| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

Had home warranty with these folks, soon after closing appliance died, filled out online paperwork & the buyer paid his $ immediately to HSA. Was told I would be contacted then after i called a few times, the claim expired and HSA simply kept the money…. gettin a lil crooked around here!
I too, after reading these reviews…must post. I bought a home in Feb 2011 and one of the “bonuses” of the sale was the in-place home warranty “thrown in” by the seller…for one year…..I should have insisted o the 500 dollars. I immediately upgraded to the 5-star plan for an additional 60-dollars. Then in the summer, the air condiditoning unit did not work…..no air. /found out no freon in it, and unit not working….so, guess what…it’s on me…despite the fact that the paperwork says it is operable…has central air….I could not check it in the winter as I was told that it would not be smart to run it in February…and was assured by the agent, and the seller and this home warranty company that anything she had covered the last year, would continue to be covered….Ubelieveable —why have a home warranty –especially as a buyer, if nothing is covered even though it is clearly listed in the paperwork that it would be? After reading all of these from the Pittsburgh Area/Washington County….it figures….they’re a rip off. Now, they are calling to sell me the same 5-star plan ….for 150-dollars more….yeah, right.
I purchased 14 contracts from HSA with 5 star upgrades. Inflation adjusted it is probably worth $9.000-10.000. I used them as an overpriced concierge service. Unfortunately often it leads to higher costs. Deductible of $75 is more than trade call in my area so if nothing is really broken I paid more. Some companies they send were horrible and not equipped to deal with a problem. They will pay for small stuff like a faucet which would cost you little to fix yourself. When you have expensive failure, they will weasel their way out of paying for that. Even if they would pay they will make you pay bigger part. Lastly they did not fulfill their contract obligations and that was it for me. They should be happy I did not sue them. I pay insurance regularly, so I do not have to pay up big chunk of money when bad luck strikes. That what insurance is for. HSA does not work for that purpose.
For concierge service I will hopefully be better of just calling BBB for referral.
They are horrible. Will try and find anything wrong with your problem to void your warranty. I completed every requirement required by home inspection and had the furnace inspection up to code. The carbon Monoxide tester went out and a Heating and air company said to replace it. They tried to work with the warranty company. They told the warranty company it was a cracked heat exchanger. After talking and getting 2nd opinions from another Heating and air co. They told me the furnace wasn’t up to code. In which my furnace techniacian never said anything about. I asked teh furnace guy and they said it was fine plenty of room. Had the Home inspector come out and put Air combustion vents in. Then HSA told me it was denied because of remodeling of my basement and it was causing a soot build-up, so it was voided.
They are weasels and bad company do not use them. Worst experience of my home owning experience. Just frustrating.
Disgruntled customer, Greg Simon HSA is a horrible company.
We have contacted the company three times for service, two out of the three have been horriable experinces. Living in Las Vegas a/c is a must, we called because the house was warm. HSA sent a person out who just came in the house and shot temp readinds off the vent and told the wife that because the closet door was off and other doors were open that was why it was warm. The tech never even put gauges on the unit to check freon levels. When I called HSA back they denied the claim for repairs. I called someone else and they found unit was low on freon.
I paid extra for hot tub insurance. I had a leak that was draining the tub, I called for service. They would pay for the jets but not to get to the damaged parts. If you have a warranty on your car and a fan goes bad in the vehicle, you have to open the car door to get in the car, then you have to take the dash apart to fix the fan.
HSA indicates that is not covered, I am very disgusted with this company.
O yeah they did fix my microwave, they spent almost $500.00 to fix that when I could have bought one for $200.00.
This company is totally disfunctional.
Thank you,
The company refused to service our garage door opener because they claim it failed as a result of wear and tear. This company should not be in business and they should inform customer that they can not cancel warranty if you pay the whole year coverage in full. They trick you to pay in full and once paid cannot be cancelled. They are the worst home warranty company out there and i’ll advice you stay away from them.
