| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

If you live in California, there is a warning from the California State Commissioner to not do business with this company.

Commissioner Poizner Warns Consumers About Home Warranty Scams Nationwide Home Warranties Attempting to Sell Policies Without License Commissioner Steve Poizner warned consumers that unscrupulous companies are scamming consumers and trying to sell home warranty policies in California without the proper license.
“Consumers rightly expect that legitimate claims will be paid expediently and fully,” said Commissioner Poizner. “There are unlicensed home warranty companies in the market scamming honest customers. If there is any doubt at all about a company trying to sell insurance, people should contact the Department of Insurance and make sure the company is licensed before buying a policy.”
One example of a company selling home warranties in California without a license is Nationwide Home Warranty. In response to consumer complaints, the Department of Insurance initiated an investigation into Nationwide Home Warranty’s sales practices in September 2008. Consumers complained that Nationwide Home Warranty either failed to adequately pay for their home repairs or unjustly denied their claims. The investigation revealed that since approximately July 2007, Nationwide Home Warranty has been selling Home Protection Contracts to California residents without a required license, registration or certificate of authority from the California Department of Insurance.
On March 3, 2009, Nationwide Home Warranty was ordered to stop selling Home Protection Contracts in California. California residents who have purchased a home protection contract from Nationwide Home Warranty after March 3, 2009 are urged to contact CDI at (661) 253-7500.
Consumers can call the California Department of Insurance at (800) 927-HELP or utilize its Web site at http://www.insurance.ca.gov when considering buying a home protection contract or any type of insurance. The Web site, in particular, provides extensive information about a company’s location, former names of the company, agent for service of process, reference information (license status, company type, state of domicile) and lines of insurance the company is authorized to transact and complaint history.
I found this after I signed up with them in late march 09 and having severe problems with them on a simple claim.
DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THEM IN ANY STATE!
While this company seemed to be all about customer service in order to get me signed up and get my payment, after the first call for service it became apparent that they were something other than they appeared. I called for service on my AC unit on 6/25. They did not dispatch a service technician until 6/29. The service technician came out the same day. They notified Nationwide that my unit needed repair or replacement. I spoke with the service technician who said that Nationwide told them they would be calling me for authorization to fix/replace the unit. When I had not heard from them that evening I called to follow up and was told they needed my service records for the AC unit. I gathered the service records and sent them to them on 7/1, after calling them to make sure they had them I was told that it would be 7-10 business days for them to review and make a determination. I called at 7 days and was told it would be 10-12 business days. I called today 7/22 and was told the claim was denied. They said it was denied because of a pre-existing condition. I have not had problems with the unit for 2 years and have records to prove. In addition, when I asked for something in writing denying the claim- I was told that was not their policy and they would not send me anything in writing- only tell me over the phone. Can you say “class action suit?”
SCAMS. Do NOT use them. Save your money and repair yourself or get some other home warranty.

It seems as if Nationwide’s strategy to deny claims on certain electrical and air conditioning units is to request a maintenance record and once you do not have such, they tell you fix the problem out of pocket and send the invoices, we will review. Nonsense!! They claim “When a major system or appliance malfunctions, just call us 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week and we will send one of our certified, licensed and screened technician to your home for the necessary repairs.” Well, where is the condition that you must have maintenance records or else your claim will be denied.
It is just totally unfair to the consumer that when you think you have protection, you don’t while they will quickly accept your money. They have denied our claim to fix our airconditioning after occupying our dwelling for less than one year, (never mind the unit was inspected prior to purchase and found to be in good working order) calling them I can’t even count how many times, putting us on hold for more than 1 hr (yes, we held on that long), speaking to maybe everyone in that call centre, hearing at one point someone saying “I refuse to speak to….”because the line was apparently opened, this kind of service is beyond ridiculous. How are these people able to continue operating when they treat customers like that? For this one disgruntled customer, it shall be noised abroad, never, never, never give Nationwide your money, you will regret it.
There needs to be zeros in order to rate this Company. Like 99% of the other postings (the other 1% are Nationwide-generated fakes), I can highly recommend this warranty company as a first-class scam operation. Their obvious mission statement must be: “take the money and run!”. The most effective way of denying Nationwide the opportunity of deceiving many other homeowners, is to file a serious complaint with the National Board of Realtors, whose membership probably initiates the vast majority of home warranty business when their Realtor members list and sell homes.
