| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights
Note: This company may have sold warranties using the brand name Champion Home Warranty

RIP OFF!!!!!!! THAT’S THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THIS COMPANY. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS. ARE VERY RUDE AND SO UNPROFESSIONAL. OVERALL – DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY…
My hot water heater in my attic leaked into my ceiling causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. Nationwide claims it was pre-existing problem even though i had documents stating it was in working order before the warrenty was issued. They told me i had to write to the national office to get it over turned. Their response was to contact their service line, a complete run around. very bad customer service. do not throw your money away Nationwide is a scam.
Here is another one….They don’t even ofer you zero rating….This is worst company ever I had in my life…Worst Worst worst…Cheater….. I had problem with my washing machine…I called them…They denied…Reason They want me to show them I maintaine every year my wahing machine….You kidding me there is no one maintain washing machine every year….There is nothing to maintain about it….I talk with the customer service people…and I ask her did you do maintanance on your washing machine she said Nope….And Those people ask me if I had one….Kidding me….Talk with the repai guy come to my house he said same thing this company is rip off…Very cheap….
This is for future reference…In case any buddy looking for Appliance warranty never ever sign up with this National wide home warrenty people…They are screwed and they will make you nuts…..
I can’t say enough bad about them. I could write a book about this last experience. AND IT WAS NOT GOOD, BAD DOESN’T DESCRIBE IT.
OK, I can’t believe this company isn’t rated at ZERO! As in the poorest, biggest scam out there. We had this warranty for about 8 months, and then had a A/C problem. The coil in the attic developed a leak. The warranty company would not replace it. They quoted some mysterious contract article (not in the contract they originally sent to me) that said I must have an authorized A/C company to service the unit 3 times per year. This was certainly not in the contract they sent to me to review before I signed up. I went through the BBB in New York State to try to get them to do something, but the BBB said this is a horrible company and they couldn’t do anything. There are numerous complaints against this company. Just go to the NY BBB website and see for yourself!
All of the previous reviews are correct. This company is a rip off. I canceled the contract on the same day that I signed up and they have continued to charge me. I never signed the contract and they said that I did not need to. My 20 year old furnace broke down in the dead of winter. The cost to repair it was $200.00 and they declined to pay. I still had to pay the repairman the 60.00 and then pay the 200.00 to get the furnace repaired. Suppose they had to replace the furnace then I know that they would not have done anything. DO NOT TRUST THEM…IT IS A TOTAL RIP OFF.
Nationwide Home Warranty is SCAM!! FRAUD!!…Beware. I purchashed this plan a month ago and did not sign the consent form for payment which is requested to be faxed back but Nationwide charged me regardless. When contacted, they state that you have 3 days to cancel which is not agreed to during the sales pitch. They don’t send any information out to consumers unless you sign up and then you get it email only. In light of the economy, I find this company to be one that simply wants your payment and never to honor service. They require that you maintain service records for all appliances with a Authorized Service agreement before they will honor any service repair. Even for changing filters in your furnace or air-conditioning units. I will be reporting this company to the Better Business Bureau and suggest anyone that have the same issues to do the same. A CLASS ACTION SUIT will be required to close this SCAM down.
PLEASE DON’T DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY I WISH I WOULD HAVE READ THESE REVIEWS BECAUSE THEY’RE ALL TRUE. IM TRYING TO GET A REFUND AND THEY’RE GIVING ME THE RUNAROUND. ALL I CAN SAY IS FRAUD FRAUD FRAUD. I HAVE CONTACTED THE NEVADA INSURANCE DIVISION TO BAN THEM FROM DOING BUSINESS IN NEVADA. AS CONSUMERS AND HUMAN BEINGS IT IS OUR RESPONSIBLITY TO HELP EACH OTHER SO NO ONE ELSE GOES THROUGH THIS.
Everyone, Please let me thank you all. I was in contact with Nationwide just 10 minutes ago. I am shopping for a warranty and decided at the last minute to do more research. OMG, I am so glad I found this web site. They are scheduled to call me back at 2:00 pm and I will be sure to decline their offer and give them feedback from this site. Even though they have been very pleasant so far I am sure they will hang up on me. Once again, thank everyone for saving me $400 dollars and a lot of pain!
FRAUD IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT FOR NATION WIDE… The reviews are exactly right. I had another home warranty company that was great, but they are no longer servicing my area. So I had to purchase a new one. Signed up with Nation Wide, customer service reps are very nice WHEN THEY ARE TAKING YOUR MONEY. I filed a claim for my washer a month and half later and they requested maintenance records. Sent records and claim was denied PRE-EXISTING.. What a joke!!! They couldn’t explain why they came up with this only that my policy was not 2months old.
