| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights
President and CEO of HSA Home Warranty has responded to the criticism aired by some of their customers. Please read HSA Home Warranty Response

Received a notice in Jan to renew a policy in Apr. Had an issue with a garage door opener in Feb, which was painful to get taken care of through Customer Service. Company working the issue was superb, but HSA Customer Service even questioned/challenged a licensed technician about the problem. Finally got resolved and garage door opener repaired. Recently got another notice, and guess what, quote was approximateyl $200 more than the initial quot ein Jan! See Ya HSA!!!
HSA’s contractors are very good and will fix your problems with no hassle. However, HSA itself is a scam.
When it came time to renew my warranty, I was denied due to a “managerial decision”. No explanation. I had a handful of claims and all were expected for a 50 year old home. None of my claims came remotely close to the cost per type of claim outlined in my contract with HSA.
Bottom line – consumers assume that a warranty company will make enough money on its customer pool to cover the cost of unexpected and necessary repairs.
HSA seems to evaluate its warranties on a per customer basis. If they don’t make money off of you as an indivudual, they will deny reapplication. If you bought a house that came with HSA (you pay for it even if it’s ‘wrapped in’), like me, do yourself a favor and ask your realtor to renegotiate with another warranty company.
All newly purhased homes neeed a home warranty that begins on the closing date of the sale of the home. This company does not do that. Our refridgerator malfunctioned 3 months after living here. We were told by this Home Warranty Company that they did not cover “maintenance” of the fridge. I asked how ofen they performed “maintenance” at their own homes…and they could not reply.
So, GET IT IN WRITING AS TO WHAT EXACTLY IS COVERED BEFORE YOU PURCHASE YOUR NEW HOME…OR NEXT HOME. THIS COMPANY SHOULD NOT BE ONE TO DEAL WITH.
Had a boiler blow and like many called HSA after tech was there. No work was done just diagnostics. Called HSA to ask how to proceed they said to go ahead with the company since it was an emergency situation. They said that the claim would be paid. My tech talked to them and let them know the price, etc. It cost e $600. They gave me a check for $60 and claimed they could have done it for $135 and said that they advised me that the claim would be adjusted to their pricing. Spoke to several “managers” none of whom would call me back. Every call initiatedby myself. They stick to the same script almost verbatim which leads you to believe this is a big SCAM!.. Advised my realtor not to use them and will tell everyone never to use this company.
HSA Warranty has been a total ripoff. Our washing machine has been broken for a month. Twice they have failed to show-up for appointments. The two appointments they have made it to, they have been unable to resolve the problem. Once replacing a valve, once replacing a belt.
Nope the thing still leaks all over the floor!!!
Now they want to replace the motor. Today, technician supposed to be here between 8am and 12 noon. Me sitting at home for four hours waiting, only to get a call at 11.55am, they are still stuck on another job!!!
HSA Home Warranty is a huge RIPOFF!!!
This company is a joke they sent a technician out to look at my oven after we had only been in the house for 5 days the oven would just turn on by itself so we couldnt use it because it wouldnt regualte temp. and overheat the technician showed up not even dressed professional read the code on the stove did no troubleshooting and said it needed a cicuit board so it then took 10 days to get a circuit board in and i had to call and raise cane to get them to come back out and fix it he then came back out put the board in and then said the cleaning lock was bad and now the oven wont turn on after the new board was put in which im a diesel mechanic and dont know much about ovens but it seems that if it was troubleshot and now just going off of codes then he would have known this so then he says he would have to order more parts and they called and said it would be three days then i got a call saying 14 more days so i said replace my oven this was un exceptable and they say no this repair is going on a month now and no resolution i am very disastified with HSA and they should be shut down or made to use reputable companies and have people with good CSR skills
-I got this with the purchase of my home exactly a year ago. they are slow about getting something done. if you use the warranty a lot they will not re-new with you again. i would not reccomend this company
Horrible service, our sump pump failed and the basement flooded. The tech came in and found the sump pump not working which caused the flooding in the basement. He opened the pit and tapped things around and the pump restarted again. His recommendation was to get the pump replaced as it may fail again, just like it did now and caused the flood. BUT HSA refused to authorize it claiming ” its working now” even though it failed and caused the flood.
their plan would be,, next time it rains I am supposed to camp out next to the pump so that I can catch it when its failing.
I just renewed my warranty with HSA! In the first year they covered repairs on my fridge, garage door, and 2 heating claims. Everything went so smoothly! The amount they paid to have just the fridge itself repaired was more than i paid for the warranty. Money well spent!
HSA claim process is so poor. I never got reimbursement from HSA. Don’t waste your money to buy HSA.
