Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

I just signed on for your home warranty today. I did not grade your repair/replacement service as I have not used either one (nor do I hope I will have to). I did do comparisons between warranty companys and found a few to have hidden exceptions, which I am glad I did not find out when and if I needed service.I appreciated David Thompson’s expertise in discovering some of the details in your plans and others.David was a great help! After my comparisons I choice to sign with Shieldstar.I hope to have positive experiences with your company enough to continue your service year after year and to recommend you to my friends and colleagues. I was very pleased with the service that I received from Shield Star Home Warranty. One repair paid for the year premium for my warranty.
Wating two months to have my dishwasher fixed, getting nothing but a run around, and all lies.
First of all I was put on hold for more than an hour when I put in my first claim and was then told I would recieve a return call to let me know when the contractor would go out to the residence to repair. I then called several times throughout the day and was told that they had not heard back from the contractors. Finally I tried to call back at the end of the day starting at 4:30 PM and no one answered the phone and I was put on hold for another hour. I am now disgusted with thier poor service and incompetants. Sure it was real easy for them to charge my card for the yearly
dues, but when it comes to taking care of the customer they are lacking the ability to do so. I do not reccomend this company to anyone.
We are first time homeowners and its a good feeling if something goes wrong we don’t have to come out of pocket alot. Customer service is ok.
I had an Electrical issue with my light fixture. I called Shield Star and was called back soon.
In 2 days a local Electrical company called me and came down to fix the fixture.
Everything waa taken care of without a hitch. I am so glad I selected the right Home Warranty Company.
Service provider contractors BEWARE. Homeowners BEWARE. I did several jobs for this company and they are the slowest company to move on behalf of the homeowner. They sit on claims, looking for a reason to deny the claim, and do NOT communicate with their policyholders, or service contractor.
Even when you advise there are no pre-existing conditions, they make every effort to put words in your mouth. There emergency contact number for contractors is a cell phone in someone house. When we called for emergency authorization there were kids screaming in the back round.
They are not available for 24/7 service, accept for sales. They are eager to take your money, but not so eager to pay and or authorize the repairs that are clearly covered under the homeowners warranty.
Homeowner has an issue with a hot water heater. Now 5 days later they have still not approved the claim. They claim they have “time” to make decisions. Well, lets face it, who wants to be without hot water for 5 days???
Once we submitted the costs of the hot water heater and labor, they claim, “we signed a flat rate” to do there work. We signed no such papers. This was and is just another attempt to low ball the claim, and get the work and the products at the cheapest rate. SHAME….SHAME…SHAME…
Any creditable warranty company would have resolved this issue within minutes, not days. Delays are unwarranted and unjustified. Homeowner to be without hot water for 5 days is inexcusable.
Do not buy any warranties from this company. And for contractors looking for work, stay as far away from them as possible. This company provides a dead beat warranty, with dead beat personal who simply drags there feet not to pay the claim, or at least delay the claim as long as possible hoping the homeowner pays for the repairs themselves.
BEWARE….BEWARE…BEWARE…..

When I made the decision to go with this company, David assured me that they would respond immediately with superb service. Let me share my experience.
My waterheater stopped working, I called on a Friday AM around 11:30 AM and was told that I would get a call back. I never did, I called back around 2:30 and was told that they were trying to find a contractor in my area. (If you sell a policy, wouldn’t you have a list of contractors waiting?) I called around 4:30 and was told by Mable that she was working exclusively on mine. I got a call from one company around 6PM and they would be at my home on Saturday AM.
The contractor was here, evaluated the waterheater and said it was too old and needed replacement. He was willing to install a new one on Sunday once the claim was approved. He faxed the claim on Sunday. Monday I called and was told that my claim was on the top yet they said on Monday afternoon that they did not get the contractors fax. I waited and called back, finally on Tuesday, I was told that a water heater would be drop shipped to my house and installed by the contractor. I was in contact with the contractor but they had no knowledge of this. There were times that I was placed on hold when they called the contractor, it was so long I called the contractor from my cell and and they said they had not been called. Tuesday evening, they said that I could pay the difference in what the contractor suggested and what they would pay for a replacement. I agreed because I wanted hot water.
Wednesday morning, I spoke with the contractor and they were unsettled a bit because the company seemed shaky compared with other warranty commpanies. They wanted payment up front. I decided that I wanted hot water more than more undetermined hassle so I called them and expressed my frustration. I asked what constituted an emergency because I am a wheelchair user and he told me it would have to be life threating. If I were to carry hot water from my stove slowly , I could scald myself and not know it.
I asked if they were members of the Better Business Bureau, he said yes, I said that our local consumer TV reporters often report on such type of issues and I was told that I was threatening him but he had tapes of all of my conversations and someone else had done a similar thing and lost their claim. He offered my money back minus about $50 or $60 and asked why I was angry. I assured him, I was not angry just frustrated. I am waiting to check my card account to see when it is cleared.
In the pursuit of you signing with them, the sales team assures you fast 24//7 service. My experience was not a good one. The bottom line, I paid the full price of the contractor for quality service both professional and customer service. The name of the service plan I selected was dubbed “Peace of Mine”,
We have worked with this company for about 3 months now. We have not had any bad expirences.
I had purchased a home warranty in Dec from this company. Some work was done in February to our satisfaction. We placed another order for warranty service on 4/1. Despite 24 turn around guarantee it took numerous callbacks to finally get service scheduled on 4/16. Upset with the service I cancelled the contract on 5/3/10. I cancelled because they failed in their contract section C #2 with aguarantee of a 24 turn around and mine was 2 WEEKS (with me being proactive!). I was told that, if there were invoices that they paid out that were more than the premiums collected that I would be responsible for them. I was ok with that. I am now getting calls from the subcontractors that Shield Star used demanding payment as NOTHING was ever paid to those subcontractors. Even the work done back in February was NEVER PAID. So, essentially, I PAID OVER $250 FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!I have tried to contact Shield Star and am not able to speak to anyone about the issue. The last time that I called to cancel the contract I was on hold for over 45 minutes. I have since filed formal complaints with the BBB and the Attorney’s General for the state of AZ and NJ. STEER FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY! IT IS A SCAM!!

