Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights
Note: This company may have sold warranties using the brand name Champion Home Warranty

This is the worst company I have ever done business with! They are thieves! Letters from the New York Consumers Affairs Dept. and letters from California State Attorney General’s Office written on my behalf have been repeatedly ignored. My many phone calls have been rebuffed–they will not even let you speak to anyone in authority. They steal your money: they took my credit info. from the previous year to buy a second year without my authorization and will not return the money. They never fixed my dishwasher. Each time they sent someone to try to repair it, I had to pay another service fee. Finally, I had to pay for my own plumber to do the job.
I to did not do a very good job of researching this company. I put in a claim and they assigned someone but the wrong company to handle the problem. So of course let’s pay another service charge and if you can get them to answer the phone good luck. I have tried for two day, first you are on hold for more than an hour and then yep you guessed it they hang up on you. Yes, of course you can email them, yes, that works almost as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fraud. that is all i can say.
I never received a contract in the mail or by e-mail. I cannot get an answer when I call to report a claim. I am placed on hold for long periods of time and when I hang up and call back, the call never connects. This company is not reliable and I will report them to the BBB, the Insurance Commissioner, and the Attorney General.
AVOID NATIONWIDE AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This company is a SCAM. I should have done more research and/or just stayed with Old Republic.
#1. Good luck getting someone to answer the phone. The ONLY way to get your call answered is to go through “sales” and then be transfered. You have a very strong chance that they will simply hang up on you.
#2. The policy is non-cancelable. That means they will keep your money no matter what.
#3. They WILL deny all claims over $100. We have tried twice to get them to fix two separate items an A/C and a disposal. Both were denied as “pre-existing”.
We used to have Old Republic. They were great and always took care of us EVERY TIME. Even though Nationwide was $100 cheaper than Old Republic on their quote, I have spent $100’s more on repairs because nationwide refuses my claims.
These guys are terrible. STAY AWAY.
I PAID FOR THE SERVICE AND PUT A CLAIM TO GET MY A/C REPAIRED AND THEY TURNED ME DOWN. THEY TOLD ME TO PUT SOME FREON IN IT SO IT COULD WORK.
When we purchased their insurance we were never told there was a 30 days wait period before you could file a claim. Our garbage disposal broke two weeks after we got insurance. That was when they told us we couldn’t file a claim for 30days. When we called back after the 30days, he told me that it is considered a pre-existing condition and it wasn’t covered. WE NEVER RECEIVE A SINGLE THING IN THE MAIL FROM THIS SUPPOSED COMPANY. NO CONTRACT INFO, NOTHING! THEY DEBITED MY ACCOUNT THE DAY I BOUGHT THIS INSURANCE. IN 5 WEEKS THEY DEBITED MY ACCOUNT 3 TIMES! When we called to complain the man was rude and not willing to explain the contract to us THAT WE NEVER RECEIVED. He however was willing to CANCEL OUR CONTRACT FOR US AND REFUSED A REFUND.
I, like a number of the customer reviews I have read on this post, purchased my home warranty with Nationwide without doing the appropriate amount of research. As of today, it has been nine days since I filed my claim with Nationwide and still have yet to be provided with a current valid contractor that works with Nationwide. In addition, I have had similiar experiences with respect to hold times, up to 45 minutes, only to ultimately disconnected without haven spoken to anyone. When I was able to speak with a representative, I was told that the information was being entered into the system so that a supervisor would contact me. To date, I have yet to receive that call. Finally, today when I called, I was told that they were still attempting to dispatch services as the contractors they had thus far contacted were all booked for two weeks. I explained that at this point, I have been waiting for nearly two weeks and that at the very least, even if my appointment was two weeks out, at least I would know that my claim was processed and my appliance would be serviced on a given date. Well, as it turns out, they did send me an e-mail post with information for a service company. However, like the first service company name they provided, this company also informed me that they did not know of Nationwide or contract with them.
In sum, I would suggest that people carefully research home warranty companies. I am frustrated with this company but more than that, I feel equallly frustrated with myself because I should know better…I work in the legal arena, which makes this all the more concerning. I know the steps that I am going to take to address this, but not every person who purchases a home warranty does and nor should they. We should be able to have an expectation that the terms of the contract will be honored. Nationwide makes some incredibly misleading and frankly dishonest representations about both the nature and the quality of the services they provide.
We’ve had nothing but trouble from this company. I’m working on something, but need some help. I’m out of town and need a copy of the original contract they sent out, or the terms and conditions. I think they changed these as of mid-June. If you can help me, please e-mail me at adkohlers@yahoo.com.
I hate this company!!! Consumers Beware! I have had nothing but problems with this company. I have been lied to and hung up on multiple times. Every time I call I wait on hold for ages and then get hung up on. I have been trying to get a stove looked at and it’s been 2 weeks already. when I do get a hold of anyone they tell me the same thing…. “someone will call within the next couple of hour.” I think they are a SCAM and wonder how they are still in business. I am still waiting to have my stove looked at and call them almost everyday to follow up and still no results.
