| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights
Note: This company may have sold warranties using the brand name Champion Home Warranty

I have two contracts with Nationwide. Both will end on Dec 27, 2008. They charged me for renew on Nov 2, 2008 without any notice. I called on 11/6, 11/12, and 11/18, told them I don’t want to renew and I never authorized any automatic renew either. They said I’ll see the refund on my credit card in a couple of days. I waited until 11/25. No refund. I called again, they said my credit card company doesn’t allow refund if the charge is within 30 days. I called my credit card company, they never heard of such things. So I have to dispute the two transactions with my credit card company. I’ve reported to BBB, Complain.com and FTC (Federal Trade Commission)on 11/6. Only received confirm emails of the reports. Is there any way we victims can do to get our money back or at least protect other people from suffer from them?
This is defintely a SCAM, save your money! I have had to deal with them 3 times, none pleasant, most of the time they don’t fix but they are quick to steal your money. Frankly don’t use any of them, the others were not much better, but this one is the WORST….My contract is up the end of January.
The contract contains too many hidden loopholes, which normal people won’t found out until they pay the non-refundable Service Call Fee AND leave the problems unfixed.
Terrible company. Their own contractor said that the replaced item was a mechanical failure and was a non-maintenance item. The service rep that handled the claim denied it because I didn’t perform regular maintenance on the control…even after their contractor provided documentaion that YOU CAN’T PERFORM ANY TYPE OF REGULAR SERVICE on it. Buyer Beware – They will only deny your claim.
Wow this is the worst company ever. i called for repair and when i called, the serviceman came out(only good thing). when the repair ended up being more than what the company wanted to pay they avoided paying for it and continue to cut me off on the phone and would continue to say “still under review”. it is now been over a month.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!! THEY WILL SCREW YOU!!!!!
BUYER BEWARE! Like Jodi mentions above, I wish I would have done more research before purchasing a home warranty from Nationwide. Like so many others, I have been defrauded by this company. They take your money with no intention of ever settling a claim.
They sent a technician out earlier this year for a water heater problem I was having. The tech diagnosed the immediate problem as a bad gas valve, but also said the unit should be replaced. He was instructed by Nationwide to just fix what needed to be fixed and when the unit went out they would take care of it then. Just last week the unit started to leak so I placed a claim. Nationwide has since denied the claim stating that the unit had already been worked on and that voided the warranty, despite the fact that it was their technician who worked on it.
These people are scam artists and I will be placing a claim with the AZ State Department of Insurance for fraud. I suggest anyone else having issues with this company do the same thing. Each state should have a department of insurance, and you place the claim with the office in the state that you live, not the state where Nationwide operates.
Good luck!!
Wow! I wish I would have read all these reviews prior to purchasing a home warranty from Nationwide Home Warranty. I joined 1 year ago today and from what I can tell it looks like they have gotten worse as the year goes on. My heating unit in the attic is not working properly and they sent someone out to look at it. The repair man called Nationwide and was told that they needed to talk to me and they would call me within 24 hours and you all know that was a joke, I called them back 2 days later and was told that I needed to fax over maintance records, now mind you based on 3 different opnions no maintance in the world would have saved what was the problem on my unit. Finally, today I called and the girl said that it was denied because it is not the primary unit. My home is under 5,000 sq feet I just happen to have 2 units one in the garage and one in the attic. My arquement was why was I not told this prior to you sending someone out and I told them that this unit was in the attic and they were very aware that I had 2 units when I called them on October 23rd. My other complaint was who is the moron that takes this long to look over the maintance records and then tell you it’s not covered because I have 2 units. I really don’t know how these people sleep at night knowing what they are doing is wrong. You can tell that this is a scam because not one of the people that answers the phone wants to help you get service for your problem, if they were not all in this together their representatives who answer the phone would be more helpful. Stay away from NATIONWIDE HOME WARRANTY!!
Correction: The two renewal charge shows on my credit card statement is 11/2/08. Both my contracts are due on 12/27/08. ( The order date is 12/27/07 ) I’d like to sue them too. But they don’t have physical address and I’m in VA.
I agree with all the other bad reviews. All the representatives who answer the phone sound the same. Talk very rude if it’s not yelled or hung up. I waited two weeks for a plumbing company to come after countless phone calls. They’ll never initiate arrangement for any schedule. I need to call both Nationwide and the repair company by myself. After another two weeks waiting for the authorization of the repair, Nationwide said I need to provide the maintenance records then they’ll consider if I can get the authorization. My claim item is clothes dryer. The maintenance records need to be done by professional company not by myself doing the clean up every time after the using. I asked the person if she does the maintenance on her dryer. She just coldly said if I don’t have the records then I need to pay from my pocket and this is on our contract. I check my contract thoroughly, there isn’t any clause mentions about maintenance records. I don’t have any more energy arguing with them after almost a whole month fighting. I have to get things straiten out ASAP. So I decided spend my own money to fix the problem. On 12/5/08, I found 2 charges on my credit card. Nationwide just charged me for 2 of my houses for renew contract without any notice. When I called, the billing person said I have 3 years contract with them. It’s not true. On my contract, it says I have to call them to renew it. I hate to see other people suffer from the same thing. Nationwide is totally a fraud company. They shouldn’t keep running and cheating other people. I reported them to BBB, Complain.com and FTC (Federal Trade Commission). I also plan to report them to the New York State Attorney General. Please do so if you can. I don’t know if there’s any law can stop this kind of fraud. Hopefully it’ll finally get some attention by the authority if more people report on them.
