Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights
Note: This company may have sold warranties using the brand name Champion Home Warranty

Sean, good for you for cancelling! These people are crooks and I doublt they will follow up with collections…They tried it with me and got no where.
I was happy my credit card company believed me when I told them Nationwide Home Warrenty was running a fraudulent company…My Credit Card company got my money back for me.
Began paying Nationwide 37.33 in July 08. Made a claim on 12/13/2008 for a leaky faucet and explained I did not have my contract number…..call escalated to supervisor who did not return my call. Called again on 12/14..no return call. Called again 6 times on 12/15….no retrun call. Called again on 12/16…..no return call. Filed a complaint with BBB on 12/16. Called my bank on 12/17 to have all payments returned to me….they obliged. Called Nationwide to cancel on 12/18….call escalated to Michael Peterson (Billing Supervisor); he said I could not cancel and he was sending me to collections. I reitterated Nationwide no longer had permission to debit my account; Michael peterson continued to say he was sending to collections. I said thank you and good bye. What does it take to run a company with integrity? I wish I had researched available reviews before hand. Shame on Nationwide!
I have already written my complaint about this company and based on the many many complaints found on this website I suggest a “class action lawsuit” against Nationwide Home Warranty.
This company needs to go down!
I submitted a claim for a water heater problem. When the problem reoccured in less than 1 week, the repair company requested the replacement of the water heater, and they were given an authorization, which was put on hold. Nationwide then requested maintenance records from me. Since there had never been a problem with the water heater before, there were no maintenance records. Nationwide stated that without the records, I would have to pay out of pocket, they would review it, and then determine if they would reimburse. According to the plumbing service, this is the ploy they use not to pay for the repairs.
A total rip off. Stay away……. Don’t even call them!!!
Wanted mantance records for our plumbing. Couldn’t explain what kind of mantance was required for the plumbing!
This is the WORST customer service I have ever experienced!! We had called NHW once after having the contract for about 9 months because our A/C kept turning on and off repeatedly. We never heard back and decided to fix it ourselves.
Recently, our water heater started leaking. We decided to give them another chance. Much to our surprise they actually sent out a technician to survey our claim. The technician said our water heater needed to be replaced and informed NHW. After not hearing anything back in three days, we called the technician back to ensure he told NHW. He confirmed he did and called NHW back on our behalf. NHW said they closed our claim!!!! We decided to call back ourselves to find out why our claim had been closed. We were then asked for maintenance records for our water heater. We provided the requested information via the fax number provided by the call center representative. We waited a few more days and did not hear anything back. We called again and were asked once more for our maintenance records. We told them that we had already faxed them over. We were then told that our claim was “under review” and that we should hear something back in 3-5 business days. We gave them 5 business days and called back. We were then asked again for our maintenance records. At this point we were beyond frustrated. We asked for an alternate fax number because the other one obviously was not working. We faxed the information over. We then waited on the phone and verified that the call center person received the fax. The call center person said she received the fax and that our claim would need to be reviewed and that the process would take a minimum of 15 business days. Our water heater has been leaking now for over two weeks!!!
This company is a SCAM!!! Review the above concurring comments from other frustrated consumers as well as the BBB’s comments. Do not waste your money. This company will take your money and offer you nothing but a hassle in return. Find a reliable company!
Another experience with this company. I called to confirm when my contract will expire. They told me a date (one year after I brought the contract). I said this is not correct. They transfer ny cal to three peoples, everyone told me same date. Then I indicate the date should be one year after effective date (which is 30 days after I brought the contract) by point to the exact statement in the contract. Then they agreed what I said. They either realy not know about the contract they selling or try to cheat again.
I called for service, the customer service person took notes (he said he do not have access to my contract in the computer) and said their supervisor would call me back to give me instruction within 48 hours. Nerver happened. I called again, they take notes again. Never called me back. I called third time and asked to talk to their supervisor. the customer service person said No and only thing he could do was talking notes again. This company just cheat for money.
I paid $400.00 for my yearly contract in March 2008. I called, for the first time, to have Washer repaired, immediately the repair company called and came out, fixed washer, then had to call NHW in order to get approval for over $100. The NHW person told him the claim was not covered because of a misunderstanding between his explaination and the actual problem relayed to NHW, so I had to pay for the repair. Even the technician said they were wrong and he was going to tell his boss not to use this company anymore. I promptly called them and they said fax info to appeal board. I did, two weeks later I got an email saying they had reviewed my claim denial and it was a mistake and I would get immediate reimbursement. That was Nov 5, 2008, today is Dec 11, 2008 and I’ve still not gotten it. I have called 7 times, and gotten rude service, cut off several times and the run around, passing me from one person to another. One told me it’s “in process” and another said it was supposed to be processed within 3-6 business days. They are horrible at customer service…Their website says “Simply call us 24 hours a day at 1 (888) 500-2110 and experience our outstanding customer service for yourself. With multiple call centers across the country, our Customer Care representatives will show professionalism, dedication and concern for your very unique needs.” What A LIE!!!
