Offers plans to cover pre-existing conditions and lack of maintenance repairs, for an additional fee.
| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

AHS and the contractors they use are terrible. We have had the policy for 3 years and they have been out 5 times to fix our A/C. They contractors they use do not have a clue what they are doing and one even told me they are told by AHS to do $60 worth or repairs (the cost of the contractor visit). The contractor that came out in July 08 to replace the coils BROKE the internal drip pan which eventually began leaking last month. AHS did agree to refund the July 09 $60 copay but I will not be renewing this policy and WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND AHS TO ANYONE!
This is AHS at it’s best in North Carolina. I’m having the same issue and they still can not resolve the problem.
A Triangle woman, who has been without a working air conditioner for more than a month and a half, says she is fed up.
Alexine Miller says she wants answers, as she has a home warranty that she thought would protect her, but instead she says she’s getting nothing but hot air.
“You can see I’m perspiring, water is falling off of me,” Miller said. “I lost a little weight. The heat killed my plants.”
Her plants wilted and her poor dog has been panting for weeks. Miller’s air conditioning went out the end of May and she says she called her home warranty company, American Home Shield, right away.
“Within 48 hours someone came out and fixed it,” Miller said. “Two weeks later, it was broken again and the same company came out again and said they couldn’t work on this system because it’s not made any more and the parts are hard to get.”
Miller says American Home Shield sent another HVAC company out and she says they told her they could get the part, but that was on June 16 –six weeks later Miller still has no fix.
“This is the hottest summer on record and I think I have been patient,” Miller said.
American Home Shield did tell Miller they would reimburse her up to $100 for a window air conditioning, which is in her bedroom and it has been giving her relief at night, but it doesn’t cool her whole house.
“You have to give them time to find the parts and I was trying to be fair, but they have not been fair to me,” Miller said. “I’ve been miserable and I think it’s time this comes to an end and they should replace my system.”
ABC11 Eyewitness News I-Team Troubleshooter Diane Wilson got in touch with American Home Shield and after looking into it, a representative said since the part is still on back order through the manufacturer; American Home Shield has decided to replace the entire air handling unit in order to expedite a resolution.
On Monday, the unit was installed and after a month and a half of no air, Miller says she is finally getting cooled off.
The rep with American Home Shield also said they sincerely regret the delays Miller has experienced and this is not a typical experience.
Due to the delays, the rep added, American Home Shield did agree to pay for the additional charges related to the installation that would not be typically covered under the warranty.
I purchased this Home Warranty when I purchased my new home. I should have saved my money. I have had no Air Conditioning for the upstairs of my house since April. I have spoke with the personnel and they have sent out two different companies who can not fix the unit. This company along with the companies they have sent out to repair this unit only care about the money they receive and not the customer. The technicians as they call there self are clueless on how to fix the system. They need to use more reputal companies not the ones who are fly by night businesses.
Purchase our home 8 months ago with this warranty. What a joke! After numerous $60 service fees on top of the original cost of the warranty, we have received zero in compensation for a/c repair and duct work problems. Both were ‘covered’. I’m investigating class action lawsuits against this company and talking to our lawyer. This company needs to be stopped!
We bought our 1000 sq ft home in April. We purchased a warranty with American Home Shield. The air conditioning failed in June and the nice fellow from Fuse came through and fixed it immeidately, within a few days… The air conditioner failed in the 3rd week of July and we are still without air conditioning. It has been in the high 90′s and low 100′s… My work has gone to working nights to avoid the heat, so I’m having to try and sleep during the day with no air con. The service guys came out from Fuse and they immediately diagnosed a failed compressor. They indicated that the company would probably want to cash out rather than pay to have the unit fixed. He suggested an upgrade to better, more efficient heat pump and air con. That was okay. I finally got a voicemail back from American Home Shield and they said we had some options to discuss. I called them and the “option” was to give me $900 and not fix the unit. They indicated that it was undersized for the house. I told them that a 1000 sq ft house is well-supported by a 2.5 ton unit. They said that they would give me to the Authorization Department and the direct number if the call fails. I stayed on hold for 20 minutes, 2 x’s. I called the direct number and was on hold for 10 minutes and I gave up… It sounds like I may be experiencing the beginning of a similar experience of many of the other people that have written in. I need my air conditioning fixed now. I will return with updates to this situation. Thanks,
Cancelled this “warranty” over 2 weeks ago and still waiting to receive a refund. I had 3 service calls and NONE of the items were truly covered (despite literature implying same). Also, paid extra for the deluxe plan. What a mistake! It takes 15 – 20 minutes to even speak to a person – then you get transferred or accidentally disconnected. What a ripoff!
