| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

Found every excuse in the book to not do repair on a heater. Physically beat on valve then claimed it had preexisting damage. Finally “found” faulty wiring in the unit that made it not covered. Dumped these clownes ASAP and we are trying to pursue legal action.
Do not use this company. I agree with so many reviews. They do not back what they say they will. Do not use them. You will be diappointed
This was easily the WORST expenditure I have made to date. I have had to call them twice since purchasing the warranty and both times they have sent incompetent, dishonest contractors to my home. These people should be shut down. I have repeatedly left messages for managers, never returned. If you call the cust. service number, and ask for a supervisor, they tell you NO. Absurd!!!!
AHS was a great company back in 1998 when I had them. However now they as far as I am concerned are uncaring, unprofessional and provide no protection. I would strongly advice anyone not to use this company.
AHS replaced my hot warter heater five years go. I have placed many calls to AHS not having hot water. Reps are very unprofessional and not consistant. I was told to hit the reset button and the policy states not to hit the reset butoon. Two unqualified techs came out and nothing was resolved. He called into his office 5 times speaking to the master plumber. My hot water went out a third time and I spoke directly to the plumbing company to inform them that my hot water went out for the third time. I ask them did he have the notes that I was told if it runs cold to call them immediately. He stated that he had no availability and that know one could come out for the next 24hours. He had no indications in his notes about my service problem. The supervisor said that in his notes it mentions that I was a fustrasted customer and that he was going to ask AHS to refer my call to another company. I ask him would he do that asap. I question the quality of techs that are contracted through AHS. I was referred to another company that came out the same day. I am waiting to see if my hot water goes out again. Speaking to a coworker that has AHS, they came to her house 3 times same company and same person. Stating that everything is working fine. Her next water bill was $500.00 dollars and the problem has not been resolved. i will never refer anyone to AHS. Please be careful.
I was having Toilet problems so, I called to schedule a plumber to come to my home. I was told by the rep. that I was covered and that I only NEEDED my service fee. I was charged $60 for their service man to come to my home; the service man attempted to unstop my toilet…after 10 minutes of trying I was told that he would have to disabled my toilet & said the repair/replacement was not covered due to “pre-existing conditions”!! The service would cost me an additional $177. After speaking to rep about the additional fees the plumber was going to charge the rep could not give me a reasonable explanation concerning my pre-existing condition. I pay $45 for my monthly warranty fee
(FOR WHAT).Lets just say find someone else!
my air conditioning went out in july of 2009. they sent an inconpetent company called air solutions to service it. they said it was a part needed for the fan motor. It took him three days to come back and he could not fix it till a part was ordered. AHS would not pay to have it shipped overnite. It took nine days to have it fixed with temperatures of 112 degrees.I had to board my pets and stay with a friend. I was also unable to work because of the excessive heat. there was no excuse for this.
I had AHS for almost a year now and had requested service 3 times. They have been reliable, good costumer service and overall did a good job all three times. Now that Im about to renew my contract realized my premium is $100 more expensive than last year. Im very upset and want to leave them. Im searching for other companies and services.
Had a sump pump failure and a slight water leak. AHS rep I talked to was great, but from there it went downhill quickly. Some 7 hours after I called AHS I hadn’t received a call from the assigned repair company (ARS) so I called them. They said they had tried to call but got no answer. Told them I had been home all day. Anyway, when they came the technician said he could replace the sump pump with the “AHS authorized” one which wasn’t the same quality as the current one. He could, and recommended, going to a better one which, with my AHS 40% discount would be about $400 with the $60 service call. The more expensive pump was identical to the failed one. Had a 3 year warranty vs. 60 days for the AHS one. The plumbing leak wouldn’t be covered since the line that was leaking had a saddle valve in it which is a code violation and therefore not covered. Now, it wasn’t the saddle valve that was leaking, it was further along the pipe where there was a joint. I know I could have had the sump pump replaced for less, but figured I was out the $60 anyway so let ARS do it. Wouldn’t pay him the $236 for the water leak.
I think I’ll just cut my losses and not call AHS for any future work. I honestly think repairs will be less costly that way.
Some service providers were great but many were rude, argumentative, did not complete the service required correctly, charged large amounts of money for “non-covered” service and then did poor work. I had to pay several thousands of dollars to other companies to perform the “non-covered” work correctly as the AHS provided company were “too busy” to complete the service. This happened with several companies and AHS stands by their contractors, even when rude or perform poorly. I took off work many times only to have a contractor not show, and then the office staff rudely attacked me. I am busy too. I understand there are delays. There have been some very good contractors but you never know who you may get. Beware!AHS will not enforce their contractors’ performance or behavior. I have pictures of the filth left in my air conditioner units inside after another company came out to complete the work AHS’ provider did not clean. I paid out of pocket over $2600.00 to have my units cleaned. I had to pay another company the same to do the work correctly. The same with the plumber. He did not fix the leak which was non-covered so I paid 150.00. He did not come back as the company promised. I had to pay someone else to fix the leak. Same thing happened with my refrigerator. I paid for a non-covered repair, which did not fix the problem. The contractor never came to make the correct repair after he told me he would. I have paid double three times this year due to AHS contractors.
