| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights
President and CEO of HSA Home Warranty has responded to the criticism aired by some of their customers. Please read HSA Home Warranty Response

First of all. HSA is sucks SUCKS. ACTUALLY WE HAD AIR CONDITIONER PROBLEM SINCE END OF JULY.. FIRST WE TRY TO FIGURE OUT BY OURSELF AND IT DIDN’T WORK. So We called HSA Aug 4th 2011. they sent guy to our house and found problem. They shipped out on Aug 8, 2011. We expect to have air soon. But after one week we no one contact us at all.. we call HSA and Vendor, Vendor said he never received part. we call HSA said ok. They shipped to wrong address. They reorder part should be there Aug 17th 2011. We still didn’t get any. I call them again last night. HSA said we will contact you tomorrow. Today We did not hear from them I called them again. They computer showed they shipped wrong address again. How could you do business like this. I surprise they have bankrupcy yet. I guess pretty soon they will loose all the cutomers and trust. August is pretty hot without air conditioner. And baby cry… can’t sleep at night…..
HSA Experence is really SUCKS..SUCKS. We definiately not renewal our service with them and will let all our freind know HSA can not be trust at all. We will be lucky if our air can be fix by the end of Aug 2011 and by then It is not hot anymore.
Thanks for reading
Interesting how many bad reviews this company gets. I will make a long story short: I bought a house and have not been in here a full year yet. I have made three claims and only one was covered because the contractor used to work for HSA but then quit because he didnt agree with how they treated their customers. He knew how to word things to get the claim covered and my personal opinion is they SUCK!!!!!!!!!!! Definately do not reccomend HSA.
I felt more secure in purchasing my older home due to it being covered by an HSA Home Warranty for a year. Sure enough, we had a warm spell within a week of closing and noticed that the HVAC unit was not working properly so I called HSA and was told that since they had no local vendors in my area I was free to call the vendor of my choice and just to make sure whoever I used called HSA with their diagnosis before commencing any work. The 1st vendor came out and, after inspecting the unit he said it was “completely shot” and needed to be completely replaced for a price of $7800. He faxed his written diagnosis and estimate to HSA and I waited. When nobody had contacted me or the vendor a week later I called to find out what the problem was and was told that the estimate was extremely high and they would need me to get a second opinion.
When the 2nd vendor finished inspecting the unit and also felt that it needed to be replaced we called HSA, and after holding for 45 min. the tech had to leave for another appt, but told me to give the HSA rep his cell # to contact him for his estimate. Again, no call back from anyone so I call HSA the next day and am told that the 2nd vendor did not give them a good enough “diagnosis” and told them that he would have to return with diagnostic equipment for what they wanted…at a cost of $500 that HSA would not cover. So, I called vendor #3….who came out, inspected the unit, said it needed to be replaced and contacted HSA with his “diagnosis” and estimate (because I was very adamant with him that they would not authorize anything without a proper diagnosis) and again we waited.
This time when I called HSA they claimed they had never been contacted by the 3rd vendor at all, even though they had faxed him paperwork that he had completed and faxed back to them. I gave them this vendor’s ph# to contact him directly….he says they never called….they say they left a message and he never called back. Who would YOU believe at this point.
We are now into the 1st wk in August during the hottest summer in 15 yrs and I still dont have A/C that works so I do some research and put a call into the Sr VP of Operations. The very next day I get a call back, very apologetic and assuring me that this is NOT the way this company normally does business and they will make sure to have this problem resolved asap.
True to his word, I get a call from Richard Chappel @HSA within minutes to tell me that a vendor has been dispatched to my home and will be contacting me shortly to schedule an appt. Minutes later the tech contacts me to say he’s in the area and I left work early to meet him right then. After inspecting unit he also says the unit needs replacing and after charging me for the service call that I expected would be paid directly by HSA he left saying I should hear back from either him or HSA shortly.
The vendor called me on 8/9 with prices for replacing the unit and I asked him why he was not calling HSA directly. He said I should call HSA and give them his bid prices and have them call him. I immediately called and got Richard Chappel’s voicemail- left a message with the information given me by the vendor and requested that he deal with their vendor directly. Today (8/12) I called the vendor to ask him what the status was and he has still not heard back from anyone at HSA so I called Richard Chappel again and got his voicemail saying he was out of the office until 8/15 and would return calls upon his return. I certainly wont be holding my breath!!!!! I think this company is the biggest bunch of rip-off artists I have ever dealt with and I will shout it from the highest rooftop to keep others from going through the same shoddy treatment!!!
