Offers plans to cover pre-existing conditions and lack of maintenance repairs, for an additional fee.
| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

it is hit and miss with the service people, some very good, some just there to pick up the $60 copayment. they seem to look more at how to make the insurance not pay for a repair.
what the heck is going on with this company? first time, they referred us to another company and they never called back (1 week ) then they got a guy to finally come out.. now he has to order a part an they have to approve it 1-2 week wait?
are they going under?
Same song as everybody else on here…
Only got the home warranty because it came with our home purchase – will never get another, especially with AHS. 1 month in, our HVAC unit dies – takes two days for the local contractor to come out. Says the blower motor is dead, has to order it from another city. AHS will not replace the entire furnace, which would be much faster but a few hundred dollars more expensive (like everybody on here says: no replacements, only repairs with the cheapest parts). This despite my repeated calls/pleas to both AHS and the local contractor that the weather in South Texas has been > 90° all week.
I have yet to receive a call from AHS or the contractor on the status – I have initiated all contact and nobody seems to know or want to share anything (other than “I’m sorry sir, I understand your frustrations…”). Why should the customer be forced to play middleman for AHS and the local contractors?
Bottom dollar contractors, bottom dollar repairs, bottom dollar warranty company.
An AHS policy was provided to me upon the purchase of an older condo the end of last year. Because the refrigerator (a high-end undercounter unit) already had an “irregularity”, added coverage was put on the policy. Within a month, the fridge had a major thermostat problem. It took a couple of days to get someone out, not a big deal — at first! They couldn’t find the serial number and had to order a generic brand, which required a few more calls to them to spur them on to fix that problem (it didn’t fit the unit property). The new thermostat was finally installed, and within days, it wasn’t working either. To make a long story short, this went on two more times. Finally, a “smart” repairman noticed that the wiring had been crossed — and there were TWO thermostats within this small 5.5 cu. ft. fridge. So the wires were uncrossed, the unit taken apart, including the ice maker, and of course parts had to be ordered and another visit to install them. But now the ice maker wasn’t working. I had coverage for ANY item on this refrigerator that didn’t work. By this time, the original company refused to come out again, and I had to start over with a new company — and a whole new series of repairmen. I definitely was covered, but no one wanted to touch this unit! Sears was the last service company used and they stood me up 2 times with repair dates. On top of this, the HVAC in the condo was leaking like a sieve and had to be repaired. That took a couple of visits to get some tape wrapped around a pipe. I’m still holding my breath on that repair. The refrigerator situation was becoming exasperating — timeframe: 1st call in January — last call in August!!! Still no working fridge. I finally decided to purchase a “temporary” unit, not nearly the same size or capacity as the initial one — which originally cost around $1700. All I wanted was something that fit the space I had. I found a small “dorm” fridge that would at least let me keep a few ice cubes frozen and some milk cold. It cost me $162. After arguing with them for weeks, I was finally put in touch with their “Purchasing Dept.” who agreed the only resolution was to replace the unit. What did they offer? A 6-foot tall 20-inch wide unit that wasn’t even close to the size needed. NOT THEIR CONCERN! It was approximately the same cu. ft. and that’s all they cared about. After numerous calls, one of their “smarter” agents agreed that there is one and only ONE unit that could be purchased as a replacement. I agreed, even though it didn’t have the features I wanted. I had to sign a release saying that I would forego the ice maker feature just to get the unit as soon as possible. I also asked to be reimbursed for the “temporary” unit I purchased. They offered only $125 as that’s what they do for “rental” units. There is still no end to this sad story, as the new agreed-upon refrigerator is now back-ordered for at least another 2 months!! I have been sent policy renewal information by e-mail and regular mail — with a more than $100 increase in premium for the following reason . . . 11 service calls in less than one year!! Gee, I wonder how that happened??? This “company” is a huge pain in the backside — and I’ll be lucky to get this new fridge by the end of the year!! They don’t even know when they’re being scammed by their own service technicians!!