I had done business with AHS since 1993, when I purchase a home and was pleased with their service until my AC went out. It was a 7 year old Trane Heat Pump that went out and could not be repaired. They refused to replace it because they claim it was not maintenanced properly(not true). When I had the unit replaced, the service tech discovered it had been installed incorrectly and there was an electical problem that caused it to go out eventually. I will never do business with them again. If you do use them, do not purchase the premium coverage that coverage the A/C and refridgerator, because they will find an exuse not to repair it.
i LIVE IN FLORIDA AND IT TOOK 2 MONTHS TO GET MY AIR CONDITIONER FIXED. SIGN UP WITH THESE GUYS AND YOU ARE A FOOL
2 years ago we moved to Birmingham and purchased a beautiful 13 yr old Brick house. Knowing that we may start to encounter some repairs we decided that a Home Warranty may be a good idea. The AHS add looked great. I seemed to cover all the items we were concerned about (air conditioner, furnace, range/oven, water heater). (Note: SEEMED to cover.) Well, this past summer our air conditioner went out. It took them a week to get someone to look at it. (A week without air during peak Summer in Alabama is NO fun.) You could hear the motor try to start but the fan would never kick on. Did they replace the motor? (of course not). The technition greased the shaft and manually push-started the fan. (Wasted $60). I later had another company check it (another $60). They told me it was drawing high amps and the motor would not last much longer. But AHS would not replace the unit or the motor!! So, guess what I have to look forward to next summer. Now its Winter and the fun with our Furnace begins. I have it cleaned and inspected to ensure that I am Compliant with the terms of the AHS policy ($65). The technition shows me that the Heat Exchanger has a hole and is leaking carbon monoxide. He said its not safe to operate and I need to let the Warranty Co. know about it. The next day AHS sends someone from another company to inspect it. He agrees with the first technition, turns off the gas, and charges me another $60. Well, a week later AHS did determine that it was covered, but told me there could be some “non-covered” items if the new unit was not the same size. All is good in my mind (probably about $200-$300 I’ll have to cover). Nope. 2 days later they tell me the furnace is on order, but I will have to agree to $700 non-covered fees. When I told them that sounded too high, they told me I could get a Cash payout and use someone else to replace it. They said they would have someone from that Dept call me. Well with no calls the next day, I inquired into the status. “It takes 48-72 hrs to process that request”, I was told. Well is the unit still on order? “No, it was put on hold when you requested a cash payout”. So, I started getting quotes from local HVAC companies. They were all $2500-3500. I’m thinking, AHS probably pay me $1500, and I can find someone liscensed to install it for about $2000 (it will still be better than the $700). Well after 3 days they did call to let me know they would be mailing a check for $543. Now I see why the Service Companies don’t like dealing with AHS either. They make zero money from AHS and have to try to collect profits from me. But with a payout of $543, all I can do is pay the $700 and bite my lip. Now after sleeping in Mummy bags for 2 weeks, its scheduled to be replaced tomorrow. The AHS add should read:
Avg cost to replace furnace – $2671
Avg cost to repair furnace – $270
With an AHS policy – $60
(….really we’ll just pay $543, and you’ll
have to cover the rest!!!!!!)
I had a faucet that was over 20 years old that broke. They said it wasn’t covered because I broke it on purpose to get a new one! It wasn’t “normal use”. After 20 years! The place is a phony joke.
They performed very well, but they also raised my premium, so I’m leaving them.
I purchased my home warranty package with AHS back in Dec 08. I was stupid enough to fall for the discount you’d receive if you purchased a 5 year policy. AHS had a service technician come out to fix my toilets (leaking/running) but made me pay two service call fees because they fixed two toilets. OK, I have no problem with that. Then, the electrical wiring in my hot water heater went out. The policy clearly states that this will be covered so I called to get someone to fix it. I was denied service and told that this is not covered under my policy. Also, the company promised to send $250.00 worth of gift cards to Home Depot. Did not receive a single gift card. This company is a rip-off and I’m happy that there is a class action lawsuit in progress. Hopefully I will get some of my money returned to me. BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY….THIS IS A COMPLETE SCAM!!!!!!
