two weeks for the part to come in. After three weeks the part came in, but AHS decided that the part cost too much, and they would rather replace my 8 year old furnace. I would have to pay $575 in fees. They refused to call in another company, and I refused to do business with United Home Services. I had another company check my furnace, and they stated that the furnace did not need to be replaced. AHS offered me $711 toward the price of a replacement furnace; they will not pay for a repair. I want to cancel my policy, but right now I can’t get anyone to answer the phone. I wrote my congressman, filed a complaint with the Consumer Protection Agency, and reported my problem to the BBB (which ironically gives them an A+ rating).
In response to Pat (post #52), I am having that exact same problem with American Home Shield (“AHS”) right now. I am dumbfounded by the similarities between our two situations. You should absolutely get a second or third opinion about your furnace. The contractor AHS used to diagnose my furnace was 100% wrong, and according to the opinions of several experts in the industry, their contractor should have discovered the “actual” problem with my furnace right away. It’s become apparent that the contractor made a misrepresentation by giving us the diagnosis that he did and also by claiming the parts were unavailable. Anyway, I’m happy to discuss my situation with you further if you’d like. However, as it stands, our furnace did not need replacement. The problem was not what the contractor claimed it to be. AHS did not exercise due diligence and reasonable care in handling my service call and resolving my claim. I paid out of pocket to get second and third opinions and ultimately to fix my furnace. This is the third time I’ve had to use resources outside of AHS to resolve issues with covered items in my home. Needless to say, I will not be renewing my contract with AHS and will be taking measures to ensure I am reimbursed for everything they should have handled and paid for. If you believe there’s been fraud committed against you, then you have the right to contact the Attorney General’s office in your state and report that fraud. There are strict consumer protection laws in place to prevent fraud against consumers. Also, you should opt out of the class action suit by Feb. 8th or you will be barred from bringing lawsuits against AHS for the next 2 years. I empathize with you, and I hope my post proves beneficial to you. Good luck!!!
In my earlier post (#53), I forgot to include my email address. It is: shaysull@ymail.com.
These people came out to fix my refrigerator and stove. It took extended periods of time, and other repairman had to come back to fix the first fix as it was not done right. After at least 4 visits to my refrigerator report it was barely repaired. In the meantime, I had lost all the food in my freezer part of my refrigerator. Then there were postphonements because parts were said not to have arrived.
The company who services my HVAC gas pack came out to do planned maintenance as required by American Home Shield (AHS) and found that there are cracks in the face plate that is part of the heat exchangers.
The technicians told me that I should not use the unit due to the Carbon Monoxide threat. This was Friday January 29 2010. Today is Tuesday Feb 9, 2010 and I have been without a working HVAC unit for almost 2 weeks. Since then, I have been using space heaters and the electric oven to warm the house. I have 12 and 8 year old children in the house.
AHS wont authorize my maintenance company to order the $1405 part. I call the technician line 1-877-490-5690 and am told that they are waiting for my tech to call them with an explanation of the issue. They have at least twice already. The people who answer the phone at this number tell me that I shouldnt be calling the tech number and I need to call customer service at 1-800-776-4663. Customer service says they are trying to find the part. I ask, “why is the tech guys telling me that they are waiting on my maintenance company to call ?” They basically beat around the bush, “We’re ordering the part sir!”
They should live up to their end of the contract and repair the furnance as the contract clearly outlines. If not, I want my money back. I advised AHS and its mother company The ServiceMaster Company that I will be notifying other consumers via Consumer web forums, various other types of media as well as submitting complaints with related State and Federal organizations.
AHS SUCKS !
I have been with AHS since August 09 and never had the need for them until Feb 10. When I was having new carpet installed, a leak was found in the water heater. After putting everything on hold, AHS sent a contractor to check out the unit which is 28 years old. I told him I had noticed muddy discolored water when I ran the hot water and it did not seem to get very hot. I had not even noticed the leak in the closet. After the technician made a mess..when flushing out the heater..sediment from 28 years sprayed the hall, flooring, walls, ceiling, my bedroom, photographs, etc. He cleaned it up with my help and towels and told me it should be fine since he found the needle point leak. The next day my mom found the heater was leaking again. After speaking with AHS and the contractor, I was told they could not come out until possibly Monday which was four days later. I told them this was unacceptable and someone should be at my home to check unit that day. Since the carpet installers were coming the next day, I went to Lowe’s and had a new unit installed. The old unit had rusted and had a leak on the inside. It could not be repaired. Since AHS was not willing to assist me in any way, I stopped payment on the 60.00 check. I haven’t heard from the plumber as of yet but I am sure I will. I have tried to contact AHS to cancel warranty but unable to reach. I have contacted them on the website. I’ll wait to see if they answer.
The website is faughtclassaction.com. The Faughts are suing in Alabama on behalf of any US resident with inappropriately denied claims. The hearing is in March.
I am very upset with ahs too more like furious. the person sent to check out my furnace today must have been to the seminar on what to do and say so that he would not have to get his hands dirty so early in the morning-well it worked- after i paid the service fee of $60. As so many other complaints that i have read he used the “maintenance issue” even before i showed him the invoice of scheduled maintenance 2 months ago. He arrived at my house late and then before he was leaving he called ahs to report “his work” and told them he was at my house for 2 hours when in fact it was less that 1 hour. Never did a damn thing. I will be canceling asap.
Another unhappy customer with AHS. We’ve had our water heater leaking and AHS has sent Carter Plumbing out 3x’s. Each time we have paid 60.00 because it’s over 30 day perios. It still leaking today and AHS will not replace it. The plumbing company just replaced a valve and it still leaks. Second time, he just looked at it and said it needs another part. Well, it’s leaking again and now we have water damage on the wall. My husband just got off the phone with AHS and they will not replace it. They want to order another part but did not say when? It’s leaking and they want us to wait. We canceled and will take care of our home ourselves. How frustrating.
don’t you have to wait till your contract has expired before you can cancel? please respond if you have cancelled your contracts.