I filed a claim with the company for a couple issues I had after purchasing a home that was under warranty with them. The service company (Allied Service) came to look at the claims. The information he told me regarding the issues (as I was there for his entire visit)was not the same information he provided to the warranty company. Because of this, the warranty company denied all 3 of the claims siting “lack of maintenance”…of which I had no control what maintenance the previos owner did, and I also disagree that the problems I had with the dishwasher and boiler was due to lack of maintenance. I called the warranty company to discuss the issues and they told me to contact the service company, which I also did. The owner Brian was the person I was dealing with. I called him a couple times to talk about the claim, and he basically told me he can’t change what he told them (even though I completely disagree with his report) and he basically hung up on me saying he’d call back, which he didn’t. So, I called again, only to be told he was busy and would call me back, which again he did not do. I will be calling both companies again as I asked the warranty company if there is any pre-inspection prior to issuing the warranties (which they wouldn’ve then said whether the appliances and boiler would indeed be covered, as the warranty contributed to the purchase negotiations of the house) and that basically the warranty is useless and a waste of money and they do not care. I am looking into further action that I can pursue against both the warranty company and service company as they say they use him often and I can see that he issues wrongful reports to the benefit of the warranty company so they do not have to pay out claims. DO NOT purchase a warranty from this company as it’s a waste of money and useless.
My built-in convection microwave went out and needs to be replaced. The Sears unit they want to replace it with is not suitable for built-in applications (counter top only). HSA thinks just because a generic trim kit is available that there’s no problem putting it in the cabinet. I went to a Sears store and then contacted their “Blue Crew” via phone and both confirmed that it was NOT suitable for built-in applications.
After 6 lengthy phone conversations with HSA, they are sticking by the Sears model. The fact that it is not approved for built-in applications is like the pink elephant that they just will not acknowledge. I am completely frustrated by their apparent denial. They keep quoting that they only have to match comparative features and function. They apparently don’t comprehend that the design specifications meeting the safe usage requirements is the most important “feature” of all.
The cheapest convection model available that can be used in a built-in application is about $200 more. I suspect this is due to the additional features that let it be installed in a cabinet. I would think that a convection model creates a lot more heat and proper ventilation is of a greater importance. I asked them if they put in writing that they are over riding the manufacture’s recommendations and they went straight in to CYA mode and stated that “we can not be responsible for the use of the appliance once delivered”.
On the last phone conversation with a supervisor, I told them I still felt this was unacceptable and I wanted to know about mediation prospects. I was then told that the claim should not have been paid in the first place but they were going to do me a favor and still honor it. Now I feel they are trying subtly to scare me away so I’ll just take what they offer.
The main point is, I will have to spend over $200 of my own money just to get the minimum working solution to my problem. I am not talking about an upgrade , but a usage requirement (this would be like them trying to replace rated safety glasses with cheap dollar store sunglasses – yes they’d fit on your face, but would not be approved for impact resistance).
This company is a joke, we have a 22 year old boiler system in our house as our ONLY source of heat, the boiler stopped working on Tuesday morning, I called a repair man (not through the home warranty initially, because I was just trying to get someone there ASAP) he came and couldn’t repair, another repairman came back on Wednesday and said the boiler wasn’t holding water and he didn’t know why, but he suspected a pipe leak under the house in the slab. At which point we called our home warranty and informed them what was going on. The representative we initially spoke with attempted to be helpful, so we thought. We had to have their repair man come out and tell us the same thing the prior two already had. That the boiler wasn’t holding water which we already knew. But we paid their deductible, and went by their rules. The last 2 repair men both told us the boiler would be a very expensive fix and we could just install a heat pak into our central AC unit for about a $1,000 less and it would be much quicker for us.
At this point it was 11, (yes 11) degrees outside, I am 9 months pregnant, and it was 44 degrees in our house. This company tried to force us to have a leak detection company come out to find the leak, then have the floor jack hammered up to find out why the pipe was leaking. But they wouldn’t pay for the jack hammering or repair of the floor, and proceeded to tell me if the leak was caused by “misuse or abuse” of the system, then it wouldn’t be covered. When I asked the rep how exactly I could possibly “abuse or misuse” a pipe under the concrete floor, or my boiler system for that matter, she couldn’t give me an answer. She merely kept repeating herself and reading the contract.
At this point we were coming up on day 3 with no heat in our house, and they agreed to pay $400 toward a forced heating system, when they said we were covered for $1500 toward the boiler. When I asked why they would pay only $400 toward the cheaper, more efficient, and quicker option, I was told to take it or leave it, but if I chose that option it would make any and all coverage of the boiler null and void. Two hours later we found that the forced air couldn’t be installed in our central air unit because they didn’t make that model anymore.
So I called back and said we needed to go ahead with the leak detection company. At that point I was told that payment to the leak detection company couldn’t be guaranteed until they find out why the pipe is leaking, but that couldn’t happen until the leak was located…..I was also informed that they don’t cover frozen pipes, so if our pipes froze and busted (due to them dragging their feet) that it would not be covered…..AGAIN, I’M 9 MONTHS PREGNANT, and they didn’t care at all…..
