National Home Protection Sued by NY AG
New York Attorney General has sued National Home Protection home warranty company and its principals over an alleged warranty scheme that defrauded consumers in New York and other states out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The AG froze all of National Home Protection’s assets, so customers who got ripped off, can hopefully at least get back some money.
The company has been shut down for the time being and banned from selling again in New York until their problems are settled and they register with the State Insurance Department. If you signed up for a home warranty through National Home Protection, file a complaint with the Attorney General’s office.
The New York attorney general says a New York City-based home warranty company cheated customers in at least 32 states out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Their home warranty plans promise to repair or replace household appliances and systems if they break. Pending court action, the company can’t sell any more out of New York.
Consumers with complaints against National Home Protection are urged to contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Frauds hotline at 800-771-7755. New York consumers may also contact their local regional office. Contact information about the Attorney General’s regional offices can be found online at www.oag.state.ny.us.

I had prepaid a year of service with Natl Home Protection…now I can’t reach them for service. Does anyone know who I can report this to or how to get in touch with this company? They should be required to give refunds or at least notify their policy holders ..I am out over $350.00 and my policy doesn’t expire until December 09.
I am in Ca. I prepaid for 3 years. I had one claim they failed to pay claim. Their number has been disconnected. I too am out several hundred dollars. The have a class suit for failure to reimburse the appropriate amount for structural damage repairs. The suit is being settled out of court. They also offered a $150 gift certificate if I purchased a three year premium. Right now it looks like I gave them over $900 for nothing.
Same here.. I used this company for 4 polices and have been trying to get anybody on the line… do you guys have any info on home to contact someone of be apart of the law sue
We also prepaid for 3 years; no service, can’t get in touch with them…nothing! Does anyone have any info on how we go about getting our money back? Thanks!
I had at least two claims which they denied for “improper maintenence”, similar to above comments. I complained to them that they always find an excuse to not pay for service. Also, when I renewed my contract in Februay, 2009, I was promised 2 free visits and a $50 Home Depot gift certificate. Now I need service and the phones are disconnected.
I was going month to month with this company and just found out yesterday that they were not authorized to do business in the state of Texas. I have filed a complaint. I am hoping to get my money back.
I have had NHW for 2 1/2 years. They have been taking the money out of my bank account and last paynebt out was June18,2009. My a/c went out and I tried to contact them and number has been disconnected. I have had problems before with them but kept policy because of my a/c unit and I might need them sometime. If I had not called I would have not know that the A.G. office has closed them down. I had to get a new a/c unit and have been out over $5,000.00 and I dont know how long they have been taking out payment while they were closed and where were the payment going to. I have filed fraud charges at my bank and filing fraud charges thru NY Attorney General and also in Texas. I also was promised a $50.00 Home Depot gift certifcate which I never got and tried to get my ceiling fane fixed and the repair man said used the wrong type of lights bulbs, I have been using fan ligh bulbs for 20 years and never a problem, so I was out $50.00 plus on my other problems. I am going to try and get my money back plus money they took out of my account .
NHP is a terrible company to deal with. They found odd excuses to deny my claim for pool equipment. When I read their policy language to them and told them that it clearly did not support their reason for denying the claim, the rep got angry and yelled at me. I filed complaints with the AG’s office, FBI for internet fraud, Insurance commissioner and BBB both in New York and my home state. I urge everyone with a complaint to do the same.
Is this the same co as Nationwide Home Warranty? I belive I have been scamed by them. I purchased a HOW several months ago and never received any info, recept, book etc. that I have received in the past. I just tried to call the service number and the recording will not go to the extensions just repeating, anyone have info on this company?
I have been scam lost almost $1400. for 3 polices.Have been unable to contact NHP.To report a claim. Can you help me ?
I was contacted by NHP warranty to provide service for HVAC. I did some work but was never paid. The NY attorney generals office is suing them and has since shut them done and seized their assets. You should file a complaint with their office to try and recoup your money. If anyone is looking for a reputible home warranty try American Home Sheild or HSA they are very reputible.
For those of you who had NHP please be sure to file a complaint with the Attorney General’s office in NY. Their website is posted above. They are currently investigating NHP and are hoping to file a suit but they need more people. Tell anyone you know who had them. It is more than likely everyone’s best chance in recovering any monies paid to them. You can file any and all your claims with the them on one form and fax it to them. I hope this helps.
This company tries to get the contractor to admit equipment has not been maintained. They ask several questions until they get the answer that the problem is customers…then they say they will not pay the claim. They are scamming people. Do not sign a contract with National Home Warranty….they do not pay their claims if over $100.
I took out a contract eff. May, 2007 and was also told I would receive $150 in Home Depot rebates. I was first told they did not receive the coupon info, so I sent in their required resubmission form. I was told repeatedly that the form was being processed. Then I started being told that the rebates had been sent(5 times in all). When I asked to speak with a supervisor, I was always told he was not available and would call me back. I wrote letters and called 23 times and NEVER received a call or letter in return. The NY BBB has informed me this week that they are closing my complaint as it cannot be pursued. Thankfully I have not had a claim, but now know that the company is fraudulent.