Does anyone know why the Edleson lawsuit site is not working? Has a settlement been reached? AHS declined to replace our 20 year old water heater last year when it rusted out – due of course to the fact that the plumber said the magic word “sediment”. Am assuming that we also have a shot under Faught – hopeful at least… Thanks for any info.
edleson is not working and faught was supposed to make a decision on march 10 the site has not been updated.
I had contractors come to repair my furish dishwasher and also my hot water heater the contractor came out to repair the AC furish calls A.H.S. and tells them the unit was tampered with, first he comes in with a writting pad looking as if he wasn”t coming to work. Contractor came to repair my dishwasher comes to my home with a attitude as if I sent him here, water was running from underneath the dishwasher and he got mad because he had on starch iron jeans on dishwasher don”t work today, hot water heater doesn”t keep hot water because the polit don”t stay lit.
AHS — DON’T DO IT! AS LONG AS THERE ARE MINOR THINGS TO FIX YOU GOT COVERAGE, IF IT’S SOMETHING MAJOR YOU GET A BIG STAMP “DENIED”. YOU ARE BETTER OFF SAVING YOUR MONEY AND COVERING YOUR OWN UNEXPECTED HOUSEHOLD PROBLEMS. NEVER AGAIN!
I call about my oven ahs sent some one out. they could not fix it.so they call ahs to let them no.ahs did not agree with them so sahs wonted another company to come out so another company came out.again they could not fix it .tried to order a part that took over 3 to 4 weeks.I went wihtout a oven for 3 months.I was saden by this it took so long to get a oven.
I have only been with this company for two weeks and they have charged for twice. I have automatic withdraw so the money has came out of my account twice. When I called no one knew who I needed to talk to. I want my money back.
Please don’t use American Home Shield/AHS.
Please does anyone have an update on the class action lawsuits? The Edleson website is not working and the Faught website hasn’t been updated. Thank you
I have checked the Faught class action website every day since March 10. No update. I never include myself in class action lawsuits, but I have made an exception on this one. I have never been more screwed over in my life than I was by AHS. I have everything documented and sitting there waiting for instructions on the next step.
If you are thinking about using AHS – DON’T!!!! I agree that the BBB report in combination with the class action lawsuit speaks volumes.
To attempt to keep this short, I’ll say we’ve called them three times and had issues with each time. The first time I was naive enough to just pay the plumber for the claim denied and move on. The second time, was another plumbing issue in which they tried to deny the claim based on how our floor tile was installed. The part needing replacement was the flange on the toilet and was simply rusted out – nowhere near the floor tile. After a week of fighting hard with them – hours lost on the phone – they finally covered it.
Now our are AC is out and we live in a very hot part of the country. It is 86 degrees in our home and they can’t seem to get a contractor out here for half a week.
If you are buying a home and the seller is offering AHS – here’s my recommendation: ask for cash in lieu of the warranty and stick it in a savings account for an emergency issue. Then at least you KNOW you can get it fixed up to that cash amount. Worst case scenario – have them go with someone besides AHS. But don’t give these guys a chance to stay in business – they are thieves!!!
We’ve been AHS customers for too long, and am currently researching alternatives. We’re currently having an AC unit replaced. I was on the phone many times with AHS, talked to three different supervisors and five phone jockeys. I got different responses to the same questions, if I got answers at all. I could write thousands of words here with the problems we’ve had with AHS over the years. AHS is the most daunting company I have ever dealt with. EXTREMELY poor customer service. Few straight answers to questions. And most repairs require multiple calls, follow-ups and occasionally arguments to get it done. Seems the only thing they have somewhat squared away is the billing department. Save yourself some grief and aggravation – don’t even consider AHS!!
wow!!!wish i knew all this 5-6 years ago.ahs has been sending useless companies out to fix my air unit sence 2005 and once again like every year 2times a year i had to call them for my air.they sent out acompany called( air comfort)which came and did a test but said they had to come back and of course they didnt!no one colud contact them (air comfort)not even ahs,not untill they called me back because i didnt leave sugh a nice message!@#$%^&* oh they cash the 60 dollar check!
Don’t Even Think About These Crooks! We were told not to refi on the house by a financial adviser. Our Heat Pump (a/c unit) went down. We called AHS, they sent a no-name person who probably did a/c work on the side. He came out, left, and AHS called us saying that we had mistreated our unit. We faught them on the phone, still nothing. We had to refi on the house to pay for the $9,000.00 unit out of pocket, and we had been with them for over 15 years!!
AHS are almost organized crime! I’m not kidding one freaking bit! From reading all of the other posts, We all can tell, they train their employee’s to give all of their customers the same line of crap. This is how they make money, it’s an “Organized” way of business! They did all of us the same way, so I call AHS “Organized Crime!”

AHS = ORGANIZED CRIME!
I checked the Faught website this morning and there is an update go to the bottom of the page click on Final Approval Order & Opinions it is dated 4/27/10 there is 60 pages of legal wording but what I could make of it has been OK’d. Please take a look at it and post what you get out of the update.
donna, thanks for pointing that out. I skimmed through the brief. Please note that I am not a lawyer and this is not legal adice… qualifier, qualifier, qualifier… OK. Looks like the court approved the settlement. Also, during this process (in mediation, perhpas), the Faughts declined getting a bigger payout for themselves at the expense of the rest of us. Very cool. The only thing they got beyond their repair bill is $5,000 each. Very small amount in my opinion for their troubles. Maybe if we get reimbursed, we can figure out a way to send them $20 each or something. I would do that in a heatbeat. The Faughts still have to submit their claim like the rest of us though. Their attorneys tried to get them their $8,000 repair bill money up front (without submitting a claim). I could not find anything on the schedule of when we can start making claims, but I will keep checking the website every day. Also, be aware. I have noticed a slew of e-mails from AHS in my junk mail inbox in the last few months (even before I started posteing on this site). I use a seperate e-mail address for to post on things like this because I suspect they sell the e-mail addresses. Anyway, AHS in true form to their company values and morals appears to have resorted to spamming to drum up more business for their failed business model that is going to have to pay through the nose, thanks to this lawsuit. I almost shed a tear for them until I remembered the hell they put me thorough when I had been 1 month into owning my first home.
