| Home warranty is a complex insurance product. Unlike home insurance, it does not provide blanket coverage for all appliances. Pre-existing conditions and problems resulting from lack of maintenance of appliance are are generally not covered by home warranty companies. Home warranty sellers may not state these factors clearly, and this will create dissatisfaction among customers. Due to these factors, you will see many negative reviews here. Don't be intimidated by some negative reviews here. If you have maintained your appliances in good condition and go with a reputed home warranty provider, your coverage will be fine. |
We do not endorse any company in particular, however you should ignore the reviews that are overly negative or positive. Such reviews are not likely to offer a balanced view and some of them could be fake reviews posted to promote or demote a company. It is always a good idea to check BBB ratings and make sure the company is licensed to do business in your State by contacting State Insurance Commission. Try to avoid paying annual premium and keep your cancellation rights

October 2009 we reported a problem with no heat. They sent out someone who replaced the fan motor. Then in December it ran cold again. It was a total nightmare going through them, with three different contractors involved. Finally they replaced the fan motor (I had gotten a contractor of my own to document the problem). Now the A/C is out, going on a week tomorrow. Guess what? The fan motor they put in last December was inadequate. What a crummy company.
Worst ever took 75 days to get a a/c unit replaced. Could not get any straight anwsers or anybody to return phone calls. I reported them to the bbb that is the only reason I could get anything done with this worthless company. I highly recommend if you are haveing trouble with these idiots contact the bbb and then they will take you serious
I have been with this company for over five years. Every year the ac runs out of freon. I have to stay home from work for several days before the issue is resolved. This year I hired ARS to do a little bit of service on the a/c unit. The ARS repairman showed up the right away after 5 and told me the unit was so old (1992) that it should be condemned because the heater is a fire hazard. I relayed this to the warranty company and they said they could care less. That I don’t get to cash out just because my house will be set on fire by a dangerous heater. The heater issue just came up because the ARS technician was so thorough with his ac word that he pointed out all of his concerns. By the way the ARS tune up only costs $69. Almost the same as the service fee with First American. By the way the ac is still being repaired and I have to wait between 9 and 3 for the service repair idiot to show up. This is my last service with a god forsaken warranty company. I am putting my money in the bank and using it wisely.
I had a leak in the hot water line under my house. I called on a Wednesday afternoon and got a call back on Thursday morning from the Plumbing Co – AJAX Plumbing. AJAX said they would be able to come on Monday to look at the issues. AJAX was on-time on Monday. They looked at the leak and i also had them look at a leak i had in a sink and a diverter issue i had in a shower. They took the $60 co-pay and made an appointment for Thursday.
They were on-time again for the repair and finished all 3 repairs in less than 2 hours.
I was very happy with the service of First American and AJAX plumbing.
Went round and round in circles. After 3 technicians, several lies, 4 weeks, and many many hours of wasted time I gave up. Words can not express how disappointed I am with this company. I strongly urge ALL to stay away!
First Am sent out a completely incompetent technician that has a BBB rating of “F” who misdiagnosed the problem with our pool. After requesting approx. $1,500 to fix the problem and informing us that it wouldn’t be covered, we called another company for a second opinion and ended up paying $100 to have it fixed. Now First Am is calling a month latter for a $55 service fee for sending out an incompetent and/or fraudulent company. Our current premium is approx $1,175 a yr (it’s a larger house) and this is the only claim we have had in over a yr. And we are now wising up and canceling our contract, which we have learned covers very little. Please do more homework then us and choose a better vendor.
We have had a home warranty out of fear for about six years. No more. Following the latest in a string of denied claims we are done. Please tell me how a fridge that is 20 years old whose compressor has finally failed (after a previously denied claim to replace it when they claimed it had to actaully completely fail) can be caused by lack of maintenance? 20 years!!!! I’m doing something right!!! They denied the claim becasue the technician claimed that the layer of dust on the coils caused it to fail. My fault.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! IT IS A SCAM
I have had First American for about 3yrs now, and I have had to submit a claim every year regarding my A/C. FM wants to just keep replacing certain parts on the unit instead of replacing the whole unit, so that there are no more issues, which it keep going out. Mind you that every time a service call is placed I have to pay the charge, EVERYTIME. To this day my A/C is out and I am waiting to get it serviced and I have been waiting for about 3wks now, I have reported to them that I have a 2yr old with health related issues, but they don’t care…..overall I would not suggest this company to anyone……It is not worth it…
First AM is nothing but a scam to take your money First issue: Clogged toilet: The contractor arrives and cannot get his snake to go into the toilet and after about five minutes tells me something is clogging the bowl. I asked him to use a smaller snake since maybe his was too wide and was told that would not make a difference. He then tries again to push the snake through with no luck. In the mean time my three year old gets up from his nap while the contractor is attempting to clear the clog. He sees him, goes outside to call First AM and then comes back to tell me my claim is denied. Why, he told them I have small children that must have flushed a toy that is now jammed in the bowl preventing his snake to go through. I mentioned that is BS and he has no proof of this and he leaves after collecting his service fee. I ended up having to pull the bowl off and it was a paper clog in the main drain pipe, the toilet was free of obstructions.
