Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights
This company is now defunct. NY Attorney General has won the lawsuit against this company. If you were a customer, you might be eligible to receive the proceedings from the settlement. For more details read the following article: NY AG wins lawsuit against National Home Protection

Response to Donald Walker:
I work for National Home Protection. I want to clear a few things up.
First, we are not United Home Warranty.
Second, we have not changed our name to National Home Warranty.
Third, we are not being investigated for fraud by any government agency.
Fourth, there is a link to our terms of coverage on every page of our website. Your claim that salesperson forced you to purchase prior to allowing you to see the terms is clearly untrue.
Fifth, according to our records you did not call to cancel within the 30 day time frame.
Sixth, you didn’t receive your home depot rebates because you disputed payment on your account.
If you have any additional questions please email me @ JBradbury@NationalHomeProtection.com
THIS COMPANY IS CLEARLY A FRAUDULENT FIRM. I HAVE REQUIRED TWO SERVICE CALLS, ONE FOR MY A/C WHICH THEIR CONTACTOR WOULD NOT GET AUTHORIZATION TO FIX BECAUSE THE PIECE MAY HAVE BEEN UNDER WARRANTY AND HE WOULDN’T GET REIMBURSED. THE OTHER FOR A GARBAGE DISPOSAL. THEY GAVE ME THE NUMBER TO 7 DIFFERENT PLUMBING AND APPLIANCE COMPANIES NONE OF THEM COULD REPAIR AND/OR REPLACE. SOME OF THEM SAID THEY NEVER GET PAID FROM NHP. I STOPPED PAYMENT ON MY AMEX BUT THEY HAVE A NO CANCEL CLAUSE. I AM WRITTING TO BBB, CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND ATTORNEY GENERAL AND HOPE WE CAN CLOSE THESE CRIMINALS DOWN.
DO NOT SIGN UP WITH NHP! I wish I had read the other reviews for NHP before I signed up with them. I had trouble from the beginning getting the $50 Home Depot rebate offer. After submitting the “official rebate form” to them THREE times, I have never received the rebate. And trying to get a technician to fix my heater has been a nightmare. I was told by one technician that they no longer serve NHP because they have trouble getting paid. My advice to anyone is never, ever use this company. While the customer service people have been courteous on the phone and it is not their fault they work for such a shady company, the fact of the matter is that the company CEO is making a lot of money off of us and do not deliver what they promise,
The worst service possible. Refused to honor a claim. Came up with every excuss you could imagine. They are complete theives. I paid for a 5 year contract in advance and they did handle several claims but almost every contractor that came out was a complete mess up. They have left my home in worse shape than when they came out. The last straw was when they came out for the ac unit and I was told that it needed a new coil. They asked for another company to come out and they also said that it needed to be replaced. NHP never called us back and we sat in the Texas summer heat 9in the 90’s to 100’s) for over 6 weeks….. fortunately we have 3 units in our home so we did not die but we did have sweat a bit. All I can say is that they are rude, dishonest, liars, and theives that take your money and not live up to their end of the aggreement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used to have a policy with first american but after there lack of service no contractors available to come out i switch to national home protection and found a much better policy with the very best service anyone can ask for. i am a picky person when it comes to things like this but when reviewing there policy when i got they cover everything that makes the unit run which is something that other company just do not do plus when i spoke to Jeff Michaels (ext 7229) he knew what he was talking about and did not hesitate on anything i had a question about. All of you people do yourself a favor and go with a company that really covers claim call NHP and buy one of there policy thats one mistake you wont make
This company DOES eventually service your home – but the headache of getting them to come out in a timely manner, not giving you your free service calls or Home Depot cards is completely aggravating. I have had this company on a rental home for two years, and am still waiting for two free Home Depot cards and a $45 refund they said they would put right in the mail – to no avail. I will NOT renew with this company. They lie – look elsewhere for your home warranty.