I called the company up for electrical problems, They sent out a person that identified himself as a diagnostician, not an electrician. I told him that their is a short circuit in the wiring,k the panel box had two malfunctioning breakers with the bus bars arching. Also all of the appliances were an overload on one circuit causing the breakers to pop. I contacted another electrician after calling AHS of my concerns, they said OK, send us the bill. After getting a qualified electrician in, it was found that the cloth covered wiring was defective and had to be replaced. Also the panel box was defective and required to be replaced. Their was also 6 items that were not up to code that were involved. I made a claim for reimbursement of $1825.00 for the work that was completed. They denied the claim and offered $250.00 for code violations. The wiring and panel box were replaced because of defects, the upgrade was a by-product of the work. All of the work was approved by the city becuse of the replacement requirements of the city. Had these items been functioning properly, their would not be a need to repair them. AHS cannot distinguish between repair and upgrade. We are filing with small claims court for the money. At the end of the warranty, we will cancel. All this company wants to do is collect the premiums and stall for any payment. To put up roadblocks to frustrate you more. One of the worse companies around.NEVER DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY.

They replaced with my air conditioner but I had to pay $1500!!! Upfront before the work was even started. The unit they replaced it with, was way below goverment standards for effciency. This model was the least efficient model!!! This model is costing me more money to run!!!
We made a claim regarding our AC unit. Tech came out after 2 days of waiting, only to collect their $60 and have AHS tell me they would NOT COVER my unit! I sat on hold for over 40 minutes in hopes of speaking with a supervisor. At which time Carlyn (so she said), was quite rude and very short with her responses to me. This company needs to be sewed and sewed again! I’m willing to join in with a class action law suit. Anyone else interested? I’m easily found, just google my name and contact me. I have contacted a lawyer! I for one want my air-conditioner fixed or my $512 back I spent with AHS on the so called “policy” they sold me. Let’s get this Class Action Law Suit started!!
My wife and I have had a contract with this company since we bought our home in 2008 (at our Realtor’s suggestion). We’ve made 4 service requests since signing up. (repaired leaking toilets, a broken shut-off valve, electrical repairs for our dryer, and a mal-functioning fridge) Eash of our requests had its own issues, mostly scheduling conflicts. But each of the service techs was professional and completed the repairs in a timely manner.
Reading a lot of these reviews, it appears that many people are upset about the service techs or the service company, and not necessarily AHS. But, obviously, there are several having trouble with the AHS reps.
All I can say is that when I’ve had to call in a request, they’ve always given me service techs that knew what they were doing, and I’ve never been strung along (knocking on wood).
So far, I’m pleased with the service.
I have had the same AC experience since purchasing my home two months ago in NW DC. Has anyone been told they can appeal a denial that was manufactured by some fly by night Waldorf Water and Gas for why the unit’s issue isn’t covered, only to never to be able to reach the Authorizations people? I have the max coverage and have caught them in this scam. That is what this is It is not just breach of warranty but fraud. In all sincerity, I am an attorney and it will cost me nothing to file. I want nothing more than for my contract to be honored. We cannot let this company get away with this. Stay tuned.
My air conditioning went out about 3 weeks ago. With many calls and complaints they still have not replaced the coil (still searching for the part) and refuse to replace the unit even though they have been unable to find the part. Like many others have mentioned, there was record heat and the company did not care or try to espedite. They have offered a cash out for the part, but what sense would that make if the part can’t be found. I want them to do what they have contracted. Fix the ac or replace the unit.
Shame on AHS!!! We had a/c service to repair the compressor. The technician insisted we pay a large disposal fee or he would not finish the work he already started, thus rendering our family with no a/c in the fl. summer. AHS said they would reimburse us since they do not have that fee in our contract and no one informed us before the work was started. the tech also asked for a tip and when we notified ahs they just laughed. After many calls to AHS they no longer know what we are talking about and refuse to reimburse us. They also oddly no longer have the phone conversations or notes from our multiple calls. AHS we are not giving up and we want our money back!!! Thieves!!!!

There is no way this Company can hace a A+ rating with the BBB. They are worthless and lying b*%&#rds and have no honesty in their word or duties that are written into the agreement. A class action suit needs to be taken against this company.
Lawyers! take notice! here is a cash cow for you!
Today is the 14th day I’ve been without my refridgerator. I’m now getting the run around because a part for my 7 year old Samsung Refridgerator is not available. I’ve told AHS and the contractor (Greenway) that the part is available at Sears. They refuse to get the part from Sears even though the delay now is a part search. They also refuse to switch the contractor to Sears. They say they have 14 days to find the part. I can’t find this in my contract. That means it will be a month before I will have a refridgerator from the time it went out. This is not what I’m paying them for. I have been with AHS for several years and have had a few good service requests. I’ll be canselling as soon as the repair/replacement is done. I do have experience with another company and I will be going back to them.
