| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

I just signed on for your home warranty today. I did not grade your repair/replacement service as I have not used either one (nor do I hope I will have to). I did do comparisons between warranty companys and found a few to have hidden exceptions, which I am glad I did not find out when and if I needed service.I appreciated David Thompson’s expertise in discovering some of the details in your plans and others.David was a great help! After my comparisons I choice to sign with Shieldstar.I hope to have positive experiences with your company enough to continue your service year after year and to recommend you to my friends and colleagues. I was very pleased with the service that I received from Shield Star Home Warranty. One repair paid for the year premium for my warranty.
Wating two months to have my dishwasher fixed, getting nothing but a run around, and all lies.
First of all I was put on hold for more than an hour when I put in my first claim and was then told I would recieve a return call to let me know when the contractor would go out to the residence to repair. I then called several times throughout the day and was told that they had not heard back from the contractors. Finally I tried to call back at the end of the day starting at 4:30 PM and no one answered the phone and I was put on hold for another hour. I am now disgusted with thier poor service and incompetants. Sure it was real easy for them to charge my card for the yearly
dues, but when it comes to taking care of the customer they are lacking the ability to do so. I do not reccomend this company to anyone.
We are first time homeowners and its a good feeling if something goes wrong we don’t have to come out of pocket alot. Customer service is ok.
I had an Electrical issue with my light fixture. I called Shield Star and was called back soon.
In 2 days a local Electrical company called me and came down to fix the fixture.
Everything waa taken care of without a hitch. I am so glad I selected the right Home Warranty Company.
Service provider contractors BEWARE. Homeowners BEWARE. I did several jobs for this company and they are the slowest company to move on behalf of the homeowner. They sit on claims, looking for a reason to deny the claim, and do NOT communicate with their policyholders, or service contractor.
Even when you advise there are no pre-existing conditions, they make every effort to put words in your mouth. There emergency contact number for contractors is a cell phone in someone house. When we called for emergency authorization there were kids screaming in the back round.
They are not available for 24/7 service, accept for sales. They are eager to take your money, but not so eager to pay and or authorize the repairs that are clearly covered under the homeowners warranty.
Homeowner has an issue with a hot water heater. Now 5 days later they have still not approved the claim. They claim they have “time” to make decisions. Well, lets face it, who wants to be without hot water for 5 days???
Once we submitted the costs of the hot water heater and labor, they claim, “we signed a flat rate” to do there work. We signed no such papers. This was and is just another attempt to low ball the claim, and get the work and the products at the cheapest rate. SHAME….SHAME…SHAME…
Any creditable warranty company would have resolved this issue within minutes, not days. Delays are unwarranted and unjustified. Homeowner to be without hot water for 5 days is inexcusable.
Do not buy any warranties from this company. And for contractors looking for work, stay as far away from them as possible. This company provides a dead beat warranty, with dead beat personal who simply drags there feet not to pay the claim, or at least delay the claim as long as possible hoping the homeowner pays for the repairs themselves.
BEWARE….BEWARE…BEWARE…..

When I made the decision to go with this company, David assured me that they would respond immediately with superb service. Let me share my experience.
My waterheater stopped working, I called on a Friday AM around 11:30 AM and was told that I would get a call back. I never did, I called back around 2:30 and was told that they were trying to find a contractor in my area. (If you sell a policy, wouldn’t you have a list of contractors waiting?) I called around 4:30 and was told by Mable that she was working exclusively on mine. I got a call from one company around 6PM and they would be at my home on Saturday AM.
The contractor was here, evaluated the waterheater and said it was too old and needed replacement. He was willing to install a new one on Sunday once the claim was approved. He faxed the claim on Sunday. Monday I called and was told that my claim was on the top yet they said on Monday afternoon that they did not get the contractors fax. I waited and called back, finally on Tuesday, I was told that a water heater would be drop shipped to my house and installed by the contractor. I was in contact with the contractor but they had no knowledge of this. There were times that I was placed on hold when they called the contractor, it was so long I called the contractor from my cell and and they said they had not been called. Tuesday evening, they said that I could pay the difference in what the contractor suggested and what they would pay for a replacement. I agreed because I wanted hot water.