I have kept HSA warranty for last 5 years. Each year there has been something or the other, given we have an old house where the appliances were about 5 years old already by the time I had moved in. Never have I been asked the question around showing maintenance records etc. On the other hand, we feel quite better knowing that no matter what fails, we can call one number 24 by 7 and they take care of all. I dont have to find contractors or deal with the issue of being overcharged. HSA has always send good repairmen, be it my Heating System, Washer, Dryer or Microwave. When our Microwwave broke down, they sent the repairman who said it will cost a lot to get it repaired and HSA took a couple of days to think through (kept me informed) and asked me to buy a unit of my own choice for upto 429$. That is not money for a cheapo product. Got it done and within a week, HSA had a check out to me for the 429$. And we have a new Microwave Oven over our gas range. Love it!!
This company is a total scam. We called to have electrical wiring repaired as the circuit tripped every time we used an outlet. They sent out a contractors who immediately told us that it would not be covered and then suggested he would charge us $125 for the service fee but would cut us a break and only charge the deductible. I noticed a lot of $75 checks in the contractors note book. HSA made no mention of this fee and only made mention of the deductible if work was performed. After several discussions with HSA agents where they referred to their warranty as a GAMBLE they declined to correct the situation. HSA warranty is a scam where they get rich and so do there contractors doing no work.
I’ve had HSA for five years. I wonder if the contractors are the ones who are cutting corners with rebuilt parts, etc. One toilet has had the insides replaced every year for several years because it seems the float gets stuck and the tank leaks into the bowl or the flapper stops sealing. Finally, my husband replaced the insides himself and we haven’t had a problem in a couple of years. I have noticed that the plumbing contractor no longer works for HSA so wonder if they were replaced because they used cheapo parts.
On the plus side, HSA has replaced my 13-year old pool pump motor without problem. I’ve never had to prove maintenance on anything that they’ve worked on or replaced.
I had an issue with my 17-year old air-conditioner blowing hot air every year for a couple of years and and doing without air for a couple of days each summer until HSA was able to get the AC guy out to work on it. HSA was great about replacing the compressor two summers in a row and going on a 3rd time along with various other parts, condenser, capacitors, fan motor, etc. I finally got tired of sweating it out for a couple of days each summer in the heat of Nevada and asked why they wouldn’t replace the unit. They said, as long as it could be kept running by replacing the compressor or other parts, then they would just keep replacing the compressor and other parts. I told them I was replacing the air conditioner and wanted to know how much they would pay towards the replacement. They offered $1000 out of $7000. I accepted.
On the plus side, my expensive $3,000 water softener unit failed. The contractor put in a cheapo $500 unit. I complained and provided proof that the original unit was $3000. HSA agreed to let me pick another unit up to $3000 to replace the cheapo one and even allowed me to keep the cheapo one which I gave to my son. I chose a unit that cost $1000 instead but was very impressed that they corrected the contractor’s cheapo choice and agreed to replace the unit up to $3000 plus letting me keep the cheapo one to do with as I wished.
Overall, I’m happy with HSA. I think they’ve been mostly fair with me. I would have been happier if they would have paid at least half of my $7000.00 air conditioner, especially since they won’t have to do any service calls on it for the next 10 years because I received a 10-year warranty – parts & labor. Win some – lose some. I do have the 5-star plan so I don’t know if that makes a difference in the response to policy holders. Overall – I would recommend them to others. However, I am checking out other companies because HSA’s rates and deductibles have increased each year and I am on a fixed income, otherwise, I’d stay with HSA.
My wife and I purchased a home only three months ago, felt a bit more secure knowing that the seller’s had taken the time and money to procure a “home warranty”. The realtor billed it as, “a worry-free home-buying experience. Notice that I gave the company 3′s, the average.
After reading these reviews I regret not having researched HSA more thoroughly. I have sent a link to the realtor hoping that after realizing the countless negative reviews they will no longer use this company.
For the meat of the reason… Wife complained about smelling sewer gasses from the master bedroom bath’s sink, toilet and shower. She dug out the warranty paper work and there you go, HSA. Well, I’m not going to waste my time or money. They can keep the couple hundred dollars the seller spent buying this piece of trash. I will fix this myself or find a repairman I am comfortable with. I have gone down the road of shifty contractor’s and begrudging claim representatives before. There is a special place in h*ll for them, they will get theirs in the end for sure.
HSA sucks. It’s that simple. If your house is in perfect condition, with no pre-existing problems that you can prove, have zero defects in the policy period, you don’t need them. If anything does go wrong, they won’t deal with it anyway.
