| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

Horrible service
they fixed my problems in a timely manner and made me smile the whole time throughout a horrible ordeal.
They have denied a claim that was clearly their responsibility to repair. I am unable to reach anyone with any power to override this decision.
they suck. Very rude customer service
The entire experience with Nationwide Home Warranty has been a nightmare, from extremely rude customer service to making excuses not to honor the contract. Even the technician said, I don’t know why they aren’t replacing this unit, any other Co. I work for would have…
called@7am for clogged toilet, got ans svc.11am called offfice to find out what tech is coming “i havent got to you yet, wait for call 3-4hrs.now 10pm never received a call.
will cancel contract.what good is con. if you dont get svc when needed.
I am glad we got this warranty through the purchase of our home (free for us), I wouldn’t pay anything for their service. Bad customer service, too many loopholes, and no guarantee. We’ll shop elsewhere. Buyer Beware!
Please tell anyone interested in buying a home warranty from Nationwide that they are a terrible, terrible company to work with. We have a toilet that is not functioning and needs to be replaced. They told us it was a pre-exiting condition, because we did not maintain the toilet. We live in a 20 year old home, that we bought 5 years ago, and certainly cleaned it every day. Certainly there would be wear and tear on any product you use in your home.
They are going to try and get out of any claim stating it is a pre-existing condition. Save yourself aggravation and do not buy a home warranty from them. If you do, you only have 3 days in which to cancel. After that they will charge you $200 to cancel. Terrible, terrible company.
water heater went out, and was replaced without too much hassle. was with other companies before this is one is best.
Very bad behaviour of the customer service people. They take your money and do nothing. Be careful.
I felt cheated, they have no customer service
I have NEVER dealt with such RUDE condecending people in my life. Don’t waste your money with this company. You are not covered AT ALL. I purchased an older condo who’s a/c unit went out. I was promised at the time of sell that it would be covered if damage. Therefore, didn’t deduct it from the price. EXCUSES EXCUSES, I need 25 years worth of maintenance records before they will cover. I don’t know about everyone else ….. does this make sense. The warranty company should inspect what they warranty.
They love taking your money – don’t want to provide service. PLEASE FIND ANOTHER COMPANY AND SAVE YOURSELF FRUSTRATION!!!
I agree with all the other bad reviews. The customer service is horrible. I had to call 2 times just to get service people out to my house. They didn’t make contact with any service people–I had to. Then the “claims supervisor” yelled at me, was very rude, and hung up on me. Then when I called back, he was very rude yet again. He told me my issue was pre-existing. It was not! This company is horrible.
These guys are thieves. They refused a valid replacement of our furnace as well. Stay away from them.
They try to get out of their contract, or make cash settlements instead of honoring their warranty… I have filed 2 claims with them, they have managed to do a partial settlement on both.
Please do yourself a favor and do not purchase a warranty from these scam artists!! Whoever put that review up there about how they made them smile must work for them, because you will not smile when dealing with this company. Save your money because if you sign up with them it will be lost and your claims will know where.
this company should be prosecuted for fraud, I waited three weeks for a repairman to come to my house after countless phone calls. Then they refused authorize the repair.
I had not even got service from this company yet. Had just got thru the purchasing part, given the billing information. Five minutes later, I get a call from a guy that was extremely rude and disrespectful. He said that I had I given him a debit or visa card. To me, what difference did it make, as long as they got their money. He proceeded to talk very very nasty to me. I called back because it bothered me so much. Then I was told that I WAS SPEAKING TO THE OWNER, John Ryan, which was the same person…EXTREMELY RUDE AND OBNOXIOUS. This is the worst service that I have EVER had. He proceeded to tell me to keep my funky 45.00 “B”, because by the time, I decided to cancel. DO NOT GET SERVICE WITH THIS COMPANY. If he is an owner, God help us all. HORRIBLE…I WAS LITERALLY SHAKING AFTER THIS CALL. I went with a different company who was absolutely wonderful. I owe several properties and wanted coverage on them. HORRIBLE experience.
After reading about how this company had a lot of complaints. I cancelled my order within 3 hours after buying a policy with Nationwide Home Warrenty, this happened last Nov.07…They told me they would credit my Visa account.(They never did credit my Visa account)! This was over five months ago and I’m still dealing with my credit card company…These people are running a scam!
I have had this company for 2 months. My first serivce was the air conditioner. The compesser went out, it’s 10 years old. Nationwide said they can’t do any work until I give them maintance records. When I talked to Brian about it, is was sooooo rude and unlprofessional you would think he was a 16 year old. Now I have to track down records. AHS never asked me for anything, they always did the work, no questions asked.
THIS COMPANY IS TERRIBLE! We have had our contract with Nationwide since July of 2007, thank goodness it’s almost over with. We have had two occasions to call them and both times have been major headaches.
The first was due to a malfunction with our A/C. We called them to schedule a service tech to come out and asses. Tech came out looked it over and called Nationwide to report the problem. Tech was told that he would get a call back in 30 minutes. After an hour of waiting I made several calls as well as the tech and only got excuses and voicemail. Had to pay for the repair out of my own pocket as it was Friday afternoon in the middle of summer, we live in TEXAS with concurrent days of 100 degree heat. Finally got reimbursed form Nationwide but still not a pleasant experience.
Most recent experience (today) has not been any better. We experienced partial electrical service in our home Monday afternoon. It is now Friday afternoon and was just told the problem would not be covered because the repair involved bringing the electrical up to local code requirements. I told them I understand that the charges related to code issues would not be covered and that I was only asking them to cover the cost of the actual repair. I was basically given several excuses as to why they were not covering the repair from the repair and the code issues were intertwined (even though the electricians gave two separate quotes for the repair and code issues) to it was a pre-existing condition. After a conversation with two very rude supervisors in the claims department I was told there was no one else I could speak with about my situation and they had other customers to take care of.
DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CONTRACTING WITH THIS COMPANY!
I wish I had read the comments section on this company and checked with BBB before I signed up with NATIONWIDE HOME WARRANTY. Should have stayed with the company I was with but was trying to save a few $$$$. Well you pay for what you get. I agree that they pass the “buck” when it comes time for service. They come up with every excuse in the book. You’re better off with another service company because if they have to review your claim, prior to sending out a technician, 9 times out of 10 it probably won’t be covered. I will tell everyone I know not to use this service. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND A NIGHTMARE!!! You’ll be better off going elsewhere. Hopefully the company’s senior management is taking heed to the complaints noted here.
This has to be the most poorly run company i have dealt with they never return phone calls or e-mails and the waiting time to get help is very poor they are a very unorganized company
This company is a scam… Called for A/C not working in Phoenix in 100 degree plus temps. Didn’t hear from anyone for 3 days, called again and they advised me to call the contractor that they have put in the repair request with myself to schedule appt. I tell them that it’s their contractor and I’d prefer they contact them again. So, another 2 days goes by and I call Nationwide again and again they ask me to call the company myself. When I called the contractor they had never been contacted but sent someone the next day. The contractor comes says the motor is burned out and it will cost $750 so he calls the company in front of me. They ask for a work order #, which there isn’t one because Nationwide never had contacted them, which I find out is part of their scam. Then I get on the phone and they say they need service records, etc. The A/C company advises me that they do this trick often and they’ve never heard of anyone being happy with their service from Nationwide. I’m a Real Estate Broker. A real Home Warranty Company doesn’t do this EVER! When I advise this to the idiot I’m speaking to at Nationwide he says “Fine.. If you want to be a big shot then we won’t cover anything for you!” So I paid the full amount myself. I’ll be turning them into the Better Business Bureau as soon as I finish this review but I wanted to make sure that no one looking for a Home Warranty plan makes the mistake of using this company. Honestly, this is not how home warranty companies treat customers.
This is not a company who has any intention of servicing or honoring their contracts. Incredibly rude. When I said I wanted to cancell the contract they said they would not do it.
This is nothing but a scam, to seperate you from your money.
I would like to know why these people haven’t been shut down for running a scam? After I made the mistake and gave them my credit card number, I realized after I hung up the phone, I was dealing with crooks…I called back and tried to cancel and was given a bad time…I then called my credit card company immediately, and told them the situation…Finally after five months, I got the charge officially taken off my card.