I have spoke to a supervisor and that didn’t help.. The supervisors are just as bad as their customer/claims representatives. They tell you they will take care of it and guess what… yup, in a couple of days you have to call them back because no one calls.
I agree, this company is a scam. They are no better than thieves. I WISH I had done my research on this company. My first issue was with payment…I had requested monthly payments, and they debited my account for the full payment. I called 3 times to get it reversed, and they either wouldn’t return my calls or they told me they would do it and never did. I finally asked that they just refund my money, and then they said we were outside of the time period that I could get a refund.
Needless to say, it’s been one battle after the other. They seem to have a network of unethical contractors they work with, because the people come out and then tell you that the item is just fine. My clothes dryer sounds like it’s got a rock in it, and “it’s fine.” I paid him $60 for nothing.
I would NEVER, NEVER give these criminals my money again.
I wish I had read these reviews before purchasing this warranty plan. I agree with everyone else this was a terrible decision. THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE FROM NATIONWIDE HOME WARRANTY. They recently denied two claims because they want maintenance records. I purchased this home with these appliances, maintenance records were not provided. Who does that! They don’t tell you that of course when you are signing up. I reported it to the BBB of New York, I hope they close the company so no more people get SCAMMED!
Called (10)times to get fixed our Dishwasher,
Every time they gave different name of contractor to call and get appointment , and refused by all contractor to work for NATIONWIDE, as they don’t pay vendor’s invoices.
I lost my premium I paid to them without getting any services from this company.
I will suggest not to go with this company.
I will give overall rating Big “O”
I have called this company like 20 times. I posted a claim online 2 times. Typicall hold time is like 30 minutes and when yuo get someone the say someone will get back to you and they never do. I just called sales and they put me through to someone. They seem helpfull but I doub it. I will try and call my credit card to try and et a refund if I cant get someone here in one week. I would not recommend doing business with these peopel at all costs.
Why didn’t I do my research. I am convinced that this company is scam.
I believe this company is set up to rip their customers off.
I filed a claim because one of our garage doors had failed over a 2 day period. This company sent an electrician who looked at a bulb an said the unit needed to be replaced because the motor had burned out. I signed the report stating the motor had burned out and was told I would get a copy after it had been filed with your company and the work had been completed.
I received a call from the electrician the next day. He stated the claim had been denied because he was told my policy did not cover garage door openers. He added he would do the work for $250.00.
I called the company because my policy clearly showed we were covered if the motor failed. When I spoke to customer services rep, she told me we were turned down because the electrician had reported the motor had failed because of a power surge due to a lightning storm. They did not have this in writing. They said it was a “verbal” report. Of course the electrician denied saying any such thing. I insisted the idea of a power surge was wrong because the unit failed slowly, the second bulb in the unit still worked and the electrician did not remove the circuit board to see if it had been damaged. I was an electrician in the Navy.
The company refused to send another electrician and no one would give me anything in writing. The electrician blamed the company while the company blamed the electrician. I, as the customer, was stuck in the middle and felt seriously disregarded and ripped off.
I called another company who looked at the unit. It had not been damaged by a power surge. I was not operating properly because it was an unreliable, builder’s grade machine. It even worked when the second company plugged in and tested it. I had it replaced because I do not like unreliability.
I am convinced this company sent an electrician to tell them how to not pay my claim. We are extremely sorry we purchased their product and consider it money wasted. We will not renew next year and will report them to our HOA and friends.
THE WORST COMPANY EVER!!! I live in Florida, it was 95 degrees the day my A/C went out. It took them a week to get someone out. They found a small leak in the evaporator coil and Nationwide has denied my claim 3 times because I do not have Maintenance records from a licensed A/C company. I even got a letter from the company THEY sent out stating that our unit is one of the cleanest units they have seen. They do not pay their Tech’s either. The first co. they had me call told me they sill owed him from 2007 and he no longer does business with them and wished me luck in finding someone who would. The company that finally came out had never done work for them before. It has been over a month and the company said they still have not seen a dime. THEY RIP OFF EVERYONE FROM ALL SIDES!!
This company is irresponsible, customer service THE WORST.
I called them on my matter numerous times and every time they lied to me that problem will be resolved at once but it’s done nothing till today.
I will report them to Better Business Bereau.
THIS IS THE WORST HOME WARRANTY COMPANY OUT THERE!!! BUYER BEWARE. THEY WILL NOT COVER ANYTHING, AND ARE THE MOST UNPROFESSIONAL COMPANY THAT I HAVE EVER WORKED WITH.
SAVE YOUR MONEY AND PAY FOR YOUR OWN REPAIRS, BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE YOU DO ANYWAY.