This company has no sense or urgency. My AC went out in the middle of summer in Texas and when I called to report it they said they would send out someone to check it out in 5 days! When I mentioned I could not go without AC in 110-degree weather, the rep was quick to correct me saying she had checked the local weather and it was 105 degrees not 110 and that it did not classify as an emergency so I had no option but to wait the 5 days.
A couple of months later, my dishwasher was leaking. It took 3 days for an “evaluating visit” (only because I demanded to be assigned a separate company after the first one they assigned would take 13 days to visit for an evaluation) and 12 days later it hasn’t been fixed yet…still waiting for a part.
I find it ironic that they base their “turnaround time” on how quick they assign your request to a vendor. However, they don’t check when that vendor’s next availability is or when they complete the service.
I would not recommend this company to anyone.
I live in Austin, Tx, where we have projected temperatures of 97 degrees for the next three days. My AC broke, and when I reported it I asked how it would take to fix it, and was told it could take up to three days because it wasn’t an emergency. I asked if emergencies were defined in the contract and was told they weren’t. I asked what constituted an emergency.
1. Temperatures over 104 degrees, every day for 3 days.
2. Temperatures below 40 degrees, every day for 3 days.
3. A water leak requiring that the water for the house be turned off. I didn’t ask, but presume they would turn off the water to house on an emergency basis, and then you would have to wait for up to three days for the actual repair.
I also found out when my washer broke that the repairman can take three days to come out, several weeks after that to wait on ordered parts, and three days after that to come back to install them.
I highly recommend AHS for protecting things you really don’t need any time soon.
TERIBBLE EXPERIENCE! Not worth the money at ALL to have a home warranty under American Home Shield. Our evaporator coil went out on our air conditioner and was leaking. It’s middle of summer here right now and about 100 degrees at least with the heat index outside. Right now it’s 88 degrees in my house and the air conditioner has completely stopped working! After calling AHS, they called a ridiculous air conditioning company to come out to our house and give an estimate, and they agreed it was the evaporator coil that was leaking. Mind you, this was after they said they’d show up the day before and I waited over 4 hours for them to get here and left work early. That was over a month ago. Fast forward to today, with no air conditioning and called the company and AHS, both reporting the evaporator coil still won’t be in for at least a week b/c it was on back order! They refused to pay for refrigerant to be put in the air conditioner in the meantime to help keep it cool in here. I would have to pay out of my own pocket per AHS. Well the refrigerant is gone because you didnt replace the leaking evaporator coil in a timely manner! Isn’t that all part of the covered leaking evaporator coil?! Seriously, save yourself the money and trouble and time, just hire someone to fix it right away if it breaks.
Don’t waste your time or money with AHS. I live in Louisiana and it is usually beyond hot 10 months out of 12. I am 5 months pregnant and was having issues with my AC unit cooling. Long story short, I was given a story that due to a lack of maintenance on my part they would not cover my repairs. I informed them that the unit was cleaned annually. I paid for the unit to be cleaned along with a list of other things to do. My private AC guy determined that a leak was the reason it was not cooling. I remitted just the portion of the bill for the repair minus the cleaning and their list. To my surprise, they would not even pay me $250 for the repair and stated it was my fault because it was not clean. CLEANING HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! I PAID THESE PEOPLE FOR 5 YEARS and this is what I received in return RUN…..they are high and not worth it. Go put your money down the DRAIN!
used this company for several years, was pretty good..but recently …becoming a nightmare… horrible…outragous.., ridiculous … they keep u on the line for hrs… they never fix anything right…i am shopping for better company…and i am thinking of calling the better business bureau…that is how frustrated i am…
When our A/C went out, AHS contracted an HVAC company (Citywide) whose rep was not licensed, had a warrant for faulty work/performing unlicensed repairs in South Carolina and Florida and who didn’t even know how to fix the problem. We found this out when we requested another company from AHS to come out and fix the problem that the first company couldn’t.
for all you winney ahs clients, to bad to sad, you get what you pay for, you want better service, better contracters,do you want the job done right, well, be prepared to pay, the warranty company is in buissiness to make money also, you dont work for free, dont expect the contracter to work for free, dont expect theme to pay for your misused and abused appliances, go ahead try another warranty co, good luck, they are in bussiness to make money to. just like you are.