I doubt these people are even working in a office. They have no address, only a P.O. box number… Most likely they are working out of a garage or a private residence.
the service really does not exist. it all run around and not no knows anything. 3 + days for my freezer and it was not repaired. we waited 3+ days for our AC and so far no one has come out yet. the contractors do not seem to know who the home warrenty company really is. so we will look for some thing else. it had been a cat and mouse thing for 72 hrs with these incompetent people.
First time caller/user of this company and did not even get a call back for the problem reported after two weeks. No one answers the e-mail sent to them to explain why.
the only responce that I got was from the man selling the home warranty to me and he refered me to their customer service department(????).
Company is a joke and after getting thier money you will not hear from them again.
Complete scam company. Google the words “Scam” with “Nationwidehomewarranty” and be SHOCKED. I was. Of course, this was AFTER I gave them $500, and AFTER my entire A/C system blew up. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY. If you really want to experience the same thing, throw $500 out the window as you speed down the freeway. Both experiences will feel the same.
I wish I had checked this website before purchasing the home warranty from Nationwide Home Warranty. 15 days after the effective date of my policy my A/C unit compressor went out. I was told to fax copies of maintenance records to Mr. Brian Cooper, then after review would determine if they would cover the cost of the repair. I faxed records and never heard from Mr. Cooper. After sitting on hold and several disconnects I was told by a girl in claims that since the policy was only in effect 15 days after effective date and that the A/C contractor had reported it as preexisting it would not be covered. I spoke with the contractor and he told me that it was a lie. The only report was that the system’s compressor was broken and needed to be replaced or repaired.
When I was asked for a copy of the report from the A.C contractor from Nationwide I was denied. Don’t buy this warranty, they are scams and you are throwing away your money!! BEWARE!!!
I have been trying to get someone to repair my oven for over a week and have been receiving the most horrible customer service I have ever experienced in my life. The place I work places a high importance on good friendly customer service and I have received nothing but the run around with rude uncaring people. I will highly reccommend to go somewhere else for your home warranty. This is the worst $400 I have spent in my life. I have called 14 times and spoken with about as many people and nobody keeps a record of previous calls from you, nor your contractor. They even told me that my contractor lied to me and the conversation he told me he had with them, they said he never had and that he never called once. However, He has a record of the phone call.
I’ve been following these posts on this web site for the last seven months… I was scammed by this company last year too…I feel so bad for all of you who are now also victims of this crooked company.
I can’t figure out why they are still allowed to advertise their company on the web? The lesson we have all learned is to check companies out who advertise on the web first before buying anything from them.
The worst company EVER! They refuse to pay for any repairs! I have 6 contracts with them and all are automatically refused without recourse. I have tangled with both Brian Cooper and John Ryan. They are the same person I have reported them to the NY Insurance Fraud Investigations Unit. That’s what everyone should do to stop them from preying from unsuspecting persons.
A COMPLETE FRAUD!!
This is the WORST and most UNPROFESSIONAL company I have ever dealt with. Judging by the posts, I am not the only one who feels that way! Our central A/C broke in our house. We called Nationwide on Monday morning. Nationwide told us that a contractor would call us within 24-48 hours. Over 48 hours later, we did not receive a phone call. We called Nationwide again and the customer service rep was extremely rude and told us that a contractor would call us by the next morning. We waited another 48 hours – no phone call! We called Nationwide AGAIN. They told us that the contractor was not able to do the job and a new contractor would call us by Saturday morning. By Saturday evening, we gave up! I called Nationwide to cancel the claim and cancel our contract, and the customer service rep told me she couldn’t help me and that I had to call back on Monday at 10PM. What?!? When I persisted, the customer service rep YELLED at me! I asked to speak with the manager and she was just as disrespectful. Beware…do not do business with this company! This was the WORST experience I have ever had with a company.
Whoever wants to develop high blood pressure should take up a contract with this company. They are so unreliable and the customer service folks are so rude… I don’t even know what to say…….
Extremely rude, called me a filthy animal and that they don’t work with animals. Refused to provide me any service.
I placed a claim with NationWide Home Warranty on 7/15/08. My only water source is our well and we could not get water. A well company came out and said the deep well pump was dead. At first NationWide said they had authorized the company to replace it, however I had heard nothing from him, so I called. He said he had not received a FAX authorizing him to replace the pump. When I contact the claims supervisor she said I had to provide “maintenance records” on the pump or they wouldn’t pay. I told her deep well pumps are maintenance free. They are deep in the ground and only require electricity to work, which I have always provided, so I would have water! It is comparable to a lightbulb. You can’t maintain a lightbulb. When it dies, you replace it – same scenario. I told claims I had livestock that needed water and still I was turned down. I do not have the money to pay for a new well pump. Stay away from this company. It is the worse home warranty program I have ever run into.
One of the worst companies I ever dealt in my life. Nothing is covered when the need arises, they lie about almost everything (including the Home Depot rebate which never materialized), and customer service is rude.
They do not live up to their warranty. Their repair time is some times 30 – 40 days.
Then they tell the repairman to get a lower cost item, because their limit is $100.00, for the repair and the labor, for example, a ceiling fan,
Most of the women on the answering line are plesent, but only have control to issue a work order. It takes days and many phone calls to get, if any, results.
I was promised two free service calls per year, if I would purchase the contracts that day. I was also promised two free $50.00 gift cards for Home depot, that was in the contract, you must wait 60 days before your apply for them. How deceptive. They don’t tell you this. so when you apply for the free gift cards, you are turned down because you applied to soon.
I would never recomend National home protection. They dectful and uncareing.
I unfortuntely have a warranty with this company. My AC unit went out completely in mid July, with a 2 week old baby and a home which was reaching 93 degrees. I was informed to have the work done and submit the invoices, estimates and paperwork for reinbursement. I did everything I was asked, after 2 days I was informed that the work would NOT be covered. I asked over and over why and no one could ever give me a reason. I fulfilled everything in my contract, they on the other hand did not. Any one out there who is considering a home warranty company, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. They are a complete rip off.
I wish I had read this website before purchasing a Nationwide Home Warranty. I know I made a big mistake. The sales person (phone) responded quickly to my questions and gave all of the right answers. However, when the contract arrived, it had different information from what we discussed. When I called to complain and cancel, I was told that everything would be fixed and a new policy was emailed to me. I should have read it more thoroughly…because not EVERYTHING was fixed. Our a/c system stopped cooling – and we live in Florida – and 3 days after the service call, I still had no response. I ended up having to call their service company on my own to schedule repair. When the repair person came, he told me he wasn’t sure what the problem was – either I needed cools cleaned or there was a refrigerant leak. He told me he could not check for the leak because that would require a seperate call – meaning I would have to pay him another $50 fee for the visit. He also told me he was trained to look at my neighborhood and inside furnishings when determining what to “sell” me to fix my a/c problem. I could go on and on about this whole ordeal – it was awful. Does anyone know how I can get out of the Nationwide scam? They are billing me monthly – paid directly from my credit card. We purchased a new a/c system after a reputable company (we chose and paid for) came out and diagnosed the real problem. NATIONWIDE IS A SCAM
Wow, just stamp ass on my head. I wish I would have seen this review page before getting service through this company. I have been documenting every phone call and every name of every manager I have spoken with for the past month. I am sure I know their work schedule better than they do. Air conditioning unit is out and has been out for a month with no resolve. They were quick to send someone to service it but now that it requires real work they are procrastinating. Will contact BBB and a lawyer for breach of contract.

Hello.
This is the worst company EVER ! Picture this: Month of August in Georgia. My A/C goes out. I had been paying Nationwide for 5-6 months and this would have been my very first service call. I called Nationwide and they send out a company called Appliance Care ( very generic sounding name ) then I am told they will order the part but it takes a week to be received. I called a week later now they tell me there will be another week’s delay. I called Nationwide back to ask what they can do. They flat out refuse to give me the name of another company. I explain to them that it is the middle of August in Georgia. The reps seem not to care at all. They are devoid of human emotion. Because they do not seem to have a plan B I tell them that I want the automated debit stopped on my bank and to cancel the service….flat refusal. I talk to no less than 2 reps, a supervisor and a person in billing who can not empathize one iota with my situation. They make a point of telling me that I can not get any of my money back. I told them I would have my bank to do a stop payment on the automatic drafts…then they threaten to ruin my credit. They also refused to pay me back any of the money I have paid out in the last 6 months….They are so good at threats but they have rotten customer service and 0 empathy for my situation. I told them I am not in the business of giving out my money to charity and they have to earn my money month to month.