Just finished my first interaction with the company, and it was horrible. We just bought our house and it passed inspection. A few weeks after we moved in, we noticed that the toilet was leaking. Called AHS and they sent out a plumber (quickly…which was nice). Plumber looked underneath, said the seal was good, looked in the tank, and motioned me to look at the bottom….a crack at the bottom of the tank. He said that he would need to order a part and it should be in in a few days and he left.
AHS called me and informed me that they wouldn’t cover it. They said that the plumber told them it cracked because the bolts were tightened too much. The plumber DID NOT even check the bolts. Plus, the toilet has been installed for 4 years, and it passed home inspection…so the leak developed only recently. I called AHS and asked how they would make it right. They said that they would send out a different company to confirm…for another $60!! So I would have to pay again to confirm the initial incomplete diagnosis. At that point, they would be into me for $120..more than it would cost to buy the tank myself and mount it. Leroy in the “Denials” department was not helpful at all, and kept insisting that I was paying for the plumber’s “professional opinion”…which is another way of saying his half-cocked guess. Avoid AHS!!
If I could rate a zero (0) I would. The furnace needed to be replaced and it took AHS a month to get our heat back up and running. I had two babies with colds and no heat; only the use of space heaters which my husband went out to purchase because we were freezing. When I put the babies down to bed at night I would keep them fully dressed. This went on for a month. We finally got the new furnace and have heat, but now the furnace is leaking water all on my basement floor. I called AHS to tell them about the water on my floor, only to find that they are not renewing my policy. So trying to protect the health of your babies will cost you your home warranty company if you deal with AHS ( a terrible mistake).
If there was a lower score I would surely give it.
I had this company for 11 years. They did a lot of little
things thru the years ,but now with Air/Heat problems
for get it. The arguments back and forth are too long
and numerious. I finally cancelled my policy and fixed my
problems myself. It is much cheeper than the health problems
you will develope trying to reason with them.
WHY–can’t we get a class action suit going against these people especially in the Houston, Texas area
horrible company, they ordered the wrong part for AC and lied about it. Leave us without AC for a month.
Customer service as well overall as whole company TERRIBLE & TERRIBLE. No sense of talking to customer. Do not care about SATISFACTION. Never ever recommend anybody for this SCAM. PLEASE BECAREFUL.
After 5 weeks, our dishwasher still does not work. First they took three weeks to try and fix it the first time, they took the dishwasher out of our house, when they returned it, the door hinges were broken and the dishwasher still did not work. Put in a second and third call for each subsequent problem (broken door and still not working). Now two weeks later we’re still waiting for the service company to call/come out. Repeated calls to AHS are very pleasant, but of NO HELP. They only find out status from the service providers, they don’t help you get adequate service for your problems. Service providers are unreliable, unprofessional and unresponsive.
Yesterday we put in a service call for a furnace that was not working. No call from any service provider. I called them today and they can’t come out until the following day (third day after the initial service call was placed). The temps have gotten into the 30s at night, and is currently 37, but because the FORECAST is for the temps to be above 40 degrees, they “can’t” (translate WON’T), put in an emergency request for service. Let’s hope no parts are need to repair the furnace when the service people come out tomorrow (if they show). Tomorrow’s forecast is for lows in the upper 20s/lower 30s.
VERY VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH AMERICAN HOME SHIELD. SERVICE MASTER SHOULD BE ASHAMED!
I had to keep calling to get a repair person out. Once they sent a company they were not honest or qualified. The company they sent said that all kind of parts failed when they didn’t and it wasn’t covered under the plan. Repeat calls for the same thing week after week. I own two homes and have a different warranty company that I am happy with. Once this plan expired I changed to the company that has the same abv. letters in their name just rearranged. I will never recommend AHS to anyone.
Been with company since 1995.We have seen the customer
service get poorer and poorer over the years,as the rates
increased. If anyone knows how to get in touch with President
of company, please let me know.Everytime I ask for his #
I get the full run around.I am looking to get with a different home warranty company
Had AHS for a couple of years, and experience was horrible. We primarily called for a water heater, which continuted to breakdown. Several times, we were unable to reach anyone with the company and went without hot water for a day or two extra due to this, then when we did reach someone AHS was unable to meet their contractual obligation to get someone out within the alloted timeframe which again delayed repair by several days in the dead of winter, and when company did come to fix the water heater would soon break again. According to the contract, AHS was to replace item if it failed so many times, which the water heater breakdown far surpassed that number. AHS refused to replace it without stating why. It was ridiculous, because we paid so many $60 fees to have it fixed that it cost both us and ASH more to fix than it would have to replace. (Unless of course, the plumber was only getting the $60 to replace.) We refused to renew and spent countless time on the phone over the next year trying to get AHS to stop telemarking trying to get our business back. We are now shopping around for a home warranty company and will not even consider AHS – even if it were free, because AHS does not fulfill their end of the contract.