I asked the rep what do other insurance companies do if you by insurance and have an auto accident the next day. They just kept repeating it is pre-existing. Asked to speak with a manager they couldn’t give me a good reason for the denial either. Sent an email to the so called CORPORATE COMPLAINT OFFICE still waiting. Doubt I get an answer from them either. So I filed a complaint with the BBB and found out that I am one of many with the same problem. I am pissed because my washer is broke, I paid 6months in advance, and I’ve been dooped.
I have contact my credit card company and filed a dispute. STAY FAR AWAY FROM NATION WIDE..
They are totally fraudulent!!! They were ordered to cease and desist from operations in several states! I have been battling them for 8 months to get a refund and finally my credit card company upheld my dispute. Yeah for the little guy! I also reported to the NY Dept. of Insurance. This company is not even listed with the NY Secretary of Corporations so they cannot be served with lawsuits. Any money spent on them is a total loss, so beware.
Dear group,
I had tremendous problems with Nationwide and was frustrated before I complained to my Insurance department.
Now California State’s Insurance department through their legal department has issued a “Cease and Desist” order to Nationwide. The reply has been acknowledged by Nationwide. Hence now this company is not entitled to do business in State of California.
I am sure the residents of other states can take similar action.
All Californian residents can now stop dealing with this company and stop paying premiums. If the company continues to do business in State of Califronia, then the company will be liable for 5 times the fee collected and other pentalties.
The site is
http://www.insurance.ca.gov, mouse over left tab (Consubers), Mouse over Legal Information, mouse and click over “Search for enforcement action.” On next page click on “Search for Enforcement Action Documents.” In the “Search For” text box type in “Nationwide” and then click on “Submit.” Then search for “Nationwide Home Warranty” link and you will be directed to actual page.
Read carefully and demand your money back.
These people are a bunch of sharks!!!!!!!!! My 6 year old refrigerator died (bad compressor). They won’t honor the claim b/c I could not provide a receipt for the purchase of a water filter or other maintenance records. The information I provided was based on the care and maintenace guidelines provided by the manufacturer but since I could not provide ‘proof’ that I kept the refrigerator cleaned, they won’t honor the agreement. They are asking for receipts but the contract does not say you have to provide a receipt, it just say to provide maintenance records. My contract reads as follows: You are resposnible for providing maintenance and cleaning on the covered items as specified by the manufacturer”. The manufacturer requires regular cleaning but since I could not provide proof that I cleaned the refrigerator, they won’t honor the agreement. What a bunch of BULL!
Thieves and liars! Beware, run don’t walk away from them!
Never made attemps to help with clear cut warranty issues, drop after only six months! A TOTAL SCAM. THIS MUST BE ONE OF BERNEY MADOFF’S COMPANIES.
A TOTAL SCAM. THIS MUST BE ONE OF BERNEY MADOFF’S COMPANIES. They are located in New York City, close to Wall Street and Madoff’s offices. DON’T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED PREMIUM DOLLARS WITH THIS COMPANY. I wish I had read the negative reviews before buying a policy. They are doing the same scam with everybody. You end up paying one of their contractors the deductible to come to your home. Once the contractor submits his estimate to the company, they use the loophole in their terms and conditions and ask for maintenance records, as if people’s refrigerators are cars and they have to change the oil every 3,000 miles. Fortunately I had purchased my refrigerator in 2006 and had it checked out in 2007 by a service technician. I had my records for that visit and submitted to Nationwide thinking that it would silence them. Nevertheless, Nationwide used my service record which was 1.3 years old and gave me the poor excuse that they will not pay more than a small fraction of the repair. My hands are tied. I want to complain to the New York’s State Attorney General and Insurance commissioner. These guys deserve to go bankrupt. They are scamming policyholders left and right. BUYER BEWARE!