Am Home Shield: avoid at any cost. Save money, sanity, and your health. If these are of not any concern, sure go with them.
Our AC broke, they sent a repair person, who didn’t know what or how to fix it. Two brothers, totally incompetent. They said it was fixed but it was not. We called back within the hour after they left when they said it will “start blowing cold air in 45 minutes”. They came back two days later, replaced the compressor. An hour later it broke again. Called again, they came back 2 days later, replaced something else. Didn’t work. They wanted to come back again after 2 days. All this while we stayed in a local hotel. We finally called a local company who came and fixed in an hour.
AMS refused to send someone competent. Refused to consider other certified repairers. Refused to “authorize’ on time because their “authorization” dept is closed for labor day weekend (we asked Thursday, they responded on Monday).
In short, if your family is not critically dependent on vital appliances, then go with them, but otherwise avoid them. Save your sanity.
Our experience has been the same as all the other posters. When we bought this home in April I said I wanted a home warranty for a year and AHS was the company the seller chose. So at least I didn’t pay for it. A/C broke at the end of August, called AHS, took them 4 days to come out to look at it. They said they didn’t have a part so they came back the next day. A/C worked fine for 3 days then stopped blowing cold air. The company took 2 days to come out and said it wasn’t their work it was now an electrical problem. The AC guy called AHS and set up an emergency call and the company said they would be out immediatly, yeah that was 2 days ago. They still haven’t come out and are now saying it won’t be until tomorrow. I’m sure they won’t have the right part and since they don’t do weekends I’ll be sitting in a hot house in Texas with 3 kids crying for another week. I hate this company, their customer service sucks, they have no sense of urgency or trying to help their customers. The reps on the phone want us to believe they only contract with one electrical company in the DFW area. Are you kidding me? Will be going with Choice Home in the future.
We received this warranty when we bought the house, thankfully, I did not pay for it! We moved to Jax and immediately experienced a record cold with below freezing temps. Our heater decided to kick the bucket while my husband was deployed. I called AHS and they sent a tech out. He pulled out parts and told me it would take up to 7 days to get a replacment. Ok. So I waited and waited. On day 7 with temps inside my house of 40 degrees and two freezing sick kids, I called AHS. They told me the part was on order. I called the company, manager was out. I went back and forth between AHS and the company for 3 WEEKS!! I kept getting the run around. I was crying on the phone from frustration and yelling. They offered me reimbursment for one space heater for my 2300 sq ft house. I went to buy one but every store was sold out. My husband came back and had it out with both companies. Finally they showed up one day and installed the parts. Turns out, the part was sitting in the shop and the tech was out of town. No one followed up, no one cared about us! They are heartless, inconsiderate jackasses. Don’t use them!
This company is a SCAM!! To: AHS please file suit aginst me so that we can bring your Lies, cheating and stealing to light.
Wish I had read the reviews before purchasing AHS. My biggist issue with this company started because of our AC unit. Living in Florida in the summer with almost 100% humidity, this is an item that cannot go unfixed. Our old AC was completly replaced last year. But this year in April it broke and of course this happened over a weekend. AHS will not do business on the weekend so my family lived in a home for 2 days that was almost 100 degrees inside, dangerous! So we paid our $60 deductable and that Monday a company came out and fixed it…3 days later it broke again. They repaired it a 2nd time and thankfully AHS policy garuntees work for 30 days so we did not pay the deductable. But it is now 5 months later and my AC unit is again broke. But because work is only good for 30 days I am paying my $60 deductable again for the same problem I had 5 months ago. They need to garuntee their work for longer than 30 days, especially when it the same applience that brakes multiple times in 6 months.
PPS; I also reported them on http://www.angieslist.com and Camden Plumging

PS; You can report them to BBB on line that’s what I did. well at least it took you only 5 days for a/c it took them more then 30 days to fix my moms last june and it was really hot. and my mom has breast cancer. they said they would pay for the motel stay, but they never sent me the $260. they approved for refund. still waiting.