I am filing a complaint with BBB and my the Georgia Attorney General’s office.
Washer and dryer went bad due due to flooding from broken water hose to washer.
Plummer fixed the washer hoses fine.
Appliance person said the washer and dryer could not be used from the water damage of the broken hose. If I used them it could cause a serious fire. They told me to contact nationwide for replacement. Nationwide rudely told me they would not replace the washer and dryer and be reimbured on my contract.
A scam. They suck big time.
Wow, after reading these posts I feel like I just went through my ordeal again. I went through the very same thing with my pool motor. Paid the extra money to have my pool and hot tub added to my policy and they wanted service records for a fully enclosed pool motor. It’s like a “light bulb” no user servicable parts. I told the people this and they refused to fix it for me. I had to go to the contractor and get my pump, go get a new one myself and install it. I put in a claim for the cost of the pump and they paid me for that, but they had no intention of paying for a professional to do the work. THIS IS A SCAM. Now my AC is acting up and I know if I call them I will need heavy medication to make it through the ordeal. Still debating if I am even going to call them, or pay for it myself to save the wear and tear on my psyche.
ANYONE WHO IS CONSIDERING THIS COMPANY ~ DON’T DO IT!!!!!!!
Horrible Service!!! I called them 5 times to get my oven fixed and furnace. I never got a call back. Finally they said to just get it fixed and fax them the invoice. I did this 2 months ago and called today to see where my reimbursement check is and they said both claims have been denied. Then they put me on hold and never called back!!!
NationWide will say and do anything to get out of paying a claim, including lying and fabricating false information that can be proven false by examing the policy. I have coverage on a well pump motor with them and they will not pay. I have done without water in my home for weeks. They refuse to pay. Don’t waste your money on this company.
This company is a total scam. Run from this company. The told me my charge would be $250 but charged my credit card $400. They denied every claim because first they said I needed to show I maintained the appliance. When I showed them the records, they told me they don’t cover appliances that had repairs previously. People there are VERY rude and no one tells you anything. I never received a bill, a contract, nothing. They took my money and they are a scam. I filed charges with the state attorney. It is very easy to do and I suggest you do the same. Perhaps we can get a class action going.
This is the worst warranty company going. You pay and they don’t honor the contract. They lie to. I reported them to the BBB and they claim that I filed a claim with them exactly 30 days after the contract started. It was actually 2 months after and it wasn’t my fault my air broke. It broke on the 4th of July with a house full of people. Now Sept I ahd to fix it myself. The best is they were trying to tell me that I couldn’t cancel the policy because it was for a year. I am looking into taking them to court.
We contracted with Nationwide Home Warranty in order to protect our home against unforeseen breakdowns of our house systems and appliances.
Four months after paying for this service, we experienced problems with one of our air conditioners. I called Nationwide repeatedly for service and got a complete runaround. Nationwide refused to have a contractor come to our house stating the problem was a “pre-existing” problem. They said I faxed records showing our air conditioner was rusty, old and needed to be replaced. This is false. Our house was built in 2001. We have had our heating and air conditioning equipment cleaned, maintained and recently upgraded…on a semi-annual basis since we moved here.
We know, as do many other victims, that Nationwide Home Warranty is engaging in deceptive practices. I have found dozens of complaints about Nationwide Home Warranty on the internet. Many, including myself, have reported Nationwide to the Better Business Bureau and are talking about a Class Action suit. I know there are other people who have been deceived by Nationwide but have not posted their complaints on the Internet.
Nationwide offers a service, collects money, then fails to deliver, should you need the service. This company needs to be shutdown—after they pay us back!
BTW…I’ve filed a complaint with the BBB and the State of New York Attorney General. I hope other victims will do the same.
We have called for 3 weeks and nobody called. We called their # and they gave us the # of the plumber then we called them and they said they never heard from them. After 3 weeks of calling I asked for my money back and they told me that would never happen. I called the B.B.B. and they had nothing good to say about this alleged company. Best bet, get another warranty company.
i took out extra coverage and received no service i was told it was a preexiting condition i ended up out of pocket for the service call and the warrenty payments this is a very dishonest company choose another once they get your money they fix nothing and they will not stop debting out of your bank account.
I hope something is done about this company. I have read to many poor reviews for them to still be in business. Times are hard for everyone but that doesn’t give a company the right to take advantage of unsuspecting customers by providing a false sense of security. I too am trying to get my money back from this company. I purchased my 1 year contract on April 18, 2008 and I am fit to be tied with this company and their poor service. Every comment that was made is true about their rude, poor quality customer service. As a first time home buyer, I am thoroughly disappointed and praying that no other repaired are required until I can recover financially.
IF I COULD I WOULD GIVE THIS COMPANY A FLAT OUT ZERO!! THIS COMPANY TOOK MY MONEY AND I FILED ONE CLAIM IN THE SEVEN MONTHS THAT I HAVE HAD THE POLICY AND THEY HAVE PUT MY CLAIM ON HOLD, ASKING FOR MAINTENANCE RECORDS ON A WASHER. WHO HAS MAINTENANCE RECORDS FOR A WASHER. THEY TOOK TWO WEEKS TO PROCESS MY CLAIM AND ALMOST ANOTHER TWO OF CONSTANT CALLING FOR THEM TO PUT MY CLAIM ON HOLD. I ASKED TO SPEAK WITH SUPERVISORS THEY DO NOT HAVE ONE OR A PERSON YOU CAN SPEAK WITH ABOUT COMPLAINTS. TO TOP IT OFF THEY WILL NOT REFUND MY MONEY! I AM REALLY UP A CREEK WITHOUT THE PADDLE. I AM JUST STUCK.
TOTAL SCAM..THIS IS THE WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER DELT WITH..NOTHING IS COVERED ,NO REFUNDS,NO MONEY BACK AND NO REPAIRS WILL BE MADE
I wish I had found this website BEFORE I signed on with National Home Protection. Now I am stuck with them for a year since they won’t let me out of my contract without a $250 cancellation fee. I have made 2 claims and both times the customer service was horrid. I had to call over 10 times each to get anything moving forward. In both cases, they only called me once. They paid one claim (finally) and denied the other claim. My main reason for giving them the worst rating possible is because of how much time I have had to invest to get anything done. It just shouldn’t be this difficult. Please whatever you do…don’t go with this company. I’m trapped with them until 6/24/09 (It’s on my calendar). Don’t make my same mistake.
They are holding me hostage over two claims. Anyone up for a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT?
WORST COMPANY EVER! VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE! NEVER REPAIRED OUR OVEN PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS PART OF THE WARRANTY COVERAGE. DO NOT USE THEM OR BUY ANY SERVICES FROM THEM.
This company sucks!!its true..please do not buy their policy!I would rate them a ZERO.
I wished i had read all the above reviews..before i signed up for this company last month.
Their sales rep offered me a discount for signing up & was very sweet..they were laying a trap!
My clothes washer stopped functioning 3 weeks ago.i called Nationwide they sent out a technician on the same day .who collected the $50.& never called back.
i called Nationwide several times to be told that i need Maintainence records for the washer.
I thought, that is insane. i asked several different of their claims staff if they had records on their washers..they said “no” but then they dont have policys with that company.
they told me i signed up with them & it was my problem.
when i proved to them that my washing machine manufacturer does not require any maintainence..i sent them several faxes & calls, but all their rude & annoying claims staff were of no help. They changed their reason now saying that my washer had spoiled too soon after my policy started, they said it was a pre exisiting condition.I dont understand y they have a waiting period of 1 month then, instead they shld have had an inspector to come & check our appliances in the beginning of the contract.
I asked them to cancel my contract..only to find out that u are stuck with them.they do not refund any money!!
I feel so helpless…i wish some consumer organzition or court of law could help put Nationwide warranty out of business & refund all the frustrated customer’s hard earned money.
Kay, I’m sorry this happened to you…I feel I was one of the lucky one’s because I found this message board right after I bought a policy from them with my credit card. After reading these posts I realized immediately I was dealing with crooks and I needed to cancel immediately!
Nationwide was rude and refused to refund the credit to my credit card, even though I cancelled the policy 3 hours after I bought it.