Beware and never purchase this warranty!!!
My wife took a policy with these guys, sadly she was only going on the salesman and neither of us researched the company properly. Three months in to the contract we went to turn our heat on and it had given up.
We called Nationwide on December 1st. The service tech arrived on December 10th! They guarantee to have somebody out within 24 hours, we called many times during this period, and everybody in the service / claims department is very unhelpful, curt, and at times plain rude. The first contractor they sent the job to didn’t cover our area, it took 4 days for this to become apparent. The second contractor they sent the job to was no longer working for Nationwide, the third contractor did show up after we repeatedly called and demanded service as a cold front had moved in.
The contractor was good, did a good job and was very helpful.
However, the claim for $300 to replace a broken circuit board was “PUT ON HOLD” as we had to provide maintenance records showing we maintained the heating and A/C system on a MONTHLY BASIS! What would be the point of a warranty if I spent hundreds on proactive maintenance every month?
When I tried to address these issues, the claims people just reverted to their script and refused to put me on to a supervisor or manager. I have paid in two 6 month installments, so obviously I shall instruct my bank not to pay the second installment, as Nationwide tell me there is “NO CANCELLATION!”
I did have the luck to speak to one lady in the sales department who was helpful and polite, and took my information and said she would someone call me back. Refreshing change considering the service department put the phone down on you during a perfectly civil conversation!
When I speak to sales as a potential customer, they guarantee a 24 hour window to have a service tech on site and they state I do not have to provide receipts or records!
From having read these other comments, I shall be pursuing this matter with legal advice and I will intend to not pay any other monies, and shall attempt to obtain a refund. Luckily I have very good corporate legal insurance and as a matter of principal I shall commit much time and energy to this matter!!!
America is considered a true land of opportunity. Companies like Nationwide Home Warranty (previously known as United Home Warranty, facing criminal/fraud litigation) are a bad spot in our society. Unfortunately, despite the fact hundreds like us get sucked into their dirty marketing tactics and buy home warranty policy with them only to feel sorry later, nothing gets done to stop companies like this from doing business and save other honest consumers from losing money and peace of mind. Unfortunately, I did not check this website before buying warranty with them, and ended up buying the policy with them on 03/11/2008. Like other consumers have noted above, they will not give you copy of their terms and conditions for review prior to placing the order and sell it you under the premise that their’s is the best warranty with fastet response etc. Anyhow, our Maytag Neptune Washer (MAH7500AWW), purchased in July 2002 was malfunctioneing (the touch screen that controls machine operation was not working) and so I contacted them by phone on 12/01/2008 at 5 AM, and they said within 24 hrs a certified mechanic will contact me. A mechanic finally called me and arrived at our home late evening on 12/04/2008. He trouble shooted the machine and determined that the control board needed to be replaced and that he had to come back with the parts next day. He was a gentleman, so I said to him that he can bring the parts tomorrow and fix the machine and in the interim he can leave the machine unassembled so he does not need to do that work again the next day. I also told him that I will pay him the deductable of $50 at that time. Next day he called me that the Nationwide won’t cover this under warranty and that they won’t pay him either for his visit. So on 12/05/08 I called Nationwide to determine the reasons for denial of claim. First the lady in Warranty (a Jennae Johnson) told me that my policy is on hold status because I didn’t pay the applicable deductable which I never denied. Upon my insistance that this was not the cause, she then told me that Nationwide is not responsible for repairs if there was rust around the water dispenser or anywhere else on the machine. Since then I have wasted over 5 hrs on phone chasing someone who will act to no avail. They keep on telling me that with reference to this section or that section of the policy the claim now or in the future will not be honored and the policy is permanent hold for any claims. When asked for the manager she said the buck stopped at her as she was the top gun at Nationwide, however, upon my insistence, I got connected to another rude lady, Marylin Rothshield touted as the department manager. Their sales department told me that James Craig is their president but all my efforts to connect to him have failed, so I wonder if this guy is a phantom. Obviously this outfit is a mafiasso to steal/rob you of your pocket and give you the kind of hassels you don’t deserve. If I had the time I will put the efforts to get this whole outfit closed and all its employees suffer in jail forever to mislead and cheat simple honest consumers. I only wish that someone has that time.
Beware of this outfit and protect your interests.
