| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights
Note: This company may have sold warranties using the brand name Champion Home Warranty

Do not sign up with company. Horrible!!!
Took several weeks to get someone when heat was not working. When someone finally came and it was the thermostat that was not working, they would not cover it because I did not have bills for maintainance on the boiler. What that has to do with the thermostat I have no idea. Another time I called and the only appointment I could get was a Friday around 2:00PM when they came and told them about the pilot light being out on the oven, I was told I would have to wait until Monday for them to get approval and then they could back to me and make an appointment. I could not wait any longer, I was having company and was without an over for about a week already. I paid to get it fixed and would not be reimbursed.
Unfortunately I referred my daughter to this company and her experience is the same nightmare.
What a shame….I know I have been ripped off and fell like I have no recourse. I even called my bank to stop payment on the last payment to Nationwide and they said they could not stop it ….it is illegal. What about what is illegal for the consumer. I never got anywhere with Nationwide…I have been on the phone all day…they made up an amount for me to cancel the transaction and came up with all kinds of excuses as to why my claim could not even be processed. I cant believe they are in business with over 250 complaints obn this website and the fact they can not sell home warranties in California. Yeah… were was this page when I needed it.
This company is a scam. They to not stand behind their word. Not only did they fail to repair my unit that was covered under the warranty they also would not cancell my policy which I was told it can be cancelled any time and prorated if I wish.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY. I am taking them to small claims court.
We have paid into this company for two years every month and now that we need them to cover a listed part of our air conditioner they won’t cover it without a copy of a proof we have maintained it in the last year. We live in Arizona and this is August. We have not had Air Conditioning for 3 days and they said if we find the company that serviced it and fax it to them it will take another 3 to 4 days to process. They sent out one of their air conditioning reps two days ago and he said our air conditioning unit looks like it has been maintained and the part that needs replacement was just normal wear and tear in a ten year old unit. This company kept him on hold for over 1 1/2 hours to try to get approval to put the part in and they denied approval until we show them a copy of the receipt that it has been serviced. We have been on hold trying to talk to someone for over 4 hour at separate times getting no where. This is the worst customer service I have ever delt with and we can’t wait to end service with them. It makes me very sad to have paid into a company for 2 year thinking we had piece of mind if something were to break down. In Arizona your air conditioning is very important for piece of mind. We are extreemly disappointed and will definately tell all our friends and neighbors to be aware!
This company sucks!
Nationwide was notified that freezer was not cooling properly. After 3 days a repair person was sent out. The repair person inspected and stated the freezer was low on freon and the evaporator had a restriction and needed replaced. Nationwide stated a I needed a professional maint log on the appliance and would not repair the item after paying for 12 months for the contract. This company is a rip off and their customer service takes more than 15 minutes to answer the phone. Stay away from this company!!!!
Too much brain damage to describe. Not worth the time or money to deal with these people. Rude & unprofessional. What happen to the customer is always right???
The worst company, customer service and workmanship I have ever seen. My contract runs out in May 2010. I tell everyone I know, “Do not do anything with this company”. I put a claim in the middle of June 2009. They didn’t respond until several days later. The plumber or so called, did a half way job on the leak under my kitchen sink. After the 30 day mark, we noticed a bad odor in the kitchen from under the sink. The leak had started again and appeared to have been dripping for some time, spilling out old garbage from the sink causing not only a foul odor but delamination of the plywood. I Nationwide’s customer service who told me they couldn’t do anything since it was over 30 days. I talked to their supervisor or so they told me. Again, nothing could be done. So now I have called again to get the leak fixed. Again, I will have to pay another $60. By this time, I could have gotten a licensed plumber and been done with it.

Don’t even go near to these people. They are bunch of thieves sitting in the office and stealing our money. I took 3 years contract, their sales rep (Alen Brayn) gives very nice markating speach (Don’t fall for it). Two months ago, I called them for Ovan problem, They sent a guy and he needed Nationwide people authorization to fix the issue. Nationwide people did not authorize because the expense was more than $100. They started asking me for maintenance records which I don’t have one. (I would surprise if any household does periodic maintenace for their electronics and keeping the records though!). Then I asked them to cancel my contract about 2 months ago and refund my money. I yet to receive the refund. I am planning to sue them and report to State and Federal attorney.