They refused payment to the leak detection company, which meant our leak couldn’t be repaired, and they wouldn’t pay anything….again, not caring one bit that there could be a newborn in the house at any time. And they also proceeded to tell me that the contract couldn’t be cancelled and that they would continue to take my money and not pay for anything at all, EVER! This company is a HUGE scam, and I will make sure to tell everyone I encounter NOT to waste their money on this joke of a “warranty” and I use that term loosely…..
Shopping for a different warranty company. HSA Policy came with home purchase, upgraded to 7*, supposed top of the line policy only to find that way too many things are just not covered, so much for “peace of mind” home purchase!
I had a huge icicle in my freezer. The icemaker was not working as well. I called in, they sent someone to check out the freezer. They ordered a part, came back and putit in freezer and said that it should be fixed. No, it didn’t fix it. Same problem. When I called in I said that my freezer was the same way, huge icicle in freezer and ice maker was not working. This time however, since I said the word “Ice maker”, they will not come out and fix the problem, because they say that now it has to do with my ice maker. Now, your company will not fix my problem. Not very happy, very disappointed in your company. Just a waste of money, I will make sure that I will let everyone know NOT to purchase any warranty program when buying a home. Maybe you should be on “undercover boss” tv program so that you can really understand your company.
Bought the “complete” package, supposed to cover everything. 3 weeks later refrigerator breaks down. HSA claims that they did not have a technician in the area, told us to find our own, we did, once they got a copy of the parts price, they denied coverage.
We realized that we had been scammed, tried to get our money back, since we Were only 3 weeks in, HSA laughed, and told us we were SOL. No refunds. Please DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I MADE, USE ANY OTHER COMPANY THAN HSA.
HSA is crap! I fied a claim for the electronic air cleaner on my furnace. They denied it because they don’t think it’s part of the heating system. It is the same thing as a paper filter on your furnace, if it doesn’t work eventually your furnace will go out. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH AN HSA WARRANTY!!!!
DO NOT BUY IF YOU ARE BUYING AN OLD HOUSE
I purchased my home in October 2009. My home is 50+ years old and therefore many parts of the home are as well. However when I moved in, everything was working perfectly and i had both a structural inspection and regular home inspection performed and approved.
I have hot water radiator heating (temperature heating) in the house and last winter I accidentally switched off the emergency shutoff. I called HSA before I knew what the problem was for the claim, and then a plumbing company came out, flipped the switch, and charged me $80 – problem solved.
I recently had my hot water heater (running water) break and need replacing. Hoop Number 1, the claim from last winter was put in as “Water Heater” even though it was the boiler and a completely different system than the hot running water heater in the house. I had to call that company and luckily they had a receipt which explained the boiler emergency shutoff switch was off.
Hoop Number 2, HSA agreed I was covered and sent someone out to the house to look at the broken water heater. They determined it needed replacing and then went on to tell me that the cost of bringing the piping around the heater to code is not included. Hot water heater covered for $350, cost to bring to code $650! What the heck! I told them I will do it myself and take the cashout which was $432. I was told I would get the money in 21 days…..
I then had a family friend help me with installing the new heater. The new heater cost $350, the family friend charged just $100.
A week and a half later I get a letter saying they need the invoice from the hot water heater. I am then told they will only cover the price of the hot water heater and not for my friends time. So after all this, I am getting $350 (maybe someday), for only the cost of the water heater. Not worth the trouble.
I’ve been with HSA for a year now and had to place 2 claims (apparently the heating/cooling units that were put in my new home are crap!). The company sent to repair the heating on each unit (one went out last winter, and one this winter) was called Service Solutions and they were great. The problem wasn’t fixed the first time on one unit, but they came right back and fixed it again at no additional fee to me. The second time, the guy arrived very promptly and had it fixed within half an hour. I highly recommend Service Solutions! As for HSA, they contact the repair companies right away, so I’ve been happy so far. My only complaint is that the renewal premium has gone up a little over $100. I know its standard, but they want me to pay $567. I’m considering other companies due to price, but overall I’ve been very happy with HSA.