BEWARE!! NATIONWIDE IS JUST A SCAM AND RIP-OFF!! I am so ANGRY!! Finally needed to file a claim with them on my refrigerator and Nationwide says that they will not repair/replace my refrigerator unless I send them \”MAINTAINENCE\” reports. I told them nobody pays for a professional to come out and take the temperature on a working refrigerator. They said that they do not cover anything without proof of \”maintainence\”. on that item. So, if you haven\’t paid for professionals to come \”maintain\” all your working applicances they aren\’t covered. It is not really a company but a bunch of con artists. Not only are they refusing to repair my refrigerator they told me that I am under a one year contract (you have to cancel within the first 3 days). I will have my bank stop payment immediately. I will be contacting the Attorney General ofr Alabama as well as the BBB. I told the manager, Rene Jackson that I didn\’t know how she slept at night working for a company like this. I find it odd that other complaints state that they spoke to the same exact \”manager\”. If this is a nationwide (across America) company what are the odds of people from different states reaching the same person? I would say that it is run by a handfull of employess and all they do is field off the complaints as they do not cover anybody. They are sheer profit as they refuse to pay any claims that do not have proof of \”maintainence\”. How many people pay for a professional to come and test their appliances, toilets, hot tub, ac units that are working fine?? They take your money and you trust that you are covered. You make a claim and they REFUSE TO COVER IT unless you have maintainence reports on the applicance or toilet or whatever. So it would cost about $1400 or more a year to pay to \”maintain\” ALL your appliances. If they are not \” maintained,\” they are NOT COVERED so this is a USELESS policy and actually a SCAM!! If there has been repair work done this will not suffice-it has to be \”maintainence\” wherein a professional comes out and checks a perfectly fine, working functional appliance, toilet, AC unit etc just to say it\’s fine. This ought to be illegal as it is nothing but robbery!!
I am very unhappy with your warranty.I have spent the last 30 minutes reading all the complaints this company has. I have the same complaintes My washing machine broke. A repair mand cam out . I was told a major part needed to be replaced. NWHW said the part was to expensive I would get a write off on 2 1/2 year old machine. I would have to present maintanice records. They have been sent but, no that isn’t good enough. I will have an attorney contact them I have also spoken to a rude lady in claims who refuses to give her name and now wants more records. When I bought the policy I asked if someone would come around to see all our appliances . Now I was told after haveing the policy for close to 6 months. That they had no idea if my washing machine was ever working in the first place. The claims department is trained wekll to treat people bad. They had better not under any circumstances renew my contract ,
Everything said above is absolutely true. Thanks fo the filing info. I even tried filing a complaint with teh insurance dept. Notice their address on your credit card is an apt. #.
Anyone that deals with this company should get in contact with the Better Business Bureau of New and file a complaint as soon as possible (https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/getstarted.aspx).
You should also get in touch with the New York Attorney General and file a complaint with the Bureau of Consumer Frauds and Protection (http://www.oag.state.ny.us/bureaus/consumer_frauds/pdfs/complaint_forms/nyc_complaint.pdf).
You should also contact the various government agencies that regulate the insurance industry. I am in the process of that right now.
DO NOT PATRONIZE NATIONWIDE HOME WARRANTY – they do not approve claims
My fiance and I recently bought a house in Roanoke, TX, and even though the house was in very good condition, the fact remained that it was a foreclosure, and our real estate agent recommended that we ask the seller to pay for a home warranty, which they did. Two and a half months later our HVAC system had a major problem and we were thankful that our agent recommended the home warranty. To make a long story short, we were able to get a technician to the house with orders to repair the problem if the cost didn’t exceed $100.
Unfortunately the estimated cost was over $2,100 – the compressor was damaged beyond repair. This is where we started having problems with Nationwide Home Warranty. It was at this point that they requested maintenance records and would not continue to process our claim until we provided them with sufficient documentation. Unfortunately, since we had just bought the house, we could not provide them with the previous owners maintenance records. Add the fact that this was a foreclosure and you might understand why we don’t have any contact information whatsoever for the previous owners.
So here we were, in the middle of January, with a non-functioning furnace. We were lucky to have a few nice days in the 50s and 60s but when the temp dropped down to 45 degrees I decided that our claim needed to be upgraded to emergency status, which by their definition is “a threat to health or property”, and our situation met both of those criteria. Even though we explained why we could not provide maintenance records, the staff at Nationwide Home Warranty refused to process our claim and take care of us. I provided them with the records for the home inspection that showed the HVAC system working properly and in good condition and I also sent them copies of the receipt for the filters I purchased three days after moving into the house. Apparently, these were still insufficient.
When the temps dropped into the 30′s I demanded that Nationwide take care of the issue before it got any colder and caused the water pipes to burst which would then cause additional damage throughout the house, in addition to negative impact to the health of fiance and myself. Their recommendation – pay for the expenses yourself and seek reimbursement from Nationwide afterwards. Even though this was not a good option, I had no choice so I contacted two other HVAC contractors and they came to the same conclusion – bad compressor. Fortunately, I was able to get it fixed by one of them for $1,920, as opposed to paying the higher $2,100.