The repair tech that came out to fix the AC yesterday, told us that AHS will NEVER replace the unit. They will continue to fix it. No matter how bad it gets, they will just continue to send someone out to fix it. Obviously on Friday we had a 12 hour window, laughable, and when he didn’t show up, we needed to reschedule to another day when we had yet another 12 hour window. We are thinking about a class action lawsuit against this company.
I arrived at my rental property July 28 and discovered that the AC was broken. I placed my service request later that night when I finally had time (online at the AHS website at 11pm July 28). That part was a cinch! A local service company contacted me the next morning (July 29) at 8am to schedule an appointment. By 3pm that same day, the AC was up and running again. Yes, it was hot, and yes, I was sweating it up in the rental house the whole time because I was working on final repairs before my new tenants move in. I was thrilled to see such a speedy response all the way around. This is my first month with a home warranty company. They didn’t discriminate at all (despite my service call already costing more than I have paid into my warranty). The company they chose was competent, courteous, and CONSCIENTIOUS. I am happy with my choice. I know other responses on here for AC repair aren’t as favorable as mine. Hopefully, this review helps. Just a side note: if there had been a 30-day waiting period for my warranty to kick in (as with so many of the other companies), this repair job would have been on ME! Thank you, AHS, for having a better policy. Paid = covered NOW.
We’ve been with AHS for over 10 years and had mostly good experiences. The most recent was with our AC unit, the tech came within the window of the appointment, found the 2 problems (fan motor and thermostat) fixed one right away and the other within a week. When I call in the service reps are always nice, and the service people sent out are also knowledgeable and courteous. Their rates have gone up a lot, a downside, makes me want to try another company.

i’ve been with American Home Shield for 11 years. 8 yrs @ my first in dundalk, MD and 3 years @ our single family home in Middle River. i’ve had my heat pump (self contained) serviced 9 times. 5 different companies. we had one company come out here to service our heat pump. He took one look @ it and said that there’s no way he was gonna touch that. this past sunday, it went up again. 100+ degrees. i called 10am, noon, 3pm and that’s when i got an employee @ AHS who told me i had a 2 hr. window to wait and then i could call someone outside of the ahs company that is licensed and certified to look at it. A local company, Air Tech came over and within 5 minutes, knew that the compressor and the coils went bad. the coils would take 4-5 weeks to come in. i call, air tech calls AHS, basically after 12 different operators and 4 day with no ac (never the same one twice) and repeating myself over and over, they told me to wait for the part when i wanted to just replace the damn thing. my warranty is up in sept. and you can bet i won’t be wasting anymore of my money with them. they are giving me $2490. towards the cost. that would be the amount to fix it. after all the repairs, i almost had them convinced to replace this but they wanted to replace junk with junk. in 11 yr. i averaged $7300. that i paid them for their warranty service. if i woulda’ saved that and went without a warranty company, i have my new heat pump and $2000.
we have had this warrenty since 1995 we have made several claims in the beginning their claims response was good not great but good over the years the people in customer service have become downright rude and mean. We have had to cash out (a joke) on 2 washers and a diswasher, furnace and now maybe an oven (they think that 6-8 weeks without an oven is reasonable) the control panel is bad and it must be rebuilt, the oven we have cost us 1500 in 95 and they are only going to give me 382 against a new one that costs between 900 to 1300 for it to be comparable to the one we have. They haven’t called the tech to come back out and remove the control paenl yet I called them to inquire about it and she said that this was the first she had heard about it. Normally they send out incompetent people to repair our appliances the ones we have now we have requested them the last 3 calls and they seem good. I am a small business owner and using a small business is good but you do pay for what you get and you should remember the good ones.I cannot afford to not keep the service because of the enonomy it is easier to pay monthly and what we have paid this year is less than what they are going to give us. They truely are a pain and the service company that we are using through them told me that out of all the warranty companies that they have ahs is the best (scary thought huh). They set time lines and they don’t adhere to them at all and then give you major attitude when you call them on it. They must hire people that have worked in collection agencies because none of them have a heart or any moral standing.I know it isnt an easy job but don’t take it out on the consumer who is contributing to their salaries.
I have never experienced as poor of service as I received from AHS. The AC coil needed replacement and the repair company they sent order a replacement that they told me would take 5-7 days to receive. When I explained that being without air in Orlando in July when the temperatures are 100 degrees and that an eight month old infant lived in the home they told me my request was urgent. I contacted AHS numerous times, could never speak tp the same individual twice and was always tols how sorry they were about my situation. The initial service request required a wait window of 7 hours and the final repair required a wait window of 5 hours. Neither of these windows were met so we waited over 12 hours for which I received no apology or explanation. This company is a joke and the AC repair company, Burleson, is even worse. Beware of AHS.
I know this isn’t about air conditioners, but I had to call about a plumbing problem, this a.m. Within in 2 hours a plumber was here and it was fixed! I hope if I have air conditioning problems, it’s a pleasant experience as this was!