I have now been without A/C for 3 weeks. The service company chosen by HSA came out the first time (late) and listed several parts( condenser fan motor, capacitor, new fan blade) that needed replacing on their service order. They said the parts needed ordering and they would call me to reschedule. At that time I called HSA to see how much additional it would cost to replace my AC unit since it is 25 years old. They said the service company only quoted them the fan motor and they would only pay $185. So I said ok, let’s just fix it then since the cost of the part was so low. It took another week and a half to get the service company back out to fix the unit (late again). When they left the first time the tech told me he had disconnected the wires and turned the outside power off. Well, when the tech came back he said he could not get the condenser to turn back on, that the wires were frayed when he tried to reconnect them. I said ok, what does that mean? He said well I have to talk to HSA and they will probably replace the unit. He did not provide any paperwork to me. That was a Friday morning. I called HSA Friday evening since I had not heard anything and they said they had not been able to get information from the tech and they would have it first thing Monday morning. Monday noon I called after another 3 days without AC and was told they still had not received info from the tech but had called the service company and would be getting the information that day for sure and would call me. At 7pm I called still having no communication from HSA. They told me they were unable to get the service company to call them back. They asked that I call the service company the next day to ask them to call HSA and give the info. I thought this was odd since this was their company and they should be following up. I asked the adjustor if another company could be used since this one was taking forever. He said it would cause another delay so just call the service company and then call HSA to make sure they had heard from the service company. I called the service company the next morning who claimed they had spoken with HSA twice the previous day and I asked them to confirm since I had spoken with HSA at 7pm and they claimed to have spoken with them at 8:30-9pm which is weird since outside of business hours. I then called HSA who said they had not heard from them and put me on hold. They then came back on the line and said they talked to the service company and the tech said I had turned the unit on at some point in between service calls which caused the compressor to quit and this would not be covered because “not normal wear and tear”. How??! How would I have turned it on if the wires were disconnected and the power was shut off? The tech himself couldn’t get the wires on supposedly! Bull. But HSA says is a case of He said, She said, and they have to go with the professional diagnosis. Needless to say this is a completely fraudulent company who uses BS “professionals”. Don’t ever get a warranty with them. It is throwing your money away.
I will be filing complaints on the service company and HSA with the BBB and Georgia’s governor’s office of consumer affairs.
I was limited to a choice of one company to repair my appliance and when I called that company the closest available appointment was over a week from the date I called. This is not acceptable.
Shortly after my home purchase, I had a new filter being placed on the furnace due to a having a newborn and an older home. My licensed contractor detected carbon monoxide coming from the furnace as part of a courtesy check and then discovered that two of the three heat exchangers were completely disfunctional with large cracks. Despite the fact that my licensed home inspector found the furnace to be in total satisfactory working order and that this was the only inspection of the furnace prior to the problem discovery, HSA has denied my claim referencing a pre-existing condition. The pre-existing condition just so happens to be the words of the contractor sent by HSA and only after the HSA contractor spoke to me knowing I would pursue the use of my own contractor to do the work. It makes you wonder that if the HSA contractor knew he would have received the work, then his story may have been quite a bit different. Needless to say, I am not finished pursuing this claim and will lean on the aid of state legislatures, the BBB, the Attorney General, the recommending realtor, etc. Like many others, what the heck did we pay for???
I had my A/C unit go out on the 30th. of Aug. Called HSA they sent out a repairman that I was not happy with because they did not come when they were suppose to. Call HSA about them they came out check the unit outside and said it had a leak and could be repaired. The one I had check the unit said it could not be repaired, so HSA sent out a 3rd company to get another opinion he said the unit had to be replaced as it was aluminum and it could not be welded.
HSA Replace both units the outside unit and because of the freon they had to replace the air handler inside. It cost me $90.00 out of pocket for the units to be removed which was well worth it. I switched companies and went to Sensible BIG MISTAKE.. BOY I AM GLAD I WENT BACK TO HSA.
HSA IS A GREAT COMPANY. SORRY SOME HAVE HAD PROBLEMS BUT I HAVE BEEN PLEASED WITH THERE SERVICE. HAVE HAD THEM FOR OVER 3 YEARS NOW
We bought an older home and in talking with the realtor she suggested this insurance policy since the house had been empty for a number of years. Were told that if for any reason something happened to the furnace/stove, ect. it would be repaired or replaced by HSA. Since then the central air needed repairing and the stove and furnace both quit. The only thing HSA has done for us is replace the stove. They will do nothing for the 2 larger items using the excuse of “improper installation”. These both were installed and have worked for over 10 years. Wonder how if they weren’t installed correctly. Now, after paying for the insurance we still need to come up with the money to replace the air conditioner and furnace. The premium we paid was basically a waste of money.
This is my second claim and they told me that i could use any licensed company just submit the invoice and I did …my first claim on a fridge took a week to get repaired bec I used their tech. the second incident on my well warranted faster action ….they have a hidden requirement that you have to call them back to inform them about the chosen company,…which I was not informed about…they are denying my $850.0 claim for a well pump that needed to be replaced simply because it was underground for 20 years and quit working…I am contmeplating legal advice simply bec. it is soo unfair…you buy these policies and think you can sleep good but what a farce…if the CEO cares please call me and talk about it I am in northeast Ohio and the claim was for a well pump cost $850.00 ….on 9-14.