AHS is a complete scame! As we all know and have expressed in detail. The $60 check is always cashed and every repair person we have had does nothing! Funny my car runs great, my house is spotless, I have the date on every air filter so we know when to change them, but AHS says we have mistreated our home so they can deny my claims! I told my husband when we first got together to cancel them because we could save the monthly fee ourselves for any future issues-he know agrees with me!
I am trying to understand why AHS has an A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau. I cancelled my contract with these crooks after only 8 months and I am glad I got out when I did based on all of the reviews I have read. I wish I had googled them before I purchased the contract because I would have saved the money I paid out so far. To the person who asked if you had to wait until the end of your contract to cancel, the answer is no. You can cancel any time. They have horrible customer service and incompetent contractors. My AC contractor cancelled the morning of the appt with no explanation and AHS did nothing. They didn’t send out another contractor, didn’t even annotate that the contractor cancelled but had the nerve to brag about how great this contractor’s record was. I said of course he has a great record because if you never annotate any complaints against your contractors or reprimand them, you have no record of their bad service. I spoke to a supervisor to ask why was I paying them when I was having to do all of the work as far as trying to get another contractor and find out why the original one didn’t show up and she told me that their job was simply to set up the appointment and “hope” that the contractor shows up! I told her I don’t pay for hope and I can look in the yellow pages and set up my own appts if that’s all they do. I thought I was paying for a guarantee of quality service with a reputable repair company that has been bonded and verified by AHS. Does anyone know why the BBB has rated them as A+ especially if they have a class action last suit against them? Does that mean I cannot trust the BBB either?
So glad that I did not go with them. When I told them that I would have to think about signing up, and I’d call back later in the day, the sales rep. immediately hung up on me!! With that kind of intro to their service, I am now glad that I checked on-line.
AHS is really organized crime, I totally agree!! They’ve send someone out to look at the AC, the unit had shorted. According to the contractor AHS would not cover it, because it wasn’t regular wear and tear?! They’ve also quoted us $1,800 to fix the broken AC. AHS obviously denied the repair and we’ve cancelled our contract immediately. We also didn’t trust the contractor obviously and got another quote from a local company — $180 for the exact same thing. Took them 10 minutes to fix it as well!
I think they have some deal with the contractors to ensure the claim is always denied and then the contractors still make a lot of money out of the us, the customer!
I’ve been dealing with ahs for the last 5 years and had nothing but problems since my funace went out about three years ago (middle of winter and they couldn’t get a new one for 2 weeks from there companies. Now my washer went out 2weeks ago, they tell me a new one will be delivered on the 16th . Well there contractor supposedly tried to contact us and got no respose so they sent the washer back and now ahs says it wont be until the 28th. The thing is I HAVE CALLER I.D. and noone tried to contact me so this is a crock on there part.. Bunch of crooks
If you are even thinking about considering ahs, run, run very fast! after 15 yrs and maintaining our home properly, we just had our first real service request. a third visit by same A/C contractor said coil needed replacing but that we had to pay $1255 for non-covered items. I run a construction firm and checked with our subs who said we were being ripped off. Complaints to ahs resulted in them just saying they would pay us $380 and we could do it ourselves. we are cancelling and looking at remediation.
i was denied several times throughout my time with ahs. my heater still having problems. my oven had to be replaced at my cost. i had to buy a new washer dryer. my fridge is dying a slow death they refused to fix it can’t afford a new one. my dishwasher doesn’t work cant afford a new one. my air conditioner needed part replaced they had an excuse why they couldn’t. i need a new hot water heater. i eventually got smart and canceled ahs. i sent another letter asking for help from them they said i’m sorry they can’t help me. i went to your put in a claim site it wont come up page is blank. please wont someone help me with this ahs mess. i am so over this company. oh yes imagine this they sent me an offer to sign up again. LOL like i would actually join again, how stupid do they think i am. fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. thanks lela
After being with AHS for so many years my 5 year old water heater broke I ended up paying $750.00 out of pockets expenses, according to them there were a few things not covered by the contract. I got ripped off. I could buy a water heater for $400.00 for GOD SAKE! I am not going to renew my contract this year, that’s for sure.
Dont expect to get any money back if you cancel, This company is nothing but a bunch of THEIVES. I cancelled my contract after repeated problems with them sending unqualified, shaddy repair people to fix my a/c, which they never fixed. I called to cancel and got a letter 2 weeks later saying they wont refund a penny (I still had 7 months left on the contract) they claimed they spend more than the $508 that I paid, so I get nothing back. ANOTHER CLASS ACTION SUIT NEEDS TO BE FILED AGAINST THEM. THEY ARE CROOKS PRAYING ON INNOCENT PEOPLE.
I have used AHS three times for repairs on appliances. My dishwasher is out at the moment. The AHS designated contractor came to the house, late, and figured out what was wrong with it and what needed to be replaced. They will have to contact AHS to authorize the parts that need to be replaced. I asked the repairmand what the chances are of getting this 12 year old dishwasher replaced instead of repaired. He informed me that AHS will not authorize replacement unless parts are no longer available, otherwise I can pay for one out of pocket. I have been sending money to AHS for eight (8) years now and it suddenly dawned on me, I send them money to broker repairmen and I still have to pay a “deductible” for a repairman to come to the house and tell me that they have to get authorization to replace parts. I have no idea when I will see the repairman again and my dishwasher is just sitting there doing nothing. I suppose if AHS denies the parts replacement, I will have to pay for the new parts and the labor. I expect better response to my needs. I have read too many complaints to wonder why I am still paying them. I have a phone and I can find repair people on line. Is it worth $45 per month to do what I can do on my own?
I just cancelled my acount with AHS when the renewal came up this year. I wanted to find out when they were going to stop charging my credit card for the payments. When I called them they could pull up the contract which started in 2003 but nothing since then. I was surprized when they told me that my account number changed each year. has anybody else run into this problem with them?