Second issue: My A/C is not cooling at, I contact First AM and was asked if this is an emergency as it is after five PM on a Friday. I told them yes, it is 95 in Houston with a heat index of 103 and I have a two and three year old. I was told that does not constitute and emergency and would have to wait until mid next week for a contractor to be available. Solution was that I had a neighbor give me the number of her A/C guy and by ten AM Saturday morning a new roof unit was installed at a very fair price (without the assistance of first AM) Third Issue: My two year old Samsung fridge is making very loud wining sounds from the cooling motors as well as the cooling motor for the compressor at the base of the fridge. First AM dispatches a contractor and he verified that all three motors are making noise and need to be replaced. First AM denied the claim stating that they do not cover the fan blades (the contractor did report he motors needed replacing). After a long “discussions” on that issue I was told that First AM did not cover noises and would have to wait for a complete system failure before the claim was addressed. The rep could not wrap her head around the fact that a silent motor that is making a noise is broken. We now are waiting on a Samsung authorized rep to come and fix the fridge.
Bottom line: First AM sells you on how they cover everything including the smoke detectors but their representative must us an extensive playbook to deny claims because that is all they seem to do. In the meantime they collect service and monthly fees for their imaginary home shield coverage. I am still trying to cancel both accounts and this too is proving very difficult…
This is the most worst company I have ever dealt with as far as the customer service goes.
I had been hooked up with them when I bought my house when the seller provided the warranty for one year. I have not used much since the home did not give any problem during my first year.
I continued with First American the second year since I did not get to experience their customer service. I had a plumbing issue later with my shower head leaking. When I called them, the customer service agent mentioned that shower head leaks are not covered. I also had issue with my whirlpool tub and they mentioned a contractor will come to check. The contractor came and he mentioned that he cannot repair it until we remove the outer covering of the tub and leave him with bare pipes to work with which was not possible at that time. He left.
They sent me a bill for service charge of $55. It was bad from their part that without fixing the issue or even working on anything I had to pay the service fee just for the “visit of the technician”. They asked me to read the contract carefully. The service fee is not for fixing the problem, it is due the time “a technician steps at my door”. I disputed the charge, but they sent it to a collection agency. Since I am busy with my work and cannot spend my time fighting with these guys and don’t want to screw up my credit rating, I finally ended up paying the service fee without any service being performed. I immediately canceled my contract with them.
PLEASE PLEASE BE CAREFUL BEFORE SIGNING UP ANY WARRANTY CONTRACT WITH FIRST AMERICAN HOME WARRANTY. THEY CAN CHANGE THE CONTRACT ANY TIME WITHOUT PROPER NOTICE.
Have a plumbing issue. !st Am only uses one Plumbing cotractor (Cal Home Plumbin, Inc) which has a suspended license #861849 as of this posting. Notified !st American, who kept me on hold 30 min and then said that I had to use this company. The tech is not licensed, but works under the license of the company in north Hollywood CA.
Their service rep never called me, I had to call them.
i bought a home in ms in nov.09.we also bought home warranty with roof leak additional.we had a leak and was told the will patch the roof but will not replace nor fix the damage caused by water this is crazy i was told that we would have to fix the damage before they would patch how can you sell something like this and get away with it our oven went out previously to this and we went 3 months and two contractors with 5 visits i have four children how do you do without an oven finally they fixed it but this was at christmas and thanksgiving heck they fixed it after new years three holidays without an oven
Pool motor died. Called them and they claimed contractor would phone on Monday. Heard nothing, and after a few days contractor called back claiming he had been sick.
He came to the house and diagnosed the problem – i.e., observed that motor was dead! Agreed to order the motor and get back to us when it was delivered to him “in a week or two”. Wanted $60 for this “service”.