This company is worthless. They find any way not to provide service. If you paid your premium in full like i did, you cannot cancel it, they keep your money. The supervisor Ben is incompetent. I paid two full years without any claims and when my AC went, the company claim the system was old and refused to service it. After that, I was done with them. Please don’t be cheated by this company like I did. The better business bureau has nothing but negative things about this company. HSA home warranty company is a BAD company.
This company are thieves and I wonder why they are still in business. They called my wife to Convince her to pay the premium in full for 15% off. She paid almost $500 and when water heater went they refused to pay stating it was from wear and tear. Tried to cancel service and was told no refund! This is a very BAD company.
If you are considering buying this home warranty then please consider an alternative. Grab $500, open your window, and throw it out. It will create the same effect as purchasing this warranty. The company provides poor service. First, their telephone response time is poor (15-30 minute waits). Second, the service people they provide are incompetent and do not fix problems effectively. Additionally, I could not understand the last service person’s speech. Finally, they will find any reason possible in the fine print to deny claims. I spoke with a manager who was condescending and refused to work with me on my issues. Overall, I really would not recommend you buy a warranty from them. I am telling everyone I know about my bad experience with them. IF YOU ARE A REALTOR, PLEASE DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM. YOU WILL BE HEARING FROM THE BUYER ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEMS. Please read other reviews. Many people have the same sad story. I wish that I would have gone with another more reputable company. I am stuck because I did not do enough research. My advice, if you do not believe me, is to look at all the reviews posted about this company. We need better consumer protection from companies like this one.
I used HSA for one service call and was very pleased with the service and coverage. I have no complaints.
I just purchased a rather older home in July(Built in 1872) and my agent negotiated in a home warranty with the purchase. I didn’t feel it was necessary since my contractor is also a roommate but it worked with what I was willing to spend for the home and I just dumped almost all my money into a down payment and some remodeling plans that I figured if I get in and the boiler breaks in the winter I won’t be able to fix it.
Boiler’s still going fine. One of the main plumbing stacks in the center of the house was not. The toilet was leaking into one of my kitchens. Not pleasant. It was old iron and cracked somewhere. The entire thing needed replacing. Had my contractor look at it and we spoke with his friend who’s a plumber, then I remembered the warranty with HSA.
The representatives at HSA were friendly but not very knowledgeable about the questions I had(what would be covered). I also had a toilet leaking on the third floor that I’m told needed to be reset(contractor said he could do it in 10 minutes not worth the $60 deductible) I included it in the visit by the plumber since it would be one deductible for both jobs.
In my instance, the plumber came out first, fixed the leak quickly, then evaluated the stack. He determined it did need replaced. The plumber was very knowledgeable about what would and would not be covered. He informed me that pulling the sink from the wall to access the pipe would not be covered but creating the hole in the drywall is covered. He also said the warranty company has a separate company that will come fix the hole about a week after(to make sure nothing went wrong and they don’t fix the hole only to reopen)
I was actually pretty ticked that it didn’t include pulling the sink but we had just moved one so I knew it was an easy enough job. We’re remodeling though so I ask him to provide an estimate of how much it would be for them to do it since we’re busy with other projects. He said they’d have to get back to me. I called about 4 days later to find out what the status was, scheduled my appointment to fix it and asked about the estimate for the sink removal/replacement. The person at the plumber didn’t know and said she’d have to get back to me. She never did. The plumber showed up and immediately started pulling the sink after my tenant left him in. I find out later that they’re charging $400 to pull and replace the sink. I was shocked. The plumber worked with me on the cost though and we came to a very good agreement since I wasn’t informed before hand.
The stack is now replaced. The plumbers that came to do the job did a good job, nothing broken and they weren’t some no-name company.
When I heard about the $400 for the sink, I called HSA, the representative told me the plumber had to call for authorization for any work. He already had. I asked if she could re-review my record to determine what was covered. She could not. If I would have paid the $400, I was planning to file a complaint against HSA and pursue to see if they would reimburse. It seems accessing it should be covered. I’d probably have lost.
I didn’t really plan to write a review but then I read all the one sided negative ones without rational thought. The warranty is an agreement of coverage. If you’re purchasing it, read it before buying it like any insurance. Am I mad as hell they weren’t going to cover the $400, yes. Am I justified? Not really.