I was a contractor for AHS. No, AHS did not have a deal with us to deny your claims. To be perfectly honest, we, the contractors, are in worse shape than you, the customer. We DONT get paid what you think we get paid. We are paid a flat rate, just over $100 to come to your homes and repair or replace your single or multiple items. Does that sound like AHS is paying us off?? We are ripped far more than the customer. We do NOT get paid for your parts, we have to eat that cost. If you call in a toilet running constantly, a water heater with a pilot light out, and a garbage disposal not working, we have to repair or replace ALL of that for the flat rate (reminder–only a little over $100 that we get paid and that total is after your $60 service fee and a discount that we are REQUIRED to give AHS), and if you do the math, we are in the negative after the garbage disposal. WE ARE THE ONES THAT LOSE MONEY! AHS doesn’t care about our overhead to run our business, they just care about meeting the paper contract that they sold to you. They do not share any responsibility in the liability placed on us nor do they support their contractors. Why do you have to wait so long for service? Because AHS sends more work orders than a company can handle to meet their contractual guidelines daily and requires us to provide service in 48 business hours. How much is a common man expected to do in a day?? AHS requires them to do much more than possible. So, you tell me, how is the contractor making all of this big money?? They aren’t, they are ripped off as well!
this may piss alot of you off as ex-ahs customers, but up until the very end, i had a good relationship with them with all the repairs that i needed. i lucked out with my home as there was a pre-purchased year of maintenance included when i moved in. let me tell you, when this was discovered, it was really used. all it cost me each time was $60 dollars and most of the time the technician blew that off if he had to come back, even after several months. the beginning of the end was when we had them looking at our central air unit which was not working at all when we moved into the home, we knew it wasn’t working, we assumed that this was something they would not even look into since it was dead and not just broken. they replaced it with a completely new central air system for $60 and some freon purging fee. all total of about $200, not bad for a brand new central air system. the bad part was when the a/c guy was check the blower system out, he noticed that the furnace system had a minute crack in the heating core or exchanger, this they would not fix or replace as they said that this was a long time existing problem before we moved in and did not break while we were in the house. we reminded them of the a/c system and for some reason this did not seem to matter to them, the heater was another story and they were not going to fix it although it was functioning but the technicians were begging them to o.k. the repair as they said it was bad. if we had to use the heat, we could kill ourselves from from leaking gas, etc. ahs said no. mind you we got quit a bit out of them in the year that we had them to use, including a brand new 5 burner stove top. they actually sent a letter to me saying that they were not going to accept a renewal from us as we over used them in the year that we had them. i didn’t know that there was a maximum number they could be used in any stretch of time. then the class action suits started coming in . . . interesting. wouldn’t mind getting the money back from the furnace i had to buy out of pocket.
We worked for AHS for a short period of time. The would tell us what dollar amount we had to average to continue to get work from them. We tried doing repairs correctly as we have for the past 30 years. Unfortunately, we were over their average ($218). They wanted us to simply add refrigreant as opposed to repairing the leak in an air conditioner for example. We gave up, not wanting to ruin our reputation in our service area.
I am currenlty dealing with the aftermath of an AHS service call. The service call was requested to determine and correct the problem with my central air conditioning system covered under my AHS home warranty contract.
During the service call the technician sent to my home by AAC performed a very limited scope inspection of the unit and attempted to assign cause of the system issues to a dirty air filter. Only upon insistence of my wife did the technician run a check on the refrigerant level (R-22) and identified that the charge was essentially empty. The technician made no apparent attempt to locate the cause of the loss of refrigerant. The technician then claimed the loss was due to the system being overworked due to the “lack of a fusebox” for the unit. He also commented that the outer surface coils on the exterior compressor unit were “dirty”. Prior to his arrival the technical attempted to convince my wife by phone that the service call should be rescheduled claiming the “the weather was not too bad”. Based on the limited range of his inspection and his comment I feel the technician did not conduct this service call with the proper depth of investigation. According to the feedback I have received from AHS it appears that based on the report of this limited inspection AHS has not authorized the repair/replacement of my AC system.
In follow-up to the inspection conducted by AAC I have engaged the services of an independent 3rd party licensed air conditioning service firm to inspect the system and identify the causes of the system not to operate properly. The independent inspection was significantly more comprehensive and included removal of the top fan on the exterior AC compressor unit and removal of the side access panel. This technician placed a partial R-22 charge in the system and used a tracing device in an attempt to locate the site of any leaks that may provide an explanation for the R-22 loss from the system. During this more detailed inspection the independent technician identified that the leak seemed to be located in the system accumulation cylinder. Given the age of the system the housing of the accumulator just gave out.
I questioned the independent technician about the electrical installation of the system. Base on his understanding of the applicable codes there is an adequate electrical shut-off located within sight of the unit as required by article 440 of the California Electrical Code. Article 440 requires you to locate the disconnecting means within sight of, and readily accessible from, air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment. “Within sight” means visible from, and not more than 50 ft from, each other. You can install the disconnecting means on or within the air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment-but not on the access panels. The existing circuit breaker that controls the air conditioner unit and would trip upon excessive load is located within 30 inches of the exterior compressor and is in direct sight of the compressor.
I have sent a copy of the invoice and findings of the independent technician to AHS (and the AHS service provider). Based on this information and the fact that the failure appears to stem from normal use and wear of the system I am formally requesting that AHS cover the repair/replacement of the system components required to make my home air conditioning system operational. I have no idea how this will work out
Don’t hold your breath chances are you will not hear back from AHS and if you do they will find some other excuse not to replace your unit.
This is AHS at it’s in North Carolina
A Triangle woman, who has been without a working air conditioner for more than a month and a half, says she is fed up.
Alexine Miller says she wants answers, as she has a home warranty that she thought would protect her, but instead she says she’s getting nothing but hot air.
“You can see I’m perspiring, water is falling off of me,” Miller said. “I lost a little weight. The heat killed my plants.”
Her plants wilted and her poor dog has been panting for weeks. Miller’s air conditioning went out the end of May and she says she called her home warranty company, American Home Shield, right away.
“Within 48 hours someone came out and fixed it,” Miller said. “Two weeks later, it was broken again and the same company came out again and said they couldn’t work on this system because it’s not made any more and the parts are hard to get.”
Miller says American Home Shield sent another HVAC company out and she says they told her they could get the part, but that was on June 16 –six weeks later Miller still has no fix.