Wednesday morning, I spoke with the contractor and they were unsettled a bit because the company seemed shaky compared with other warranty commpanies. They wanted payment up front. I decided that I wanted hot water more than more undetermined hassle so I called them and expressed my frustration. I asked what constituted an emergency because I am a wheelchair user and he told me it would have to be life threating. If I were to carry hot water from my stove slowly , I could scald myself and not know it.
I asked if they were members of the Better Business Bureau, he said yes, I said that our local consumer TV reporters often report on such type of issues and I was told that I was threatening him but he had tapes of all of my conversations and someone else had done a similar thing and lost their claim. He offered my money back minus about $50 or $60 and asked why I was angry. I assured him, I was not angry just frustrated. I am waiting to check my card account to see when it is cleared.
In the pursuit of you signing with them, the sales team assures you fast 24//7 service. My experience was not a good one. The bottom line, I paid the full price of the contractor for quality service both professional and customer service. The name of the service plan I selected was dubbed “Peace of Mine”,
We have worked with this company for about 3 months now. We have not had any bad expirences.
I had purchased a home warranty in Dec from this company. Some work was done in February to our satisfaction. We placed another order for warranty service on 4/1. Despite 24 turn around guarantee it took numerous callbacks to finally get service scheduled on 4/16. Upset with the service I cancelled the contract on 5/3/10. I cancelled because they failed in their contract section C #2 with aguarantee of a 24 turn around and mine was 2 WEEKS (with me being proactive!). I was told that, if there were invoices that they paid out that were more than the premiums collected that I would be responsible for them. I was ok with that. I am now getting calls from the subcontractors that Shield Star used demanding payment as NOTHING was ever paid to those subcontractors. Even the work done back in February was NEVER PAID. So, essentially, I PAID OVER $250 FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!I have tried to contact Shield Star and am not able to speak to anyone about the issue. The last time that I called to cancel the contract I was on hold for over 45 minutes. I have since filed formal complaints with the BBB and the Attorney’s General for the state of AZ and NJ. STEER FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY! IT IS A SCAM!!

3 days to talk to somebody at customer service even with numerous messages left at answering service. Small print says you can submit a claim 24/7. Does not mean they respond.
Service technician made diagnosis and submitted quote which was argued for a day before being approved. Upon installation of new parts, other problem was found. Shield Star refused to pay for extra parts and I had to pay $147 out of pocket to get repair completed or be left with nothing.
7 days total time to get furnace/AC back in service. Technicians arrived with minimal tools and I had to supply wrenches, drill and bits, extension cord plus pay cash for parts used.
Absolutely horrendous experience with Shield Star and ignorant service contractor; obvious low bid provider.
We will go back to AHS next year.
I have been with shieldstar for the past few months, so far so good they replaced my garbage disposal without any problems. the contractor that came out was an older gentleman and alittle bit slow , but other than that i am pretty satisfied with their company. the customer service people are really polite and nice. waiting to see how the rest of the year goes.
I had a heater that broke this March-this compnay would not approve the repair even though the technician advised them that it was no fault of our own that this heater had stopped working. They approved me for service and then reniged on the agreement to replace and or fix this problem stating that they needed 3 years worth of maintenace records after they had agreed to fix the heater.they failed to do so-stating after the fact of approving that anytime a repair is over a thousand dollars they need 3 years maintenance records to send to underwiting- thats’ bull why don’t they put this in writing in the contract that they sell you—it is no where to be found in the print of my contract and no verbage about this is stated when speaking with these selling agents about maintenance records-before they get your money.–we spent a month without heat this March because of this sorry company- we eventually purchased our own and had the same technician install it. I stayed on hold forever trying to get to management on several different phone call to this company and was talked to very rudely by customer service. I will be conatacting the BBB about this company and will never ever renew with them. I will be going back to AHS for the quality of care from Customer service and respect for the contract that I purchase–I ask for the Lord’s help if anything else goes wrong in my home while under this Shield Star contract.