Am I renewing? I have no idea, depends on how much it is. I don’t even know how much this one was as I didn’t pay for it. I believe it was a little over a grand though. The plumber’s bill was $1300. It paid for it’s self. Knowing my luck, I’m probably going to use it again(mainly because I’m going to read it and determine what all is covered that I’m living with and get it all fixed) The other big complaint I see is that the fix would’ve cost less than the deductible. Umm, that’s the purpose of a deductible, to prevent frivolous claims and offset the cost. Would it have made sense for me to pay the $60 to have a plumber come re-set my toilet so it didn’t leak? No. Knowledge is power.
Also, a lot of the complaints and negative reviews here are because of poor repairs by the contractors. Hold them responsible. If your car was in an accident Bills Auto Body is your repair shop. Do you hold State Farm responsible for him using cheap paint? No, because he’s billing State Farm for the top of the line stuff. Same deal with your contractors. They’re still billing HSA for the highest quality I’m sure. I’m lucky mine was a good plumber.
I don’t know if you can do this with HSA but I’m sure they’re contracted with multiple local contractors. They told me who was coming. I googled them first and saw most reviews said they were good but very expensive. If the reviews would’ve said they burnt down the house while replacing the plumbing or a lot of other bad reviews, I would’ve called and said hey, got anyone else.
Wish I would have read the reviews before purchase. Waste of money.
Our house came with a one year warranty. Called HSA on Oct 24, 2011 @ 7:30 P.M. with our first claim. The heating system was not blowing heat. The rep stated that they did not have anyone in my area to come out and look at the heating system. They informed me I needed to find a lic,HVAC. I found someone November 1, however they were unable to come out until November 4, because of the first storm of the season and many no heat calls. They came out diagnosed the heating system and condemned it, Called HSA wrote their report and estimate up and sent it in on that Friday. Monday HSA rep Katie called to tell me they have someone in the area (NOW) and they are sending them out to the unit. The second company came out the next day, and the problem was the motor. At first Katie said they are sorry, however they do not cover the motor because it was a conversation from oil to gas. I informed her nowhere is it stated in their contract that conversion kits are not covered. So after a quick rebuttal with Katie, I informed her I was without heat for 17 days with a one year old, because they did not have anyone to come out at first. “Katie” was still adamant that they would not cover the claim; I finally had enough of her attitude and informed her I already had my lawyer review the contract and their office would be contacting them shortly. I was then asked to hold a moment, Katie returned on the line and said her supervisor was looking into the claim and it would be a while, did I want to hold or she could call me back with his decision. I informed her that her supervisor could call me directly. Within two minutes a return call was received and the claim had been approved. The first funny part was when the second tech asked for the deductable. I informed him HSA would be paying as, they sent him out! When originally they said they did not have anyone. Second funny part was when he said he has been working for them for a while now. Advice for everyone who has HSA, have your lawyer review their contract.
Whatever happened to customer service? HSA’s VP sends us all a letter, which is the front page of the contract, and at the bottom they state “We are always here to provide you with the convenience and cost savings that comes with your HAS home warranty”.
I put in a claim regarding a septic lift pump, and HSA recommended I call one of their vendors so I did. This vendor told me they did not handle lift pumps so I called HSA back to let them know, and then they recommended Bill Browns Plumbing who I contacted as well. Bill Brown’s plumbing shows up and services the pump. The next day the pump fails again so I call them back out and this time they pull the pump out of the tank. 7 Days go by and I leave 3 messages throughout he course of the week and Bill did not get back to me. Keep in mind this is 7 days without an operational sewage system. I call HSA to put in a complaint about Bill Browns Plumbing and then HAS apologizes and says I can find a vendor of my choice so I do.
