Offers plans to cover pre-existing conditions and lack of maintenance repairs, for an additional fee.
| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

We have had AHS for the last 5 years. During that time they have replaced 2 toilets, fixed the washer and dryer. In the beginning they were good (thought the second toilet they fixed they said it didn’t include a seat). Things started getting bad when they had to replace my oven since it could not be fixed. The replacement took over 5 months and even then I had to install it myself since the person they sent to install it wasn’t up to doing the job. However every time I call now they just deny the claim. My last problem I had a stoppage in the sink. The plumber came said it had to be cleared (snaked) from the roof and that was not covered. I got another plumber who fixed the problem from inside the house. Yet I still had to pay AHS the $60 service call for NOT fixing the problem. I am canceling my contract and finding someone else. It is no surprise that they have a class suite against them. Stay away.

It’s not even so much the customer service of the company, but the people that work for the company. They definitely are on their contractor’s side and not ours. We are the ones that are keeping them in business, without us there would be no need to have contracting companies. AHS really needs to understand who their real customers are. I have several contracts with them for my rental properties and they don’t seem to value me at all. Therefore, I’m canceling my contracts just like others have. Any suggestions, on which company is the BEST for the Atlanta area?
Had electrical and plunbing problems. Plumber never showed up!!! Electrical company refused to check the outside receptical. Said it was the lawn sprinkler system because the timer was plugged into it even though the receptical is in the patio, controled by a swith inside the house. Originally it was used for a radio / T.V. when outside on the patio. Now I have a celling fan that’s bad and this worthless contractor STATES: ” WE DON’T FIX CELLING FAN’S”. Excuse me, but it’s that listed as a covered ITEM……. Calling the IDIOTS at AHS got similar BRAIN DEAD comments like “IT’S UP TO THE CONTRACTOR WHAT WORK THEY WANT TO DO” Oh joy, they get to pick and choose the job and we get SCREWED.
This company is a complete rip off. They are timely when it comes to their monthly fee debited from my checking account but when it comes to providing the service that they are required to do, they make all excuses why they can’t. My hot water heater is leaking and I had to have all of the water to my home shut off, and these LIARS keep saying they have no one that can service my emergency call. I am too through with them.
The AC coil needs to be replaced but they will not replace the condenser because it is working. 84 degrees inside temperature is not considered working by me. The new coil will not match the outside 21 year old condensing unit with an 8 seer. I also have to pay disposal fees and upgrade fees totaling $1191.00. AHS will only pay $440 towards a new system. I have gone around and around with this company for 3 years regarding this matter.
Avoid this company at all costs!!! Sorry…our first 5 years with the company we were pretty happy with AHS…Unfortunately, however, their service has slipped and customer service’s loyalty is to their service companies NOT THEIR OWN CLIENTS!!! We have been waiting OVER a week and a half to get our washer fixed and there is still NO END IN SIGHT. We were assigned a Sears technician and we still, after a week, have no idea when we will receive the parts and AHS will do nothing. They insist that we must wait up to 11 business days to allow Sears the “opportunity” to try and find the parts and THEN, if they don’t find them, they might give us other options….At this point, we are looking for other Home Warranty companies!
They are non-responsive to urgency. Takes a week or so to get whatever fixed.
AHS…By the way I just canceled my policy 10 mins ago i forgot to mention…
AHS… Don’t even waste your time people… I am said to admit that I gave AHS a second go-around after I recieved about 5-6 denials back in 2006. I had to do the repairs out of pocket which cost me thousands and I’m still paying on them… After hearing about a Class Action suit filed against them for denials of other clients of theirs I figured they will probably have their act straight by now, so I gave them another try and renewed my policy again. Low and behold I was denied once again for a leak that is INSIDE the wall of my masterbath shower. The plumber that was sent didn’t even open the wall up to see it for himself even after I offered to open it up for him myself because I can do my own patch work. I got a call two hours later from AHS saying he didn’t see a leak. I was like maybe if he had X-Ray vision he would have seen it… Sad! Check out the “Fault vs American Homeshield” Class-action suit online for details. Google it!
I just canceled mine today. I have had more trouble with AHS I can’t even explain it all. I had two Heating and Air Companies tell me they would not do service with them because they do not pay. Drop them, run and never look back you will be better off telling your kids you got a problem at least you want be wasting money while you do it. They are not worth it. Check them out on the Better Business Bureau website.
We just signed up for AHS and within 2 weeks our ac stopped working. I called late afternoon on sat. and the repair guy was out here monday. He was even early. My air works fine and there was no issue. I am happy with my purchase of AHS.