3 days to talk to somebody at customer service even with numerous messages left at answering service. Small print says you can submit a claim 24/7. Does not mean they respond.
Service technician made diagnosis and submitted quote which was argued for a day before being approved. Upon installation of new parts, other problem was found. Shield Star refused to pay for extra parts and I had to pay $147 out of pocket to get repair completed or be left with nothing.
7 days total time to get furnace/AC back in service. Technicians arrived with minimal tools and I had to supply wrenches, drill and bits, extension cord plus pay cash for parts used.
Absolutely horrendous experience with Shield Star and ignorant service contractor; obvious low bid provider.
We will go back to AHS next year.
I have been with shieldstar for the past few months, so far so good they replaced my garbage disposal without any problems. the contractor that came out was an older gentleman and alittle bit slow , but other than that i am pretty satisfied with their company. the customer service people are really polite and nice. waiting to see how the rest of the year goes.
I had a heater that broke this March-this compnay would not approve the repair even though the technician advised them that it was no fault of our own that this heater had stopped working. They approved me for service and then reniged on the agreement to replace and or fix this problem stating that they needed 3 years worth of maintenace records after they had agreed to fix the heater.they failed to do so-stating after the fact of approving that anytime a repair is over a thousand dollars they need 3 years maintenance records to send to underwiting- thats’ bull why don’t they put this in writing in the contract that they sell you—it is no where to be found in the print of my contract and no verbage about this is stated when speaking with these selling agents about maintenance records-before they get your money.–we spent a month without heat this March because of this sorry company- we eventually purchased our own and had the same technician install it. I stayed on hold forever trying to get to management on several different phone call to this company and was talked to very rudely by customer service. I will be conatacting the BBB about this company and will never ever renew with them. I will be going back to AHS for the quality of care from Customer service and respect for the contract that I purchase–I ask for the Lord’s help if anything else goes wrong in my home while under this Shield Star contract.
here we go again—called in service repair on garbage disposal 7/9/10. received a callback from Shield Star stating that the work order had been dispatched and technician will call me to set up appointment. as of 4:00pm I had not received a call from technician–i called the company that was supposed to have the work order and was told Shield star never faxed them the work order. called Shield Star back and was told work order would be faxed as soon as our call ended…well as of today 7/14/10 technician still has not recieved a afxed work order regarding my garbage disposal. this compnay is very very very lack lazy in providing necessary service.
To the potential customers of Shieldstar home warranty:
This is my true experience.
I had two air conditioners, both had same problem in this summer (June and August)-the compressor was stop working. It is a very expensive problem but I had bought insurance-I though I was very lucky.
So I submitted my claims. This the the Shieldstar home warranty’s response, it was identical in both my cases.
1) Says that the local contractor did not call them back.
2) Ask you to provide previous maintenance records.
3) Find out your units had problem before (in my cases, I had records in two years ago, stating the coil was leak and a company repaired them, also my filter was clot).
4) Deny the claim, and emphasize that they are a “home warranty company” but not an “insurance company”.
Ends up in the situation that I have to pay for both repairs my self.
This is the worst warranty company! I put in two claims shortly after the coverage started. The appliances were working fine and were said to be in good working condition by my home inspector. My claims were denied because they felt I should have hired a professional to clean out my dishwasher drain and vacuum my refrigerator coils. They also felt that the claims were put in too close to the start date of coverage- It was a month and a half later! I guess if you buy a year of coverage you can’t actually use it until it’s almost over to actually have anything covered. I also have had multiple unreturned calls and had to wait a full month before a technician was sent out. Save your money!
I signed up with Sheld Star about 2 months ago. My air went out last night. It’s 106 today in Las Vegas. I called Shield Star this morning about 9:30 am and spoke to Sara C. she helped me file my claim & corrected a problem that was my fault! She returned my phone calls promptly & was very helpful. She explained the process and made it easy to file the claim. I received a call from (ProServ) a local co. about 3hrs. later. They were at my my home by 3:00pm, they had fixed my air by 4:30pm. They were fast and efficient. And best of all, it was only a $45.00 co pay. My only regret was that I had not gotten the home warranty sooner. I could have saved some money on other repairs. The policy is called Peace of Mind, & that’s what I have now.
Good Job Shield Star ! Thank you Sara for making this so much easier.
I requested service on a Sunday and received a call on Monday morning to my surprise. I spoke to Sara who was extremely helpful and she got all the info she needed to get my request in. Each time I talked to her it was always pleasant. I would and have recommended this company to my friends. One thing we all need to remember, I can only speak from experience, it’s not Shield Star that does the repair but the companies who call themselves that best that is the holdup when it comes to service. So thank you Shield Star. Thank you Sara