“This is the hottest summer on record and I think I have been patient,” Miller said.
American Home Shield did tell Miller they would reimburse her up to $100 for a window air conditioning, which is in her bedroom and it has been giving her relief at night, but it doesn’t cool her whole house.
“You have to give them time to find the parts and I was trying to be fair, but they have not been fair to me,” Miller said. “I’ve been miserable and I think it’s time this comes to an end and they should replace my system.”
ABC11 Eyewitness News I-Team Troubleshooter Diane Wilson got in touch with American Home Shield and after looking into it, a representative said since the part is still on back order through the manufacturer; American Home Shield has decided to replace the entire air handling unit in order to expedite a resolution.
On Monday, the unit was installed and after a month and a half of no air, Miller says she is finally getting cooled off.
The rep with American Home Shield also said they sincerely regret the delays Miller has experienced and this is not a typical experience.
Due to the delays, the rep added, American Home Shield did agree to pay for the additional charges related to the installation that would not be typically covered under the warranty.
Not a lot of action on this page or the official Faught Class Action websie lately… Does anyone know anything? I imagine it must be being appealed or something. I still check this page and the offical page everyday. I can’t wait to cash that check from AHS. It will be one of the highlights of my year (whatever year it is).
Does AHS not have an obligation to inspect what they are insuring. I have been told now that my HV/AC units were improperly installed and not covered on a home we purchased 4 years ago (and have been paying for the coverage ever since). I think it should be their responsibility of due dilligence to inspect prior to insuring instead of taking our money for years and then telling us something is not covered. We now have to spend over 4k out of pocket to replace the units. We had AHS service one of the units last year and were never made aware of the installation problem. Any great ideas???
The faught classaction lawsuit is still working on the appeals I hope it does not take too much longer I also will take great pleasure in cashing my check.
I agree with these letters of fraud !! I too was a victim of double house calls , overcharging , refusing service to me. I called them for a problem and they told me they did not receive payment for house call ( $55.00 and also the water heater co. which came down on their price of $360.00 to $250.00 , total $305.00 , two checks ) I faxed them copies three times before they finally accepted their mistake !!Also the water heater com. said the employee never turned in the two checks .It took me 10 days to prove I gave him the checks, and they cashed them !I pay ins. and it still cost me $305.00 for a $179.00 water heater. also A/C Two $55.00 visits in a week for a minor two minute fix I showed him , yet he only fixed one so he could come back and fix the plugged p.v.c. pipe ( time, two min. ) first time loose wire, I showed him the drain pipe and the stain . There are two pipes ( one under the roof line and one at ground level, if the top is plugged the condensation comes out the bottom pipe ,I showed him this ) It was a neighbor who told me this ,He should have fixed it the first time .He used a blow dryer reverse action to unplug the pipe, two minutes ,thus another $55.00 trip charge to A.H.S.Plus more stories on dish washer and range . They give you no choice in who does the work and extra charges above the monthly payment..
I wish I could sue American Home Shield for negligence. They sent out an incompetent dryer repair person who said nothing was wrong with dryer and I needed to have the dryer vent in my wall cleaned. I did that and reconnected dryer. 3 days later I had a dryer fire and it burned through 150 worth of new Kohls clothes. THey they sent out another repairman who said I should have known that dryer was full of lint too if the wall was full of it. I told them why didn’t the first technician tell me this. He told me nothing wrong with dryer. Now American Home Shield refusing to cover dryer saying lint is a maintenance item. I told them I would have not had dryer fire if first technician they sent out did their job.
I purchased AHS for my home ac unit went out after paying premiums and charging 60.00 for for call they would not fix in 102 plus degree weather. Not happy with this company at all. Still Hot
I do believe that the east coast should get together and file a class action law suit against these crooks. I am in Fl and have been dealing with AHS for just 3 yrs. I have been more fortunate than those of you on this site, Call me critical/suspicious whatever – but I didn’t trust these guys from the get go. My home came with the- it is a very old place so I decided that I would keep them as I was replacing things that were old anyway – in case something BIG died off. Well last winter ( probably the coldest one in a long time in Fl) I had no heat for 3 months other than a small apce heater and thankfully another working unit in th family room. The techs that came out contradicated each other in their diagnosis of the problem. I was told by one of these guys that mu handler should be replaced. The other one made no comment when questioned. I know that thses comapnies do not get full remimbursement for their work – but if they refused to work for this type of company in the first place they would not get screwed!! And we the consumer might get better service if companies like AHS were forced to pay their service people better. It really is the trickle down effect – AHS craps on the service people they crap on us the consumer and AHS comes out only slightly stinky!! What gets me is that realtors recommend this company to begin with!!!

Well I am not feeling much hope in getting anything replaced by AHS after reading all the negative comments. I have had a contract with AHS for years and have had some service calls in that time, mostly positive in outcome. However this latest problem is the final straw for me. A few months ago I had to apply for a new debit card because I had misplaced my major one that I use for all my expenses. I notified AHS of the new debit account number and promptly went on with my life. In late 11/10 I received a form letter from AHS saying that I no longer had a contract with them, offering to reinstate me. Well at first I thought it was a form letter sent to a million and one people but then I got concerned and a few days later I called them. The customer rep said that they were never able to update my records from several months ago and that I did NOT have an active contract with them. She gave no explanation as to why I would not have gotten a phone call, email or letter explaining that they were unable to input the new debit card number into their system. She apologized for my inconvenience, saying that the new contract number- yes, you read right, yet another new contract number as some of you have indicated they do- would be effective with that day’s date of 12/8/10. She also said that if there had been a problem with any of my household items covered by my contract would have gone out, that AHS would have honored the contract once the accounting error was corrected. So again I go on with life and on 12/20/10 I discover that my heater is not working. Now I live in the Central Valley of CA where we have recently had flooding and cold temps. I have health problems that make having no heat a major problem. So I call AHS and find out that again they were not able to make my debit card number work in their system and I do not have a valid contract with them. It is odd that only they have this problem with my card, the grocery store, Walmart and any other merchant where I use the card on a daily basis runs it through without a problem. Let me make it clear to you all that there is always plenty of money in this account for bills so that is not the issue. Of course because there is no valid contract they also would not generate a service request and told me after I gave them the card # a third time that it would take 3 to 5 days for their processing dept to run the card through and that was way faster than giving them a bank routing number. It is 12/27/10 and I am still sitting in a cold house, figuring that I might as well trot out my checkbook, pay my regular reputable service company to replace the unit because AHS is playing games with me. So beware and run away like a big dog!