here we go again—called in service repair on garbage disposal 7/9/10. received a callback from Shield Star stating that the work order had been dispatched and technician will call me to set up appointment. as of 4:00pm I had not received a call from technician–i called the company that was supposed to have the work order and was told Shield star never faxed them the work order. called Shield Star back and was told work order would be faxed as soon as our call ended…well as of today 7/14/10 technician still has not recieved a afxed work order regarding my garbage disposal. this compnay is very very very lack lazy in providing necessary service.
To the potential customers of Shieldstar home warranty:
This is my true experience.
I had two air conditioners, both had same problem in this summer (June and August)-the compressor was stop working. It is a very expensive problem but I had bought insurance-I though I was very lucky.
So I submitted my claims. This the the Shieldstar home warranty’s response, it was identical in both my cases.
1) Says that the local contractor did not call them back.
2) Ask you to provide previous maintenance records.
3) Find out your units had problem before (in my cases, I had records in two years ago, stating the coil was leak and a company repaired them, also my filter was clot).
4) Deny the claim, and emphasize that they are a “home warranty company” but not an “insurance company”.
Ends up in the situation that I have to pay for both repairs my self.
This is the worst warranty company! I put in two claims shortly after the coverage started. The appliances were working fine and were said to be in good working condition by my home inspector. My claims were denied because they felt I should have hired a professional to clean out my dishwasher drain and vacuum my refrigerator coils. They also felt that the claims were put in too close to the start date of coverage- It was a month and a half later! I guess if you buy a year of coverage you can’t actually use it until it’s almost over to actually have anything covered. I also have had multiple unreturned calls and had to wait a full month before a technician was sent out. Save your money!
I signed up with Sheld Star about 2 months ago. My air went out last night. It’s 106 today in Las Vegas. I called Shield Star this morning about 9:30 am and spoke to Sara C. she helped me file my claim & corrected a problem that was my fault! She returned my phone calls promptly & was very helpful. She explained the process and made it easy to file the claim. I received a call from (ProServ) a local co. about 3hrs. later. They were at my my home by 3:00pm, they had fixed my air by 4:30pm. They were fast and efficient. And best of all, it was only a $45.00 co pay. My only regret was that I had not gotten the home warranty sooner. I could have saved some money on other repairs. The policy is called Peace of Mind, & that’s what I have now.
Good Job Shield Star ! Thank you Sara for making this so much easier.
I requested service on a Sunday and received a call on Monday morning to my surprise. I spoke to Sara who was extremely helpful and she got all the info she needed to get my request in. Each time I talked to her it was always pleasant. I would and have recommended this company to my friends. One thing we all need to remember, I can only speak from experience, it’s not Shield Star that does the repair but the companies who call themselves that best that is the holdup when it comes to service. So thank you Shield Star. Thank you Sara
We have done work for this company. They try to deny claims and stall and we have still not been paid for the repair we did do.We would never recomend or work for them again. We went right out and did the work and the customer was happy, but the company has stiffed us for payment.Thank you,
Steve Klostermeier(President)
Mr Appliance Of Toledo
I have been with shield star for 10 months now.
My washing machine started leaking water three weeks ago. I called them and filed a claim. Within three days they did have a service man come out to see why it was leaking. I paid him my deductable and he left saying he would order the part and it should be in within a few days. No problem. I heard from him about a week later and he was calling to tell me that they had called him and told him that they were not going to cover the claim, and also that they were going to call me and tell me. I never heard from them, and obviously I have called them many times. I have left at least 6 messages and not gotten one single return call. I have sent them an email and still no return call. It is now over a week that I have been waiting for someone to get into contact with me about my problems. I now have more issues with my water heater and can get no response from them.