It took my credit card company and lots of phone calls from me and a couple of letters to my credit card company and a total of four months… Nationwide Home Warrenty never got the money they tried to steal from me.
I have dealt with 3 other companies and Nationwide Warranty is by far the worst of the bunch.I will not renew my contract
WOW! I am sooo glad that I came to this website and read these reviews–soooo many–unbelievable…Thanks to everyone who posted comments, I greatly appreciate it! My situation is very strange–I have called this company 3 times and left messages with “claim workers” to call me back for a new policy…they don’t even have time to call me back to take my money! I knew that this must be a giant red flag, so I just googled them….I have learned a valuable lesson and must have a guardian angel protecting from this scam company! That’s pretty bad when a company is too busy to even sign u up!!! Now, my experience makes sense since I’ve read these comments–THANKS again to all!!
This company scammed us. They took our money, didn’t provide service, never gave us the $50 gift card that was promised. Rude. Do not do business with!
This company is a complete scam. If zero was an option, I’d rate them with all zeros. They are thieves and all of them should be all be put in federal eff-me-in-the-ass prison
Nationwide Home Warranty company totally sucks and I would definitely discourage anyone from purchasing a home warranty policy from these crooks.
I have an oven that needs repair. They did finally contact a repair company to contact me after days. The gentleman who came out was very professional and told me what was needed to get the oven operating again. He said he would call when he got the parts. I never heard from him again so I called Nationwide Home Warranty. They told me they had left me a message on my phone that I needed to fax them a maintenance report on the oven.
I told the customer servie dis-representative that I never received a call from Nationwide at all. She was very rude and said “oh yes you did!” I asked what number she called and it was not my phone number at all.
Then she insisted that I had to fax a maintenance report on the over. I told her I never had the oven worked on at all before so there was no maintenance report to send! She said that was their rule and if I didn’t fax the maintenance report Naitonwide would not cover the cost of the repairs!!!
My daughter has Nationwide also and she had an even worse experience than I did. She will also submit her comment about this POS company.
Nationwide Home Warranty totally sucks and with everyone participating in this survey I hope they go out of business for good!
I am very upset with this company. I called in a claim on the stove in the home. They were quick in assigning a contractor to go fix it, but once he said how much it would cost to repair (>500), they deemed it unrepairable. They are very hard to get a hold of on the phone. The advertise that if your appliance can’t be repaired, they will replace it. Well they said my stove in on backorder thru purchasing. I can either wait 12-15 weeks to get it (ha! try going 4 months without a working stove/range). Or, I can accept $167 to go buy one myself. This is a drop-in range so the cheapest I can even find is $700, not including installation. I can’t talk to a manager (have called 3 times and one is not available) I have emailed the disputes department, but they are not available by phone. No one cares to help me resolve this.
This warranty is a rip-off. They are happy to take your premium but good luck getting them to pay a claim. I am switching companies.
HORRIBLE company, can not talk to anyone, will not make repair for cracked toilet. RUDE people, will not even answer you call when they know your number, call from another and you get answered HMMM!!!! I don’t advise anyone to use this so called company! The plumber said he has never dealt with a company so bad. Their motto…. customer is always wrong.
I’m adding to my earlier review, after reading and learning more about this so called company. They don’t even deserve 1’s. Not that I will get anything but I will take them to small claims court just to try to keep this from happening to anyone else. Don’t sit there and do nothing consider court..don’t let them start another company under another name.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY
On Aug 11, 2008 I contacted someone named Jeffrey at national home protection located in the city of New York City, NY: 42 West 38th Street 8th floor suite 800 New York, NY 10018. I have two properties in the State of California that I was considering home warranties for. I wanted to know if there were discounts for multiple properties. Jeffrey told me he had special pricing for multiple homes called the “realtor pack “which was 15% off quoted prices with a 45.00 Dollar service call deduction. He told me in order to receive these discounts I had to purchase a minimum three year policy. My main concern was what the policy exclusions were. I call it a policy because that’s how national home protection advertised their service on the internet as an insurance policy. I asked if I could review the policy first and Jeffrey told me that once I purchased the policy he would immediately e-mail me a copy of the policy to review and also send me a copy through the U.S. mail that I would receive in about three days, along with 300.00 Dollars in Home Depot gift cards (50.00 per property per year) that were part of a promotional link to their web site and that I had 30 days to review the policy before it went into effect and that I could cancel at any time and keep the gilt cards, and after 30 days I could cancel with a pro-rated refund .I then gave Jeffrey my credit card number over the phone to complete the purchase. On Aug 13, 2008 I checked my e-mail and had not received the policy from Jeffrey, I did receive an e-mail from someone named Victor Hakim Sales Manager at national home protection (nhp) who offered me the same so-called “realtor pack” deal (see attachment #B) that I had just purchased from jeffrey but without the requirements that I was subjected to earlier. I now realized I had been the victim of false and misleading business practices at nhp. On Aug 18, 2008 I finally received the (2) insurance policies. In the mail from nhp and after further review found that Jeffrey misrepresented the facts about their cancellation policies and promotions (I received no home Depot card nor could I cancel the policy at anytime). He clearly committed fraud over the phone. I immediately contacted nhp and spoke to someone who refused to give her name, about cancelling the policies. I was told my request was being forwarded to a manager for review and a decision would take 72 hours then someone would call me. On Aug 20, 2008 I sent two e-mails as a reply to victor hakim about dissatisfaction with nhp and demanded a full refund. I explained that Jeffrey had not explained the terms or conditions to me as stated in their policy, and that as I looked further into their company I found out that it was common for his employees to deceive the public. Further nhp does not make assurances that the public understands their cancellation policies, nor do they provide reasonable time to review or an opportunity sign their policies. My e-mails were never answered.
On Aug 20, 2008 I faxed to nhp a formal notice to cancel all policies and continued to call. All faxes were verified as received. On Aug 22, 2008 I called nhp and again spoke to someone who told me that my cancellation request was still being processed and my final call to nhp was on Aug 25, 2008 when I was told nhp will not accept my request to cancel the policies. It’s very clear based on the sampling of hundreds of complaints which I have enclosed with this letter that National home Protection engages in deceptive business practices to obtain their customers. Consider that fact that a policy that takes seven days to reach a customer via U.S. mail would be impossible to review with three day (72 hour) clause or the fact that nhp employees do not inform their customers of the importance of these conditions and assures that they fully understand them.
Nhp has an extensive history of deception and fraud and has an unsatisfactory rating with every known consumer protection agency, and was doing business under the name of United Home Warranty, and are currently under criminal investigation in the state of New Jersey for consumer fraud. They have now changed their name to National Home warranty and are currently doing business in the state of New York.
Their customers are being denied service for no reason, hundreds of customers never receiving their (Home Depot) promotions and cancellation requests denied.
I hope this information will encourage you to do what’s necessary to protect thousands of Americans from consumer fraud and deception by National home Protection as witnessed at:

Guys, I very much appreciate everyone posting your complaints, they helped me make the decision not to purchase warranty thru them. Thanks for saving me the frustration and money!
I would like to sue in small claims court. Does anyone have a physical address for this company and/or any advice/success with suing them?
I agree with all the other bad reviews. All the representatives who answer the phone sound the same. Talk very rude if it’s not yelled or hung up. I waited two weeks for a plumbing company to come after countless phone calls. They’ll never initiate arrangement for any schedule. I need to call both Nationwide and the repair company by myself. After another two weeks waiting for the authorization of the repair, Nationwide said I need to provide the maintenance records then they’ll consider if I can get the authorization. My claim item is clothes dryer. The maintenance records need to be done by professional company not by myself doing the clean up every time after the using. I asked the person if she does the maintenance on her dryer. She just coldly said if I don’t have the records then I need to pay from my pocket and this is on our contract. I check my contract thoroughly, there isn’t any clause mentions about maintenance records. I don’t have any more energy arguing with them after almost a whole month fighting. I have to get things straiten out ASAP. So I decided spend my own money to fix the problem.
On 12/5/08, I found 2 charges on my credit card. Nationwide just charged me for 2 of my houses for renew contract without any notice. When I called, the billing person said I have 3 years contract with them. It’s not true. On my contract, it says I have to call them to renew it.