Horrible! Customer service comes up with reasons why they can’t take care of a claim. Supervisors say they can. Each time you talk to someone you get a different answer or find out claim was never filed to begin with. Have placed two claims with them. Will NOT use them ever again! Have used First American in the past with another house and they were ok.
HORRIBLE experience. Took an average of five days and five calls to get repair man. Even if repair man is approved and shows up, they deny service if you do not have sufficient paper work (which they do not tell you ahead of time) and will make you pay for the service visit even with no repair done. Beware of paying on line with credit card. Once they have your card, they will continue to renew and getting this horrible service cancelled is a nightmare. I had service reps who refused to take my call when my emergency repair was pending for more than 30 days.
Yeah. I was just screwed out of $500 by these guys. I wish someone would shut them down.
I called several times and been placed on what seemed like terminal hold and was transferred around just to get someone out to repair a garbage disposal and to only be told on the last call that my contract ended….no letter, no phone call or email was sent alerting me to this fact. After reading these comments I’m better off without this company. Thank goodness for a small gift in disguise.
I waited 13 days for someone to fix my air conditioner. One contracter came out and was not licensed but paid him the $50, then it took over a week to assign another contractor. They were good, but when they called to get authorization they asked a bunch of questions about the maintenance of the home owner until the got an answer that would void the repair. It all depends on how the contractor answers the questions. They don’t pay for anything and the contractor is stuck in the middle. Don’t buy the warranty from Nationwide Home Warranty. Also when you call the put you in a continuous loop so it takes 30 minutes to get live person.
After 5 phone calls reporting a basement full of water I spoke to a superviser. Of course he was full of apologies, but after waiting on hold 15 minutes, I was in no mood. He told me he would arrange for weekend service I I had already been calling for six days. He forgot to tell the plumbing company who responded to the service call. They were very understanding and came on a Sat. Because we had drain the water out in the 8 days since the first call of service the insurance comapony did not approve work.
Our A/C is broken. We live in AZ and it’s in the middle of July. Do you think we have heard back from Nationwide after reporting this over 24 hours ago?
The last time we had a claim it was also ridiculous!! I finally called to complain about their service and the girl was so rude and nasty with me. She kept cutting me off, refused to let me speak to a manager, and told me that someone would call me. My story is the same as everyone else’s. On hold for 15 minutes, they hang up on you, or “someone” will call you……….(the manager never called btw).
I wish I would have seen this website before we signed up with them. I am shocked that this company still exists given all of these comments here. I will report them to the BBB if everyone else will. What else can we do?
I just recently changed my home warranty to Nationwide and only wish I had seen this website beforehand. I placed my first claim last week (air conditioning not working and if you live in TX you know it’s hot as ….). Still have no one scheduled to come out. When I’ve tried to call back to see what the problem is, I’m usually on hold for more than 15 minutes and if I do get through, I’m told someone will get back with me but they never do. After reading the postings on this site, I’m worried that when they do process my claim, if any needed repairs or replacements will be honored with this warranty. Is there no recourse for action against this company? What can be done?
Beware of this company. They do not pay any claims and vendors don’t respect them either. Nationwide is nothing more than a scam designed to get your money without giving you anything in return. You would be better off saving your money and fixing your stuff yourself. If you get Nationwide you will be fixing your stuff yourself anyway.
BUYERS BEWARE.
They would fix my A/C because I didn’t have enough paper work. I bought a bank owned property and the only paperwork I have was when I got the A/C tuned up 4 months previous when I bought the property, they said that wasn’t enough. I never received any notice from them in the mail and had to keep calling them. When you call them and inquire about getting their warranty when buying a used property that has no paperwork, they say you don’t need it, it’s covered!
It will take 48 hours for for your claim to be processed. Meaning you won’t even get a call back until after 48 hours after filing claim.
If you call afterhours you get an answering service. All they will do is take your information and email them. No one will call you back if you have an emergency even though they are supposed to. I had to call them during business hours after no one called me back for an after hours emergency. At that point the customer service said they will process my claim and someone will call me back. I waited 6 hours and no one called me. I called them again and was told that my claim still had not been processed and they did not know who talked with me. I refused to get off the phone until they processed my claim. Once my claim was processed they sent me an email with the contractor that was to take care of the problem. I arranged with the contractor to come over. I waited at the appointed time and no one showed up. After waiting 4 hours I called the contractor who said he will not come because nationwide has not paid him on his last job. I finally had to use the yellow pages and pay for the service myself. I would recommend keeping your money rather wasting it on this worthless home warrenty.