Are there any other reputable companies out there? Because it seems AHS is a fraud. How can I join the class action suit?
I tried for months and months to get them to repair my central air conditioner. they would come out and say oh its this and its that then it finally went out completely and the service guy said well since we can’t fix it we have to replace it. same thing i saw on contract. so after weeks talking to the main company they informed me that they would not be replacing my unit. its been 2 years now and i have had no air or heat. fortunately i have fans and a fireplace. this company is bull s**t. they claimed it was a pre existing condition. i had the plan for years before i called them about the heat pump. just another way to get out of paying for something. They just didn’t want to pay the 6000 to replace it. they were good about fixing the hot water heater and the busted faucet. not as much money involved. oh yeah and they didn’t think twice about taking my service call money when they came out the 10-12 times to tell me they were going to replace it but never did. I hope they get what ever they deserve. Evil gets what evil deserves.
just won a small claims court case against AHS…they were a no show..won default judgement..AHS sent us the court ordered payment within 30 days of judgement. Filed case on line..spent 1 hour in court..received $6,060.00…very easy to do…dont let them get away with it…file lawsuits..they never show..you win automatically…in california you can file the small claims case (up to $7,500.00) on-line…the court will also serve via certified mail the AHS california rep. in Los Angeles (the group that accepts legal processes)…it cost an additional $10.00…we argued with AHS over an A/C coil problem…they first denied the claim..then offered us 400.00..then thretened law suit..up it to 800.00..then 1400.00…then after we filed suit..$2,800.00…we went and had our own A/C company install the top of the line unit..$5,800.00…then sued…we won…it is just like the lawyers on the internet state..file a suit..they never show up..you win by default….I have the bank account numbers from AHS bank….if they do not pay..hire a marshall to attach the bank acct..they can collect that way…it only took me a total of 2 hours to get even with them…
.
when i first was introduce to AHSC I like everything about the service and i signed up i had a airconditioning and heating problem when i called the company and told them what was going on they told me that my contract did not cover what i need fix the payments were comeing out and through my morgage company i cancle the contract right after that but they continue to take the payments out for a month or more i had a hard time getting my money back returned so i really dont recomend this company
I hate AHS. They have cost me money, time, headaches, stress, and lost time dealing with unreturned phone calls, empty promises, and incompetent technicians. After five weeks, I still have the same problem. Technicians didn’t show up, gave flaky reasons for why the item was broken, and I finally decided to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in Iowa, which routes the complaint to Tennessee. I also filed a complaint with the California Department of Insurance, sending documentation of the poor service and contract breech. ANY HOME WARRANTY COMPANY HAS TO BE BETTER THAN AHS. I’d be ashamed to work for them, and if it wasn’t for US CONSUMERS, THEY WOULDN’T HAVE A JOB! It’s time people stood up to them and hold them accountable for their poor actions!
My fridge has not been working for 9 weeks and the company Gulf Appliance will not say it’s not repairable. I’ve had to rent a fridge paying money out of my own pocket to keep my food cold. AHS will not do anything to help my situation and continues to let Gulf come out to try and repair it. Gulf has been here 6 times and the tech admitted he can’t do anything else. He told me it can’t be repaired yet the owner/manager of Gulf (AHS choice repair service) refuses to say it’s non-repairable. After 9 weeks.. I’ve had enough. Report this to Attorney General Office for consumer protection and find an attorney who will process another class action law suit. I’m ready to call the local news to warn other consumers of AHS and the company GULF in Maryland who works for them.
We reported to AHS that our stove was not working in December of 2010. They said they would need 3 weeks to “research” it and get back to us. After 3 weeks, we were told that they would have the part in 7 weeks or we could accept $192 toward a new stove. We chose to have it repaired. After 7 weeks, it still was not repaired. We were then told it would need to be replaced. After many more calls, they finally had someone come out to deliver and install a new stove. The new stove would not fit and we were told that they do not make modifications. So I have TWO stoves in my kitchen that are worthless!!!! My kitchen counter will have to be cut/modified and paid for by me before the stove can be installed. This is utter B.S.
Avoid AHS. Their prices keep going up and you sometimes have to get the contract out to argue with them and show them exactly how wrong they are. Unfortunately for them, I work for a large company (10,000 + employees) and I have started spreading the word whenever we hire employees from out-of-state (average 1,000 a year), who are looking for houses and/or warranties do not use AHS. as soon as this year’s contract is up, I will definitely cancel.
I was NOT happy with American Home Shield the first year I used them. My heat went out during one of the coldest winters in North Texas. When I called in a service repair request I was told someone would contact me within 2 hours; 4 hours went by and I called back and was told my another representative that they didn’t know why I was told 2 hours because they have 24 hours to respond to the request and then went on to comment that “if I was THAT cold maybe I should go stay at a hotel”! Three days later I get a call by a contractor at 7 p.m. and I was told that if they came out that evening I would be responsible for paying an after hours service call, which I was NOT willing to do. On the 4th day when the contractor finally came out I was told they had to order a part that would take 2 weeks to get here, so basically it was going to be three weeks before I would have heat. It was not until I raised boo-coo’s of hell was I finally told they could have the part overnighted! I vowed at that point never to use AHS again. However before I knew it, it was time to renew and I didn’t feel like taking the time to research other companies, so feeling that “something was better than nothing” I reluctantly renewed — it’s been a problem ever since! This time has been with billing. Now when I renewed I had to make the first payment over the phone. Two months later I got a delinquent letter in the mail, stating that I was a month behind. Go online and check to make sure that I had made all the payments and indeed I had. When I called AHS about it the representative said something about back dating the renewal to cover the time that had elapsed and a bunch of other crap! Rather than stress myself out, I sent in two payments. Two months later I get another delinquent letter, I call and was told the same thing and they have REFUSED to bring my account current even though I have made 14 payments on 12 month contract! Today I received a call on my cell from the agent asking me if I was going to renew, I asked him “ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FREAKING MIND”? Told him about my issues of the last two years and he said “well we are the #1 home warranty company, we’ve been in business for 40 years” for which my reply was “I suggest you Google yourself…you’re #1 alright, but it’s in COMPLAINTS” and hung up! It is better to NOT have a home warranty than to spend your time, money, and energy dealing with this company.