Over the course of the past six weeks I have made over twenty phone calls to Nationwide, spent approximately 4 hours on the phone with them, and I’m no closer to getting reimbursed. I would say that about half the total time spent on the phone I was on hold, ironically, listening to their advertisements saying things like “We are the Gold Standard in home warranties…proudly servicing customers since 1951″, “…when the washer is full of laundry or food in the the refrigerator, we’re sure to get it working again, REAL FAST”, and “When your heat goes out in December, we’ll get it working again – IN A HURRY”. Even though my blood pressure was rising a notch or two every time I heard one of these sales advertisements, I was able to keep a cool head because I understand that honey catches more flies than vinegar. My cool head has not however, proven useful.
I believe that Nationwide Home Warranty is using their request for “maintenance records” to deny legitimate claims based solely upon the amount of the claim. Remember, they were willing to take care of the issue if it did not exceed $100.
Regarding the maintenance records… The bottom line is that Nationwide had their opportunity to request maintenance records before my coverage began and they accepted the warranty policy. On top of that, Nationwide should definitely NOT be marketing their home warranty to home buyers. Since they also make a habit of selling home warranties to home sellers (they claim that it increases the sale price), they should be forced to obtain any relevant maintenance records from the sellers BEFORE accepting the policies. The whole marketing campaign revolves around the peace of mind that a home buyer feels by buying a home warranty on the premise that he or she does not know the intimate details of the condition of each appliance/system that would be covered by the warranty. Further, a home buyer can not be expected to provide paperwork that was never even in his or her possession.
The information (rate and terms) I was given on the phone by the agent when initially inquiring about service agreement with Nation Wide Home warranty did not match the information listed in the contract I then received by e-mail. I replied to the e-mail saying I would not go forward with the service agrement as it was currently layout because of discrepancies and eroneous information I was given over the phone. They charged my credit card for 900 dollars. They never replied to my e-mail. When I reached them over the phone, they said they would cancel the contract (I had e-mailed them and called them to cancel within three days of the original phone conversation) and refund the totality of the charge but they never did. When I called again, the agent I had talked to said the e-mail might have gone to a spam folder. This made no sense since I had received the original e-mail with the contract. This agent tried to ignore my calls. I talked to another person who confirmed that the system showed I had canceled within the relevant time period and should receive the refund. But since the charge was not credited back to my credit card, I had to call my credit card company to dispute the charge. This still needs to be resolved. I found the agent’ behavior to be unprofessional and disrespectful and untrustable.
OH MY GOSH>>>>> Just got off the phone with Nationwide Home Warranty. They informed me my pool claim has been denied, because I have a Salt Water Pool. When I signed up with Nationwide that was the question I made sure of before I purchased this warranty. So, I call Nationwide Home Warranty and pretend to be a NEW buyer. Frank tells me everything they have to offer he is so sweet and nice, and preceeds to tell about all of the great coverage they have. I tell Frank I have a SALTWATER swimming pool would that be covered under the pool/spa policy. I made sure I said it a few times! It is not a regular pool, it is a saltwater system. He said, “YES it is covered”. I then tell him my account number and he transfers me to CLAIMS very quickly (as I requested not to be transfered). The lady that answers the phone, I tell her what just happened. She WHISPERS in the phone, “You should have recorded it”! I called my lawyer! I will not allow anyone to be scamed by this company or any other Home Warranty Company if I can help it. Please pass this review link to all your friends and family.
As you see I left a complaint on her Feb 2 , 2009… about my swimming pool equipment.. It is now March 5, 2009. Just heard yesterday NWHWarranty will not replace my pump on the pool because they told the Pool Company, that it was to expensive. So I call them. They said, they needed my maintance records. So I sent them 29 pages today. My pool is only 2 1/2 years old. It is a beautiful well kept pool… or it was until it has been without a PUMP for over a MONTH NOW>… I am beyond mad. Time to contact a lawyer. I am a Realtor… dealing with home warranty companies, I’m sad I did not find this SITE before I have had to deal with this. But, my clients now recieve this link to Home Warranties before they pick. Not much to pick from now.. that I have read all of the other reviews. It is a SCAM and they should have to pay. Good Luck to all of you!
BIG BUSSINESS BIG MONEY Poor customer service. Try to contact supervisor, constanlty give you the run around. Leave managers messages they never call back. My advice ask for a manager right away and dont tell them why until you speak with them. HIGH CO-PAYS might as well pay for the service upfront. This company does not pay for many claims. Do your research because there are much more resonable incurance companies that cover way more. With much cheaper co-pays. They do not cover hindges on the stove and many other companies do. Read the small print most of what goes wrong with the house they do not cover. I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy. They absolutly do not care about your dissapointment. I do have a policy with this company and will be happy when it ends.