Now I’m expecting the full $1,500 on the replacement of my pump which Bill has in his possession, but HSA says that $200 of the $1,500 is going to Bill even though he didn’t complete the work or let me know when it would be done. Katie from HSA told me on the phone that it does not matter what type of service I got from Bill Browns Plumbing HSA was not responsible, and Bill the incompetent vendor was entitled to the $200. I call Dave the supervisor and I explain the situation and he tells me that it was my fault that I did not contact HSA sooner about the issues with Bill. During this whole time (7 Days without a sewage system) HSA didn’t contact me they just put me in touch with Bill Browns plumbing with the expectation that he and I would handle it. At this point I’m pretty PO’d so I ask Dave from HSA when Bill Browns can have the pump replaced and he can’t give me an answer. What am I supposed to do with that? I guess Dave figures that I already went 7 days without septic so whats a few more days. I’m going with another plumber who will have a pump installed tomorrow and as soon as he does I’m finding another home warranty company.
I called HSA re. some plumbing and electrical issues. Items must be pre-approved and then there is a $75 deductible per request. I reviewed the following items with HSA. 1) 1st floor sink drain is slow 2) 2nd floor bathroom sinks drain slow 3) 2nd floor faucets leak through the handle 4) 2nd floor tub faucet leaks through the handle 5) Water heater exhaust vent is leaning and loose from its strap and you can see light thru the roof. 6) Water heater supply line expansion tank not supported.
The plumber arrive early and after looking at the items he went out to his van to call HSA. He was on the phone with HSA for at least 30mins describing the problems with HSA trying to find any possible excuse not to cover them. I went outside to find out what was going on (as I did not want to be charged their $90/hr fee for time they spent on the phone with HSA). Eventually HSA called me to tell me that only item would be covered (item 5).
I asked the Fasco plumber to fix the other items (since he was already here) and I’ll pay for them. 1) did not fix – said it was a fixture problem and pedicel sinks. He said a handyman could fix. 2) adjusted sink stoppers and problem resolved. 3) & 4) installed faucet repair kits. Estimates for repair kit installation vs installing new fixture were out of sight. I had bought new fixtures in case they needed replacement but to install them was well over $200 and repair kit was $195. A handyman is soooooooooooooooooooo much cheaper. I started to feel anxious about the quality of work and that I was being taken, as I have never worked with Fasco plumbing. So I googled them and found horrible reviews and they only got one star. One review said “Fasco’s job is to come out, charge you $75 and make up an excuse for the home warranty not to have to pay for it. ” Wow… sounds about right (re. 30+ min call with HSA). See reviews on Fasco http://raleigh.citysearch.com/profile/36276098/raleigh_nc/fasco_plumbing_inc.html Now I am real nervous… but we are in the middle of the work. 5) It took him all of 5 mins to install additional straps and the problem was not completely fixed. The exhaust pipe is still crooked and one can still see like around the vent thru the roof. I took photos and showed it to him. He said that he could not straighten the vent or seal around the pipe/vent. I needed a roofer to do that. He called HSA (this time with me listening in) and said they need to send our a roofer to complete the job. HSA said that was not covered (why am I not surprised). He argued the HSA and said it was part of the same repair. No luck. I also argued the point.. no go. He eventually put us on hold for his supervisor. After waiting again (another tactic by HSA to get you to give up), we re-explained the problem and he again sang out of the say hymn book. We spent more time arguing and eventually I got angry that they were wasting so much of my time and out of frustration (which they count on) hung up. I now have to hire a roofer to finish the job. 6) Add straps (5 – 10 min job). He was here for over 2 hrs and a lot of that time was on the phone with HSA.
Cost break down to: 2, 3, 4, and 6: $285 5: $75 deductible (for 5 mins of work and still did not complete the job.
I would never recommend them!!!
I think they hire poor quality contractors that will do/say whatever they have to say to make sure that whatever the issue is, that it is not covered. Poor business practices.
We’ve had to use the warranty 3 times. The first time was on a stove. After the $75 copay, they gave us the crappiest, cheapest option out there. We ended up getting a better stove and having to pay the difference. I think we only got about $250 alotted for a new stove.
The second time we had water coming through our basement ceiling from a toilet upstairs. It cost us $75 for a guy to install a $5 wax ring we could have done ourselves. We’re stuck with the water damage, though.
Then, we had a boiler causing problems. A guy came out, said we needed to add water, and left. We waited for the system to cool so we could add water, only to find out that the valve is broken. So, we had no heat with our 2 year old in the house last night.