AHS was great back in 2004 when I first purchased the warranty. They should be ashamed of how they are ripping people off now. A big problem is that they hire companies that are paid by the visit not by the job. My well pump went up a few years back and the local company can out , pulled and replaced it without any problems. A year later my pump went up again and they sent a company from Baltimore (now I live in Western Maryland an hour and half away). They showed up and tried to pull the pump by hand (my pump is almost 200ft down). They pulled it up 15ft and decided it was too hard to pull. They put it back, packed up and left without tell me anything. I went back out and they were gone. ASH calls me, 10 minutes later to say I owed the $60 for the service call and they won’t service my warranty until I pay. AHS also said, my well collapsed and would not cover any plumbing until I GOT A NEW WELL! Ridiculous, I had to pay H&H well drilling to come out and pull my pump and replace it. I had to pay out of pocket to have this done. H&H Well drilling also had to write me a letter to confirm to AHS that my well had not collapsed. Weeks of fighting with AHS I got them to give $1,500.00 their max, but that did not cover the cost or my lost time from work. My Frig went up a month later and they told me they couldn’t get anyone out for a week and that the company from Baltimore would be the one’s working on the refrigerator, “what they are a plumbing company”? I told them not to bother.
Crooks that’s all I can say. Had this company for 4 years and never needed anything so when I do have a leak under kitchen cabinet I called and they said I had a crack in the Garbage disposal but that it had been installed properly. So for 3 years it worked fine and now that it has a crack it was installed properly. Keep your money this company is a rip off.
Every time I contact them, nothing is covered. This last time though–I am fighting back. I called them today because we are replacing a French Drain on the side of our house (which of course, isn’t covered) and found that the pipe from our house to the sewer system was basically being held together by the dirt around it. We moved the dirt and exposed a big crack. The toilet always has ran on and off and I recently noticed air bubbles when it happened…so now I know why. Also nearby and underground is a tree stump. The technician they sent said it’s “not covered” and want’s to charge us $600. The stump was just nearby. There are no roots around or in the pipe, but because it’s nearby, they are claiming it’s “root damage” and is saying that it’s not covered. I’m disputing it with them, but after reading all these comments, I’m not feeling too positive.
AHS. On the 8th of april 2011 my dishwasher and washing machine were to be repaired. dishwasher was diagnosed with timer problem and it was replaced (improperly left parts out had to get parts back from them later and fix myself). And washing machine was taken to be repaired because a water leak in the basket. Brought back on wed the 13th installed and tested to find the leak was worse and now the lid saftey button was broken. I made them leave it over night so I could get my laundry caught up(for a family of 4). And they would pick from front porch on that Fri.the 15th. They did not pick up on friday called they said they forgot and would pickup sat. the 16th in the morning that afternoon no one came so called again. They said they would be there for sure that evening. Again no one showed. Sunday the 17th around noon they called and said they where on the way but needed me to help put in truck because he forgot the dollie aand would have to go back and get it so i said i would help. They said they should have it done by tue the 19th. No one came or called. We Called on wed. the 20th. They said it was fixed and would be delivered thur. the 21th at 5:00p while on confrence call with Ahs and Star Services and my wife. So all involved where on same page. On Thur. the 21th no one came again. We called the repair man directly he said it was not done and never said it was and that they can not figure out why it is leaking. And did not know anything about delivering it. Now AHS says they can’t do anything about it until Star Services give a diagnosis. And star says they do not know what is wrong with it. We told them to bring it back broken we will fix it our selves. We have heard nothing from anyone. As of now 2 weeks without washer and no answer in sight. This is rediculous and completly unprofessional.
What a bunch of crooks! Just like that Bernie Madoff guy. They take your money and you don’t get the promised services in return. AHS is a good name for them A** H Society!
My husband and I recently last year bought our house and had a horrible time with AHS getting our first issue, busted water tank, that came about on Christmas day of all days, only two months after of buying our home. It took 10 phone calls over a week just to get someone out to look on the problem, mainly because they were calling companies over 90 miles away, not locally, to service us and then the company refused to cover it and the water tank ended up costing us several hundred dollars. Our contract with them isn’t even marked as to what policy we were given in the first place and now with a number other issues we’re looking at having to just let them sit until we can save up for a better policy with another company, because AHS says we don’t have the proper policy to cover the issues. Apparently there is another class action lawsuit against the company and I will fully be gettin in on it as will other in our area as they have had the same issues of problems and patch jobs being done instead of the job being done correctly from the start or just having issues getting someone to respond.
Are you really settling for $45 to $60 each? Check the AHS contract under letter “L” Miscellaneous. AHS claims their surety bond is held with Liberty Mutual in E. Carroll Iowa. Call the number listed and the phone will be answered by an AHS employee by the name of Beau Cullum pretending to be Liberty Mutual. Ms. Cullum also doubles as the CEO David Crawford’s executive administrative worker. So tell me how can one person be in both Iowa and Tennessee (corporate location) at the same time? Easy, as AHS perpetrates FRAUD on the unsuspecting consumer on a regular basis. They pretend to be their own insurance company and answer the phone as Liberty Mutual. How can that not be FRAUD people? And you are settling for $45 to $60 each? Wake up and smell the money. I rest my case.