I hate to see other people suffer from the same thing. Nationwide is totally a fraud company. They shouldn’t keep running and cheating other people. I reported them to BBB, Complain.com and FTC (Federal Trade Commission). I also plan to report them to the New York State Attorney General. Please do so if you can. I don’t know if there’s any law can stop this kind of fraud. Hopefully it’ll finally get some attention by the authority if more people report on them.
Correction: The two renewal charge shows on my credit card statement is 11/2/08. Both my contracts are due on 12/27/08. ( The order date is 12/27/07 )
I’d like to sue them too. But they don’t have physical address and I’m in VA.
Wow! I wish I would have read all these reviews prior to purchasing a home warranty from Nationwide Home Warranty. I joined 1 year ago today and from what I can tell it looks like they have gotten worse as the year goes on. My heating unit in the attic is not working properly and they sent someone out to look at it. The repair man called Nationwide and was told that they needed to talk to me and they would call me within 24 hours and you all know that was a joke, I called them back 2 days later and was told that I needed to fax over maintance records, now mind you based on 3 different opnions no maintance in the world would have saved what was the problem on my unit. Finally, today I called and the girl said that it was denied because it is not the primary unit. My home is under 5,000 sq feet I just happen to have 2 units one in the garage and one in the attic. My arquement was why was I not told this prior to you sending someone out and I told them that this unit was in the attic and they were very aware that I had 2 units when I called them on October 23rd. My other complaint was who is the moron that takes this long to look over the maintance records and then tell you it’s not covered because I have 2 units. I really don’t know how these people sleep at night knowing what they are doing is wrong. You can tell that this is a scam because not one of the people that answers the phone wants to help you get service for your problem, if they were not all in this together their representatives who answer the phone would be more helpful. Stay away from NATIONWIDE HOME WARRANTY!!
BUYER BEWARE! Like Jodi mentions above, I wish I would have done more research before purchasing a home warranty from Nationwide. Like so many others, I have been defrauded by this company. They take your money with no intention of ever settling a claim.
They sent a technician out earlier this year for a water heater problem I was having. The tech diagnosed the immediate problem as a bad gas valve, but also said the unit should be replaced. He was instructed by Nationwide to just fix what needed to be fixed and when the unit went out they would take care of it then. Just last week the unit started to leak so I placed a claim. Nationwide has since denied the claim stating that the unit had already been worked on and that voided the warranty, despite the fact that it was their technician who worked on it.
These people are scam artists and I will be placing a claim with the AZ State Department of Insurance for fraud. I suggest anyone else having issues with this company do the same thing. Each state should have a department of insurance, and you place the claim with the office in the state that you live, not the state where Nationwide operates.
Good luck!!
Wow this is the worst company ever. i called for repair and when i called, the serviceman came out(only good thing). when the repair ended up being more than what the company wanted to pay they avoided paying for it and continue to cut me off on the phone and would continue to say “still under review”. it is now been over a month.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!! THEY WILL SCREW YOU!!!!!
Terrible company. Their own contractor said that the replaced item was a mechanical failure and was a non-maintenance item. The service rep that handled the claim denied it because I didn’t perform regular maintenance on the control…even after their contractor provided documentaion that YOU CAN’T PERFORM ANY TYPE OF REGULAR SERVICE on it. Buyer Beware – They will only deny your claim.
The contract contains too many hidden loopholes, which normal people won’t found out until they pay the non-refundable Service Call Fee AND leave the problems unfixed.
This is defintely a SCAM, save your money! I have had to deal with them 3 times, none pleasant, most of the time they don’t fix but they are quick to steal your money. Frankly don’t use any of them, the others were not much better, but this one is the WORST….My contract is up the end of January.
I have two contracts with Nationwide. Both will end on Dec 27, 2008. They charged me for renew on Nov 2, 2008 without any notice. I called on 11/6, 11/12, and 11/18, told them I don’t want to renew and I never authorized any automatic renew either. They said I’ll see the refund on my credit card in a couple of days. I waited until 11/25. No refund. I called again, they said my credit card company doesn’t allow refund if the charge is within 30 days. I called my credit card company, they never heard of such things. So I have to dispute the two transactions with my credit card company.
I’ve reported to BBB, Complain.com and FTC (Federal Trade Commission)on 11/6. Only received confirm emails of the reports. Is there any way we victims can do to get our money back or at least protect other people from suffer from them?
Karen, these people are crooks…They will never give you a refund on your credit card. I too was told I would get a refund within a couple of days…They lied! They had no intention of ever giving me a refund.
My credit card company had me file a dispute, and I won!
By the way I cancelled the policy with Nationwide Home Warranty immediately after I bought it, because I read these posts and realized I was dealing with con artists!
They sent me to two service providers for an electric range that didn’t work and both repair companies would not do work for them because they have never been paid on previous jobs. One company said they have been cheated out of $1200 for repairs made. They had no more service companies to give me and refused a refund. Have filed complaint with New York Attorney General Internet Bureau
I contacted Nationwide Home Warranty for the repair of a broken hot water heater. They arranged for a plumber to come to my house and diagnose the water heater. The plumber collected the $60 fee and told me he would contact Nationwide Home Warranty for their approval and Nationwide would be in contact. 48 hours later I still had not heard from Nationwide so I initiated contact with them. They advised that they needed records of “periodic” flushing performed by a qualified technician on my water heater. I ask them to define periodic, they could not answer specifically what periodic was but finally stated 1 to 2 months. Unfortunately I do not have the records of flushing my hot water tank. At that point I was advised I would have to arrange for the repair on my own and they would consider what, if any, they would pay for the repair. I submitted invoicing on November 24th as the unit broke on November 18th 2008. As of today, December 3, 2008 I have heard nothing from Nationwide Home Warranty. Very poor service and follow up.
I have had to deal with these idiots twice and both times the results are the same. First, this past summer my outside AC unit went out, it was the 4th of July and the temperature was around 100. I called the warranty company and they said someone would contact me within 48 hours, I told them that this is Texas and it’s 100 degrees can they get someone out ASAP. Well, I didn’t hear from anyone until the following Monday. I had a leak in the internal coil. So the tech called it in and was told to fix it. So he brings out a brand new unit, well he calls Nationwide and they say they won’t pay until I provide proper maintenance records. So I made the mistake of paying him and expecting to get the money back from Nationwide since I did have proper maintenance records. They told me that they would not pay because the unit showed signs of rust, I told them the unit was 11 years old and has been living outside all that time, of course it’s going to have some rust. Long story short after much arguing they coughed up less than half what I paid but I figured take the money and run. The tech called and had them take him off their list. Now I have a water line leading to my tub that broke, flooded one room and had to rip out all the carpet. They sent a tech and he said it was just worn out, and considering it was in a wall, brick on one side and tile on the other there was no way for me to know until we stepped in water. This was on Thursday, the tech came out on Friday, left a message with their afterhours because they had already left at 6:00 PM when they are supposed to be open until 7, he called me Saturday and said he still had not heard from them so I called them on Monday. They claimed he never called, I told them they were lying because I was standing right beside him when he called. So I called the tech, he called them then me and said they needed “paper work” from me. I knew right then they were going to try and weasel out of paying, and sure enough they said I needed to provide proper scheduled maintenance records for my plumbing. My plumbing, there isn’t any such thing, so I asked them what company they used to perform “proper scheduled maintenance” on their plumbing because I don’t know of any that will on schedule, tear down my walls, inspect the pipes, and replace the walls. They said I needed to show maintenance on my hot water tank, it’s up in my attic one thing has nothing to do with the other. Currently I am waiting to hear from the courts in New York so I can file a lawsuit, anyone want o jump on board feel free to contact me at jimabshire@att.net.
I’m truly sorry companies like this exist. I have a very small service company here in Tomball, TX and rely heavily on consumers to make my living. And with that in mind, I try very hard to provide the service I’m contracted to do. It’s just as easy to do the job right the first time and prevent any ill ease that may arrise when you have to do it again. I was a contractor for Nationwide Home Warranty until today. After having to deal with them on a couple of calls, I realized it was enough. I called them on the phone and asked to be taken off thier vendor list. Thier reply was,” Okay “. To me, a company void of emotion must be void of understanding. However, this company seems to get emotional when the consumers want thier money back. Yet they lack the ability to understand why. Or do they? I wish all of you the best of luck in your plight for justice. And to the aquaintences I’ve met through this company- I’m there for you.