If ANYTHING goes wrong, they don’t own it.
I cannot recommend this firm. They have been quite useless in our home during the entire policy period.
The lateral in our pool filter broke. I called HSA and they sent a contractor out to replace it quickly. They replaced the entire filter with new sand. Our only cost for the repair was the $75 service call. In my opinion the warranty has been well worth it so far.
I have adjusted my ratings to reflect the recent service provided by HSA. They corrected the billing issues and a local manager called me to assure me that everything was taken care of.
They are nice enough on the phone, when they get around to answering it. My HVAC evaporator coil had a leak and needed replaced. At first I was told they would replace the coil and I would have to pay the service company additional uncovered charges close to $400. Then the day they were going to do the install they said it would be $705. I called HSA and they told me I could get a cash out. They had it listed as a $1600 repair but only offered me $361. I called a reputable company and they said they could do the job with quality parts (better than original) for a flat price of $1,100. HSA only had one HVAC contractor so their was no negotiation with them (SSI). I found the lady at (SSI) very rude and nasty to deal with as she knew you were captive. The scam with HSA apears to be that they provide low quality parts to the service company and then allow them to add on uncovered charges. It was a horrible experience. The company I did use (comfort control)were great! Very quick, informative, friendly and did an excellent job.
I can’t get over how this company treats their customers. the phone adjusters act like they’re the client! Yeah, they’re great for about the first year–taking care of every problem and making you secure you got a great deal. Then bam! Reality sets in and prices go up and services that were under your plan are now add ons.
I’ve had my ac go out 3 times in the 2.5 years i’ve lived in vegas. every time they send a different guy {what was wrong with the last guy} and each service call is the $55 deductible. my house is band aid fixed for another year. this time the service guy pulled the “lack of service” routine out of his hat! Stated more service before i even lived here! why did the other 2 techs miss such a blatant “lack of service.” needless to say they denied my claim.
A second problem I had was with my pool pump which HSA worked on a year ago. Instead of replacing parts they rigged it with rebuilt parts. When it quit again this year, My pool guy looked at it and noticed the parts used were wrong size and HSA created more problems.
Don’t buy HSA! they are useless and you’re better off saving an emergency fund
I’ve had several negative experiences–they find a way out of covering every time. total waste of money. you’re better off saving for repairs as they come up. with HSA, you’ll have to pay for it anyway!!!!
I agreed to one year of service at $430 per year. HSA charged my credit card $10,000 for the service and claimed it was a computer glitch. After my credit card company’s fraud division contacted me about the charges I spoke to the local HSA support. They had the charges credited back to my card a few hours later. I do not have faith that they would be able to handle any claims if they can not handle a simple credit card transaction.
This so-called “company,” HSA or in Virginia, HSAV, as others have noted is a scam. Only a fool or someone lacking basic maintenance skills would rate this company highly.
We noted a problem with our AC just after we moved into our home. To make sure we followed the HSA process accurately, we called customer service to verify the process. Our problems began there. We received conflicting information. One person said to “call out a technition and have the problem diagnosed.” They said it was our decision what service company we used. We did that and a few days later, I noticed on the website the status of our claim was still waiting for us to call a technition.
I called customer service again to find out why the status didn’t change. The lady said they were waiting for a technition to call them with the status. When I mentioned they already checked the unit and issued a report, the lady said, “Oh, they should have called us on the spot. You will need to contact them and have them call us with the report.” When I mentioned it would be difficult to find the technition on a weekend and HSA should be able to help, I was transferred to a manager, “Katie,” who said I never should have called a technicion to look at the problem. HSA needed to make the call and as a result, it was likely I had to pay the $110 service charge out of my pocket.
Next, the manager said they would send an emergency repair request out and their tech would be to the home ASAP. That process took three days. Upon arrival, the HSA contractor tech (a nice enough person but lacking in tech skills) found the same problem as the previous tech. Freon or R22 was leaking from both the outside (compressor) coil and the inside (evaporator) coil. He recommended both coils be replaced.
As a former maint. manager in a large manufacturing plant, I’ve replaced massice HVAC units and I know cost structures. Coils for my AC system run $300 each. Labor to install both coils is approx. 6-8 hours based on experience.
Almost as soon as the problem was reported to HSA, I received an email (no call or other professional courtesy) stating the conditionwas pre-existing and they would not honor the warranty or make the repair. The bastards even had the gall to inform me in the email they want to make sure I’m happy by looking at any future claim I may have. What a joke!