Regards,
I’m truly sorry companies like this exist. I have a very small service company here in Tomball, TX and rely heavily on consumers to make my living. And with that in mind, I try very hard to provide the service I’m contracted to do. It’s just as easy to do the job right the first time and prevent any ill ease that may arrise when you have to do it again. I was a contractor for Nationwide Home Warranty until today. After having to deal with them on a couple of calls, I realized it was enough. I called them on the phone and asked to be taken off thier vendor list. Thier reply was,” Okay “. To me, a company void of emotion must be void of understanding. However, this company seems to get emotional when the consumers want thier money back. Yet they lack the ability to understand why. Or do they? I wish all of you the best of luck in your plight for justice. And to the aquaintences I’ve met through this company- I’m there for you.
I have had to deal with these idiots twice and both times the results are the same. First, this past summer my outside AC unit went out, it was the 4th of July and the temperature was around 100. I called the warranty company and they said someone would contact me within 48 hours, I told them that this is Texas and it’s 100 degrees can they get someone out ASAP. Well, I didn’t hear from anyone until the following Monday. I had a leak in the internal coil. So the tech called it in and was told to fix it. So he brings out a brand new unit, well he calls Nationwide and they say they won’t pay until I provide proper maintenance records. So I made the mistake of paying him and expecting to get the money back from Nationwide since I did have proper maintenance records. They told me that they would not pay because the unit showed signs of rust, I told them the unit was 11 years old and has been living outside all that time, of course it’s going to have some rust. Long story short after much arguing they coughed up less than half what I paid but I figured take the money and run. The tech called and had them take him off their list. Now I have a water line leading to my tub that broke, flooded one room and had to rip out all the carpet. They sent a tech and he said it was just worn out, and considering it was in a wall, brick on one side and tile on the other there was no way for me to know until we stepped in water. This was on Thursday, the tech came out on Friday, left a message with their afterhours because they had already left at 6:00 PM when they are supposed to be open until 7, he called me Saturday and said he still had not heard from them so I called them on Monday. They claimed he never called, I told them they were lying because I was standing right beside him when he called. So I called the tech, he called them then me and said they needed “paper work” from me. I knew right then they were going to try and weasel out of paying, and sure enough they said I needed to provide proper scheduled maintenance records for my plumbing. My plumbing, there isn’t any such thing, so I asked them what company they used to perform “proper scheduled maintenance” on their plumbing because I don’t know of any that will on schedule, tear down my walls, inspect the pipes, and replace the walls. They said I needed to show maintenance on my hot water tank, it’s up in my attic one thing has nothing to do with the other. Currently I am waiting to hear from the courts in New York so I can file a lawsuit, anyone want o jump on board feel free to contact me at jimabshire@att.net.
I contacted Nationwide Home Warranty for the repair of a broken hot water heater. They arranged for a plumber to come to my house and diagnose the water heater. The plumber collected the $60 fee and told me he would contact Nationwide Home Warranty for their approval and Nationwide would be in contact. 48 hours later I still had not heard from Nationwide so I initiated contact with them. They advised that they needed records of “periodic” flushing performed by a qualified technician on my water heater. I ask them to define periodic, they could not answer specifically what periodic was but finally stated 1 to 2 months. Unfortunately I do not have the records of flushing my hot water tank. At that point I was advised I would have to arrange for the repair on my own and they would consider what, if any, they would pay for the repair. I submitted invoicing on November 24th as the unit broke on November 18th 2008. As of today, December 3, 2008 I have heard nothing from Nationwide Home Warranty. Very poor service and follow up.
They sent me to two service providers for an electric range that didn’t work and both repair companies would not do work for them because they have never been paid on previous jobs. One company said they have been cheated out of $1200 for repairs made. They had no more service companies to give me and refused a refund. Have filed complaint with New York Attorney General Internet Bureau
Karen, these people are crooks…They will never give you a refund on your credit card. I too was told I would get a refund within a couple of days…They lied! They had no intention of ever giving me a refund.
My credit card company had me file a dispute, and I won!
By the way I cancelled the policy with Nationwide Home Warranty immediately after I bought it, because I read these posts and realized I was dealing with con artists!
I have two contracts with Nationwide. Both will end on Dec 27, 2008. They charged me for renew on Nov 2, 2008 without any notice. I called on 11/6, 11/12, and 11/18, told them I don’t want to renew and I never authorized any automatic renew either. They said I’ll see the refund on my credit card in a couple of days. I waited until 11/25. No refund. I called again, they said my credit card company doesn’t allow refund if the charge is within 30 days. I called my credit card company, they never heard of such things. So I have to dispute the two transactions with my credit card company.
I’ve reported to BBB, Complain.com and FTC (Federal Trade Commission)on 11/6. Only received confirm emails of the reports. Is there any way we victims can do to get our money back or at least protect other people from suffer from them?