America is considered a true land of opportunity. Companies like Nationwide Home Warranty (previously known as United Home Warranty, facing criminal/fraud litigation) are a bad spot in our society. Unfortunately, despite the fact hundreds like us get sucked into their dirty marketing tactics and buy home warranty policy with them only to feel sorry later, nothing gets done to stop companies like this from doing business and save other honest consumers from losing money and peace of mind. Unfortunately, I did not check this website before buying warranty with them, and ended up buying the policy with them on 03/11/2008. Like other consumers have noted above, they will not give you copy of their terms and conditions for review prior to placing the order and sell it you under the premise that their’s is the best warranty with fastet response etc. Anyhow, our Maytag Neptune Washer (MAH7500AWW), purchased in July 2002 was malfunctioneing (the touch screen that controls machine operation was not working) and so I contacted them by phone on 12/01/2008 at 5 AM, and they said within 24 hrs a certified mechanic will contact me. A mechanic finally called me and arrived at our home late evening on 12/04/2008. He trouble shooted the machine and determined that the control board needed to be replaced and that he had to come back with the parts next day. He was a gentleman, so I said to him that he can bring the parts tomorrow and fix the machine and in the interim he can leave the machine unassembled so he does not need to do that work again the next day. I also told him that I will pay him the deductable of $50 at that time. Next day he called me that the Nationwide won’t cover this under warranty and that they won’t pay him either for his visit. So on 12/05/08 I called Nationwide to determine the reasons for denial of claim. First the lady in Warranty (a Jennae Johnson) told me that my policy is on hold status because I didn’t pay the applicable deductable which I never denied. Upon my insistance that this was not the cause, she then told me that Nationwide is not responsible for repairs if there was rust around the water dispenser or anywhere else on the machine. Since then I have wasted over 5 hrs on phone chasing someone who will act to no avail. They keep on telling me that with reference to this section or that section of the policy the claim now or in the future will not be honored and the policy is permanent hold for any claims. When asked for the manager she said the buck stopped at her as she was the top gun at Nationwide, however, upon my insistence, I got connected to another rude lady, Marylin Rothshield touted as the department manager. Their sales department told me that James Craig is their president but all my efforts to connect to him have failed, so I wonder if this guy is a phantom. Obviously this outfit is a mafiasso to steal/rob you of your pocket and give you the kind of hassels you don’t deserve. If I had the time I will put the efforts to get this whole outfit closed and all its employees suffer in jail forever to mislead and cheat simple honest consumers. I only wish that someone has that time.
Beware of this outfit and protect your interests.
Regards,
My wife took a policy with these guys, sadly she was only going on the salesman and neither of us researched the company properly. Three months in to the contract we went to turn our heat on and it had given up.
We called Nationwide on December 1st. The service tech arrived on December 10th! They guarantee to have somebody out within 24 hours, we called many times during this period, and everybody in the service / claims department is very unhelpful, curt, and at times plain rude. The first contractor they sent the job to didn’t cover our area, it took 4 days for this to become apparent. The second contractor they sent the job to was no longer working for Nationwide, the third contractor did show up after we repeatedly called and demanded service as a cold front had moved in.
The contractor was good, did a good job and was very helpful.
However, the claim for $300 to replace a broken circuit board was “PUT ON HOLD” as we had to provide maintenance records showing we maintained the heating and A/C system on a MONTHLY BASIS! What would be the point of a warranty if I spent hundreds on proactive maintenance every month?
When I tried to address these issues, the claims people just reverted to their script and refused to put me on to a supervisor or manager. I have paid in two 6 month installments, so obviously I shall instruct my bank not to pay the second installment, as Nationwide tell me there is “NO CANCELLATION!”
I did have the luck to speak to one lady in the sales department who was helpful and polite, and took my information and said she would someone call me back. Refreshing change considering the service department put the phone down on you during a perfectly civil conversation!
When I speak to sales as a potential customer, they guarantee a 24 hour window to have a service tech on site and they state I do not have to provide receipts or records!
From having read these other comments, I shall be pursuing this matter with legal advice and I will intend to not pay any other monies, and shall attempt to obtain a refund. Luckily I have very good corporate legal insurance and as a matter of principal I shall commit much time and energy to this matter!!!
I paid $400.00 for my yearly contract in March 2008. I called, for the first time, to have Washer repaired, immediately the repair company called and came out, fixed washer, then had to call NHW in order to get approval for over $100. The NHW person told him the claim was not covered because of a misunderstanding between his explaination and the actual problem relayed to NHW, so I had to pay for the repair. Even the technician said they were wrong and he was going to tell his boss not to use this company anymore. I promptly called them and they said fax info to appeal board. I did, two weeks later I got an email saying they had reviewed my claim denial and it was a mistake and I would get immediate reimbursement. That was Nov 5, 2008, today is Dec 11, 2008 and I’ve still not gotten it. I have called 7 times, and gotten rude service, cut off several times and the run around, passing me from one person to another. One told me it’s “in process” and another said it was supposed to be processed within 3-6 business days. They are horrible at customer service…Their website says “Simply call us 24 hours a day at 1 (888) 500-2110 and experience our outstanding customer service for yourself. With multiple call centers across the country, our Customer Care representatives will show professionalism, dedication and concern for your very unique needs.” What A LIE!!!
Beware and never purchase this warranty!!!
I called for service, the customer service person took notes (he said he do not have access to my contract in the computer) and said their supervisor would call me back to give me instruction within 48 hours. Nerver happened. I called again, they take notes again. Never called me back. I called third time and asked to talk to their supervisor. the customer service person said No and only thing he could do was talking notes again. This company just cheat for money.
Another experience with this company. I called to confirm when my contract will expire. They told me a date (one year after I brought the contract). I said this is not correct. They transfer ny cal to three peoples, everyone told me same date. Then I indicate the date should be one year after effective date (which is 30 days after I brought the contract) by point to the exact statement in the contract. Then they agreed what I said. They either realy not know about the contract they selling or try to cheat again.
This is the WORST customer service I have ever experienced!! We had called NHW once after having the contract for about 9 months because our A/C kept turning on and off repeatedly. We never heard back and decided to fix it ourselves.
Recently, our water heater started leaking. We decided to give them another chance. Much to our surprise they actually sent out a technician to survey our claim. The technician said our water heater needed to be replaced and informed NHW. After not hearing anything back in three days, we called the technician back to ensure he told NHW. He confirmed he did and called NHW back on our behalf. NHW said they closed our claim!!!! We decided to call back ourselves to find out why our claim had been closed. We were then asked for maintenance records for our water heater. We provided the requested information via the fax number provided by the call center representative. We waited a few more days and did not hear anything back. We called again and were asked once more for our maintenance records. We told them that we had already faxed them over. We were then told that our claim was “under review” and that we should hear something back in 3-5 business days. We gave them 5 business days and called back. We were then asked again for our maintenance records. At this point we were beyond frustrated. We asked for an alternate fax number because the other one obviously was not working. We faxed the information over. We then waited on the phone and verified that the call center person received the fax. The call center person said she received the fax and that our claim would need to be reviewed and that the process would take a minimum of 15 business days. Our water heater has been leaking now for over two weeks!!!
This company is a SCAM!!! Review the above concurring comments from other frustrated consumers as well as the BBB’s comments. Do not waste your money. This company will take your money and offer you nothing but a hassle in return. Find a reliable company!
A total rip off. Stay away……. Don’t even call them!!!
Wanted mantance records for our plumbing. Couldn’t explain what kind of mantance was required for the plumbing!
I submitted a claim for a water heater problem. When the problem reoccured in less than 1 week, the repair company requested the replacement of the water heater, and they were given an authorization, which was put on hold. Nationwide then requested maintenance records from me. Since there had never been a problem with the water heater before, there were no maintenance records. Nationwide stated that without the records, I would have to pay out of pocket, they would review it, and then determine if they would reimburse. According to the plumbing service, this is the ploy they use not to pay for the repairs.
I have already written my complaint about this company and based on the many many complaints found on this website I suggest a “class action lawsuit” against Nationwide Home Warranty.
This company needs to go down!