What a ripoff. This company has more fine print on what is not covered that you do not find out about untill you call. They indicated 24/7 embergency coverage. Not true on hollidays and there 4 hour call back is a lie. After many messages, no call backs. If I could get my money back I would. Do not use this company as it is a ripoff.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY
On Aug 11, 2008 I contacted someone named Jeffrey at national home protection located in the city of New York City, NY: 42 West 38th Street 8th floor suite 800 New York, NY 10018. I have two properties in the State of California that I was considering home warranties for. I wanted to know if there were discounts for multiple properties. Jeffrey told me he had special pricing for multiple homes called the “realtor pack “which was 15% off quoted prices with a 45.00 Dollar service call deduction. He told me in order to receive these discounts I had to purchase a minimum three year policy. My main concern was what the policy exclusions were. I call it a policy because that’s how national home protection advertised their service on the internet as an insurance policy. I asked if I could review the policy first and Jeffrey told me that once I purchased the policy he would immediately e-mail me a copy of the policy to review and also send me a copy through the U.S. mail that I would receive in about three days, along with 300.00 Dollars in Home Depot gift cards (50.00 per property per year) that were part of a promotional link to their web site and that I had 30 days to review the policy before it went into effect and that I could cancel at any time and keep the gilt cards, and after 30 days I could cancel with a pro-rated refund .I then gave Jeffrey my credit card number over the phone to complete the purchase. On Aug 13, 2008 I checked my e-mail and had not received the policy from Jeffrey, I did receive an e-mail from someone named Victor Hakim Sales Manager at national home protection (nhp) who offered me the same so-called “realtor pack” deal (see attachment #B) that I had just purchased from jeffrey but without the requirements that I was subjected to earlier. I now realized I had been the victim of false and misleading business practices at nhp. On Aug 18, 2008 I finally received the (2) insurance policies. In the mail from nhp and after further review found that Jeffrey misrepresented the facts about their cancellation policies and promotions (I received no home Depot card nor could I cancel the policy at anytime). He clearly committed fraud over the phone. I immediately contacted nhp and spoke to someone who refused to give her name, about cancelling the policies. I was told my request was being forwarded to a manager for review and a decision would take 72 hours then someone would call me. On Aug 20, 2008 I sent two e-mails as a reply to victor hakim about dissatisfaction with nhp and demanded a full refund. I explained that Jeffrey had not explained the terms or conditions to me as stated in their policy, and that as I looked further into their company I found out that it was common for his employees to deceive the public. Further nhp does not make assurances that the public understands their cancellation policies, nor do they provide reasonable time to review or an opportunity sign their policies. My e-mails were never answered.
On Aug 20, 2008 I faxed to nhp a formal notice to cancel all policies and continued to call. All faxes were verified as received. On Aug 22, 2008 I called nhp and again spoke to someone who told me that my cancellation request was still being processed and my final call to nhp was on Aug 25, 2008 when I was told nhp will not accept my request to cancel the policies. It’s very clear based on the sampling of hundreds of complaints which I have enclosed with this letter that National home Protection engages in deceptive business practices to obtain their customers. Consider that fact that a policy that takes seven days to reach a customer via U.S. mail would be impossible to review with three day (72 hour) clause or the fact that nhp employees do not inform their customers of the importance of these conditions and assures that they fully understand them.
Nhp has an extensive history of deception and fraud and has an unsatisfactory rating with every known consumer protection agency, and was doing business under the name of United Home Warranty, and are currently under criminal investigation in the state of New Jersey for consumer fraud. They have now changed their name to National Home warranty and are currently doing business in the state of New York.
Their customers are being denied service for no reason, hundreds of customers never receiving their (Home Depot) promotions and cancellation requests denied.
I hope this information will encourage you to do what’s necessary to protect thousands of Americans from consumer fraud and deception by National home Protection as witnessed at:

I have been contacted by the New York Attorney general’s office requesting a sworn affidavit of my complaint. This is really good news, and anyone who has not contacted the Attorney General should do so now because I think something my start to happen, and the more complaints the better.
NY Attorney General (212-416-8300)
This is the worst company I have ever done business with. They make used car salesmen look ethical. NHP cancelled my service and still kept the money. When I disputed with the credit card they lied and said I could get a repair. When I tried to get a repair they said my warranty was cancelled. Now I am out $800 and am filing with the NY atty general to have action brought against them.
After over a year with this company, I submitted my first claim. Took 3 days for the tech to come out. Payed him the required amount and he started looking. Problem…pilot on heater won’t stay lit. His diagnosis, bad heat exchanger. The company promptly denied the claim. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, they would only give me the email address of their Dispute Department. I can’t get anyone from there to get back with me. Absolutely the worst company I have ever dealt with. They would get a 0 (zero) rating from me if it was available. This is a scam and the company is a FRAUD. Absolutely Pathetic!!!!
National home warranty is a FRAUD. Google National Home Warranty Fraud and see for yourself. They ripped me off (and thousands of others)
They denied my claim without properly explaning it. I never got the $50 Home Depot card they promised. When calling, they put you on hold for 30-50 minutes, and then transfer you again for another 30 minutes if you want a supervisor. They are not helpful, and will not cover a claim you put it. Do not use National Home Protection. They’re a bunch of crooks.
they will find a reason not to pay. They will take your money very fast. File a claim not so fast. They will not pay. Anything you think is covered, will be not get paid for due to age or some other reason. These people are panhandlers hired off the streets and should be put out of business and in prison for fraud.