I would like to sue in small claims court. Does anyone have a physical address for this company and/or any advice/success with suing them?
Guys, I very much appreciate everyone posting your complaints, they helped me make the decision not to purchase warranty thru them. Thanks for saving me the frustration and money!
************** READ THIS************* STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY On Aug 11, 2008 I contacted someone named Jeffrey at national home protection located in the city of New York City, NY: 42 West 38th Street 8th floor suite 800 New York, NY 10018. I have two properties in the State of California that I was considering home warranties for. I wanted to know if there were discounts for multiple properties. Jeffrey told me he had special pricing for multiple homes called the “realtor pack “which was 15% off quoted prices with a 45.00 Dollar service call deduction. He told me in order to receive these discounts I had to purchase a minimum three year policy. My main concern was what the policy exclusions were. I call it a policy because that’s how national home protection advertised their service on the internet as an insurance policy. I asked if I could review the policy first and Jeffrey told me that once I purchased the policy he would immediately e-mail me a copy of the policy to review and also send me a copy through the U.S. mail that I would receive in about three days, along with 300.00 Dollars in Home Depot gift cards (50.00 per property per year) that were part of a promotional link to their web site and that I had 30 days to review the policy before it went into effect and that I could cancel at any time and keep the gilt cards, and after 30 days I could cancel with a pro-rated refund .I then gave Jeffrey my credit card number over the phone to complete the purchase. On Aug 13, 2008 I checked my e-mail and had not received the policy from Jeffrey, I did receive an e-mail from someone named Victor Hakim Sales Manager at national home protection (nhp) who offered me the same so-called “realtor pack” deal (see attachment #B) that I had just purchased from jeffrey but without the requirements that I was subjected to earlier. I now realized I had been the victim of false and misleading business practices at nhp. On Aug 18, 2008 I finally received the (2) insurance policies. In the mail from nhp and after further review found that Jeffrey misrepresented the facts about their cancellation policies and promotions (I received no home Depot card nor could I cancel the policy at anytime). He clearly committed fraud over the phone. I immediately contacted nhp and spoke to someone who refused to give her name, about cancelling the policies. I was told my request was being forwarded to a manager for review and a decision would take 72 hours then someone would call me. On Aug 20, 2008 I sent two e-mails as a reply to victor hakim about dissatisfaction with nhp and demanded a full refund. I explained that Jeffrey had not explained the terms or conditions to me as stated in their policy, and that as I looked further into their company I found out that it was common for his employees to deceive the public. Further nhp does not make assurances that the public understands their cancellation policies, nor do they provide reasonable time to review or an opportunity sign their policies. My e-mails were never answered. On Aug 20, 2008 I faxed to nhp a formal notice to cancel all policies and continued to call. All faxes were verified as received. On Aug 22, 2008 I called nhp and again spoke to someone who told me that my cancellation request was still being processed and my final call to nhp was on Aug 25, 2008 when I was told nhp will not accept my request to cancel the policies. It’s very clear based on the sampling of hundreds of complaints which I have enclosed with this letter that National home Protection engages in deceptive business practices to obtain their customers. Consider that fact that a policy that takes seven days to reach a customer via U.S. mail would be impossible to review with three day (72 hour) clause or the fact that nhp employees do not inform their customers of the importance of these conditions and assures that they fully understand them. Nhp has an extensive history of deception and fraud and has an unsatisfactory rating with every known consumer protection agency, and was doing business under the name of United Home Warranty, and are currently under criminal investigation in the state of New Jersey for consumer fraud. They have now changed their name to National Home warranty and are currently doing business in the state of New York. Their customers are being denied service for no reason, hundreds of customers never receiving their (Home Depot) promotions and cancellation requests denied. I hope this information will encourage you to do what’s necessary to protect thousands of Americans from consumer fraud and deception by National home Protection as witnessed at: 1. I’m adding to my earlier review, after reading and learning more about this so called company. They don’t even deserve 1′s. Not that I will get anything but I will take them to small claims court just to try to keep this from happening to anyone else. Don’t sit there and do nothing consider court..don’t let them start another company under another name.
HORRIBLE company, can not talk to anyone, will not make repair for cracked toilet. RUDE people, will not even answer you call when they know your number, call from another and you get answered HMMM!!!! I don’t advise anyone to use this so called company! The plumber said he has never dealt with a company so bad. Their motto…. customer is always wrong.