I called warranty company – supervisor read me legalese to inform me that there is nothing in the contact obliging them to service in any timeframe, and no-one else they could send.
Finally called in our realtor who got the marketing department to call. They agreed to cut a check for what they would have paid him to install a new motor. I went to Pool Warehouse, bought a motor and installed it the same day.
A few months later, the Polaris booster motor failed. They assigned the same contractor. This time he called on Monday. He could not schedule at a mutually convenient time on Tuesday so said he would call back to setup for Wednesday or Thursday. No call, so called the warranty company. On Friday, they claimed that he had been in hospital and that he would call us when he was ready. They could not force him to call us, and have only one other contractor in Houston (a city of 4 million people), who they refused to send out.
So in summary, in a city of 4 million people, First American has a total of 2 people who can repair any pool equipment, and one of these spends 50% of every week off sick!
I would never recommend this company to anybody. Absolute bottom of the barrel. Why is there no option to give them ZERO STARS
Our first home and our first expierence with this company. I don’t have one sigle positive thing to say. Our AC went out Friday. In all of the metro Atlanta area, they have ONE vendor that they use and they don’t work after 5 and don’t work on the weekends. They said the earliest they could get someone out would be Tuesday! Mind you, it is 100 degrees and very humid. Monday they called and said they couldn’t get a technician out til Wed and our time window was 12-6 with a 30 minute call ahead. At6 we had heard from no one. We called and the dispatcher called the tech who then called and said he was 45 minutes out. 30 minutes later called and said he was 10 miles out and heard thunder and couldn’t work in a rain storm…it rained for 10 inutes…so, now it is Thursday – tomorrow will be 7 days since the initial call. We have canceled the claim and will handle ourselves. This waranty is useless.
This company needs to work on their customer service skills. I had this plan when I purchased my home. Paying for this for 3 years. I renewed my contract this year but I told them I wanted the best plan they had even the upgrade for additional cost. Finally needed to use them and they tell me that my a/c wasn’t covered. Mind you this is GA and it is hot. I said you are kidding b/c I got the best plan you offer, so I was told. I told them, how do you sell a warranty that do not cover a/c. They said it is additional and I cannot add b/c over the renewal grace period. I was very upset b/c I just renewed and ask the service rep to give me the top pkg. Was never informed of A/C being additional price. Any one with common since would either ask me do I want A/C coverage or just up-sell me. A/C and Heat are the main purpose for getting a home warranty. The first lady i spoke with was nice but she couldn’t help me. I refused to take no for an answer because I spent too much money on something I can’t use. I ask to speak with supervisor, they were not available. Lady said they will call back. Never heard from them again. I am searching for another warranty w/ A/C and cancelling FA Home Warranty.
Returned from out-of-town to find the A/C had quit working. Immediately contacted First American. Was given the name & number of the contractor to whom the claim was assigned. I called them the next morning to schedule, they couldn’t come out for two more days. Repairman took $60 fee and said he would order the part someone would come out the next day to install it. They called the next day (Saturday)and said the parts house didn’t have it, it would have to be ordered. Monday comes and goes, no contact. Tuesday we contact them, they tell us the part is on National back order. We asked if the part was part of a larger assembly, it was, could they get the larger assembly? Yes, part ordered. Tech comes the next day (Wednesday) & the part is the wrong one. Reordered. Tech comes on Thursday looks at the unit & says this part isn’t going to fix the unit, the whole unit, inside and out will have to be replaced. He said he had to get approval from First American. First American approves the new system. I call First American & ask for the ticket to be moved to another of their contractors due to a total lack of confidence in the ability of this contractor to do the job. Plus their lack of professionalism. First American refused, saying I could cash out or go ahead with this contractor. The contractor said the parts were ordered on Saturday morning, Monday morning they couldn’t get the parts because First American hadn’t provided the PO# for the parts. I had to contact First American, get the PO# & provide to the contractor. So Monday is wasted. After calling 5 times on Tuesday morning, I finally get ahold of the contractor & I’m told we’re on the schedule for today. At 5 o’clock they still haven’t shown up. We are now 14 days into this repair order with no resolution. The owner of the company says he has done “all I can do”.
That is 14 days of no A/C with temps above 95 degrees with more on the way.
I cannot recommend First American under any circumstances. They are unresponsive to concerns and have a stable of incompetant & possibly unlicensed contractors.