Began paying Nationwide 37.33 in July 08. Made a claim on 12/13/2008 for a leaky faucet and explained I did not have my contract number…..call escalated to supervisor who did not return my call. Called again on 12/14..no return call. Called again 6 times on 12/15….no retrun call. Called again on 12/16…..no return call. Filed a complaint with BBB on 12/16. Called my bank on 12/17 to have all payments returned to me….they obliged. Called Nationwide to cancel on 12/18….call escalated to Michael Peterson (Billing Supervisor); he said I could not cancel and he was sending me to collections. I reitterated Nationwide no longer had permission to debit my account; Michael peterson continued to say he was sending to collections. I said thank you and good bye. What does it take to run a company with integrity? I wish I had researched available reviews before hand. Shame on Nationwide!
Sean, good for you for cancelling! These people are crooks and I doublt they will follow up with collections…They tried it with me and got no where.
I was happy my credit card company believed me when I told them Nationwide Home Warrenty was running a fraudulent company…My Credit Card company got my money back for me.
This is a scam and a rip-off type of home warranty,. They will trick
you with everything they have. Just call a plumbing company and they
will tell you about them…..I called a plumbing company that does work
with all kinds of home warranties across the nation, and they were
very helpful. They told me that this is a scam company, and they will
never pay for anything,……. their exact words were, stay away from
them…………………stay far away

Hi,
I have had a terrible time dealing with them on 2 occassions this year where in my AC broke down. Their modus operandi is to send out a contractor initially as you pay the trade fee for that and then deny the claim by frustrating you using every trick in the book. I have lodged a complaint with BBB of NY and I see numerous complaints against them. Such companies should be forced to shut down.
It is a scam.
They promised me the world before I had purchased the Home Warranty, swearing that the contract I was purchasing was different than the one that was online. Assuring me that I when I received the written contract in the mail, it would have all of the terms that the salesman went over in detail with me on the phone. The contract arrived in the mail 4 days later, and the contract was “non-cancelable” 3 days after they received the order. Since they have taken my money, they put me on terminal hold everytime I call, they do not respond to e-mails, they do not reply to letters and they don’t respond to telephone messages. I am looking to gather together enough people to attract an attorney to take on this company as a class action suit on contingency (no money up front, and only paid upon judgement or settlement). If interested, please call me: (646) 896-4545
My husband and I purchased a home and NationWide was already in place as the home warranty company, therefore we inherited the problems. NationWide has be discourteous, disrespectful, unprofessional and we will not, without a doubt renew our contract with them.
If there was a rating less than poor, this company would be rated accordingly. Used them one time and it was one of the worst customer service experiences ever. The claims staff is downright rude, including those who claimed to have been managers. They spend more time trying to find a way not to honor the claim, than investigation and resolving it. Our claim took nearly 1 month to process (despite their 24 hr turnaround claim), and the check was delayed by 2 weeks. Had to write a letter to the CEO and of course, never received a response. It was time consuming, frustrating and nothing worth it.
Please do not purchase any home warranty from this company. horrible customer service….a Rep called me a “Monkey”. this should tell you how bad it is.
Such a nightmare! I wish I read about all the complaints before buying the warranty from this company!!!
I bought a contract 5 months ago, made just one HVAC claim when it failed due to no fault of ours.
First they asked for the maintenance record. I had no idea what was needed and why they were asking now if they did not need before I purchased the warranty.
Fortunately, I had a service record that was from a repair 5-6 months earlier. I sent that and was promised a review decision in 7 days – then 2 days – then 5 days – then 2 days again – then management escalation on my insistence, etc. (They will never call you back; you need to be on their case. They would never announce the rep’s name as well so you cannot keep records for future reference.)
Then I wrote a strong letter; no response even then.
When I called back again, I was told the failure was due to a pre-existing condition. God only knows why and, perhaps, they know as well!
I went out and got the repair done at my cost! Imagine how cold is NJ in Jan and the HVAC repair has been waiting for the past 3+ months.
I am going to pursue legal option now.
DO NOT BUY ANY WARRANTY FROM THIS COMPANY!
IF ANY OF CURRENT + OLD CUSTOMERS WOULD LIKE TO PURSUE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT, PL. POST YOUR RESPOSNES. I WILL BE HAPPY TO CONTACT YOU AND AN ATTORNEY BASED ON THE VOLUME OF RESPONSE.
I was bitten by company’s prevailing cheating practices. The company is using all tricks for not repairing my roof and blaming me and the contractor. The company is not entitled to do business in California, and New York and I believe in all other states.
I have an street address for the company for the people ditched by nationwidehomewarranty.

We were unable to reach a supervisor after several calls, fax, email and letters with our concern. The email on their website went to another company. They called the contractor 4 times until they got the answer they wanted so they could deny our claim. Written document from the contractor stated the actual cause for replacement as a bad transmission, yet, they said they had a different verbal report and refused to esculate to a supervisor or replace the part. I do not recommend this company.
We had a cold break in Tampa and on when our heat pump. All of a sudden it started to blow the circuit breaker and shut down. We called for service and did get a repairman out in about 4 hours. He diagnosed the problem as a bad valve and said he would contact the Insurance co and get it repaired. He called me to say Nationwide refused to do anything, because I had turned the circuit breaker back on and the unit was running when he came to the house. He said when it blows again, do not touch the circuit breaker and call them at once to come out.It happend again and we did as he asked, and they came to the house. He finalized the problem as before and said they would order the part and get it done. He called back to say, he has “heard nothing from Nationwide”. I called them and was told they would do nothing until they received a Maintenance record on the unit to show I had performed proper upkeep. I had the unit serviced on Dec 22,2008 and it was in perfect operating condition, so I faxed the info to Nationwide.
I was then told ” it will take 10 to 14 days to process the information” so they would not authorize any work.
I am still waiting and it is cold.
They are a scam. DO NOT PURCHASE ANY INSURANCE FROM THESE FOLKS. THEY WILL NOT LET YOU CANCEL THE CONTRACT.
What can we DO?
We have had several home warranties over the last 10 years. Nationwide is the worst I have ever dealt with. They have refused almost every claim I ever called in. Latest one is with my oven. I have a GE Profile with a digital control panel. You have to push a button on the control panel to tell your oven what function to perform, like bake, broil or go into self clean mode. The self cleaning function would not work. They denied the claim first by saying that it was a cosmetic problem and that they don’t cover cosmetic issues. Then they tried to tell me it was because it was pre-exisiting. When they could come up with anything tangible to deny my claim with, they told me that they don’t cover knobs or buttons. I also have an issue going on right now with my pool pump. We have been calling for 2 weeks. No one can even tell us which pool company they have contracted this out too. Very bad service. On the bright side, the technician who cam out to look at my oven told me that there is a warranty company named “Allied” and that they have had good luck getting items covered or replaced. My warranty with Nationwide is up for renewal in April…HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA…….I’m giving Allied a call in March!
I was sucked into this company like others. Experience with the company is really frustrating.
Initiated a claim for my water heater, and waited for 3 days no contractor showed up. Called 3 times, they gave me a contractor’s name. Called the contractor, the contractor said they refused to do any work for this company as the company would not take care of its customers. Called the company 3 more times. They kept on saying that they were sending another contractor. Still no contractor showed up. I had to do the work myself. I wished I read the reviews here before I was scammed.
Please beware that this company will try to steal from you by charging your credit card for renewal without your consent.
This company is running a scam. I’ve called for service on a garbage disposal and refrigerator ice maker. Both times they refused service reasoning that I needed maintenance records or that it was not normal wear and tear. Who keeps maintenance records on a refrigerator? Let’s go for a class action suit. Let’s all call Robert Pfeffer at(646)896-4545 as he suggested on 1/4/09.
I have NEVER dealt with such RUDE condecending people in my life. Don’t waste your money with this company. You are not covered AT ALL. SCAM.
Took three days to get a contractor to my home. After the second day of waiting for the contractor, calling him and the warranty company, I found out that he didn’t want to deal with this warranty company. After several calls to the warranty company, they sent a different contractor who drove over 1 hour to get to my home. Cusomter service made it out to be my fault that They couldn’t get a contractor out to my home. Problem with connections to the hot water heater. They talked to the contractor and decided the repair would not be covered. Contractor said they “asked him a trick question”. After speaking with the customer service person while the contractor was at my home, I had to pay the initial fee to the contractor, then had to pay for the repair. Their customer service people are VERY rude, and did nothing to encourage me from staying with them. I have stopped all future premium payments to this company. The contractor who was here and fixed the problem will not have any dealings with them in the future either ! Nor will I !