They appear to be an old defunct company (which was being investigated for fraud) operating under a new name…at least according to this article:
http://www.nj.com/business/index.ssf/2008/04/warranty_firm_probed_for_fraud.html
NHP(National Home Protection) is by far, the worst service company I have ever dealt with. They DO NOT keep their promises, their service is horrible, and they don’t pay what they promise. What lured me in was thier $50 Home Depot card, which I never got. I have had multiple experiences where the contractor’s they use have to call in for approval because the repair needed is over $100 and the poor contractor has remailed on hold endlessly, never getting through, for me to then be told to use a different contractor, given an approval #, then having to pay that contractor and then, not get reimbursed for my out-of-pocket expenses. So effectively, I’ve paid for a contract that’s useless. Additionally, they DO NOT respond to emails or faxes. This is the 1st time I have ever wasted my time writing an opinion about any vendor on the internet, but it would be irresponsible of me to not try to warn others so they don’t get caught in the same mess. This company is not reliable and does not do what they promise. Not only did they cost me a substantial amount of money, they wasted hours of my time.
I have my doubts that this is even really a company. Talk about runaround. They are unprofessional, unorganized and will go to great lengths to not assist you, let alone fix your problem. Stay away from this company! They are the worst of the worst. I have had a home warranty company for the past 20 years and have never had any difficulties. Since I switched to National Home Protection, it’s been nothing but trouble. BUYER BEWARE!!!!
When I tried to use my warranty for a leak I got a lot of red tape, a dishonest contractor and rough treatment from the warranty company who ultimately denied my claim (for a leaking PVC pipe!) I was able to get them to reimburse me $100 of the $425 I spent having the leak repaired on my own – but they really should have covered the entire expense – with the exception of the deductible. I will not be renewing this policy!
I wish I had found this website BEFORE I signed on with National Home Protection. Now I am stuck with them for a year since they won’t let me out of my contract without a $250 cancellation fee. I have made 2 claims and both times the customer service was horrid. I had to call over 10 times each to get anything moving forward. In both cases, they only called me once. They paid one claim (finally) and denied the other claim. My main reason for giving them the worst rating possible is because of how much time I have had to invest to get anything done. It just shouldn’t be this difficult. Please whatever you do…don’t go with this company. I’m trapped with them until 6/24/09 (It’s on my calendar). Don’t make my same mistake.
they find any reason to deny your claim. don’t waste your money on them.
Do not choose this company by no means. I’ve called to have the refrigerator fixed and came up with excuses to pay only for a portion of the problem. When I had agreed to their terms, then they decided not to fix the refrigerator at all. Their customer service is pretty poor and they put you on hold without anybody answering thier phone. I can’t imagine a company like this providing services to homeowners. I will put a claim with the NY Attorney General.
Do not choose these guys no matter what. Tried using this in Michigan, they have contracted with very few repair companies, and when they cannot find one, they push everything back on you.
Example: After them telling me no-one was available to come out for 2 months…so they told me to get my own. Then when I did find one, and the work was done, they would not re-imburse the repair company, so the repair company came after me. For me, we had an issue with the computer on a stove, that needed to be replaced. They ended up giving us $212 for a replacement stove (original was $800). You are better going without rather than going with this company.
They are very unprofessional, uneducated and full of excuses. DO NOT USE THEM. I am canceling them today!
Please, never use this company. They are a complete scam. I never received the $50 gift card they promised. When I did have a plumbing claim, it took the contractor three days to arrive. The plumber they fixed dropped and broke toilet and flooded my bathroom and hallway. It ruined my flooring. They vacuumed up the water, dropped off a new toilet, but refused to pay for repairs. They even insisted I pay them an additional $300 for some other repair. Same day, my A/C went out. Took days for someone to arrive. I was told I need a new unit. Faxed over maintenance records and was denied stating I did not properly maintain my unit. Your better off just not keeping a warranty. You end up paying the monthly fee for the warranty, the service fee to the contractor, and then full price of the repair when they deny it.
This is a scam –this company does everything it can to avoid paying a claim from putting you on hold for 20 minutes at a time to claiming new rules that are only on their online contract–not the one they mail to you. Their employees can only read from a script unless you are talking with “a manager”–they demand more and more service background information to avoid having to really handle a claim. DO NOT EVER SEND ONE PENNY TO THIS COMPANY!!!!
I am new Home owner did a home inspection before purchase and everything was working. Our oven and dish washer stopped working after couple of weeks. They rejected the claim saying it is a preexisting condition with no more info.