Do not buy your warranty from this company. Worst service ever. NO one returns your call and nothing is ever covered. They have an excuse why they don’t pay for anything. Biggest mistake I ever made.
Everyone who has this company drafting your account through a debit card BEWARE… I had to cancel my debit card and have a new one issued to stop them from pulling money out of my account, if you can get your banks fraud department to put a stop on any transactions from them, you will be better off. If you ask them to cancel the policy or ever tell them you do not want to renew they will continue to take money from you…THEY ARE CRIMINALS RUNNING A SCAM OUT OF A SMALL APARTMENT IN NEW YORK. WE NEED TO FILE A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT AGAINST THEM. IF THERE ARE ANY ATTYS. OUT THERE LOOKING FOR A SURE THING, THIS WOULD BE IT!!! I HAD ALL THE INFORMATION THEY ASKED FOR AND ALL THE MAINTENANCE RECORDS AND I STILL CANNOT GET THEM TO DO WHAT THE CONTRACT STATES THEY SHOULD BE DOING.
I would urge everyone with a bad review for this company to file a complaint with the “New York State Atty. General Andrew M. Cuomo Bureau of Consumer Frauds and Protection” @ 120 Broadway, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10271-0332. Fax# 212-416-8787. I have filed mine. I had the proper maintenance records and still cannot get the repairs completed with this company. The contractor says they tried to get him to come up with a cheaper solution than replacing my a-coil and they are refusing to replace my compressor, stating that the contractor told them it worked fine the first time he came out and that it was our fault that it went out. The contractor states that he never said that and is willing to made a 3-way call to them but now whenever I call to speak with the same supervisor “Mark”, he is never there. I have been told 7 times that I would receive a call back and have never received a call from this company, they just denied and closed my claim and I did not find that out til I called them several times and demanded a supervisor. If you cannot get anyone to answer your call, try another phone line…I started *67 calling them and get through quicker as well…they have caller ID and if they know who it is, you will sit on hold til you give up. REPORT THIS COMPANY TO THE STATE OF NEW YORK AND LETS GET A CLASS ACTION SUITE GOING!!!
This is the worst company I have ever done business with! They are thieves! Letters from the New York Consumers Affairs Dept. and letters from California State Attorney General’s Office written on my behalf have been repeatedly ignored. My many phone calls have been rebuffed–they will not even let you speak to anyone in authority. They steal your money: they took my credit info. from the previous year to buy a second year without my authorization and will not return the money. They never fixed my dishwasher. Each time they sent someone to try to repair it, I had to pay another service fee. Finally, I had to pay for my own plumber to do the job.
I to did not do a very good job of researching this company. I put in a claim and they assigned someone but the wrong company to handle the problem. So of course let’s pay another service charge and if you can get them to answer the phone good luck. I have tried for two day, first you are on hold for more than an hour and then yep you guessed it they hang up on you. Yes, of course you can email them, yes, that works almost as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fraud. that is all i can say.
I never received a contract in the mail or by e-mail. I cannot get an answer when I call to report a claim. I am placed on hold for long periods of time and when I hang up and call back, the call never connects. This company is not reliable and I will report them to the BBB, the Insurance Commissioner, and the Attorney General.
AVOID NATIONWIDE AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This company is a SCAM. I should have done more research and/or just stayed with Old Republic.
#1. Good luck getting someone to answer the phone. The ONLY way to get your call answered is to go through “sales” and then be transfered. You have a very strong chance that they will simply hang up on you.
#2. The policy is non-cancelable. That means they will keep your money no matter what.
#3. They WILL deny all claims over $100. We have tried twice to get them to fix two separate items an A/C and a disposal. Both were denied as “pre-existing”.
We used to have Old Republic. They were great and always took care of us EVERY TIME. Even though Nationwide was $100 cheaper than Old Republic on their quote, I have spent $100’s more on repairs because nationwide refuses my claims.
These guys are terrible. STAY AWAY.
I PAID FOR THE SERVICE AND PUT A CLAIM TO GET MY A/C REPAIRED AND THEY TURNED ME DOWN. THEY TOLD ME TO PUT SOME FREON IN IT SO IT COULD WORK.