Read the reviews. These are crooks flying under the radar. They’ve exposed a part of the legal system that may not have the capability to stop them from doing this to unsuspecting homeowners. Those rating this joke of a company highly really do not understand the scope or nature or the repairs they claim to be happy with. Most of of the so-called warranty service provided by HSA could be done at low cost by an amateur with basic mechanical or electrical knowledge at lost cost and these are EXACTLY the service people HSA uses IF they fix anything.
If the actual cost of a repair even come close to the cost of the warranty, HSA will not honor it.
As with most of us, I work long hours for my salary and I don’t have the time to chase HSA into court but I will do so. These criminals exemplify what is wrong with American business leadership today. All they live for is to enrich themselves at our expense and HSA is no exception.
After our first year in our new home, my husband and I decided to renew our warranty with HSA for one more year. We thankfully didn’t need to use them in our first year, but new our A/C was heading down hill, so decided better safe than sorry.
We are SO sorry we went with HSA again as opposed to shopping around to different warranty companies other than what was handed to us when we bought our house. We have had a terrible experience with them.
In upper 80 degree waether, our A/C crashed on May 20th and it wasn’t until June 7, we learned it will be repaired on June 9th (3 weeks later). HSA did not return any phone calls they said they would, they did not have information in a timely manor, and when they learned that I was pregnant and living in an 85 degree house and said they would move this to top priority, we saw no increased action or follow-thru.
All in all, we are highly disappointed in HSA and will not recommend this company to anyone. We have already gotten in touch with our realtor to advise them to suggest alternative home warranty companies to their clients.
There are good warranty companies out there. HSA is NOT one of them.
HSA has been a money-saver for our 1930′s home for the past 2 years. We were given our first policy from the seller and we were so glad to have it in place as the night we moved in (October) our furnace ignitor stopped working which meant we slept in the freezing cold. Being new home owners, we decided to wait the night out and see if it was a user-issue with the thermostat. After contacting HSA, we were pleased to have helpful customer service by our side within 24-hours of home ownership.
Since that first night, our 70-year-old-plus home has had several unprecedented issues including leaking bathroom plumbing, air conditioning and furnace failure, broken dishwasher components, and water pressure issues. Each and every time HSA has been prompt to deliver quality professionals to assess our needs.
With the summer heat and recent switch to A/C, we were surprised to find the thermostat reading much higher than what it was programmed to be. We contacted HSA and were connected with a vendor quickly. The vendor came out and assessed the issue. We only paid our deductible of $75 for a $500 dye test/recharge. This repair alone is worth the benefits of having an HSA warranty.
Before engaging in repairs, HSA and the vendors have clearly communicated their recommendations and have laid out the options for us. There has been an occasional repair that was caused by incorrect installation from the previous owner… and while we had to pay out of pocket (understandably so) the vendor worked hard to find the root cause of the problem so we would only have to repair the issue once.
My family has been extremely pleased with the prompt attention and respectful communication we’ve received from HSA. Without this warranty, we would be out hundreds and thousands of dollars on home repairs. Because we chose to renew our warranty, we have ease of mind when issues arise with our home.
I have had AHS for a year and made three claims — non of which were repaired. So now we have been without A/C for a week and the contractor they sent out is incompetent, unprofessional and slow. They are now telling me that it will be another week before the contractor has the A/C compressor and can come out to make the repair. HSA needs to know that they are only as good as their contractors. Before this incident I was going to renew my contract. Ha! My contract is up later this month and we are walking away. Good riddance.
I am still out of ac and they care more about the contractors than the customers. They pay nothing for you to use contractors that you trust and their contractors are the worst and will give you a lot of run around, not to mention add on charges not covered by HSA. Scam, scam, scam.
I have only had HSA for 2 months. Unfortunately, I am having issues with my HVAC system. I didn’t intend on making use of the my home warranty this quickly or at all. The hassle in using the company has been outrageous. The vendors referred to me by the company were not acceptable. The first vendor did not even respond to HSAs request or to my phone call message. The second vendor could only schedule an appoint 4 days out. The 3rd vendor scheduled an appointment for the next day. However, they did not make the appointment and reschedule me for 4 days later. When I called them to talk to someone about the issues they seemed uninterested in assisting me. At one point the representative did say “well you do not have to use us. You can secure your own services with a company to fix your AC system.” I felt that was and unacceptable response from someone that should care about their product. I have this warranty for a year because it was a part of the package when I purchased the home. However, I will not be renewing it when it expires. When talking to the last vendor that did not show he make it clear to me that HSA does not pay the vendors well and that is why their customers are at the bottom of the list. It is unfortunate that I had to waste 4 days attempting to get service using my home warranty program. I will not recommend HSA to others because of their poor vendor list and their uninterested/rude attitude when I called for service.