Beware of this company. Your claims will be delayed then denied. You will be put on hold and hung up on if you try to check on a claim that they don’t want to pay which is practically all of them. They don’t pay their contractors and some of their contractors are plain corrupt or incompetent (I just saved over $1500 by going with a different contractor than the one they chose due to misdiagnosis). They will not let you cancel but they will automatically renew you. You have been warned.
Let me just begin by saying that this is the WORST company any contractor can ever work with. In the beginning when we signed a contract with them they started giving us calls. Its been over 4 months and they haven’t paid us a dime. Whenever I call them, a woman says “your claim is processing, call back next week”. She sounds like a recorded tape. When I asked her to talk to her manager, she claimed that she was the manager. When I asked her that their contract CLEARLY states that they will reimburse the contractors in 15-30 days and its been over 4 months and I haven’t seen any money she gave me the same answer!!!! The customer service people are rude and hang up on your in the middle of the call … WARNING: STAY AWAY FROM THEM!
They are the worst I’ve ever used. They lie, cheat their vendors and in general should be put out of business. Sometimes it took 5 phone calls to get a repair handled.
Oh…I wish I saw this web before I purchased their policy for both of my properties. Now we can’t even cancel. They said that the cancelation period was within first three days. They are the worst company I had to deal with. Can’t get thru their claims line, but when you call sale line, they pick up immediatelly. They refuse to fix anything, always finding reason for it. There is little we can about this now. We’ll have to purchase new policy somewhere else and forget about this terrible experience. Silvana & Don
I only gave them a “1″ because the scale doesn’t go any lower!!! Please people.. BEWARE!!! Unfortunately, I am just now reading all the complaints and bad reviews about this company!!! I’ve had them since February, have made two claims, one for the garage door opener and one for my dishwasher..and they denied both! Read my email to them from 7/30/2009.
“Oh my god… I’m just now seeing all the complaints about your company!! ..and am definitely living the nightmare now myself! Your company is the most fraudulent, unprofessional farce I have ever had the unfortunate luck to deal with! I should have known there was something wrong when you asked for the security code on my credit card! Not to mention, your representatives are the rudest..their customer service persona is comparable to a bill collector..and I’m paying you!!! But, now I understand why..because your company is such a scam, you already know that anyone who calls you is going to have a problem with your company so you start off with an attitude toward us! I am sick with disgust and will not let this rest! Why don’t you people get a real life! I can’t believe you can actually sleep at night!”
Rating of 1 is too high for this company. -1 more accurate. If you haven’t signed on with them – you were smart enough to check their reviews 1st. Biggest scam ! Nothing but headaches. If you don’t have mainentenance records – even for a ceiling fan they wont fix it.
This is a scam. Like everyone else, they ask for a service records after 2 weeks of phone tags to replace my A/C unit control board which is 11 years old. We should have look at this site before switching from AHS to NW.
If you live in California, there is a warning from the California State Commissioner to not do business with this company.

Commissioner Poizner Warns Consumers About Home Warranty Scams Nationwide Home Warranties Attempting to Sell Policies Without License Commissioner Steve Poizner warned consumers that unscrupulous companies are scamming consumers and trying to sell home warranty policies in California without the proper license.
“Consumers rightly expect that legitimate claims will be paid expediently and fully,” said Commissioner Poizner. “There are unlicensed home warranty companies in the market scamming honest customers. If there is any doubt at all about a company trying to sell insurance, people should contact the Department of Insurance and make sure the company is licensed before buying a policy.”
One example of a company selling home warranties in California without a license is Nationwide Home Warranty. In response to consumer complaints, the Department of Insurance initiated an investigation into Nationwide Home Warranty’s sales practices in September 2008. Consumers complained that Nationwide Home Warranty either failed to adequately pay for their home repairs or unjustly denied their claims. The investigation revealed that since approximately July 2007, Nationwide Home Warranty has been selling Home Protection Contracts to California residents without a required license, registration or certificate of authority from the California Department of Insurance.