I am very upset with this company. I called in a claim on the stove in the home. They were quick in assigning a contractor to go fix it, but once he said how much it would cost to repair (>500), they deemed it unrepairable. They are very hard to get a hold of on the phone. The advertise that if your appliance can’t be repaired, they will replace it. Well they said my stove in on backorder thru purchasing. I can either wait 12-15 weeks to get it (ha! try going 4 months without a working stove/range). Or, I can accept $167 to go buy one myself. This is a drop-in range so the cheapest I can even find is $700, not including installation. I can’t talk to a manager (have called 3 times and one is not available) I have emailed the disputes department, but they are not available by phone. No one cares to help me resolve this.
This warranty is a rip-off. They are happy to take your premium but good luck getting them to pay a claim. I am switching companies.
Nationwide Home Warranty company totally sucks and I would definitely discourage anyone from purchasing a home warranty policy from these crooks.
I have an oven that needs repair. They did finally contact a repair company to contact me after days. The gentleman who came out was very professional and told me what was needed to get the oven operating again. He said he would call when he got the parts. I never heard from him again so I called Nationwide Home Warranty. They told me they had left me a message on my phone that I needed to fax them a maintenance report on the oven.
I told the customer servie dis-representative that I never received a call from Nationwide at all. She was very rude and said “oh yes you did!” I asked what number she called and it was not my phone number at all.
Then she insisted that I had to fax a maintenance report on the over. I told her I never had the oven worked on at all before so there was no maintenance report to send! She said that was their rule and if I didn’t fax the maintenance report Naitonwide would not cover the cost of the repairs!!!
My daughter has Nationwide also and she had an even worse experience than I did. She will also submit her comment about this POS company.
Nationwide Home Warranty totally sucks and with everyone participating in this survey I hope they go out of business for good!
This company is a complete scam. If zero was an option, I’d rate them with all zeros. They are thieves and all of them should be all be put in federal eff-me-in-the-ass prison
This company scammed us. They took our money, didn’t provide service, never gave us the $50 gift card that was promised. Rude. Do not do business with!
WOW! I am sooo glad that I came to this website and read these reviews–soooo many–unbelievable…Thanks to everyone who posted comments, I greatly appreciate it! My situation is very strange–I have called this company 3 times and left messages with “claim workers” to call me back for a new policy…they don’t even have time to call me back to take my money! I knew that this must be a giant red flag, so I just googled them….I have learned a valuable lesson and must have a guardian angel protecting from this scam company! That’s pretty bad when a company is too busy to even sign u up!!! Now, my experience makes sense since I’ve read these comments–THANKS again to all!!
I have dealt with 3 other companies and Nationwide Warranty is by far the worst of the bunch.I will not renew my contract
Kay, I’m sorry this happened to you…I feel I was one of the lucky one’s because I found this message board right after I bought a policy from them with my credit card. After reading these posts I realized immediately I was dealing with crooks and I needed to cancel immediately!
Nationwide was rude and refused to refund the credit to my credit card, even though I cancelled the policy 3 hours after I bought it.
It took my credit card company and lots of phone calls from me and a couple of letters to my credit card company and a total of four months… Nationwide Home Warrenty never got the money they tried to steal from me.
This company sucks!!its true..please do not buy their policy!I would rate them a ZERO. I wished i had read all the above reviews..before i signed up for this company last month. Their sales rep offered me a discount for signing up & was very sweet..they were laying a trap! My clothes washer stopped functioning 3 weeks ago.i called Nationwide they sent out a technician on the same day .who collected the $50.& never called back. i called Nationwide several times to be told that i need Maintainence records for the washer. I thought, that is insane. i asked several different of their claims staff if they had records on their washers..they said “no” but then they dont have policys with that company. they told me i signed up with them & it was my problem. when i proved to them that my washing machine manufacturer does not require any maintainence..i sent them several faxes & calls, but all their rude & annoying claims staff were of no help. They changed their reason now saying that my washer had spoiled too soon after my policy started, they said it was a pre exisiting condition.I dont understand y they have a waiting period of 1 month then, instead they shld have had an inspector to come & check our appliances in the beginning of the contract. I asked them to cancel my contract..only to find out that u are stuck with them.they do not refund any money!! I feel so helpless…i wish some consumer organzition or court of law could help put Nationwide warranty out of business & refund all the frustrated customer’s hard earned money.
WORST COMPANY EVER! VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE! NEVER REPAIRED OUR OVEN PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS PART OF THE WARRANTY COVERAGE. DO NOT USE THEM OR BUY ANY SERVICES FROM THEM.
They are holding me hostage over two claims. Anyone up for a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT?
I wish I had found this website BEFORE I signed on with National Home Protection. Now I am stuck with them for a year since they won’t let me out of my contract without a $250 cancellation fee. I have made 2 claims and both times the customer service was horrid. I had to call over 10 times each to get anything moving forward. In both cases, they only called me once. They paid one claim (finally) and denied the other claim. My main reason for giving them the worst rating possible is because of how much time I have had to invest to get anything done. It just shouldn’t be this difficult. Please whatever you do…don’t go with this company. I’m trapped with them until 6/24/09 (It’s on my calendar). Don’t make my same mistake.