This is defintely a SCAM, save your money! I have had to deal with them 3 times, none pleasant, most of the time they don’t fix but they are quick to steal your money. Frankly don’t use any of them, the others were not much better, but this one is the WORST….My contract is up the end of January.
The contract contains too many hidden loopholes, which normal people won’t found out until they pay the non-refundable Service Call Fee AND leave the problems unfixed.
Terrible company. Their own contractor said that the replaced item was a mechanical failure and was a non-maintenance item. The service rep that handled the claim denied it because I didn’t perform regular maintenance on the control…even after their contractor provided documentaion that YOU CAN’T PERFORM ANY TYPE OF REGULAR SERVICE on it. Buyer Beware – They will only deny your claim.
Wow this is the worst company ever. i called for repair and when i called, the serviceman came out(only good thing). when the repair ended up being more than what the company wanted to pay they avoided paying for it and continue to cut me off on the phone and would continue to say “still under review”. it is now been over a month.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!! THEY WILL SCREW YOU!!!!!
BUYER BEWARE! Like Jodi mentions above, I wish I would have done more research before purchasing a home warranty from Nationwide. Like so many others, I have been defrauded by this company. They take your money with no intention of ever settling a claim.
They sent a technician out earlier this year for a water heater problem I was having. The tech diagnosed the immediate problem as a bad gas valve, but also said the unit should be replaced. He was instructed by Nationwide to just fix what needed to be fixed and when the unit went out they would take care of it then. Just last week the unit started to leak so I placed a claim. Nationwide has since denied the claim stating that the unit had already been worked on and that voided the warranty, despite the fact that it was their technician who worked on it.
These people are scam artists and I will be placing a claim with the AZ State Department of Insurance for fraud. I suggest anyone else having issues with this company do the same thing. Each state should have a department of insurance, and you place the claim with the office in the state that you live, not the state where Nationwide operates.
Good luck!!
Wow! I wish I would have read all these reviews prior to purchasing a home warranty from Nationwide Home Warranty. I joined 1 year ago today and from what I can tell it looks like they have gotten worse as the year goes on. My heating unit in the attic is not working properly and they sent someone out to look at it. The repair man called Nationwide and was told that they needed to talk to me and they would call me within 24 hours and you all know that was a joke, I called them back 2 days later and was told that I needed to fax over maintance records, now mind you based on 3 different opnions no maintance in the world would have saved what was the problem on my unit. Finally, today I called and the girl said that it was denied because it is not the primary unit. My home is under 5,000 sq feet I just happen to have 2 units one in the garage and one in the attic. My arquement was why was I not told this prior to you sending someone out and I told them that this unit was in the attic and they were very aware that I had 2 units when I called them on October 23rd. My other complaint was who is the moron that takes this long to look over the maintance records and then tell you it’s not covered because I have 2 units. I really don’t know how these people sleep at night knowing what they are doing is wrong. You can tell that this is a scam because not one of the people that answers the phone wants to help you get service for your problem, if they were not all in this together their representatives who answer the phone would be more helpful. Stay away from NATIONWIDE HOME WARRANTY!!
Correction: The two renewal charge shows on my credit card statement is 11/2/08. Both my contracts are due on 12/27/08. ( The order date is 12/27/07 )
I’d like to sue them too. But they don’t have physical address and I’m in VA.
I agree with all the other bad reviews. All the representatives who answer the phone sound the same. Talk very rude if it’s not yelled or hung up. I waited two weeks for a plumbing company to come after countless phone calls. They’ll never initiate arrangement for any schedule. I need to call both Nationwide and the repair company by myself. After another two weeks waiting for the authorization of the repair, Nationwide said I need to provide the maintenance records then they’ll consider if I can get the authorization. My claim item is clothes dryer. The maintenance records need to be done by professional company not by myself doing the clean up every time after the using. I asked the person if she does the maintenance on her dryer. She just coldly said if I don’t have the records then I need to pay from my pocket and this is on our contract. I check my contract thoroughly, there isn’t any clause mentions about maintenance records. I don’t have any more energy arguing with them after almost a whole month fighting. I have to get things straiten out ASAP. So I decided spend my own money to fix the problem.
On 12/5/08, I found 2 charges on my credit card. Nationwide just charged me for 2 of my houses for renew contract without any notice. When I called, the billing person said I have 3 years contract with them. It’s not true. On my contract, it says I have to call them to renew it.
I hate to see other people suffer from the same thing. Nationwide is totally a fraud company. They shouldn’t keep running and cheating other people. I reported them to BBB, Complain.com and FTC (Federal Trade Commission). I also plan to report them to the New York State Attorney General. Please do so if you can. I don’t know if there’s any law can stop this kind of fraud. Hopefully it’ll finally get some attention by the authority if more people report on them.