We have had an AHS policy for the past 8 years and it’s been more trouble than it’s worth. They have been difficult to work with and they raise your rates every year, too. They are ALWAYS going to take the cheapest way out, even if you (the customer) are not satisfied. It would be better to take $40-$50 a month and put it in a savings account to have for an emergency repair, rather than deal with these jokers. At least that way YOU would get to make the decision when it comes to repair or replace. Take it from someone who wasted money and knows…ME!!!
This company stinks. I have had 3 claims with thier service and 1 item they didnt cover for a plumbing drain leak. They said they dont cover a pumbing pipe that freezes and breaks. How can a Drain pipe freeze and break? ITS A DRAIN, there is no standing water in there to freeze. So it was bogus, I asked them to send a different plumber to evaluate for a second opinion. Waiting on them to contact me. On another issue, the hot water heater went out, they dispatched a technician and then told me it would cost me an additional $500 to replace the water heater. I hired a private contractor and had a new water heater installed and the price and labor was less than what hey said I needed to pay out of my own pocket. So what was the point of having them if they were charging $500 above my trade fee. What a crock, I wouldnt recommend this company to anyone!
In the 7 years I have had them I have called them for the garage door, fridge twice, microwave, dishwasher, and toilets flooding. They assisting in paying for the failing toilets which was like gap insurance for what the home insurance people did not pay! And I was not canceled. I like them. I thought of leaving because I need my second freezer in the garage covered. Instead first I will give them a telephone call. Maybe it depends on the area where you live, but I like them.
AHS does not protect anyone, they are out for themselves. They have crooked contractors that are un truthful and they will scam you. AHS as our warranty protector should do something about it and they never did. Do not trust this company.
Promissed to show up at a repair site and never showed up
We have called on numerous occasions about our heat pump. We have had several “fixes” in the last 5 years culmanating in calling during the last bad cold snap this past jan. We were on emergency heat for a week thinkin g the people AHS sent out had ordered the needed part. They didnt. We ended up frying the emerg heat, and had to get another tech to come and do the work on our own. AHS said that even thought the original person did not do the work, they couldnt give the work to someone else because it wasnt company policy. I would HIGHLY recommend that if you have these people as your warrenty people, get rid of them as soon as you can!!
sent out a plumber to change a leaking water heater and he wanted 625.00 more to replace it….wanted 130.00 for an E Q strap W.T.H. stay away from Rite-Away services located in Riverside Ca. what a rip off
their contractors suck looking to patch things up instead of actual repairing the item. stay away from peoples plumbing and stillwell plumbing. they are crooks use mighty puddy for leeks they do anything to screw the company and homeowners. ahs should review their contractors and get rid of the crooks. their plumbers suck.
[...] companies that offer such appliance protection plans including First American, Old Republic, American Home Shield etc. You should check their reputation and choose the one that has a good history of handling [...]
The company hires contractors who are sleezy and try to scam you every time. These contractors lie, are not professional and mostly out there to rip you off. An important note, here in NY the yearly premium is over $600 and each service call is $95. Stay away!!
They will not pay claims and will send out vendors to tell you that there is nothing wrong or it is your fault. A waste of money. In the last year I had five claims and they fixed nothing! If I had saved the $600.00 premium plus the $300.00 in service call fees I could have fixed the problems.
These people are ripoff artists. Do not use them under any circumstanstances. They will void and deny coverage with all kinds of excuses. As soon as my contract ends, I am dumping these people.
Have two heat pumps in 3 level home. Both stopped working in December in mountains. One was due to bad breaker. My husband fixed it as it would be two weeks to get it fixed, and repairman wouldn’t check it out until breaker was fixed. Replaced a switch on other heat pump. Before anything would be done, repairman discovered there had not been any filters put on furnace by contractor. So, he would not work on it until the coils on both were blown out. Cost us almost $1400 plus $60 fee. Within three months of fixing it, downstairs heat pump broke again. HAd been rattling and vibrating loudly for two weeks, then broke. Said it was bad thermostat. Brought one out to replace, then said it was transformer. Put new transformer on, but said it wasn’t right one. Is to bring another one out. Before he left said it was a wire to thermostat that was touching a copper pipe that caused it to short out and burn out transformer and thermostat. Nothing from first visit was covered and had to pay another service fee of $60. He wants $800 to run new wire. AHS refused to pay as said it was faulty workmanship. House is 10 years old. None of this happened until now??? All work was inspected by State Inspector, yet AHS says it was faulty workmanship and won’t pay. Husband will wrap wire to keep off copper pipe and save $800. HEAt pump still rattles and vibrates. We have dropped this service on other two homes, and are looking for another company for this house. Seems like this is the way the contractors operate…find something that isn’t covered to get more $$$. OUrs would have amounted to $2200. IS there a protection for us consumers against this????