A complete lack of customer service, had to file complaints at consumer protection of MD and they offered to refund our premium of $369 when we had to pay $775 for BGE to replace our leaking Hot water heater. Always get an outside answering service and never talk to any company employee.
I have been a paying customer (about $70/month for two properties) for about 6 months now with them and not needing to file a claim until about 3 weeks ago. I didn’t have a problem filing the claim and paying the $50 service call fee obviously but after that I never heard back from them for about 10 days. I called at least twice a day to the main number as well as leaving daily messages with a lady named “Sara” and I also sent about 2-3 emails daily. I finally heard from Sara Cheslow (email address: [email protected]) after about 10 days saying there phone lines have been down but they would take care of the claim. Another 10 days later and I haven’t heard a thing from them until today with this response: “We apologize for delay, as our system is having problems. Unfortunately we no longer provide coverage for your area. Your policy has been cancelled. You can verify with your bank that you are no longer being billed. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
I’m now contacting a layer about getting a full refund for everyone I’ve paid them already. This is a SCAM, stay away from them!
My first experience was a failure. My stove had to be repaired and eventually replaced. The service was so poor I cancelled my contract and I have not been reimbursed. They must have block my telephone number. For a week I tried to reach them and have gotten a message that all circuits are busy. This is the worst experience I have ever had. I would not recommend this company to anyone.
I have been trying for several days now to talk with someone from shield star about an issue with my clothes washer, phone lines say all circut`s are busy and no emails are answered again this has gone on for days. Unable to talk with anyone. policy # 100502ok
I have been trying to contact Shield Star for days concerning my clothes washer, all I get when I call is circuts are busy and when I try to email after several times I received a message from Sara that they no longer cover work in my area. I replied that this was the first that I heard this and did not nor do I have any more info. I after several days still cannot get someone from Shield star to contact me. policy id # 100502ok
I have been trying for day`s to contact shield star, when I call I get recording all circuts are busy on emails they come back unread. After several days Sara replied to my email and said the no longer covered my area and that there were going to send me a prorated refund. This was the first I had heard this and again I have called and sent emails for someone to contact me with no luck. policy # 100502ok Jim Wilson
I contacted Shield Star in Jan 2010, to have my sprinkler system repaired. After two weeks, someone finally came out to get an estimate. A month goes by and nothing from Shield Star. After several calls, I was told they could not proceed with my claim because I had not signed the new Summary of Coverage. So, I reviewed it, the coverage was still the same as originally agreed upon and I signed it in March 2010. I have not heard from them since. I have called and emailed till I was blue in the face. Over the past month, I get an “All circuits are busy” message. I have reported them to the Better Business Bureau.
If you’re looking for a home warranty company, stay away from this one. I would NOT recommend Shield Star Home Warranty to anyone.
I signed up for my home waranty with Shield star in August. After signing up one of my friend told that this company is all fraud. Then I saw all the bad reviews in the internet about this company and with in the first week, I called them to cancell my policy and refund the money. As I paid for full year $447 they said they will take $80 and refund the $367. They did not refund the money to me yet it is now more than 6 weeks, when I tried the phone is not working and the mails are not going through. Can anyone help me what do I need to do next to get the money back. Any suggestions are really appreciated.
I paid for two years of shieldsatar hm warranty for three properties. Their phone line does not work and no emails go through. No response in three weeks to inquiries by website, and not the web-auto-response says they don’t service any of my areas. Please try again later. I truly believe I was scammed. SHieldstar likes to respond that these comments are false and offer the phone number to cus. service. Try the number yourself… it is fake. If they are honest and ever call back, I’ll take this down. #10379WI, 101472WI, and 101473WI. PLease don’t fall for it.