On March 3, 2009, Nationwide Home Warranty was ordered to stop selling Home Protection Contracts in California. California residents who have purchased a home protection contract from Nationwide Home Warranty after March 3, 2009 are urged to contact CDI at (661) 253-7500.
Consumers can call the California Department of Insurance at (800) 927-HELP or utilize its Web site at http://www.insurance.ca.gov when considering buying a home protection contract or any type of insurance. The Web site, in particular, provides extensive information about a company’s location, former names of the company, agent for service of process, reference information (license status, company type, state of domicile) and lines of insurance the company is authorized to transact and complaint history.
I found this after I signed up with them in late march 09 and having severe problems with them on a simple claim.
DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THEM IN ANY STATE!
While this company seemed to be all about customer service in order to get me signed up and get my payment, after the first call for service it became apparent that they were something other than they appeared. I called for service on my AC unit on 6/25. They did not dispatch a service technician until 6/29. The service technician came out the same day. They notified Nationwide that my unit needed repair or replacement. I spoke with the service technician who said that Nationwide told them they would be calling me for authorization to fix/replace the unit. When I had not heard from them that evening I called to follow up and was told they needed my service records for the AC unit. I gathered the service records and sent them to them on 7/1, after calling them to make sure they had them I was told that it would be 7-10 business days for them to review and make a determination. I called at 7 days and was told it would be 10-12 business days. I called today 7/22 and was told the claim was denied. They said it was denied because of a pre-existing condition. I have not had problems with the unit for 2 years and have records to prove. In addition, when I asked for something in writing denying the claim- I was told that was not their policy and they would not send me anything in writing- only tell me over the phone. Can you say “class action suit?”
SCAMS. Do NOT use them. Save your money and repair yourself or get some other home warranty.

It seems as if Nationwide’s strategy to deny claims on certain electrical and air conditioning units is to request a maintenance record and once you do not have such, they tell you fix the problem out of pocket and send the invoices, we will review. Nonsense!! They claim “When a major system or appliance malfunctions, just call us 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week and we will send one of our certified, licensed and screened technician to your home for the necessary repairs.” Well, where is the condition that you must have maintenance records or else your claim will be denied.
It is just totally unfair to the consumer that when you think you have protection, you don’t while they will quickly accept your money. They have denied our claim to fix our airconditioning after occupying our dwelling for less than one year, (never mind the unit was inspected prior to purchase and found to be in good working order) calling them I can’t even count how many times, putting us on hold for more than 1 hr (yes, we held on that long), speaking to maybe everyone in that call centre, hearing at one point someone saying “I refuse to speak to….”because the line was apparently opened, this kind of service is beyond ridiculous. How are these people able to continue operating when they treat customers like that? For this one disgruntled customer, it shall be noised abroad, never, never, never give Nationwide your money, you will regret it.
There needs to be zeros in order to rate this Company. Like 99% of the other postings (the other 1% are Nationwide-generated fakes), I can highly recommend this warranty company as a first-class scam operation. Their obvious mission statement must be: “take the money and run!”. The most effective way of denying Nationwide the opportunity of deceiving many other homeowners, is to file a serious complaint with the National Board of Realtors, whose membership probably initiates the vast majority of home warranty business when their Realtor members list and sell homes.
Horrible! Customer service comes up with reasons why they can’t take care of a claim. Supervisors say they can. Each time you talk to someone you get a different answer or find out claim was never filed to begin with. Have placed two claims with them. Will NOT use them ever again! Have used First American in the past with another house and they were ok.
HORRIBLE experience. Took an average of five days and five calls to get repair man. Even if repair man is approved and shows up, they deny service if you do not have sufficient paper work (which they do not tell you ahead of time) and will make you pay for the service visit even with no repair done. Beware of paying on line with credit card. Once they have your card, they will continue to renew and getting this horrible service cancelled is a nightmare. I had service reps who refused to take my call when my emergency repair was pending for more than 30 days.
Yeah. I was just screwed out of $500 by these guys. I wish someone would shut them down.