We need a new valve and it may take a week for the part to come in. I’m tempted just to shell out the money myself to get a whole new boiler at this point. I told the HSA guy of my concerns last night and all he cold tell me was that he had no involvement with the scheduling of this stuff.
This is all on top of the $400-some it costs to even get the warranty. I am not pleased and will not renew. It’s not worth it for me after the initial cost and deductables.
It is better if you don’t carry this home warranty b/c you need to pay the $75 deductible before you can talk about the coverage. The contractor they sent to our house was rude, arrogant and unprofessional. I was told by HSA, twice, that the problem was not covered. It seems to me that nothing is covered by this warranty. I will never use it again. And please don’t buy it.
I want to express my upmost displeasure with the service that I received from HSA regarding a claim that I submitted on 9/13/2011. The claim was filed as a result of a home inspection that was done because I sold the property. On the detailed home inspection, a picture was taken of a leaking toilet and the damage that was being caused from water dripping into the basement. HSA sent two plumbers to inspect that issue and a few other minor plumbing issues that were occurring. The plumbers kept saying how busy they were and how many other jobs they had to do that day. I pointed out the water that was seeping from the toilet and they said that it was just moisture and it wasn’t leaking. I then took them into the basement to show them the (still wet) water mark on the ceiling and their reply to that was, “that can be from anything and it looks like an old mark”. I explained that it was still wet and they quickly discounted that and followed up with, “what else do we need to look at”. After inspecting the other issues, which included installing a bathroom faucet, resetting a bathroom toilet and fixing the pop ups on two sinks and bathtubs, they gave me an estimate of approximately $2,000 to make the repairs.(keeping in mind that they said the toilet that the housing inspector made a point to take pictures of, wasn’t leaking) This price was simply insane because I knew that it shouldn’t take more than 4 hours to do all of the repairs.
I had a certified plumber come out to make the repairs and for everything that they had listed the other plumber charged me $220 and it took him about 3 hours to make ALL of the repairs. So based on the amount of time that it took to make the repairs, HSA’s plumber’s estimate of $2,000 would mean that he wanted to charge me $670 per hour to do the work. Is this the type of plumbers that HSA feels should be representing them????? I’m lucky that I have a general understanding of how much time this type of work should take and how completely unreasonable their fees were. This is the type of thing that you see on the news all the time where contractors rip off the elderly. That is unless HSA feels that $670 per hour is a fair fee to charge their customers??
On Wednesday, 10/5/2011 I visited the home because the final walk through was to be done later that day and found, just as the inspector did, the toilet was leaking and there was water coming through my basement ceiling. Since HSA’s plumbers convinced me that the toilet wasn’t leaking I didn’t have the other plumber reinspect it. When I called in a panic to advise that the plumbers that were sent by HSA to inspect the leaking toilet didn’t find the leak, the HSA representative stood by the plumbers inspection stating that there’s no way that the toilet was leaking. I expressed all of my concerns, advised that there were pictures of the toilet leaking, the watermark on the ceiling etc, how rushed the plumbers were and all she kept saying was, “it couldn’t have been leaking”. After realizing that there wasn’t anything that she was going to try to do to help, I had to ask her, “what can we do, today, to get this fixed. I expressed much earlier in the conversation that the final walk through was at 4:30pm and all she could recommend was having another plumber come out on another day or have one of her plumbers come out but she said that they could charge an extra fee for it being an emergency. I explained that it was only an emergency because your plumbers totally missed the issue on 9/13. She also kept saying that she could have another plumber come out but they may charge me overtime. She also condescendingly said, “if you didn’t wait until the last minute we could have addressed this sooner”. I explained that I didn’t wait until the last minute because I called on 9/13/2011 to have plumbers come out and if they would have taken the time to do their jobs correctly I wouldn’t be in this panicked situation. She then said, “hold on” and placed me on hold. About 5 minutes later a different person came on and said, “How can I help you”. Based on the tone and the simple, “how can I help you”, I had to ask if she was aware of what I was speaking with the other person about for the last half hour and she said, “yes”. She than reiterated much of the same info that the other representative did and said that they could have someone else come out but there would be another deductible and they couldn’t waive the emergency fee unless there was home damage. I’m not sure about you but if there’s water coming through your ceiling, I personally view that as “home damage”. Maybe HSA’s definitions are different. HSA is a complete rip off and I see absolutely no point in wasting your time in buying this service. I only purchased because I was using it as a selling tool to include in the purchase of the home but their service was the worst that I’ve experienced from ANY company in my entire life.