CONCERNED X-CUSTOMER
I wish I had seen this site before I bought the insurance. Everything is true. We had a hot water heater go out on a 2nd home, and they started making excuses for not paying before a repairman showed up. After he did, they misconstrued his words and denied the claims. While my husband stood beside the repairman, they called back and explained where the “rust” was, and my husband was accused of lying and they hung up on him. This is after two weeks of dealing with them. I called numerous times, and they quit picking up the phone. I finally called sales and was able to get through again that way. STAY AWAY! I HAVE REPORTED THEM TO THE INSURANCE COMMISSIONERS OFFICE IN GEORGIA AND NEW YORK. Now, I’m looking to do more. I want an audit of how many claims they’ve paid, and I want to be the tipping point so people will find a better company.
Nationwide are crooks. 3 calls and all claims were rejected. I waited a year for the contract to cancel and they charged my American Express again. When it was disputed Nationwide claimed that it was a 2 yr contract and then my claim was denied. So, I opened it again and sent American Express the contract that states 1 year. They are billing from an aparment in NY and they are crooks. American Express needs to get it right.
I am in total agreement with everyone on this site. I have yet to have 1 claimed paid by Nationwide. I purchased a add on of my sprinkler system. I am having electrical problems. After 2 weeks trying to get the call assigned, the contractor reported that the electrical was bad and that rather than run all new wire which would cost a lot, he suggested that they instead replace with battery operated units. Nationwide first denied the claim via email stating that electrical was not covered. When I called back, they said that it was denied because battery repair was not covered. When I explained to them that my system is not battery operated, their repsonse was “we have to go by the contractors report” and denied that he suggested that as a repair alternative, not the cause of the problem. This is a terrible company. I have filed a complaint with NY BBB and Consumer Affairs. Any other suggestions? jschnabe@hotmail.com
After reading through all of these reviews I truly wish that I had NOT gone with Nationwide Home Warranty. Had an AC unit quit heating in a house that I rent that the tenants have two small children in TEXAS. It took more tha 48 hours to resolve this issue after countless phone calls and being placed on hold for a very long time, was hung up on and told that I cannot contact anyone like Mr. James Craig unless I sent an email with him mentioned in the subject line of the email. After reading these reviews I will not contact anyone at Nationwide but will contact the BBB as well as the attorney general of my state. I have had the EXACT same problems as everyone on here. Very rude people at the claims department with the exception of one person, who, within 5 minutes resolved my problem as any of the upper management persons could have done but they would not. DO NOT use this company. I am contacting the number posted in these reviews to get my money back. I am a real person with real problems with this company.
Called to report that my tenant had a plug toilet at 11am. 3 hours later my tenant calls to say he hadn’t heard from them. I called to find out what was happening, and they said they would contact the dispatcher, and I should expect a call. 2 hours later, still no call, no repair, and so I call again. They hang up on me (typical time before getting to speak to a human is 8-10 minutes on hold, listening to their ad boosting of their prompt reliable service!) I call again. By now I am really getting mad, having spent over an hour on the phone, and still getting the run around. At around 6pm I call again, getting someone who is very nice and apologetic, but really no help. She tries to contact the dept that can do something, but nobody answers the phone. She doesn’t seem surprised. She says it will take between 24 and 48 hours before I can expect assistance. I tell her my tenants have no working toilet. She expresses her apology, but there’s nothing she can do. What a worthless company.
I purchased a contract with Nationwide when my contract with First American was coming to a close. When I discussed all of the terms with the sales rep, I asked specific questions and he said yes to all of them, I even got additional coverage for light and faucet fixtures that I had not had before. I was told that I would receive a copy of my contract through email. Well it never came through, so I called and requested another copy be sent, still nothing. Three weeks later, I noticed a small leak near my hot water heater in the garage, but thought nothing of it. Two days later the leak became a small stream. I called the claims department and told them what was going on and requested another copy of my contract and to submit a claim. I was told that they could not submit my claim and that a claims supervisor would return my call. Six hours later and still no phone call, I called again and was told that they see I called and only requested a copy of my contract. Well I requested to submit a claim and that was “supposedly” done. I was told that a maintenance company would call me to set up an appointment. Two days later no call, so once again I called and spoke to a third person in the claims department. She told me that she had NO NOTES in the system that I called to submit a claim. WOW! She submitted my claim and I got a call that afternoon for an appointment the next day. I had my water heater replaced the previous year so it was brand new and I thought that was where the leak was coming from. The guy came over and found the leak behind the wall near the slab of my house. It was NOT under the slab, but he said he had to remove some of it to replace the pipe. Four hours later, the maintenance guy told me that would not honor the claim. I called and argued and was told that was not covered in my contract and I should have read it before I called. Well if I had received a contract that would have been a different story. I told them since I had not received or signed a contract, that I should be released, I was told I had 3 business days to do that. I called the states Consumer’s Affairs office and submitted a complaint. I was released out of my contract without a penalty but was only refunded for one month. I was forwarded a copy of their response to my complaint and it states that “Nationwide takes pride in their company name and we have to protect ourselves from those who only purchase a home warranty to fix previous problems (not in those exact words, but that’s a summary).” I was so furious, that I have written a letter to their supervisor expressing my opinion of their company. I will submit a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, even though they are not registered with them. They are very sorry and do not deliever on their word. STAY AWAY! FAR AWAY!