I am Hvac contractor licensed and insured. Shieldstar has not paid me any money for the work that i have done in the past do not use this company they are a joke and they really dont have any money to pay for any claims they will be out of business soon
I don’t even know where to begin. This company may have just ruined me as a first time landlord, as I have a claim to make on a water heater and an HVAC system, but their phones are coming up with an ‘all circuits are busy’ message and all messages going to their customer service site are coming back saying the mailbox is full. I can’t get service on my claims because I there is no way to contact the company.
The warranty was purchased for me as part of my purchase of a 2-unit dwelling, which was a mandatory part of my purchase contract, knowing that things would go wrong and that I needed the coverage in order to cover the anticipated repair expenses. I made a claim, a couple of weeks after the tenants moved in, for a refrigerator problem. Shieldstar said I needed to complete my enrollment (which was completed by the seller at least a month before), and then they would be able to process my claim. I did the enrollment, they submitted my claim and had a service tech come out, who determined the issue was a bad compressor. Shieldstar promptly denied the claim, stating that there is a 30 day service window between enrollment and active service (meaning now 11 months of coverage, not a year), despite the fact they had taken the claim, ordered the technician, and had me pay the %50 deductible, all of which could have been avoided had they just not processed the claim if the 30 day rule was true. At one point, after DAYS of trying to talk to someone who knew what was going on, I got a customer service manager who’s professional response to me was “I don’t know what to tell you”. I submitted an appeal for the denial, which they claim to have started, but I have yet to hear back from them any decision on that appeal. I since just bought a new refrigerator from my emergency fund.
Now I am trying to submit a claim for my heating system, and as stated before, there is no way to contact them.
My advice, if you have a warranty with them, think of it as lost money and just move on. If you don’t have a warranty and want one, do not even consider Shieldstar. Chances are, you won’t be able to contact them to purchase coverage anyway. I’m beginning to think they are out of business and that they just ran away.
They have gone out of business. I paid for a warranty in August, 2010. They now have disconnected their phones and the e-mails all come back unread. YES folks, we were duked on this one. They took my 395.00 and I got nothing in return. Sad world isn’t it?
I filed with the AG office in NJ, also with the BBB. I also contacted an attorney in NJ, but he told me I would spend thousands and would probably get nothing. So, lesson learned about buying on-line.
I have been calling and emailing this company for at least a week regarding my clothes dryer. The other reviews are accurate when they say emails are being returned as undeliverable and telephone lines has a constant busy signal. This is definitely a sign that the company is probably out of business. I had filed a claim previously regarding my A/C in the midst of summer and it took 4 days before I received a call from the service contractor. Thank goodness it starting working by simply turning on switch. However several people including their contractors have warned me to terminate the contract because they dont pay for claims.
This company must be a Scam. We need to file a class action suit. I filed a claim to fix my air conditioner, it took 5 days before they sent a technician out. Shield Star said they would not pay the claim due to lack of maintenance. The A/C technician did not find any maintenance issues. He indicated that I needed a evaporated coil, however, Shield Star refused to pay. I cancelled the contract and have been trying to get my refund. I get a returned email and also a voicemail that ‘all circuits are busy’. I am contacting the better bureau and CNN. This company should be prosecuted. They also have my contact information, which could result in identify theft.
Well, it has just recently started getting colder at night here and so about a week ago we decided to turn the heat on at night since we have 3 small children and don’t want them getting sick or anything because of the house being cold. Upon turning it on we discovered that it wasn’t working properly so I went back to my emails that I had received from Clark Russell (Sales Manager) with Shield Star that had my price quotes on them. I called the number that was on his email and received the error message stating “all circuits are busy, try again later”. So I then went to their website to see if there was a different number and I found the email contact, filled out all the information and sent it off. The next day I got an email back with this message on it
“This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error.”