24 DAYS AND COUNTING!!!!!!!!!! Well, hello everyone; I had home shield for a long time. my mom’s hot water heater broke 8-13-2010 friday. called them, they sent out camden plumbing in st marys ga. paid them $60.00 for the repair to fix it. well, they didn’t. had to come back monday to order a new unit. well, they didn’t. they made me wait 4 different days never came never called.no they sent out a new plumber and they wont give me a new hot water heater, they have to fix it and have to order the part from Sears. they suck. now it’s september 5th and i still have to wait who knows how long. I have tried to call the CEO’s assistant, spoke to Matthew Boyd. He did’t do anything. I can’t do laundry, dishes, no shower or bath… this is insane. I did report them to the BBB 2 days ago. See what happens. I have 3 other accounts and I am canceling all 3 and going with Choice home warranty, lot cheaper, and they are covering pre-existing conditions. and I will be paying only 99/ month for 3 homes. mine, my moms and my sons.
For the love of God, do not put your faith in AHS for any repairs. Our hot water tank blew on Friday 9-3-2010 and we are still waiting. After 30-35 calls to them we are left without any options. Turns out they only have 7 vendors in a 50 mile radious that is contracted with them. We called several local plumers in our area that could come out and replace the heater, they can, I asked for estimates over the phone and called AHS back to ensure they would reimburse us the cost. As it turns out, they have a cap on repairs and would and I quote ” turn down the estimate and require a second oppinion” we would be responsable for paying for both plumers to come out. I offered to replace the heater and they can just pay me back for the part, they stated in not so many words is “HELL NO”. Do not purchase this for your home, go with another company.
Calling after hours to request service the following day is usually met with less than pleasant customer service consultants.
My AC service request has been ongoing with many (3 is too many) calls during the month of August in HOT Texas. Problem has not been rectified. No service on weekend.
Recently the Water Heater in our home went out flooding the basement. I requested service on line and since I had decided to change my contact number, called the repair company that was provided on my service acknowledgement directly. So far so good. I fet since the issue was not in question, that we had a water heater, it was bad, it would be covered and replaced. NOPE!! The repairman had to document the age and code of the water heater. Well, its a 20 year old appliance. No one asked me when I paid the premiums if I was up to code on anything, just that we were covered based on the items listed on their web site at AHS. So I had to pay for the replacement myself.
We have had two other issues with our A/C unit and AHS always found a reason to deny the claim. We have used AHS for the last time.
This company really should be investigated by the Better Business Bureau. They are really bad. They have left us with air all summer and we old and defenseless.
Our AC went out Friday (Labor Day Weekend). The soonest AHS could get anyone to repair the unit was Tuesday (5 days). In an effort to get someone out sooner, I wanted to call AHS approved companies. However, AHS would not release any companies for me to call. They explained that, “…since it was a holiday weekend the time delay was acceptable.” I live in South Carolina, the house was 92 degrees inside and very humid. It was not life threatening, but five days (regardless of the holiday weekend) is a long time to be without ac.
To be fair, I decided to call a few companies, I thought, maybe everyone is busy??? Wrong. I ended up calling three random AC repair companies and two of the three were available to come out the same day.
I payed out of pocket for the repair.
AHS was useless. Even worse, they were not looking out for me (the customer). Their number one priority should always be timely, quality service. Five days is not acceptable under the current weather conditions, thus, I give them a poor rating.
I have a home warranty through America Home Shield. They experience started out fairly well. We had a water heater issue, called it in, plumber called, came the next morning, fixed the issue. Then we had a range top issue and a dishwasher issue. The tech had the wrong info on the dishwasher and we waited for a repair on unit they may eventually need to be replaced. They have been looking for parts now for over two weeks. They keep blaming the repair company and the repair company has blamed them. In the meantime, I’m sitting with a dishwasher that is fallen apart. They also wanted to replace a 36″ unit with a 30″ unit. “We replace items to the same features, not to size. It’s in your contract.” I understand I got this through the closing of my home purchase, and certainly would not renew, but I did expect them to actually do something and timely.