When listing our 10 yr old home we purchased the HSA Sellers Protection along with additional coverage of Heating and Air. We have 3 units providing both central heating and air and since they have been in service for 10 yrs felt that was appropriate. 10 days after we listed and acquired the coverage one of our units stopped producing cold air. We filed a claim with HSA and were passed to local Heating and Air Contractor. To this point, everything was handled with efficiency and professionalism. Then things changed…. The representative from the Heating and Air company was rude and inflexible in scheduling. One of us wanted to be present during the inspection, but they would only come in the mornings while we were at work regardless of what day we scheduled for. After the scheduled visit, we receive a call from the same person handling scheduling saying it was a pre-existing condition that the leak was too big and it would take much longer than the 10 days since the policy inception for a leak of that size to develop. They said they would fix for $1100. We said no and they then ensued to accuse us of lying and committing insurance fraud. So, we assume that despite their total lack of professionalism and poor quality service that they must atleast know what they are talking about regarding HVAC or how could they still be in business? Since we were going to have to pay for repairs, we called the company that we had used for years for service and repairs and trusted. After his visit he reported that upon arrival the caps for the lines were left off (by the HSA Contractor) and found laying in the grass. Further, he pressurrized the system fully and found no significant leaks. In summary, the HSA assigned HVAC Contractor was trying to hustle us for approximately $800 of unnecessary repairs then became confrontational and accusational when we elected to use our own HVAC company. Since you have to pay $50 and have no control over what company is selected by HSA, I feel they are only as good as their contractors. In this case, they were terrible. I gave a 3 on Customer Service because I felt like the HSA representatives handled themselves well, but the rest of the experience was horrible.
I was surprised since I have had issues with past home warranty services. We had a HVAC tech out within 24hrs and a heat exchanger replaced in 48hrs. The furnace was the same age of the home (10-11yrs), and the HE warranty just ran out, HSA did their part. We were very happy. Reading some other posts, I think any issues with a company seem to be regional, but hopefully are resolved quickly…again, no complaint here.
Recently bought a home that came with the HSA warranty. I have notified my real estate agent and the broker that this company is about the worst company I have ever had to deal with. Hot water heater started leaking after 6 months in the house. It is now been 1 week and we are still waiting for the service company that HSA sent out to come and replace it. They were real quick to show up and collect their $75 service fee but have not been back to replace the heater. Each time we call they have an emergency they have to do first. HSA customer service could care less. They are a scam just like the companys that work with them. I hope every real estate agent reads this report before they try to sell this insurance.
We’ve had HSA for almost a year. Had only one claim for a problem with our garage door opener. a technician (sub-contracted, but very good) responded promptly and identified the problem. Was very disappointed with HSA’s response and how the repair was handled. They questioned a licensed technician and seemed to look for a reason not to replace the unit. Finally, they agreed to replace and the technician promptly procured and installed. That’s not all. About the same time we received a renewal notice, but because of the experience wasn’t sure if we wanted to go with this Company anymore. A month later, we get a follow-on notice about renewal and the quote had increased to $630, a $230 increase over the initial quote! I called to find out if they’d still honor the initial quote, and told this was a limited time offer, but they’d offer me a new quote of only $500. After the personal experience and reading other reviews, will pass up this offer.
HSA warranty came with the purchase of my home. I can see from the numerous poor reviews, that if the warranty isn’t issued with the home purchased, then HSA proabably wouldn’t have too many customers.
I called in a work order for my roof. The roofing company, Cook Construction, which is as RUDE and INCOMPETENT as HSA, came out to diagnose the issue. Note: They cancel the first two appts and finally showed up, placed some tar on the roof and left. It rained a week later, the roof is now worse than it was before. I CALLED AGAIN TO MAKE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT, IT TOOK AN ENTIRE WEEK TO GET A RESPONSE FROM COOK CONSTRUCTION.
I finally got an appt date, took a day off work, and they cancelled AGAIN, and stated it may be weeks before they can come out, it is not feasible for them to come back, it’s more than 50 miles away and gas is too high. It may take up to three weeks.
It has been a HASSLE, with HSA and Cook Construction.
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!
HSA SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO STAY IN BUSINESS AND THE COMPANIES UNDER THIER CONTRACT IS AS CORRUPTED AS HSA.
YOU’VE BEEN FOREWARNED!!!