I would not recommend using this company to anyone, they are fake!!!! POLICY # 101056GA
I recieved a call from one of you sales staff. Stating that you no longer cover the area in which I live. I was told I would be getting a full refund back. That was over a mouth ago. What is the problem. When I took the policy I was asured that my area was covered. I need my money back . I am disabled a live on a fixed income. This policy was my peace of mind if something major happoned to my house . I will expect a full refund in the next 5 business days. Sincerly Rachel B McCloud
have not been able to reach company by phone, fax or email. What gives? I want my money back!
This company is a fraud. I purchased a 3 year home warranty from them back in March 2010. The sales representative was freindly and assured me that this was a top ranked company with great reviews. I tried calling and emailing to file a claim over the last 3 weeks for my heat with the “All circuits are busy now” and when I tried to email them it would say that the server is not available. This company or the people responsible for taking our hard earned money should be punished and forced to give the patrons our money back. I had to pay an AC&R company for a service that I should have recieved from my home warranty “rip-off” company.
DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY THEY ARE A FRAUD!!!!!!!!!!
I purchased a three year home warranty from Russell Clark who presented himself as the sales manager. Recently I had a problem and like so many others I was greeted by the “all circuits are busy now”. I also sent emails which were returned stating that the mailbox was full. I am hoping that some sort of class action suit would be started, but I am guessing a I am just out $975 which I can now afford right now, not to mention the repairs I have to make. I hope others will read this before they purchase anything from this company.
I am unable to get hold of the company. They took my money and shut down their phones and web site…please, is there an Atty out there that will help us? I am a senior on a limited income.
They are now out of business and their website is down. I did get my premium refunded before that happened but still got stiffed for replacing a hot water heater. Be careful they might reopen under a new name.
Company is a fraud. They only have voice mail ever call back. Plus Sheild Star is under investagation for fraud.
I brought a 3 year contract at $899.00 and can not get ahold of them. Any question pleasecall 803 782 1475
I even try to get the guy who sold me the policy (No where to be got)
This is there number you try: 877 782-7987
If i use the 1 rating this will not be published
I purchased a home warranty back in March 2010 and did not need their services until today. I called the 877 number and like many of the posters received the “all circuits are busy” message. Can anyone confirm if the company went bust? Has anyone been able to locate a class action suit for breach of contract? Please let me know if any of you have found a course of action. All the best … out of another bad situation.
thank you – Rebecca
Frauds Can not get a hold of the. I have termed information over to Mass.Attorny Generals Office. I Paid for a five year warranty
If there is a class action suit, count us in. We were taken for $599.95 in May 2010 by Michael Vinci of this company. We haven’t submitted a claim, but our realtor alerted us to a concern about the company; so we tried to contact them without success.
Jim
Compamy will not pay it’s bills. Cannot get a hold of anyone at the number given. We performed the work in good faith now all we want is paid for the services rendered
I had used the warranty package twice last year. Once for the dryer and the other for the Air conditioner. I received outstanding service within a timely manner.
shieldstar home warranty ////CROOKS I paid up for for 3 properties
can’t reach them, on the phone or email, they vanished. I am out for over 1000. No one is able to help. If someone find out how to get our money back, please let me know.
I tried to contact this company as my AC was not working. Looks like the website and phone numbers and also email id’s none of these work.
This company is a scam and I hope I will get my money back atleast the prorated money for the period that I am left with.
I bought a policy for both myself and my elderly parents. My parents had 1 service call on their freezer. The job could not be completed that day. It never was completed. We tried calling the company, but the phones were shut off. I tried to contact them through their web ste, but no answer. After using the internet, I did come across a document from a court case making the company shut down. I honestly forget what state it was or the details. Al I know is that they are out of business and I am out about $1,000. I would love it if there was a class action suit – you could count me in.
I purchased warranties for 3 homes from them. When I needed them, got no response.Tried every way. Contacted BBB all I got from them that they (shieldstar) can’t be reached. I lost close to 1,000. No one can help?

I am out 599.95 paid in full 3/22/2010. The 1st time I needed them was when I discovered all the above comments after no answers. I am trying to file a BBB report, but I don’t have their address. Class Action is what is needed.