My co did service for NHW in Lou, KY they shut down oweing me around 1000.00 worth of service work has this co opened in another name like nationwide home warr allso in new york please email me if you have that info allbrandappliance@insightbb.com
Thanks
I did find a phone number I dont know if this will help anyone 1-800-514-6472 or 7-800-514-6742 i called today they said they had no record of me buying my contract
I signed up for 3 years of service last July. I never got the 3 Home Depot gift cards and I got the contract 2 weeks after my trial period expired. I was told that I had a 30 day trial period but when I got the “appropriate” contract, it said I had a 3 day trial period. I requested to speak to a supervisor 10-15 times but never got a call back and I never got a response to my written complaints either. I should have renewed with the home warranty company I had at that time. They hung up on me numerous times when I called too.
Discover card could not do anything to protect me from NHP. I filed a claim with BBB and NHP did not respond to BBB so they had to close the file. I am relieved to see that NHP is shut down. I paid $989.56 for 3 yrs of coverage. This was an eye opener for me, I’ve never been scammed before and felt really stupid that I let my guard down with National Home Protection.
I need to know how to file a claim I have aleast 6mos of their service that I paid for, now I need repairs “NO SERVICE” WOW………There is a God that watches everyone and everything.
Sounds as though I was the biggest fool of all. This company got a five year prepaid policy from me for a little over $2,000. I also never received the $250 Home Depot shopping card I was promised. The NY and AZ AG’s offices were over absolutely no help to me. Nor was the NY or AZ Departments of Insurance helpful in the least. Lastly, as far as those TV news consumer advocates, that was an exercise in futility as well.
i have similar issue with this company. they are no longer exits looks like. my warranty is still on i have paid them full and also they promised me 50 doller gift card over the phone that never happened i send them copy of my contract twice but nothing work. also i had a microwave issue they said they don’t cover this part and they said you have two microwave so this one is not covered but other one is so we not responsible for this one to repair. i am very unhappy with there service.
I took out a contract National Home Protection on May 26, 2007 and was also told I would receive $250 in Home Depot rebates. But I never received the coupons, so I sent in their required resubmission form. I was told repeatedly that the form was being processed. My a/c went out and I tried to contact them, but never provide service
I had paid them for one year. I also own the plumber whio did some work on my home after he told me that he is now the member of the NHP and now he is suing me for not payment can some one help me on that?
I ordered 3 years of service by the phone last May. I never got the contract. I never signed up the contract. I never agreed to term and conditions. I was told that I had a 30 day trial. I tried to cancel it in 30 days and I requested to speak to a supervisor 10-15 times but never got a call back. I made a dispute via Cicard. NHP provided citicard with a fake documents that I pressed “I agree to the Terms and conditions.” But I bought it by the phone. Citicard could not do anything to protect me from NHP. I am relieved to see that NHP is shut down. I paid $989.56 for 3 yrs of coverage. This was an eye opener for me, I’ve never been scammed before and felt really stupid that I let my guard down with National Home Protection.
I purchased 3 year plan in Sept 2008. They have delivered services. I paid them $978.00. I never received $150 gift card from home depot or lowes. I spent almost $1000, for a service I never received and now I have to spend additional $500 or so to purchase a reliable home warranty insurance. Their phones are disconnected and I can’t get my money back
I had NHP for about a year (barely used it) then renewed the policy in Sept. 2009 for additional 5 year coverage (cost about $2,000). After that I did not need any service at all until about a week ago-my water heater broke down, and found out that NHP was gone. I just called the NY AG office number listed above and was told their case against NHP has been closed because the money is all gone. I was advised to contact a private lawyer and to sue NHP on my own. I have found at internet that the Balestriere Lanza law firm filled a class action law suit against NHP. Their contact number is 212-374-5400.
My contract just expired with them and I was wondering why I had not received a call, attempting to re-new. Guess I know now. I too didnt receive the Home Depot gift card after several attempts. I am lucky that I didnt have a claim during the contract period. I hope their officers end up behind bars. Does the NY Atty Gen post the names of the company principals anywhere?
I see I’m not alone I took down the numbers listed in posting in hopes of getting money back. It’s a shame how they have taken advantage of many of us in these economc times and have no remorse how do the owner and workers sleep at night?
As soon as I findout about scam of this company, I called my creditcard company and dispute charges. This was 6 months ago and I am still pending for refund. I was issued temp credit by credit card. I am hoping to receive my money. I call for service in February 2009 there was no one to take my call and phone line is no longer in service. I am ripped by this people. This type of companies bringing this country into third world country level where people can’t trust each other.
This type of people are American enemies.
God Bless America.
I am one of the customers who fell for this as well. I am insulted by this lawsuit filed by the NEW YORK ATTORNEY GEN because i PAID THIS COMPANY $2200 AND WHEN THE suit was won my Cuomo, I only got $24. Are they kidding me? Did the attorney’s office get all the money and I was slapped with this amount?