SCAM
Overall they are not worth the bother. i called them twice once when i had a catastrophic ac error on a 100 degree day. I would up calling my normal (shiester) repair service jsut to get someone out there, they fixed nd HSA went back and forth 50X about covering. they wanted a detailed analysis from the repair service man but they refused to wait on hold for 45 minutes until someone from HSA picks up. this dragged on for months when i finally heard from the service tech HSA said the whole thing expired and they would not honor anyways. this was ‘free’ from the real estate agent but was not worth the time of day. glad i did not pay for this CRAP service.
the goal of this company is to not cover any thing in your home like they claim. any thing they can cover gets put under an “act of god” and denied. I experiance a plumbing failure that was determinded to be caused by an act of god.
dont waste your money its more of a headache than any thing else. If my claim had been covered they would not have covered any secondary damage ie. water damaged floor, cabinets and dry wall. the plumbing issue was behind the kitchen cabinets and the repair required removal of the cabinets to gain access to the cabinets. all they would have covered would have been the failed section of pipe and the time to replace that pipe.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY…
This is a horrible company on every aspect. It is very hard to get through to a customer service representative and when you do get someone they are very rude and unknowledgable. The contractors they use are very unprofessional and have a major lack of knowledge/experience to explain it nicely. Anything that does occur ends up not being covered so it is worthless to have even have the contract. I will never renew my contract and I will never recommend them to anyone that I know or even come in contact with. I was so excited to buy this house with the bonus of the warranty. I am very disappointed with how this company handles business.
I recently purchased a home with an existing HSA contract. While debating whether or not to extend it, my wall oven malfunctioned on the very day the contract was to expire. A phone call to HSA was answered promptly and I was given a number to contact A & E to come to my home and check out the oven. A few days later the technician from A & E determined that the thermostat was faulty, the company no longer makes wall ovens, and there are no parts available for repairs. Later that week, after the research process was completed, I was offered a new oven as a replacement or the option of purchasing an oven of my choice and paying the difference of the more expensive model. I opted to buy my own oven and within two weeks received a check in the amount of the cost of the replacement oven. All HSA representatives were very professional and courteous during all my contacts with them. I have renewed my contract for another year.
I will never purchase a home warranty with this company again. If I purchase another home, I will request a discount on the price instead of the home warranty. We were able to use the warranty to replace our dishwasher, but the hassle was not even worth the savings.
This company and home warranty is a complete and total rip-off. My husband and I just bought a house last November and are still covered under the one year home warranty plan w/ HSA. Over the weekend, our sump pump failed and we had over 2 feet of water in our basement (and rising). Because we have a 7 week old newborn, my husband went out right away to get a pump to prevent the water from rising further and get the water out of our house as soon as possible. We just got off the phone with a representative from the company who had such an incredibly poor attitude. She stated that the sump pump would not be covered by the warranty (even though all of our paperwork says that it is covered) because we already replaced – which we had to do immediately to protect our home and family as quickly as possible. After stating as much to the customer service rep, she came back on the line and stated that she could send someone out to see our broken pump but if he decided that it didn’t break while it was in the sump pump hole, then we would have to pay his travel costs out of our own pocket. Of course we said no – we now have over $10K in damages that we will have to replace from our damaged basement, we can’t not afford to take the risk of possibly being liable for the agent’s travel costs if he doesn’t agree to replace our pump simply because we bought a new one and the broken one is no longer in the pump hole. To say the least, I have never been so disappointed in a company who I expected to be there for its clients in a time of need. Their customer service was atrocious and their lack of holding up their end of the bargain in our home warranty deal was an outrage.