did they settle and when we saw no refund
Here is the latest info on the case (dated 2/4/2011):
USCA Case Number 11-10459-A for 179 Notice of Appeal filed by Chip and Karon Edleson. (AVC) (Entered: 02/08/2011)
I agree this is a horrible company, my experience has been I originally had 210 warranty just as bad. They sent nija ac out to install a coil, then just dropped me ,no explaination. So I went with ahs who came out and said we won’t fix it beacuse the coil isn’t installed properly and doesn’t have a drain pain. I contacted 210 home warrantly they informed me that they were not liable and nija no longer worked for them. I contacted nija they claimed it was 210 liable because they ordered what they asked them to and installed it. After 6 months of getting better business bureau involved nija finally came out and reinstalled coil, water ran down my door because the pan was absent i was told. I have damage to my door. After the installation I had ahs come back out. They said it’s stll not installed correctly, called nija they came back out saying we have done what we can. You need a condenser $950.00. I keep going back and fourth $60.00 each time ahs comes out and my air is still not fixed. I’m not sure what I should do next everyone is claiming they are not responsible, I feel that whatever the problem was ahs should have fixed it they are my home warranty company I asked if I could just drop the ac from the contract since it’s useless, they said you can drop it next year doing renewal,That’s not on the contract. Are there any ligitimate home warranty companies out there?
I contact AHS because my whirlpool tub leaked into my closet, a plumber came out and cut a hole in the closet wall and said it was not the motor or the jets leaking. He reported back to AHS and they sent out a pool and spa repair person, who cut a hole in my bathroom wall and stated that it was a plastic part that connected the tub to the plumbing that was leaking. The part was $50 dollars and not covered under the warranty. I was told by the spa person that it would cost $425.00 plus the part to repair it. I requested that he mail me the part C.O.D and I would get someone else to fix it. The plumber that originally came out reported back to AHS that he would repair the tub for $325.00. I rarely use my home warranty and feel like it should have been repaired. I had the maintenance guy from work to look at my tub and the part that was leaking is call a tub shoe and it does connect to the plumbing and is a plumbing part. The tub should cost less than $20.00 dollars. I am getting my maintenance man at work to repair it and when my contract is up with AHS in January, 2012, I am canceling my contract. I know that the economy is bad, but this company is making money hand over fist and the people who are responsible for their growth are getting thrown under the bus. DON’T TAKE CHANCES WTIH THIS COMPANY, SAVE YOUR MONEY AND USE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS THAT CAN NEGOTIATE PRICES WITH YOU AND YOU CAN GET SEVERAL OPINIONS AS TO THE REPAIR NEEDED. RIP OFF! RIP OFF! RIP OFF!
Our cook top glass broke. Called to AHS. A technician came said i Have to send a claim to AHS. Next day he said Ahs DENIED THE CLAIM EVEN THOUGH ITS COVERED UNDER THE AGREEMENT. The TECHNICIAN SAID IT WILL COST US 450$. dON’T DEAL WITH THEM. iF YOUR HOUSE HAS OLD APPLIANCES, THEY WILL NEVER FIX ANYTHING, ONLY MANOR THING LIKE TOILET LEAK

AHS is pulling a new scanm now.
They have conveniently shutdown their dispatch system and service website and are unable to take service calls. The system at https://www.ahsservice.com/csc/CustomerServiceLoginController simply says:
AHS Customer Service Center system error An error has occurred. We have been informed of this error and are taking measures to remedy it at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience.
How convenient! When you call, you get the same story that they are unable to take your service call. They tell you to call back Wednesday, and it’s Monday! But, call to make a payment and their payment system is miraculously up and running.
AHS should be put out of business for deceptive practices in all states!
t happened to the Faught class action suit? I have not received anything!
The Faught Class Action has been appealed

The worst company I have ever deal with. There are here just to take your money and do absolutely nothing. This people do not even care about your situation. I am without hot water almost ten days,I called them up , they are giving me advise how can I use my stove to make hot water and what else I can do, but would not do their job. Goverenment should make law to shut down company like this.
Advanced Hair Studio is well oriented and the procedure here for hair loss treatment is very superb and fantastic. The laser hair therapy treatment with the laser machine is superb and it is really an advanced treatment. All staff in Advanced Hair Studio are very nice and co-operative and also well disciplined.
When will the funds from the Class Action Lawsuit be distributed and how much will they be?
Ken, The case appears to be in appeals, etc. It looks like it may have something to do with the Edleson case in California. I was able to obtain the case file and posted the latest updates below. I personally have checked the official website and this website every work day for the past 78 weeks. I have a reminder on my calendar to do so. I have never despised anything more than I do AHS. Max
In 2010, I got in touch with the Advanced Hair studio. They are just too strict when it comes to take consultation appointment with them. Why can’t hair loss be treated as an emergency?? ?. I was impressed with them on my very first visit.
I first noticed my hair loss at around the age of 21; I saw my hair was thinning in a horseshoe pattern. Before I could do anything about it, it got worse. At age 23 my hair loss had progressed to such a state where I saw my hairline receding and my forehead was turning bigger and bigger. I just didn’t look my age. Now after reading the reviews I would look forward to a consultation at AHS
Consultant at AHS recomended me laser and surgery treatments.I am taking their laser treatment since last seven months and have noticed that geting my hair denced and thick. At the end of the tharapy that is after ten months iI am planning to go for surgery also.I would like to thank my frind to show me the right way.

Problem date: 1/13/2012 Problem:Called AHS at 6pm to have emergency service provided on furnace. Was instructed to call back later. Called AHS at 9pm. I was instructed they were unable to locate a technician, and I should call in the morning. Called AHS at 7am, they told me to call back at 10, as they still had yet to find someone. Called AHS at 10, and was told they were still unable to find someone to come. I was given the option of calling my own company, and told if I did find someone to call them back. I found a company that would come out. The company informed me they would not call or speak to AHS, as they were not allowed to. I called AHS and noon, and informed them that I had found a company that was willing to come to my aid, but the company would not contact AHS. AHS told me they would not be able to reimburse me for this service, since the agent of my company would not speak to them. AHS was unable provide me either reimbursement for the service, nor provide me with a refund of my insurance premiums. They failed to provide the advertised service, which was to get my heater repaired. They also failed to provide a refund. Terrible company….don’t waste your money..you will never get in touch with anyone that will do anything other than the canned ‘I’m sorry…I feel bad…I understand” They should be closed down forever!!!