I work with a plumbing service firm used by Nationwide (not any more I might add). This is the WORST home warranty company in existence. They will not cover any issues/problems a homeowner might have. They will find any excuse to claim a pre-existing condition. They will not pay their service providers even after they call in and get an approval to do work. We have gotten approval codes from their customer service (ha!ha!) representatives and submitted invoices for payments with all the correct information and they have still refused to pay us for work performed. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES EVER SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY. THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF ALWAYS!
I would give them a 0 rating if i could, these guys are thieves! i cant wait until my contract is over in august, i will go back to HMS warranty. also watch your credit card statement, i wouldnt put it past them to try to charge my credit card again come renewal time.
I have been waiting for two weeks for someone to come and repair my swimming pool equipment. Just called home warranty company again! I want a REFUND… DO NOT GO WITH THIS COMPANY.
I was very disappointed with this company. They charged my credit card 60 days prior to contract expiration when they stated that they will charge my card 30 days prior. Then it took them 1 month to receive the refund. When they said that I should get the refund in 10 business days, and in 10 days I did not receive the refund, I contacted them everyday until I finally received it. I didn’t understand why each day they said that I will receive the refund within 24 hours.
This company is a scam, and if you run into a problem, don’t expect any help from any of the NY agencies, they just seem to side with this HORRIBLE company. I am appauled at a number of things that they have done and I think it’s a CRIME that they publish this line on the internet….Nobody cares more about your peace of mind than Nationwide Home Warranty. Nationwide Home Warranty frees you from the stress, inconvenience and financial …
The week before Thanksgiving my hot water heater burst and they did not fix it, they were saying that I it was a pre-existing condition and I signed up for their warranty in February and this happened towards the end of November, they are CROOKS, and please don’t spend any money with them. After purchasing a contract for close to 500 dollars, I had to pay 800 out of pocket for a new hot water heater, that brings my real price to 1300 for a hot water heater. And the sad thing was I only used them one time during the year for a small problem that took one full month to fix and tons of calls at that. So save yourself the aggregation you would be better off throwing the money out the window than to give money to these CROOKS. NY state should be reported for allowing a company like this to stay in Business. The Attorney Generals office told me to hire an attorney, that is a joke, I am unemployed and don’t have the money to do that now.
Oh, and one more thing..My contract officially ended Jan 31st 2009. But do watch your credit card statement, they renewed me automatically, with no AUTHORIZATION. I had to file a dispute on my credit card for the partial charge, since I was on payments for this contract last year. So buyer beware, and frankly stay away from all of them. Our news reporters here in AZ say they are all no good, but Nationwide is the worst that I have ever seen, and they should not be in Business, that is a crime……
i am giving everyone a fair WARNING!! This company is very screwy! They give you the run around about not being covering you when clearly in the terms and conditions a problem should have been covered. I have had to fax in one piece of paper work 3 dfferent times because they always seem to “misplace” the paper. Customer Service was extremly rude and unhelpuful. They have taken our money for a year because we sign a contract with them but have yet to help us out with any problem! DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY AWAY TO THEIS CROOKED COMPANY!!
This company is a fraud, will not cover any thing in contract. did not renew contract but still charged
my credit card. I have filed two complaints with my credit card company about these charges without my consent. this company is the worse, will probably hire a attorney to sue this company for fraud.
I am taking the through arbitration. Time and time again, they were rude, dishonest, played a ton of games and of course denied claims. they refused to give me a physical address to take them to small claims court, but i finally found one and encourage EVERYONE who can to do the same. They need to go out of business…

Please report them to the BBB and the Attorney General’s Office. I know it takes time, but they need to be stopped
If I could rate this company a “0″ or “ZERO”, that is what I would rate it. They certainly don’t deserve even a “1″.
NATIONWIDE WILL DENY A CLAIM FOR ANY REASON THEY WANT! They request maintenance records on items that were in the home before purchasing,in which they know policy holders cannot produce something that doesn’t exist.
EXTREMELY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.HANG UPS,HOLD FOREVER,EVERYONE SAYS THEY ARE THE MANAGER/SUPERVISOR,CANNOT OBTAIN CORPORATION TELEPHONE NUMBER CLAIMING IT DOESN’T HAVE ONE, THEY HAVE A P.O.BOX AND NOT A PHYSICAL ADDRESS. There website misleads in several ways. For instance, it states that a first time home buyer doesn’t have any experience maintaining a home and can be reassured knowing items are covered.FALSE, BECAUSE THIS BUYER CAN’T PRODUCE MAINTENANCE RECORDS EITHER.
Be aware of there fine print in the contract. You will find much of your coverage will be null and void because you do not keep maintenence records on your home items. They did not honor an air conditioning repair because I did not have quarterly records on maintenence i.e. coil cleanings. Who has quarterly maintence done on there home AC. When I asked to speak to a manager I was connected to another service rep I had previously talked the day before who lied and told me they were the manager. I have been with two other home warranty companies from previously owned homes where that was never a requirement. They also automatically charged my credit card for another year two months prior to the expiration of the contract. I am currently waiting to be credited back for the charge. I can’t believe any legitemate customer would give this company a high rating. My biggest mistake was not looking them up on BBB; even though they do not belong to BBB they are known and rated poorly.
Nationwide Home Warranty is fraudulent.
They deflect coverage by stating that the necessary repairs are pre-existing conditions. I’ve dealt with them on two plumbing repairs, and they used the same scam routine in both instances. They’re customer service agents are rude unresponsive.
I’ve used a different home warranty company in the past that was very fair and professional. However, I decided to try Nationwide because of their lower rates. This was a big mistake on my part.
We are all in the same boat.I have the same experience. Called for my heat pump not functioning and have had nothing but the run around.
The rpair service could not get authorization and said I had to contact them. we did and were told ( like so many others) to provide documentation for maintenance.
We supplied the with the previous maintenance (done the mont before) and waited for a reply . None came, so we called. The clain was under review and we had to call back. The claim was denied “not enough records were provided” “needed more records to show maintenance was performed”. We had the yearly records for the past three years and faxed them off.
No reply from them.
When we called, it was still under advisement and nothing could be done.
This is a total sham!
Nationwide Home Warranty decided to go ahead and just charge our credit card to renew our contract, although the contract stated otherwise (only if we paid month to month could they renew). When my husband called to inquire as to why this happened, the customer service rep was very rude and stated that in the contract they were allowed to do that. To his husband had to talk over her and read the contract to her and told her where he was reading from. At that point, she finally looked something up and stopped arguing with him. Then she told him he had to call back because no one from billing was there.
My husband called several other times and spoke with the billing department and was told over and over that it would be refunded within 7-14 days, and then the last couple times within 48 hours. It has been over a month since the first promise to refund our money. We have actually had to contact our credit card company and tell them of the fraudulent charges, and are trying to have this resolved by going through them. We will never trust them again!
I have read many other complaints of this same type of thing.
This is the worst home warranty company. They are very very rude and have no problem taking your monthly fee however they make every excuse not to cover your broken item. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY AT ALL IT WILL BE A NIGHTMARE….GOOD LUCK
This is total fraud company. PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP. My Refrigerator was not working. I called Ntionwide and they sent someone. The compressor was not working. Nationwide said they need maintenance records. I do not have any records. who has it. They refused to do anything without maintenance records.I asked them to cancel my policy, they said that I can not do that also.
Please let me know how to get rid of this company.
I had many problems with this company (fraud). I live in California and contacted two agencies one in NY and one in California.
As to “How to get rid of this company?”. I simply stopped paying monthly premium to this company. I called the credit card, and they agreed to cancel and issue me a new one with a different number. Thus this fraud company was not able to deduct any money from my credit card. The company did send me few emails to call them back and in one case provided me with the name of the person to talk to. I called and they promised to hand over my account to collection agency. Which never happened.
In California this company is not entitled to business. The Dept of Ins. has informed that they are initiating action for this company “cease and desist.” What it means after it receives the notice it can not do business in California. I will continue to follow on the developments.
I do not think this company is registered in any state let along in New York. That is the reason no one can find a law suit agains the company. As a matter of fact the company is owned and operated outside the United States. What is more surprising; this fraud company is not only cheating the consumers but also the contractors. Hence, you will see no contractor wants to work with it. My contractor said the same.