First American Home Warranty declines to warrant the services that they provide. After having my range worked on twice by Sears, and paying the service deductible twice, the same part failed for the 3rd time. I was past the 30 days that AHW allows for their warranty, although Sears has a 90 warranty for their work. Sears apparently has a lesser agreement with AHW, I was told I would have to pay the $60 copay again, amounting to $180 total for the same problem. The AHW supervisor was NOT helpful at all and could only parrot the company line of: “sorry, nothing we can do.” Translated: there’s nothing they will do.
After a YEAR of cliams my airconditioner still is not working. You can’t get the correct person on the phone, they will disconnect you (I’m sure of now because of how often it happens). They are way to expensive…..on and on the list could go. I work in customer service and I have never been so digusted with a company as this one. If you have ever listened to a review(s), LISTEN to these. This company needs to be shut down. I know I’m starting by getting my money back….
Air Conditioning unit went out yesterday-our city is currently under a heat advisory. 91 degrees in my home. I called Home Warranty because since April 2010, our AC unit has been service on and the problem still occurs. When the repairman came out in May, the problem should have been fixed in April instead we were charged 60.00 along with 390.00.To date we are still having problems with our unit. Each time our AC is service it’s always 60.00. It’s a rip off. When speaking with the service dept.I was told to call the repairman back and if I had problems to call them back and they would connect me with resolution dept. which they could assist on finding someone to come out.Well when i call back after speaking with the repair business that supposly have been servicing our unit for the 3rd time. FAHW told me my call was not an emergency and it was nothing they could do.They were rule and very heartless. It’s been that way from day one with these people. I have not had good experience with these people. Even if they would have said though your case maybe an emergency however we cannot not provide assistant today because of high volume etc…… it was stated “your case is not an emergency”.. Try sleeping in 93 degree heat and tell me if it’s an emergency or not with a family and a pet.Even if there is nothing that can be done it’s always a better way to talk to people I don’t care how far away you are. It’s bad enough you get ratty service the most you can do to make up for it is to talk to people like you care…..I’m done with First Am. and wish I would have read the reviews before renewing from a previous home buyer who added a yr contract with First Am. when we brought our home.
day 12 in houston its 95 with 85%hemid after 8 calls 5 supervisors and a contractor that does not call back and can not speak clear english still have no working ac.never again
It has now been 3 weeks with no air conditioning and temperatures have ranged 75-85 degrees in my house.
After numerous attempts (at least 15 via phone, fax and email) to contact First American and the contractor they chose (Heating & Cooling Services), both have not gotten my service done or returned my phone calls.
First American refused to switch contractors and has not been able to get a hold of the contractor they selected.
They also refuse to compensate any financial responsibility but offered a cash out option ($300+) that was 4 times smaller than the estimates I received from other contractors ($1100 – $1200).
Service, Value, Integrity – These are the words you hear while you are on hold with First American. Obviously, they do not believe in these.
let me begin by saying i live in mississippi. it is june. temperatures are soaring in the 90s. heat index is above 100. humidity is unbearable.
i placed a claim with first american on may 22 regarding my ac unit continuously running (i had previously placed a claim in april with ac problems).
a repairman FINALLY came to my house on june 4.
i’m on day 19 since placing claim in may–i still have no air. my children and i cannot live in my home because of the extreme temperatures. first american said, “THIS WAS NOT AN EMERGENCY!!” please read beginning paragraph again.
first american will not place my children and i in a hotel until the problem is resolved, so i am having to move place to place….
19 days…no air. legal action will ensue.
We will not use this company again; if your heat goes out in the dead of winter or your air conditioning goes out in the summer, it takes at least a week to get anyone to your house. Customer service representatives are inconsistent, rude, hateful and uncaring. Supervisors never call back. USE ANYONE BUT THIS COMPANY
Very poor choice for contractors. Gives false promises with service and finally inform you that they have to cancel the appoitment and you have to live with it. No understanding THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN A DAY OFF, STAYED HOME WAITING FROM 8AM-3PM WHEN YOUR APPOINTMENT WAS 8-11AM, and hearing at 3pm that no service will be provided when you were promised another teck to be sent is not acceptable. Zero understanding to customer satisfaction. Very poor rating not just poor. will not recommend this company and will not renew the contract with them again.
This is the worst warranty service I have ever purchased. The response time is slow, the open appointments for repair are 3 or more days out. We had an ac outage and they couldn’t help for 3 days during an extreme heat index. This is ridiculous and they think they are doing me a favor! I will not renew with this company and I will tell as many people as possible about the service so they don’t waste money and time as I have. Seems like the sales rep can’t be bothered returning any calls not that she has successfully sold a bum product!
